It’s great to our Mysore classes so busy – I’ve been teaching traditional Ashtanga Yoga in modern day Dublin  for over a decade and I’m more passionate than ever about incorporating this authentic practice into our everyday lives!

There is a lot of conflicting advice out there about how one should practice Ashtanga Yoga.  A lot of this hyperbole creates an unnecessarily strict and dogmatic approach which takes one further away from developing a sustainable long term practice.

Ideally, the best time to practice Ashtanga in its ancient and traditional style is just before dawn, six days a week. This is an easy option when one is in Mysore, India with no other responsibilities for the rest of the day but it’s not a realistic option for most people due to the many demands of modern, Western life, be it due to conflicting work schedules, parenting, and/or other factors. And so I feel it is hugely important to note that your practice does not have to be ‘all or nothing’. Personally, I choose to practice six days a week, however that does not mean that you have to be on your mat six days a week. It is an unrealistic option for most people and that’s OK! I always recommend that you try to come to practice at least two to three times per week, so that you can best reap the rewards of this ancient and beautiful practice. I urge you ignore the ‘all or nothing’ approach and remember that some Ashtanga is better than no Ashtanga!

Applications are now open on our next Immersion Course commencing in January 2020. This comprehensive course is designed to help yoga students deepen their personal practice and for those already teaching to get a deeper foundation and refine their skills through understanding the Ashtanga practice from the inside out. Ashtanga Yoga Ireland by Gillian Mooney - 1M ago

It’s great to see our newly extended Mysore Programme in full swing – I’m delighted that you’re all enjoying our new space and availing of the additional evening classes!

We also have an amazing group of 20 practitioners on our current Immersion Course. We’ve been reviewing the programme to date and decided to add an extra five weekend dates. This is based on their positive feedback and desire to cover more extensive content and practice. The subject of Ashtanga yoga is incredibly vast and worthy of a lifetime of study. Hence, our next Immersion Course will be a one year course starting in January 2020 and will run over ten weekends. This comprehensive course is designed for practitioners and teachers that want to deepen their own personal practice and understanding of Ashtanga Yoga (it is not a teacher training course.) It is aimed at preparing you to go beyond the asanas and to make Ashtanga yoga an integral part of your life journey.

The course modules will include classic yogic breathing techniques, guided led primary and mysore style classes, the traditional method of Sanskrit Vinyasa counting and safe hands-on adjustments of the key postures from the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga. The modules will also include classical Yoga Philosophy and fundamental applied Anatomy and Physiology. You can find full details and the application process via Immersion Course Page.

I’ll also be teaching an Introductory Mysore Workshop on Saturday, May 4th and a Led Primary Series Workshop on Saturday, May 18th (see below.) There are two last spaces available on the Summer Retreat in Italy – don’t delay as it will fill up quickly!

There will be no Mysore class next Monday, April 22nd due to the Bank Holiday – otherwise the Mysore classes are running as usual every evening.

Wishing you a wonderful Easter!

Gillian

Ashtanga Yoga Ireland by Gillian Mooney - 1M ago

Our new evening Mysore Programme starts today! Our new venue is an intimate space called ‘Kamra’ (meaning sacred room in Hindi) located above Dublin’s coolest Indian restaurant, Kerala Kitchen. It’s a truly authentic setting for Ashtanga yoga, originating from the source in Mysore, southern India.

The new programme will offer Mysore Style classes every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5.30pm-8pm. I’ll also be teaching an Introductory Workshops for anyone that would like to join the Mysore Style classes or to refresh the basic fundamentals next Saturday, April 6th from 10.30am-1pm (see ashtangayogaireland.ie/yoga-workshops/

The address is 5 Baggot Street Upper, Dublin 4 and there is plenty of on street parking and bicycle parking racks nearby. Click here for directions:  Google Maps.

As most of you are discovering, Ashtanga yoga is an incredibly powerful tool – the physical and mental benefits of developing a strong and flexible body and reducing stress and anxiety levels are profound. However, the invisible part of this practice is how it trains us to develop deeper insights into our emotional world and our sense of self.  I’ve been teaching this ancient practice in modern day Dublin for the past 14 years and my passion for sharing authentic teachings continues to deepen each year.

Consistency is the key to developing a deep practice so try to come to class as often as you can…

Looking forward to seeing you at the new venue!

I’ve been exploring the possibilities to extend our evening Mysore programme for a long time as it has been challenging due to the rental crisis in the city centre. However, I’m delighted to announce that we will be extending our evening Mysore programme shortly. Consistency is the key to the Ashtanga yoga practice, hence the additional evenings will provide a much stronger offering for you all. I’ll be in contact with all the details very soon!

There are 3 last spaces available on the Led Primary Series Workshop next Saturday, March 9th (from 10.30am-1pm.) I highly recommend that all Mysore practitioners come along as it’s very beneficial for you to learn the traditional vinyasa count. You can find more details below…

I’m delighted to be back teaching after an inspiring week of practice with Certified teacher, Hamish Hendry in Astanga Yoga London. It’s an integral part of my duty as a teacher to continuously focus on my own practice and studies in order to teach as authentically as possible. I’ve been studying this incredible science of yoga for many years and I’m still continuously amazed by how it can transform our lives!

The Ashtanga yoga practice based on breath aligned with movement  is a powerful tool to connect within ourselves. Developing a regular practice gives us the ability to replenish ourselves not only on a physical and mental level, but more importantly on a spiritual level. Cleansing our nervous system is probably the most powerful gift we can give ourselves in this lifetime. Ashtanga trains us to deeply cleanse our sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system through the practice of asanas complimented with breath work. We are tuning and toning the nervous system in a particular way that opens us into a higher way of integration to remove obstacles that are covering our essential nature of awareness. This deep work thus leads us to the true vision of yoga as explained by Patanjali’s yoga sutra 1.2  ‘Yogas Chitta Vritti Nirodha’ – ‘stilling the mind.’

I’m feeling fully re-charged after a week of intense practice and excited to share more of these teachings with you all!

I’m also available for Corporate yoga classes if any of you would like to bring the myriad benefits of yoga to your colleagues please click https://ashtangayogaireland.ie/corporate-yoga-classes/ and we can explore the possibilities to make this happen.

There’s lots more details below about the next Immersion Course from June to October, Italy Summer Retreat and the next Workshop on Saturday, March 9th.

Ashtanga Yoga Ireland by Gillian Mooney - 4M ago

January is here and it seems that everyone is busily making new year resolutions. To me, resolution making seems like another ‘should’ in a life full of shoulds – a demand for more effort in a world already requiring so much fortitude. Personally, I prefer to take the edge off resolution making, beginning the new year with a little more ease. I always feel so grateful to have this transformative practice in my life. Ashtanga yoga does not promise us a life without hardship or pain but it does give us a tool to keep the mind and body steady throughout life’s ups and downs. I urge you all to fulfill your good intentions by simply nurturing your practice for the year ahead.

If you fancy an escape after the chaos of the past few weeks, our retreat this weekend is the perfect opportunity for you! The weekend will consist of morning Mysore style classes, guided hill walks and amazing vegetarian food in the beautiful Wicklow hills. There are two last spaces available so let me know if you fancy treating yourself…

The Tuesday and Thursday evening Mysore style classes will restart from tomorrow, January 8th onwards. As always, new students are most welcome. I recommend that you contact me beforehand to arrange a suitable start time to get you started on your Ashtanga journey.

There’s lots more details on the Retreat this weekend, the upcoming Key Principles of Back Bending Workshop and the next Immersion Course dates from June to October 2019 below..

Looking forward to sharing lots more Ashtanga yoga with you all in the year ahead!
