Today’s podcast is solely based on human experience that I and others I’ve taught have been a part of. A no holds barred understanding of why anxiety turns into depression, and how to climb out of this state as quickly as possible. You’re certainly not alone if you’re on this journey right now. The light at the end of the tunnel is staring at you right in the face, and it’s time you stared back.

You deserve a life free from worry and victimhood

Deep down within every sufferer of emotional distress though, is a secondary gain. Something that the anxiety disorders provide a person. This is a big reason why the cycle continues, there’s an attachment to thinking, feeling, speaking, and being this way. It becomes habit, it gets adopted by others in your family, and many times the pain of freedom outweighs the pain of distress. It’s backwards I know, but this understanding is key to you healing anxiety.

Anxiety fills a void, and provides a sense of identity. When anxiety gets replaced with depression the void needs re-filling

These disorders are a result of what’s going on unconsciously. Because this is the case we need to understand the communication process and the right mindset towards shifting things at a deeper level. I’m excited to present this episode to you, because I know where you are in your life right now. I’ve been in that mind and body, it’s not who you truly are, but in time this journey will only strengthen your gratitude for your life.

“Unconsciously there’s a formula for health anxiety that we apply daily, which gives us our consistent results.”

Shocking, I know. Many health anxiety sufferers believe that what takes place on the outside affects how we feel on the inside. The truth is that the formula you run each day (consciously and unconsciously) creates the associations between what’s safe and what’s a danger, which then turns into an emotion. This emotion has been misinterpreted one too many times, and it’s heightened your sensitivity to your bodily symptoms of anxiety.

Health anxiety is no accident, you’ve gotten really good at running specific patterns each day that makes you feel this way

Many times when we think about the word ‘formula,’ we think of positive things. In this case however the formula for health anxiety is a set of patterns and habits that I’ll bring to your awareness today. Once this information gets to you I believe you’ll start seeing yourself less as a victim, and more empowered. Empowered because you’ll feel a sense of power coming back to you.

Health anxiety can make you feel powerless, but it’s just a feeling

As we all know by now a feeling is just a feeling, and a thought is just a thought. Think of it as an option, one option out of many for that particular situation. We have the power within us to bypass the initial fearful emotional response and move to a more neutral interpretation of our bodily symptoms of anxiety. “Sometimes you just have to step back and take another look at your life.”

As I was taking a calming walk on the streets of Bali today I began looking at this journey I’m on from a whole other perspective. Over the years I’ve shared my best work around healing anxiety which includes the mindsets, the skills, the epiphanies, and I truly believe that I’ve done and am doing good work for the sake of every anxiety warrior out there. I celebrate with others when they’re sharing their progress with me, and intuitively guide the ones struggling as best I can.

A life’s mission that is incredibly exciting to get up for each and everyday!

But I began pondering a bigger question, how did this all come about? Was it sheer luck? Was it hard work? Was it some kind of infinite intelligence that I once prayed to that fulfilled my wishes? To this day it’s hard for me to pinpoint the answer because it’s truly un-answerable. I can have an opinion as to how I’ve gained the knowledge while simultaneously creating a tribe of anxiety sufferers ready to heal (on YouTube, Podcasts, and Facebook), but how much of that opinion is true?

Since our opinions are dictated by our emotional states in that moment, our values, beliefs, past decisions, memories etc I don’t think it’s possible to know how I actually tapped into my true purpose for this lifetime

What this has taught me is that we don’t need all the answers. Heck, we don’t need the majority of them! I used to look at myself as an idiot if I couldn’t find a solution to someones challenge or my own questions, until I didn’t. I started labeling myself as human, rather than pathetic, and that completely changed the path my life was on. The important answers we seek don’t necessarily show up when our minds are analytical and full, they show up when we least expect them to show up.

If you think all this Anxiety Guy content is due to my studying the arts of CBT, NLP, Hypnosis, Energy Psychology or other methods, you’re wrong

It’s kind of like planting a seed and having the faith that it will grow into something. My walk today taught me to be even more imperfect, more childish, and more unique, a true anxiety warrior. I felt more permission to flow with life ups and downs rather than fight for what my ego felt I should fight for. Now that’s a fight that will NEVER end, I don’t care how good you feel about yourself temporarily.

I realized that I’m not happy all the time, and that’s ok, because that’s real. It’s a part of a system within me that I have plenty of control over, but sometimes not so much. I realized that sometimes I get sad, and that’s ok, why else would god install this emotion within us? It must serve a purpose just like all our other emotions, and we must feel them all in order to grow and evolve, right?

Every anxiety warrior out there should hold up a white flag and surrender to themselves

Surrender to the thing you’re trying to alter and change at a frantic pace, with little luck. Bruce Lee said it beautifully when he said ‘have the courage to be disliked’ which is another sign of surrendering to the external, what freedom that level of life is, wow! The only limits we have are the ones we place on ourselves, and maybe you carry these beliefs within you now, such as:

  • ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.’
  • ‘Life is short.’
  • ‘Healing doesn’t show up over night!’

First of all you CAN teach an old ‘dog’ new tricks, life isn’t short if you live it the right way, and healing CAN show up over night but you’re not even giving yourself a chance because you’ve been saying this to yourself for years now. Open your mind up to something new about yourself and the world, you won’t regret it but you will face resistance I can assure you that, and that’s ok. Where do you go from here?

You take a step back, that’s for one. And you can begin by ridiculing those ridiculous beliefs you hold about yourself and why the world is so scary. Deep within you there’s a voice longing to be heard. A voice that wants to experience life in the present, rather than looking to a future goal before it can be happy again. We’re always waiting to live, waiting for the raise, the vacation, the person, the blah blah blah, and when it comes it lasts a few minutes before we find ourselves wanting again.

What misery, what guilt, what inner pain!

Stop wanting, start experiencing. Experience the fulness of your 5 senses now, I mean when was the last time you asked yourself ‘what’s fun about this?’ I’m sure it’s been a while because you’ve been too consumed with the question of ‘what’s the potential disaster because of this?’ I’ve been there, I developed anxiety on auto-pilot, and I know what it’s like to create emotional distress without any effort. Realize that the opposite can also be true. Inner peace can replace anxiety once and for all, and the anxiety warrior doesn’t have to come out in spurts, but can last a life time. That’s what my walk taught me today.

“If we never recognize our anxiety causing addictions, we’ll never feel better long term.”

When many of us think about the term ‘addictions’ we think of behavioural patterns that we consciously can recognize. But what about the ones we unconsciously make into habit? The anxiety causing addictions that I’ll talk about in todays episode of the anxiety guy podcast will open your eyes to the very components that are adding to your emotional distress.

4 out of 5 of these anxiety causing addictions were regular habits in my own life!

They messed with the filters in my brain that kept me perceiving myself in a limiting manner, and perceiving the world in a dangerous one. These brain filters are everything, because the brain will certainly distort, generalize, and delete information to keep you in line with what’s become habit. Habit is how the brain knows what direction to go next, remember that.

Can anxiety causing addictions be altered?

You already know the answer to this I’m sure, yes. And there is plenty of proof that supports the idea that the brain is very much plastic, and can alter its associations. In order for this podcast to be valuable to you though, you must approach it with an open mind, and end the denial that has put you in this place. Next to denial is justification as to why we do what we do, and many times we become so good at convincing ourselves as to why it’s a good idea to maintain these anxiety causing addictions, even if inner peace is right around the corner.

“To end my health anxiety, I needed to do things differently than the other health anxiety sufferers.”

Are you ready for the big reveal? I get lots of questions on my personal progress to end my health anxiety, and that’s where todays podcast episode is going. To be honest, I’m not sure how shocked you’ll really be. There isn’t any real CRAZY secrets to my healing journey past health anxiety, so don’t be too disappointed when you hear something you may already know (but aren’t doing anything about).

These 5 steps will however get you to start questioning the catastrophic ideas you give way too much respect to

You know those ideas that keep your health anxiety alive very well. Such as:

  • Do I have a physical illness and is my life slowly fading?
  • If I stop worrying will I acquire a physical illness?
  • What is this new pain in my pinky? Could it be… Pinky cancer?

And so on…

Isn’t it incredible how imaginative and creative health anxiety sufferers are? I mean, we can literally take an idea and create a monster out of it, without any real experiences that support the idea! It really is a skill, not many people can be as imaginative in this way I can tell you that. But our goal together is to turn that unconscious imagination that fuels further ‘negative’ emotions, into conscious imagination which leads to positive emotions instead.

“Guilt is poison to our minds, emotions, and physical bodies. Which is why it’s time to replace these 4 words that are adding to your stress and anxiety levels now!”

Your past isn’t a life sentence, it’s a learning opportunity. If you don’t see it that way you may very well be living your present life still stuck over events in your past. Eye opening, I know. Life can become so hectic and overwhelming that we never stop to consider the ideas in our heads that have turned into patterns. And those patterns could very well be what is adding to your stress and anxiety levels daily.

Good health is your birthright warrior!

Some don’t see it that way though. Some don’t believe they deserve good health until they actually do something to deserve it, or permission is given by others. This can again be connected to the 4 words in today’s anxiety guy podcast episode that may be adding to your stress and anxiety levels. Once we can recognize that we are the co-creators with source energy (here’s a video where I go deeper into my connection to god) of our lives, we put power back into our hands.

Without this outlook, you’ll succumb to the agendas of other people for your life

You are literally powerless at this point. Until you clean up your past you can’t have a bright future and a pleasant present. It’s a convincing game with the head boss, the subconscious mind, and it is possible to convince this mind and body of different perspectives. Anxiety doesn’t have to be managed or coped with forever. If we can get to the root cause of our suffering we can begin healing our anxiety. I will emphasize though that emotion in the form of total and utter dissatisfaction is a key part to summoning the courage to change.

“Progress Over Health Anxiety Can Certainly Be Achieved By Starting And Ending The Day With The Right Focus Of Attention.”

Isn’t it interesting that how we start our day dictates how much progress over health anxiety we make? A symptom of anxiety may show up, but it’s not the symptom that caused the snowball we call health anxiety, it’s the mental, emotional, and behavioral response to the symptom. That’s why I want to make sure that the right questions run through your mind in the morning and at the end of the day.

You’re always just one MASSIVE epiphany away from ending health anxiety

Yes you heard me right. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve suffered or how severe your health anxiety has been. One deep and emotional realization that helps you to question your patterns that cause health anxiety could be enough to change your emotional path in life. It certainly showed up for me one afternoon as I was driving to work, and that started the snowball effect that contributed to my huge progress over health anxiety.

I realized that a thought is just a thought, an emotion was just an emotion, and I had more options as to how I responded to my symptoms of health anxiety

That sounds like 3 epiphanies I know, as they all came rushing towards me and slapped me in the face. I started questioning the ideas in my head that kept me from progress over health anxiety. I started viewing my symptoms of anxiety from the perspective of my subconscious mind which held my past emotional traumas. Everything will be better warrior I promise, but first let’s make sure we get these questions in.

“Reasons For Anxiety Always Comes Before Results.”

We live in a world of being caught up. So caught up in our daily to-do’s and pleasing others in fact that we rarely take the time to think that our emotional states could in fact be wrong! Meaning, you actually don’t have to feel the way you do right now each and everyday in your present life.

The physical symptoms a person experiences such as depersonalization, dizziness, heart palpitations, a lump in the throat sensation and more, all have a reason and cause to them, and here they are:

1 – You’re Watching Too Much News

I’m known for being a straight shooter and telling it like it is with tremendous empathy backing up my words. So here it is, you don’t have to know every little detail over what’s going on in the world! There are many people today suffering from anxiety that feel like worry is a daily need. The more they worry the more productive they feel they are, the safer they feel, and the more connected they feel to themselves.

THESE ARE ALL ILLUSIONS!

You’re living in a delusional world if you believe that worry is preventing you from harm and is a necessary trait for your identity. Watching the news is one of those ways a person fulfills these ideas that float around in their head each day.

But here’s the truth, you don’t have to know it all. Heck, I’m perfectly fine with not knowing what the details are of the latest artificial intelligence robot, how world war 3 is progressing, and what Donald Trumps latest fiasco is politically. Turn the TV off already, you’ll live, and you’ll live better.

2 – No Direction Or Purpose In Life

Such a cliche I know but I had to remind you, because I care. If you don’t have a large enough reason that flings you out of bed each day, you’ll always be searching for temporary pleasures, and give into temptation. Your purpose must help to serve others and the world, and your life must have meaning. Without this deep meaning your life metaphor will always be something like…

“Life Is Like A Never-Ending Dark Tunnel Of Blah.”

You don’t want your life to be blah, do you? So stop waiting for the right feeling to show up, or the right time, and take a step in the right direction. Analyze what you’ve put on the shelf because of your anxiety and begin taking steps to get back into those passions. You may find that this kind of digging and acting on your hunches takes you right out of your anxiety, who would have known!?

3 – No Skills Related To Doing The Inner Work

‘Winging it’ was such a cool way to do things back in high school. To not give too much attention to anything, to study less, and to be the rebel of your class. The only problem with this is that you’ll fall into quick sand fast, and feel like you’re constantly trying to dig yourself out. The lesson is to stop doing everything at random and start organizing your skill sets for the day ahead. These skill sets can be related to these areas:

  • Mental – Learning how to counter one way of seeing a situation with another
  • Emotional – Learning how to allow yourself to feel differently about situations that cause you anxiousness
  • Verbal – To speak to others in an opposing more empowering way than you have been
  • Behavioural – Doing things that force you to level up in life, and step out of your comfort zone
  • Imaginative – Imagining the best case scenario rather than the worst

Without a few powerful skill sets to apply during moments of sensitivity, your anxiety will sky rocket. You’ll find yourself at the mercy of your thoughts, feelings, and past memories. Looking at potential reasons for anxiety, I’d say take this one very seriously.

4 – Obsessive Thoughts (The Spider Web Effect)

The spider web effect is a habit where once a negative idea shows up in a persons conscious mind, they connect that limiting idea to another one, and another one, and so forth. This leads to a feeling that isn’t appreciated, and actions that keep us from experiencing the day the way we’d like to. People give their thoughts way too much respect in this day and age, and there lies our biggest problem that leads to so much anxiety in todays world.

A thought is just A thought, an emotion is just an emotion

Did you know that you consciously and unconsciously go through around 70,000 thoughts per day? That’s a ton of thoughts, but the important question is why do you give more attention to some thoughts over others? The answer is due to habit, a system within you that only cares about your survival, and your upbringing.

Either way, we have no time for victimhood, so start recognizing the unlimited ways you have to question and respond to a thought, and start defying your fear and anxiety starting today.

5 – Uncertainty About The Future

There aren’t a whole lot of people that enjoy uncertainty, but this holds the key to your freedom. If you lose your job what’s the worst that can happen really? You move back in with your parents let’s say, and is that what you’re so scared of?

If your dog dies (harsh example, I know) what’s the worst that can happen? You’re saddened by the event for a few weeks before recognizing all the things you now get to do that you couldn’t do when you had a dog? Controlling every aspect of life is one of the biggest reasons for anxiety, as yourself if you’re on this boat now.

The Important Thing To Understand Here Is That Uncertainty Can Be Your Friend, And Certainty Doesn’t Have To Be Fought For Day In And Day Out

When you were a kid I bet you LOVED uncertainty. The playground, the new kid in school, the field trips and much much more. You didn’t know the outcome of those events, and yet you were in a pleasurable emotional state. That fun, adventurous, and care-free kid still lives within you, you just have to start listening to that voice.

6 – Environmental Factors

Your work place, your friends, the clutter in your house. Let’s take the example of a cluttered house and how it creates a cluttered mind. You notice how different you feel once you’ve cleaned your house? It’s like a new you shows up! Empowered, clear, limitless. Imagine cleaning up the other environmental factors that could be the reasons for your anxiety, the same way you clean your house.

Yes, you will feel relieved, right after you feel the wrath of uncertainty (and that’s ok)

The lesson here is to take a deeper look into the environmental factors that are contributing to your anxiety. Do you want to stay friends with those energy vampires simply because it’s been such a familiar part of your life? Or do you want to tell the world about how you overcame an anxiety disorder? Start digging.

7 – Too Much Time Alone

The media has gained control over our brains, and alone time usually means social media time (or some other time wasting routine). If you’re currently spending a large portion of your time alone with yourself, you’ll unconsciously find ways to sabotage your life, I promise. Simply because we’re looking for the next thing that will turn our inner pain into pleasure as quick as possible.

For Most People It’s A lot Easier To Grab A Bag Of Cheetos And A Beer, Than To Grab A Pen And Paper And Analyze Why Their Anxiety Is Rising Daily

The key here is balance. You’ve got to start creating awareness as to how you can start becoming pat of the world again. Whether that be with like minded goal seeking individuals, or re-uniting with your old relationships, or joining a gym. The goal is to get started. Oh, and if your brain comes up with a hundred reasons for why you shouldn’t or can’t, that’s normal (this video will tell you why).

8 – Obsessing Over Bodily Symptoms Of Anxiety

One of the biggest reasons for anxiety is overly focusing on the potential ‘bad’ ending related to a bodily symptom of anxiety. A debilitating cycle that I talk about weekly on the Health Anxiety Podcast Show that traumatizes many people, sometimes on a daily basis.

There are many reasons for this type of obsessing habit, so a deeper look into each persons story is crucial

Some may be feeling the affects of past emotional trauma (which I believe is the biggest reason), some may be fighting toxicity in the body, some may have too much free time and filling it with other perceived ways of strengthening their chances of survival by worrying more (this was me). All I know is that no matter what your health anxiety story is, the understanding, the skill sets, and the faith in the process will get you to freedom.

9 – Past Trauma

My favourite and most commonly visited topic with my personal clients towards the reasons for anxiety. As you’ve heard me talk about in this YouTube video on questions to find out whether trauma is the culprit, these reasons can’t be overlooked. We don’t move through our days consciously, we move through our days unconsciously. Habit forms the life we live and habit becomes the effect of the cause which in this case means memories that haven’t been dealt with.

For every 10 people that go through my programs and my sessions, 9 of them are speaking with me due to past memory, and feel relief from their anxiety once their past traumas are re-negotiated

Bold, I know, and true! To re-negotiate your traumas means to let go. To see it as it is, not worse than it is, and to say your piece to the people in your past you need to. By emphasizing work around the imagination we can go back in time (work with a practitioner on this please) and see, hear, feel, taste, smell the experience differently. Neuro Linguistic Programming and Hypnosis are also sensational ways of doing this kind of inner work, if this is a part of the reasons for anxiety for you.

10 – Toxicity In Foods

Rarely discussed as one of the reasons for anxiety, and it’s not fair. Toxicity in foods must get more attention and further consciousness and awareness must overlap unconscious behaviours. Nutrition can be medicine or poison for the body, so don’t just go by what tastes good to you. Your taste buds have been bossed around for so many years that they literally don’t work the same way they once did.

Every bite of food is either healing your mental health or sabotaging it

I do feel however that the world is waking up and beginning to realize that their nutrition choices are not only affecting their longevity and disease, but also the quality of their present lives. Small actions towards conscious eating at any time in your life can have remarkable effects on on your overall well-being. So take this potential reason for your anxiety very seriously.

“As A Child There Really Wasn’t Much You Could Do About Much, Anxiety Was Inevitable.”

The anxious programming starts young and develops into the 9-5 work life. There really is no such thing as work/life balance in my eyes simply because we’re all so hyper aroused all the time. We unconsciously reject balance and we search for the next thing to worry about or do, because it’s a program, a condition.

We fall into the system of stress and anxiety, losing our creativity and positive imagination in the process.

It’s always been about who we need to please, what dream we need to chase, and who we must compete with next. This cycle of constant fight or flight slowly wears down our emotional states, leading to our depleted physical state. Life isn’t much more than getting a job, raising a family, saving for retirement, and dying. The only problem is no one explained to you that you have more options.

Most anxiety is a result of stored energy that can’t find an outlet, and traumatic memories that led to freezing or helplessness in the moment.

Think about it, stored energy, rage, blame, guilt, un-forgiveness, sound familiar? Traumatic memories during childhood that created a state of helplessness, the inability to do something or speak up. Welcome to the anxiety system that most of us get caught up in.

Life can be lived in a state of inner and outer harmony, or a state of chaos. As much as it may not seem to be the case at the moment for you, this option is always available. But it’s going to take a recognition over the anxiety system we live in, and to begin questioning your limited beliefs over your potential.

Many times we become so caught up in trying to get rid of a bodily symptom of anxiety that we never get to the root cause of the feeling itself. A reactive life is an unconscious life, you’re literally at the mercy of your feelings and the outside world. But you deserve better.

Your body isn’t trying to harm you, hurt you, it’s trying to tell you something!

What a change in perspective. A shift from unconsciousness to awareness, and this is where healing health anxiety resides. I remember being in your anxious shoes in the past. I remember hating myself and all that came with me. I remember blaming my past and the world, and I remember having my health anxiety be a party of who I thought I was. But, I broke free of this cycle because I was given more options on what to believe, and how to see my inner challenges.

Today I provide you with a clearer understanding of what your body is telling you through health anxiety!

Because life isn’t meant to be lived in struggle, and within a comfort zone. Two places that a health anxiety sufferer mentally and emotionally lives in each day. I’m not telling you that this change in perspective over what your body is telling you will show up in a day, I mean it might, but the goal is steadily approaching your health anxiety recovery for the long term. To get to such a place of conscious awareness that anytime the old patterns want to creep in, you’re there to comfort it and guide it towards freedom.
