Ever wondered why your barber works the way they do? Many men are familiar with the barbering experience from the perspective of a client, but what’s it like as the person behind the chair? Barbering is a practice that stretches back thousands of years. And while techniques have changed, having questions about hair management has not. Here are some common questions about barbering. Here are some common questions that people have about barbers and barbering:

Questions What’s the story with the barber pole?

Thousands of years ago, barbers didn’t simply shave and cut hair, they were also general physicians for people who couldn’t afford doctors. They would perform simple procedures such as tooth extractions or blood letting. Think Sweeney Todd. Ok, don’t! While many of the health practices of yore have been debunked by modern medicine, the barber pole has remained as a symbol for the trade. Some say that the red and white stripes represent the bandages used during bloodletting, though a barber today wouldn’t dare to use that procedure on one of their clients!

What do barbers use to cut hair?

The obvious answer to this question would scissors, but barbers use much more than simply scissors to provide modern hairstyles and shaves. Barbers use brushes, towels, and a straight razor to shave their clients. For cutting hair, barbers often use electric trimmers to shave hair close to the skin, accompanied with scissors and a comb to provide the desired look. Barbers have many other accessories as part of their arsenal, including disinfecting solution for tools, hair coloring supplies, and much more!

Why do barbers wear gloves?

Gloves are an important safety measure to protect the client and the barber. They protect both people from skin conditions that can be transmitted through contact, protect the barber from staining their skin when coloring hair, and can protect the barber from contact with blood in the rare instance of a nick when shaving. Safety is most important for everyone involved!

Do barbers learn the same things as cosmetologists?

The curriculum for barbers and cosmetologists can overlap quite a bit. For example, both professionals need to know similar health and safety practices, tool use and maintenance, as well as the basics for men’s hair cutting and styling. Barber programs typically cover straight razor shaves as well, while not all cosmetology programs provide this option. Barbering programs tend to exclude education about manicures, pedicures, and esthetics that are included in cosmetology education as well.

Do barbers have to be licensed to shave or cut hair?

Laws regarding barbering vary state by state, so it’s important to find out more information about licensing for where you live. In some states, it’s completely illegal to cut hair without a license, while some states are a little more lenient. In California, where American Beauty College is located, you cannot provide barbering services for a fee without a license. Either way, it’s highly advisable for people to earn their barbering license if they want to shave and cut hair. Becoming a licensed barber can give you the expertise you need to grow your own business and avoid making mistakes that could cost you in the long run.

How do barbers choose which barbering school to attend?

People who are interested in barbering can choose any school they want to work for their accreditation, but not all schools are created equally. Ideal schools will be accredited by the state and offer federal financial aid options and scholarship resources. The program should be up to date with modern barbering information, and the school should be proactively involved in helping their students to succeed. These are just a few things to keep an eye out for when trying to find the right school for you!

American Beauty College (ABC) is truly so lucky to have such incredible students. They each work very hard to learn and grow their skills, they provide excellent customer service, and are overall excellent students! This month we are featuring David Acosta, Andrea Loria, and Mayra Zuniga. Check them out and make sure you come visit them in the student salon*!

November 2018’s Student Highlights David Acosta, Barbering Student

David has been such a pleasure to have in class since the day he started with us at American Beauty College, West Covina. He is very self-motivated and on top of each assignment, and he definitely surpasses the learning curve of a freshman student. One thing that really stands out about David is that he is a very humble and well-rounded student. He asks many questions throughout each lesson to make sure he can excel in that service. Additionally, he is very quiet and focused but that is a great asset to obtain in this industry because it instills confidence in his customers. We definitely are lucky to have David and cannot wait to see him grow into a great barber!

Andrea Loria, Cosmetology Student

Andrea is a one of our cosmetology students at our West Covina campus and she is a great asset to the industry even though she is just a beginner. Andrea is always the first to jump at the sight of a client coming on the salon floor. Her professionalism and effectiveness during the service makes her stand out to clients as she continues to be requested by many clients each day. She is very self motivated and determined. Our favorite thing about Andrea is that when you give her a task she will work on the procedure over and over again until it is almost perfect. As Andrea continues to grow she is only going to advance more and more as her knowledge expands.

Mayra Zuniga, Barbering Student

Mayra is one of our barbering students. She has just begun her barber floor journey and we have received nothing but great reviews from each client she has worked with. In most cases her clients have praised her and said that she has exceeded their expectations. On the days that Mayra does not take clients she does not just sit down and wait to be told what to do; she is very self-motivated and works hard to complete all her classwork and operations in a proficient manner. We cannot wait to see what a great barber she becomes in her days to follow here at ABC.

Become a Future Beauty Student!

It’s no surprise that so many of ABC’s students are getting recognized like this. At American Beauty College, we strive to provide an education that encourages personal growth and success. Cosmetology, manicuring, and barbering students can experience a variety of opportunities within the beauty industry, and feel prepared to sit for the state exam. If you wonder if you’d be a perfect fit at our school please don’t hesitate to call us at (626) 472-7402. We can’t wait to see your name on our Student Highlights blog one day!

Here at American Beauty College, we want to celebrate each student’s success. To help our students step into the spotlight, we highlight two stand-out future professionals on our blog each month. This month we wanted to feature three West Covina campus students: Rose Garay, Emanuel Barraza, and Ricardo Garcia!

Rose Garay

Rose is a student in our cosmetology program, and ever since her first day she’s been making waves in our classroom. Her educator recalls,

“I can still remember Rose on her first day of class. She was so happy and excited to be starting here at American Beauty College.”

Since day one Rose has made big impacts on others, including both students and staff. From being a support system to helping others out when they are in need, we all appreciate the energy Rose brings to our school. As a cosmetologist, being clean and organized is one very big factor that plays an important role in our industry, and Rose has exhibited these qualities from the day she entered our cosmetology salon floor.

Rose is on top of her game every day when it comes to getting to work and performing outstanding service. Rose is a great student and we cannot wait to see her blossom into an even stronger stylist as her days here progress!

Emanuel Barraza

Emanuel has shown great leadership and attentiveness when it comes to new students and current classmates. His kind ways and his eagerness to motivate and help others has been a great help in past months.

Emanuel’s example to help and motivate has had a domino effect on many other students who now strive to follow his leadership. Another great trait Emanuel has shown is professionalism. If he is ever in the eye of the clients or his peers, he maintains a very professional attitude. Emanuel is already a great barber, and we cannot wait to see what his future holds!

Ricardo Garcia

Though he is one of our newer freshman, Ricardo has been involved and eager to learn since day one. He has great communication skills and is unafraid to show clients and the other students who he is. He’s on top of every task and gives his full effort no matter what it is. He’s also never afraid to ask questions or get validation that he’s made the right choice.

One of our instructors had this to say about Ricardo:

“If he is already this eager as a freshman, I can’t wait to see the barber he becomes once he hits the client floor.”

Your Future Starts Here

Think you’d be a star in our classroom? We don’t doubt that you’d be a great addition to our school! To learn more about our various programs you can either visit our program page or contact us here. We’d love to see your name on one of our future student highlights!

Are you tired of scrolling through job posts for boring position after boring position? Are you unhappy in your current career? Are you looking for something more fulfilling and exciting? We think you should consider a career in barbering. If you’ve never considered barbering as an option for your future, we suggest that you check yourself against these five traits.

1. You Love a Craft

You’ve always longed to be a master at something, especially something you can put your hands on. Skills like woodworking, mechanics, and welding have always called to you, but you’re looking for something more. You want to work with people, you want to be creative.

You have probably found that traditional learning settings don’t work for your personality. You need a place where you can learn hands on and at a faster pace. Barbering can provide all of this to you! Barbering allows you to harness your creativity and your need to become a master of what you do, all while allowing you to learn in an environment you’ve always searched for.

2. You Want to Be Influential

You love the idea of being in the spotlight. While professional sports stars and celebrities are cool, you never wanted that kind of fame. You want to be a thought leader, someone who inspires others to follow in your footsteps. You want to be the trendsetter and innovator of your field.

Have you ever checked out the Instagram profiles of barbers? We suggested you check out #barbers on IG. You’ll find talented barbers from all across the globe practicing their craft and becoming influencers every day. That could be you. With hard work, the right training, and the desire to be an influencer in your field, barbering could be your launchpad to a future at center stage.

3. You Are Good With People

Working alone is boring. Who wants to be alone all day when you could work alongside people who are like-minded and have the same goals as you do? People that you can bounce ideas off of and help brainstorm the latest and greatest? Being at a desk all day is a lonely way to live life. You want a job where you can interact with people, be creative, chat and share stories, and make your mark on the world known to others.

4. You Like to Take Matters Into Your Own Hands

You don’t want a job working for someone else. The idea of being on a “management track” inside a big, faceless corporation almost scares you. You’ve always taken matters into your own hands, lead the pack, and paved your own path. You want to continue to do so in your career. The idea of working for yourself, starting your own business, or being freelance excites you.

5. You’re Near American Beauty College

Are you located in the Palmdale or West Covina, CA areas? Then you should come in and take a look at American Beauty College (ABC)! We offer a barbering program that can teach you the theoretical and practical skills of barbering in as little as 11 months. You could be on your way toward a career that excites you and pushes you to be your best in less than a year.

American Beauty College, or ABC as our students lovingly call us, is a place where students can reach for their dreams. At ABC, we believe in the power of two principles that are basics of success: Attitude and Hard Work. When our students put in the time and focus toward their goals, we can’t help but want to highlight them. Read about our two students of the month for September 2018 that emulate these values.

Bre Anna Hanki

Bre Anna has been a delight since she first started with us here at ABC. A cosmetology student at our West Covina, CA location, she has creativity and competition in her bones! She is a star student who has always taken initiative at every opportunity. She is a source of encouragement to her fellow students and is always happy to lend a helping hand to those around her. Bre Anna loves to style hair and even took 3rd place in our perming competition in July!

Not only is she a positive person in general, but she is a strong influence on those around her to be the same. She is the essence of what a great attitude at ABC can do for your education experience and for your growth in the beauty industry. Very independent by nature, and intelligent to boot, Bre Anna deserves a round of applause for her hard work and efforts here at our school. Be sure to follow her on Instagram here. Congrats, Bre Anna, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!

Angel Lopez

Angel Lopez is truly what we look for in a student here at American Beauty College. A barbering student at our West Covina campus, he is a force to be reckoned with. Always on trend, and on top of his work, he is truly focused and is always looking for a challenge. Angel is an awesome and detail-oriented student. Better yet, he is a great friend to his fellow classmates, never saying no to requests for help.

Service-oriented, Angel always works very hard to meet the expectations of his clients, too. Many times, when people think of barbering as strictly a men’s hair profession. However, barbering is more than that! It is about the overall service experience a guest can have, as well as the other services for scalp treatments, hot towel, and beard grooming services. Angel thinks outside the box and never settles for the bare minimum at brings that to ABC every single day. Angel is always striving to learn something new everyday. Angel has truly been a joy and gift to have in class and we can wait to see where his new skills take him.

Do You Have What It Takes?

We believe in our students. We believe that what they put into their beauty school education can be the difference between dreaming of success and reaching those dreams. An education at ABC can help you be the best version of you, just like Bre Anna and Angel. We believe that you could have what it takes to be the next student of the month!

We’d love to talk with you about come by for a tour of either of our campuses in Palmdale and West Covina. Contact us today!

Here at American Beauty College (ABC) we love to celebrate the successes of our students! From the day they set foot into our classrooms to the day they graduate, we encourage and highlight every achievement, big and small. This month we wanted to highlight two of our amazing students. One that is graduating this month and another who just started their journey. Check out their stories!

Karina Montoya

Karina is a barbering student at our West Covina campus. Throughout her time here she has shown great initiative when it comes to practical and theoretical learning. Within her class she serves as the shop manager. With that title Karina is in charge of making sure that the class stays orderly and on time. She ensures cleaning is done, assignments are passed out and collected when they are finished, and helps with any extracurricular activities. Her instructor says, “She has been a pleasure to have in class. I hope she keeps this positive, driven attitude that all hairdressers need to have.”

Karina is outstanding in her class, especially in being a helping hand. She also helps everyone feel welcomed, especially newcomers! It is truly amazing. We want to congratulate and express our admiration for Karina. Her instructor had a final word before she leaves our campus, “Thank you for being a positive human being!”

Martin Rivera

Martin is another barbering student of ours at the West Covina location. He has just started with us her at ABC, and we’ve be impressed at his dedication to his craft! We asked Martin how he went from freshman to the newest featured student. He said, “I have always done more than expected of me due to loving what I do!”

We appreciate that Martin has taken our mission to heart to always work hard. In this industry hard work will drive your future to its fullest potential! Because we have been so impressed with Martin’s success, we asked him to share a piece of advice with students who want to become the next highlighted student at ABC. “Always do what your instructors tell you to do and more. Do more than what is asked of you so that they know how interested you are.”

Martin’s current goals include to expand his knowledge and graduate, but his career goals stretch further. He dreams of opening a barber shop in the future. What a great goal that is, Martin! Your education is the first step to achieve that! We asked him to share what drives him on this career path. He said, “I have always liked to help people and [make] them feel happy. This career allows me to do that and I love it!”

Thank You!

We want to thank both students we have highlighted this month for all their hard work and dedication to learning. It is a joy to see students like Karina and Martin succeed. At American Beauty College (ABC) we know that students are the backbone not only of the future of the beauty industry, but of the spirit and culture of our school. The support, the dedication and the determination of our students and staff make us who we are, and help us to continue to see our students through to graduation, and toward the careers they dream about.

This month we are featuring three students who have embodied that drive and desire, and are committed to their future! Their positive attitudes are a wonderful influence upon many around them and we are honored to have them as part of our school.

Get to know them below.

Kevin Garcia

Kevin’s philosophy has always been to live and work toward the future that he sees for himself. It is that mind set that has placed Kevin as a positive force in our school. We’ve watched him make great efforts to master the skills and styles that he needs to reach his dreams.

As a barbering student at our West Covina campus, Kevin approaches everything head first, by not being afraid to fail, and always being ready to learn from mistakes. This mentality has spread like wildfire through our school, and we know this will help Kevin find the success he desires, first in graduation, and finally in owning his own barbershop one day.

Kevin wants more than to just find financial freedom, however, he truly wants to make an impact and give back to those around him. “It might not seem like a big deal to give back but the fact that you can interact with people and get to know many different outlooks of life, well to me, that is the best thing in the world!” This is why we are honored to have Kevin at American Beauty College.

Seon Tadesse

Seon is a star cosmetology student at our West Covina campus. We are so happy to have Seon as part of our family! She is a positive spirit who spreads joy and dedication everywhere she goes – not to mention that this a girl who is going places.

Seon has big dreams for her future, but she has already taken great strides to get there! Being in the top 20% of the industry may seem like a lofty goal for some – but not for Seon! With a hunger for learning that simply can’t be satiated, she is excited to master any skill that comes her way and to always give her clients a great experience – and a great cut!

Seon prides herself on her ability to connect and to listen to each person that sits in her chair, and to help them feel amazing! It’s just an extra bonus that comes with this career.” she says.

Congrats Seon! We are so proud of all you have accomplished, and all that is yet to come.

Kevyn Rendon-Rios

Kevyn is a freshman in barbering at our West Covina campus, and although he has not been with us long, he has done amazing things in the time he has been part of the ABC family.

While one of his main goals is to become financially independent and provide for his family, he also seeks after a much greater goal: to show that anything is possible in the barbering industry. He knows that accomplishing that will take a lot of hard work, which is fine with him! He looks forward to learning and growing his skills every day.

A tenacious student, Kevyn is committed to dedicating his life to learning, and to becoming a master in the skills he needs to some day open his own barber shop and create the future he dreams for himself.

We would like to say a huge congratulations to these students, and to all of our students who work hard everyday to reach their dreams.

If you would like to see our students in action, or if you are interested in learning how you can become part of the American Beauty College family schedule a tour at either our West Covina or our Palmdale campus today!

At American Beauty College, we strive to help each one of our students find their own personal success. This, however, is only part of the story. Celebrating each victory in their journey is an important piece in what makes up that success.

Each month we celebrate our students and their successes with our student highlights feature that displays our amazing students and the accomplishments they have reached.

We are proud to announce our featured students and all of their hard work.

Rachel Islas

Rachel is a junior level cosmetology student at our West Covina location who loves cutting hair and strives to make each of her clients feel amazing long before they leave her chair! Since she is a junior, Rachel knows that she has a lot of work ahead of her, but she is excited for it. As a cosmetologist she is eager to learn and constantly expand and grow her knowledge so that she can best help her clients.

Rachel is excited for everything that lies ahead of her and has dreams of opening her own salon, and perhaps even returning to ABC as a instructor one day! We are so proud of all Rachel has done and wish her luck in her future endeavours!

Elvis Medina

A barbering student at West Covina, Elvis is a senior who is following in the family tradition! Coming from generations of barbers, Elvis comes to school every day ready to learn something new and complete his goals. It’s this positive attitude and eagerness to excel that has really set Elvis apart from many of his peers.

We are excited to recognize Elvis for all his hard work and are excited to see where life takes him as he follows in his family’s tradition and seeks to open his own barber shop.

Joseph Yates

A freshman at our West Covina campus, Joseph is a credit to our barbering program and a true example to his classmates. His infectious, go-getter attitude spreads quickly as he challenges not only himself, but those around him to stretch themselves and try their hardest to learn and master new skills.

”Always stay hungry never settle … even when you achieve you always work harder to get to a place you wouldn’t expect to be and never lose sight of who you are no matter how far or high up you get know in this industry.”

This career seeker won’t be stopping at barbering, either. Joseph has plans to cross over into cosmetology and establish himself as a brand ambassador and make a career of his passions both online and in his future salon.

We wish him all the luck and are excited to see where his tenacity takes him.
