A completely satisfying bread and meat stew ,thareed was one of favorite dishes of Prophet Muhammad(pbuh). The bread used is made usually with whole grains ,mainly barley. The meat stew has mild spicy flavors and chunky pumpkins. A very heart warming dish on winter cold nights. You could definitely make this spicier and add other kind of vegetables like sweet potatoes, carrots, butter nut squash or zucchini. Just make sure you are not making it too spicy or skipping the vegetables or the bread without barley ,cause we want this to be nutritious as well as easily digestible.

RECIPE Barley Wheat Flat Bread Ingredients
1 cup whole barley flour ,fine ground
1/2 cup whole wheat flour, fine ground
2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
pinch of sea salt
Make the dough by mixing enough water with flour ,oil and salt to make a smooth dough
Knead and rest the dough for an hour before rolling the bread
Meanwhile prepare the meat stew
When the dough has rested ,make equal portion balls
Sprinkle some all purpose flour on work surface
Roll each portion as thin as you can
Heat a griddle pan ,cook the flatbread about 2 minutes each side.
Spread some olive oil on the flatbread after you get it off the heat.
Finish making the rest of the flatbread
Lamb Stew with Bottle Gourd (green long Indian pumpkin)
1 medium size bottle gourd ,peel, cored and cut in chunks
1 lb lamb meat ,medium pieces with bones
1 medium onion sliced
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1/2 teaspoon minced ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 tablespoon olive oil
salt as per taste
cilantro for garnish
Heat oil on medium flame ,add the onions, cumin seeds and saute until translucent about 5 minutes
Add the minced ginger , garlic, turmeric and pepper ,saute another 2-3 minutes
Add the meat ,salt,2 cups of water ,cover and cook 45 minutes in a skillet or 20 minutes in a pressure cooker.
After meat is tender ,add the vegetables, cook another 10-15 minutes until vegetables are tender on low heat.
To serve ,tear in pieces of flatbread and spread around center of shallow plate, pour the warm stew in the middle ,garnish with cilantro ,let the bread soak in the flavors for few minutes then enjoy it.
Hadith Trivia Related to Thareed : It was narrated by Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari (radhi Allahu ta'ala anhu) that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said, "Many men reached perfection but none among the women reached perfection except Mary, the daughter of ' Imran, and Asia, Pharoah's wife. And the superiority of A'ishah (radhi Allahu ta'ala anha) to other women is like the superiority of tharid to other kinds of food."

Anas Radiyallahu 'Anhu reports that a tailor invited Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam. Thareed was served, in which dubbaa (dodhi -gourd) was added. As Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam loved dubbaa (dodhi-gourd) he began eating it. Anas Radiyallahu 'Anhu says:
"After that no food was prepared for me, wherein if gourd could be added, it was added"
