Flights from Toronto to Glasgow, Scotland are available in October 2019 for $383 CAD roundtrip including taxes, using a combination of Westjet and LoganAir.

However, there are a few factors that make me less than excited about these flights.

1) They are only bookable through one specific booking site, in British Pounds. This can sometimes be a warning sign that the deal isn't really bookable at all.

2) The flights involve a half day, overnight layover in London (from 7:30 PM to about 1 PM the next day), during which time you need to transfer from London Southend Airport (SEN) to London Gatwick (LGW). And they are 100km apart!

Availability for travel

October 2019

How to find and book this deal

1. Go to the Skyscanner UK website (currency is GBP)

2. Search for a flight from Toronto (YYZ) to Glasgow, Scotland (GLA)

Try one of the following date combinations:

Oct 1 to Oct 8
Oct 8 to Oct 15
Oct 22 to Oct 29

The flight you're looking for is 218 GBP roundtrip, which works out to $383 CAD roundtrip when booked with a Canadian credit card, including the typical 2.5% foreign exchange fee.

If you use a credit card that does not charge foreign exchange fees, it will be even cheaper.

The flight should have layovers that look like this:

screenshot from Skyscanner UK

Note that this flight option may not be at the top of the Skyscanner UK search results. It might be 3 or 4 flights down.

There are other flight options out there in this price range. I can't imagine the vast majority of them being attractive to anyone. Many of them involve airport changes both on the way there, and on the way home.

Other flight options involve 2 stops on the way to Glasgow.

The dates listed above are the only dates I've seen that have a flight option that *might* be attractive enough for someone to use.

This is an option with a pretty decent flight on the way there (1 stop in Halifax for 90 minutes). And on the way home, you have about 17 hours to check out London and make your way between the two London airports.

You can find many other flights in this price range on a lot of other dates in September and October (starting from about mid-September onwards). But like I said, the dates above are the only dates I've seen with a 'not completely terrible' flight option, assuming you might want to check out London for an evening.

Japan Airlines and American Airlines have dropped the price of their flights from Toronto to Osaka, Japan down to between $639 and $689 CAD roundtrip including taxes.

The flights have 2 stops each way, usually in a U.S. city (Chicago) and Tokyo. Overall, it's about 5 hours of extra travel time (each way) versus the fastest flights from Toronto to Osaka.

Note that Osaka has 2 airports. Some flights are in and out of Osaka's Itami (ITM) airport. With other flights, you fly into ITM, but come home from KIX.

From Osaka, it's a 26 minute train ride ($17) to the beautiful city of Kyoto if you use the special rapid trains on the JR Kyoto Line.

Japan Airlines is a very good airline (5 star rating with Skytrax).

Availability for travel

September, October, November, early and late December 2019

January, February 2020

NOTE: As of 11 AM EST, a few dates around late December to early January (Christmas / winter break) are still available, such as December 29, 30, 31 to January 9th.

How to find and book this deal

1. Start with a Google Flights search like this one:

Google Flights: Toronto to Osaka, Japan

- Click on the departure date box to open up the calendar view and browse for cheap date combinations.

- Look for the dates that are between $673 and $706 roundtrip.

- You may find on Google Flights that you get to a 'dead end' where you can't actually book the flight for the price shown. What you need to do is...

2. Go to Skyscanner or Kayak

- search for a flight from Toronto (YYZ) to Osaka, Japan (OSA)

- use the same dates you found on Google Flights.

- TIP: For these flights, it can be worth trying both Skyscanner and Kayak, as sometimes one will have cheap flights that the other doesn't.

- See below for more tips on booking these flights.

screenshot from Skyscanner

screenshot from Kayak

Tips for booking these flights

- Be sure to avoid any flights that have an airport change, which require you to get from one Tokyo airport to the other when making your connection. You do *not* want those flights.

After your Skyscanner search completes, they make it pretty obvious when a flight has an airport change...

- If you can't find any flights without airport changes, you may want to try slightly different dates, which can help.

- Note that with some flights you fly into Osaka's KIX airport, but fly home from Osaka's ITM airport ...

- The fastest flights have about 20 hours of total travel time (including layovers) each way.

After months of struggling, it's official, Icelandic budget airline WOW Air has ceased all operations.

The airline announced early this morning that it had ended all operations effective immediately, and canceled all remaining flights.

What travelers with WOW Air bookings can do

WOW has set up a page with recommendations for those passengers who are booked on flights that will now never take off.

For starters, you can request a chargeback from the credit card company that you booked your flight with.

For those who have traveled recently with a WOW flight, and need a flight home, WOW Air recommends requesting 'rescue fares' from other airlines. These are discounted fares that other airlines offer when an airline goes under.

WOW says it will publish information on these potential options shortly.

Icelandair has set up a page with options for stranded WOW Air passengers that were due to return between March 28 and April 11.

If you purchased trip insurance or paid for the flight with a credit card that had trip coverage, it should cover any unforeseen expenses due to the cancellations.
