What is Acne Awareness Month?
It’s a month dedicated to those who have acne, to help them gather advice on how to treat it and how to best take care of skin. What is Acne?
Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that tends to occur around puberty which is why it is often seen as a teenage condition. This is due to the surge in hormones, known as androgens, released throughout the body at this stage of life. This surge of hormones cause’s oil glands to become over-active and as a result produce too much sebum. Too much sebum can cause pores to become clogged which also increases in an overgrowth of Propionibacterium (the bacteria on skin known to cause acne) which causes spots to develop.
Blocked, infected or inflamed pores can cause whiteheads – a raised red spot with a white head.
Blackheads develop when the clogged pore is open and is exposed to the air.
Cysts can form when the pores blockage is deep inside the pore.
Pustules, a red inflamed pimple, occurs when bacteria grows inside the blocked pore.
It can affect the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms.
Who is affected by Acne?

Though considered a teenage issue, adult acne is becoming more common affecting many over 20’s. Hormones are constantly fluctuating throughout life and is most likely the cause of many cases of adult acne.
Women who suffer from acne tend to see it occur around the jawline and chin area. Birth control pills, pregnancy, post-pregnancy, PCOS or menstruation can cause breakouts. It is not definitively known why this happens but it’s believed the particular oil glands in that area may be more sensitive to hormonal fluctuations. Chin acne typically appears as red angry bumps, occasionally situated next to pus containing pimples, and there may even be some painful deeper nodules.
Men are also prone to acne. This is due to testosterone levels which is responsible for producing excess sebum making men’s skin more susceptible to acne and blemishes. Men also tend to have larger pores and produce more sweat. These factors can cause skin to attract dirt which can clog pores threatening breakouts and scarring.

Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine, which blocks the chemical adenosine that turns off the stress receptors in skin.
