Packing light can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. It is also undeniably admirable, highly beneficial, and the more you do it, the better you become.
There are two types of travellers in the world – the one who travels with her entire house in five pieces of luggage and the ‘light traveller.’ The former appears at the airport with insufficient arms to pull her bags, while the other wears a cute crossbody bag and pulls a luggage conveniently. Of course, the first person paid check-in baggage fees, while the light traveller had to bring one luggage only to maximize her free 7kg carry-on baggage allowance.
Who do you think would enjoy the trip more? Who seems to be the more frequent traveller? It’s the light traveller.
It is a skill, really, to be able to exercise being a minimalist with your traveling stuff when you want to ensure you’re not forgetting anything. After all, you’ll be gone for days and can’t ask someone to find that Hello Kitty shirt in your closet and ship it to you. Traveling light, however, has many other benefits than looking cute at the airport and saving on check-in baggage fees.
Benefits of Traveling Light
First, packing light means not having to worry about checking in your bags. You’ll save time on luggage scans and money on overweight fees. Once you’ve learned the art, you just need to come to the airport, be cute, and take OOTD photos if you like while waiting for your flight. Next, arrival at your destination, you wouldn’t have to wait for your luggage at the baggage carousel and proceed to exploring! Especially if you have a tight schedule and itinerary, the more time you save, the better.
Other major benefits include being in control of your belongings and not stressing on them getting lost or damaged. Also, you’ll save yourself from a sore back and feet from lugging a heavy bag around. Walks during your trip would definitely be easier and more meaningful since you’d be able to come to wherever corner you want. You’d be able to secure everything away in airport or hostel lockers and find it easy to unpack too.
So where do you start? Here are some tips you can follow to ensure your next trip would be easy-breezy:
Start with a smaller suitcase instead of using your big suitcase because you would tend to fill whatever bag you have.
Buy travel scales for accuracy and don’t be like the weird ones who like guessing the weight of their bags. It would be too late for you if you weigh at the airport.
Use a packing list and stick to it. Pack only the essentials and avoid going through your things.
Opt for compression packing cubes for your clothes. They serve as a natural limit on how many clothes you can take and the compression element halves the amount of space your clothes take up.
Don’t pack shoes for every occasion. Stick to a maximum of 3 dual-purpose pairs.
Use shower caps instead of bulky shoe covers. It’s cheap and you can easily find it at the department store or supermarket.
Use a thin drawstring wash bag and skip the bulky beauty organizers.
Go for lightweight and technical winter clothing and don’t give in to the temptation of bringing thick and heavy clothes.
Wear your largest items instead of packing them. Airports are largely the same temperature regardless of the destination and flights are usually cold, so you can keep the boots on.
Towels are heavy, right? Bring a sarong instead.
Take only your essential medications and leave the ‘just in case’ items
Check out solid toiletries instead of liquids. The latter are smaller, lighter, and won’t tip you over your liquids allowance.
Invest in some travel sized versions of your perfume. Get yourself a travel sized atomiser.
Call to check if your hotel has a travel hairdryer if you don’t have a travel hairdryer.
Yes, you want a good ‘sound trip’ during your flight, but earphones is a much better idea than your favorite headphones.
Packing light can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. It’s also highly beneficial and the more you do it, the better you become. How many places do you want to go to this year and how many trips do you think would you have in this lifetime? Do you want them to feature mostly memories of you looking haggard and tired from worrying and carrying heavy luggage around? Time to learn the art of traveling light.
Many people enjoy camping more than a trip to the beach. There’s just something about the fresh air that gets cooler and cooler as you keep walking, building a temporary home around a campfire, and staring at the sky full of stars.
Your reading this can only mean one thing: you’re thinking of camping with some special people and you want to be prepared. Since camping is a project, it requires a few equipment and preparation to ensure an enjoyable and memorable activity. It doesn’t have to break the bank though, you’d only need basic gear and know-how.
Let’s start with the most important things you need to bring:
Some campsites offer tents and accommodation, while others don’t. It’s better to be prepared and have your own so you can be sure you won’t run into inconvenience later on. Tents come in a variety of sizes, but what you need to look after is performance. Take time to speak with the salesperson and ask about the size, its installation, and all the other things you need to know.
Pads and Sleeping Bags
Again, this is something you’d need the salesperson to help you with. Most sleeping bags have comfort ratings based on temperature. Remember, it can be chilly in the field especially for someone in your family. Ask the campsite for the temperature in the area where you’ll be staying.
Choose a stable cooktop that lets you control the flame. A two-burner is a better option than the single-burner, as it offers versatility. Go for a foldable one.
Other things you’d need to bring that actually don’t need reminding are clothes, hygiene, and insect repellent to protect yourself from mosquitoes and other insects. You may even bring mosquito coils and citronella candles to shoo away bugs.
What to Do
● Ensure you have enough time to establish your camp at a relaxed pace.
You can’t expect to have fun when you’re hungry and tired from traveling and it’s already late and dark. It’s important to allot ample time on the day of your departure for you not to rush breaking camp.
● Bring food that you actually like and enjoy.
You wouldn’t live on bread and soup alone when you go camping. Bring a cooler so you can take fresh meat, vegetables, and eggs with you, among others you keep in your refrigerator.
● Make the most out of the natural resources, historic sites, and even activities around your campsite.
Give yourself more reasons to enjoy and things to look forward to. You’re free to just relax and enjoy fresh air, though, if that’s just what you want to do.
What Not to Do
● Don’t be too ambitious
It is best to start small, like go camping in the next long weekend, to get a feel of the experience. You have to know if the activity is for you and it’s something you’d really want to do. It would also give you an idea on things you may need and should not forget to prepare for.
● Don’t miss the chance to unplug from the outside world
Many feature mobile and even wi-fi connection, but to truly enjoy the activity, you need to stop being in touch. It’s one of the many rewards you can get from camping. Instead, you may bring magazines, books, cards, or board games to pass the time and bond with the other campers, say it suddenly rained.
● Don’t bring too much food
You may have a cooler with you, but it wouldn’t be long until it can no longer preserve it contents. Uncooked food and leftovers may be unconsumable when you go back home. Plan your meals properly prior to your camping activity.
Camping is definitely an activity every person should try in their lifetime. It could be scary to leave the comforts of your home and sleep outdoors, but waking up to a nice sunrise is priceless. It’s the view, challenge of getting through the night, the whole journey. Try it – who knows, you may even enjoy it more than going to the beach. Expect yourself to be a happier and an even better person after the activity.
Bacolod City is known to be the City of Smiles for the people here always wear a smile, a obvious trait of being hospitable but historically the name City of Smiles is deepy rooted to the resiliency of the people wherein Masskara Festival was born. Bacolod is derived from the word bakolod, old hiligaynon or ilongo word for a “hill, mound, rise, hillock, down, any small eminence or elevation since the resettlement was founded on a stony, hilly area. It was officially called Ciudad de Bacólod (City of Bacolod) when Municipalidad de Bacólod (Municipality of Bacolod) was converted into a city in 1938.
This city is known as the Sugarcane capital of the Philippines evident in different sweet treats you can indulge when you visit Bacolod and even bring some as pasalubong such as piaya, otap, napoleones and etc. It’s known also as the origin of Chicken Inasal. I must say the Bacolod is a foodie’s haven for there are a lot of restaurants and cafes you can dine when you visit this amazing city.
Aside from food, you will definitely enjoy your visit by exploring nature’s wonders such as hot springs, falls, white sand beaches and mountains which are accessible. You can also join the grand celebration in the Masskara Festival that is one of the well known festival in the Philippines and synonymous to Bacolod City.
A LITTLE HISTORY OF MASSKARA FESTIVAL

The festival was first held in 1980, a period of crisis wherein sugarcane price reached its all time low as sugar substitutes captured the market followed by another tragedy in April 22 of that year wherein inter-island vessel MV Don Juan carrying many Negrenses and prominent families in Bacolod City, collided with the tanker Tacloban City and sank in Tablas Strait off Mindoro, a tragedy that took 750 lives.
With the crisis and tragedy, the local government headed by the late Mayor Jose “Digoy” Montalvo appropriated a seed fund and enjoined the city’s artistic community, civic and business groups to hold a “festival of smiles”, to live up to the City’s moniker as the “City of Smiles”. They reasoned that a festival was also a good opportunity to pull the residents out of the pervasive gloomy atmosphere brought by the Don Juan Tragedy. The initial festival was held during the City’s Charter Day celebration on October 19, 1980 and was steered by an organizing committee. It was a declaration by the people of the city that no matter how tough and bad the times were, Bacolod City was going to pull through, survive, and in the end, triumph.
