The Tyee 14 traditional rowboat is renowned for the way it carries a load and comfortably handles wind, waves, and choppy tidal waters. It has a fullness of beam which extends along the hull, and the transom is three inches broader than the Whitehall Spirit® 14. The Tyee 14 traditional rowboat has an “untucked” transom rather than the “wineglass” shape of a Whitehall. The fuller hull shape adds buoyancy aft, making the boat suitable for carrying a heavier load and, if desired, a small outboard.

Two full-size rowing stations enable tandem rowing or a choice of rowing position depending on the load aboard. With no load aboard, it is usually rowed from the aft position. It can easily be operated by one and can be rowed facing forward while sitting in the aft (rear) position using the forward oarlocks.

For the traditional rower, this model represents a boat that is practical and perfect for rowing in lakes or the ocean and easily handles rough water. It was designed and built originally by the famous pioneer boat builder Joe Painter in 1910, specifically for rowboat salmon fishing off the coast of Campbell River, BC.

Many notable persons have enjoyed rowing and salmon fishing from this design including Zane Grey, Bob Hope and John Wayne.

Owner Raul Barbarbieri of Milan, Italy, states:

“My Tyee 14 traditional rowboat is beautiful and her harmonious and classic lines have a fascination that is lacking in modern boats. Looking at her, one can understand the care and love that went into her making: the apparent simplicity of detail denotes careful study to identify simple and perfect solutions, the working, both of the glass fiber and of the wooden parts, a truly amazing finish.”

This fixed-seat traditional rowboat features built-in buoyancy forward and aft, and is also available with a solid teak floorboard system or a fully-buoyant “Ocean Tender Floor” which adds substantial extra reserve buoyancy to the boat (an important safety feature). The forward storage locker enables gear such as small gas tanks, tackle boxes, or lifejackets to be left aboard, while being kept dry and secure.

This Classic Whitehall Spirit® Tyee 14 model is also available with slide seat sculling gear or as a sailing model.

Tough Co-polymer Construction

The hull and decks are constructed from virtually indestructible co-polymer plastic, using a heat-and-vacuum forming process called thermoforming. The hull and deck are rigid and stiff thanks to a inner specially designed inter deck and the medium itself. Unlike rotocast polyethylene this boat will not change shape when exposed to hot sunlight. This is necessary for a performance rowing boat. The Solo 14’s exterior has an acrylic coating bonded to it known as ‘Solarcote’. It is UV-proof and retains a glossy yacht-like finish. Co-polymer is much more impact-resistant than a fiberglass hull, does not go chalky or dull like gelcoat , It simplyd stays shiny and looking good for years. Our commitment to quality and superior design has produced the absolute best boat of its type in the marketplace. The materials and copolymer plastic used in construction of the Solo 14 are 100% recyclable.

The Whitehall Spirit® Solo 14 rowing boat is distinctly elegant and extremely seaworthy, with a pedigree that goes back for hundreds of years.

To keep the Solo 14 looking new, all that’s required is a few minutes spent wiping it down with a damp cloth when needed. This means there is much more time to spend actually using the boat, having fun, and keeping fit. It will never need painting or ever waxing due to the Solorcote® exterior finish.

Standard Features

The Solo 14® comes equipped with all of the features listed here as standard and included. The only factory options to consider are the stainless steel keelstrip, motor pads and a custom boat name. These can be seen under “Factory Options” in the Accessories section of the website.

Sliding Seat
This slide seat design has been used for over a century. Seat holes and cutaway fit the coccyx and sit bones. Anodized tracks allow smooth sliding.

Footstops
Adjustable foot stretcher fits any leg length. Velcro straps enable regular footwear to be worn by the rower. Heel cups adjust up or down for varying shoe sizes.

Outriggers
These cast aluminum outriggers create the correct span for 9’6” carbon fiber sculling oars. The rower can remain seated when the outrigger is hinged inboard.

Outriggers Inboard
Outriggers hinge inboard when coming alongside a dock or boat. By being closer to the dock, the boat is more stable, safer and easier to get into or out of.

Fixed Seat
The sliding seat removes easily and the fixed seat snaps into place. The fixed seat stows between the track risers, flush to the floor for convenient storage.

Forward Oarlocks
Forward oarlocks sockets allow rowing from the forward fixed seat. Enables up to four people to be carried.

Non-Skid
Top quality nonskid located on the cockpit floor prevents slipping and makes it safer and easier to move around. Dog-friendly.

Drain plug
Pulling the plug when storing the boat out of the water keeps the hull from collecting rain water and makes draining easier when hosing the boat down.

Mushroom Cleat
Cleats are used for hanging fenders or spring lines when tying to a dock. The mushroom shape has no sharp corners to help prevent snagging on clothing.

Batten Ends
The batten ends come installed ready for battens. Battens enable a boat cover to shed rain water. See the accessories page for ordering a set of custom Lexan battens.

Sturdy Bow/Stern eyes
A recessed bow eye protects other boats from damage and takes the worry out of coming alongside. They are strong enough to lift or tow the boat

Tie-Downs
Conveniently secure your cushions or gear using these durable plastic tie downs, suitable for webbing strap.

Back in the early days before small engines, when Whitehall rowboats were considered the best working boats on the harbor, the 17′ Whitehall Traditional Rowboat was the favored size. This was the rowboat that could be easily handled by one person alone, but could also carry up to six people plus cargo. In those early days, Whitehall boats were used by everyone from the harbor police to water taxi operators in ports like New York City.

For the traditional rower, this model represents a boat that is practical and perfect for rowing in lakes, rivers, or on the ocean. There are three rowing stations with on-the-gunnel oarlocks. The aft or center rowing stations are great for rowing alone. Three people rowing at once is a family favorite. When taking a group of passengers for a ride, using only the forward rowing stations works well.

This fixed-seat traditional rowing model features built-in buoyancy forward and aft, and is also available with a solid teak floorboard system or a fully-buoyant “Ocean Tender Floor” which adds substantial extra reserve buoyancy to the boat (an important safety feature).

Owner Steve Jorgenson reports:

“I think I’ve already exceeded the annual legal limit on fun. The Whitehall is so stunningly beautiful that whenever I’m parked somewhere.”

Owner Robert Dunshee reports:

“The boat rows like a dream. My wife and I row tandem, but the boat rows equally well (not as fast, of course) solo. It is beautiful and we take a not-so-well-concealed pride in all the approving comments we get. In fact, being in the boat is like being a part of a lovely piece of sculpture! It’s art that one can use. The boat is easy to trailer – very important to us because we want to use it frequently; at least once or twice a week.”

BASE PRICE: $17,995.00

Complete boat with solid teak woodwork, bronze fittings, lapstrake fiberglass hull, bilge drain/plug, maintenance kit, bronze builder’s plaque, & How to Row DVD – ready to row.

The pleasure of sailing a Whitehall Spirit® 17 is enhanced by the ease of handling a classy and efficient sail rig. This sailing rowboat delights everyone from the beginner to the most ardent sailor with its ability to sail comfortably with three or four adults aboard, carry picnic supplies or camping gear, and sail in shallow water due to its kick-up rudder and bronze centerboard. All the midship fixed seats are removable for ease of crew movement while sailing and can be replaced easily if the wind drops, converting it back into an efficient rowboat.

The large sail area possible on a low mast reduces the heeling movement of the boat (tendency to tip) without sacrificing performance. This rig is fast and easy to set up. The free-standing mast requires no stays or wires and simply lifts out to stow within the boat. The mainsail on this standing lug style rig can be tacked across in full control using only the mainsheet. Reefing gear is standard and the mainsail can be reefed while out on the water.

With the sailing gear and fixed seats removed, the optional silde seat sculling gear can be installed, turning the boat into a double position “all water” scull. See the Slide Seat Whitehall 17 model.

This model features built-in buoyancy forward and aft, and is shown here with the optional removable solid teak floorboard system. An “Ocean Tender Floor” is available as well, which adds substantial extra reserve buoyancy (an important safety feature) to the boat, perfect for when the boat is used as a ship’s tender or shoreboat.

This model is also available as an expedition model, which features all of the available options including the slide seat sculling gear.

Owner Dave Wagner in Chicago reports:

“We continue to receive ooh’s and ahh’s of praise from seasoned boaters.”

BASE PRICE: $29,795.00 USD

Complete boat with solid teak woodwork, bronze fittings, lapstrake fiberglass hull, bilge drain/plug, maintenance kit, bronze builder’s plaque, three fixed seat rowing stations, pivoting bronze centerboard, kick-up rudder, Spruce mast, boom and lug, mainsail, jib, sailing gear & How to Row & Sail DVD – ready to row or sail.

Shoreside conversations stop when a pair of rowers stroke into view in a Whitehall Spirit® 17 double-position “all water” sculling rowboat. Featuring two sliding seat stations, this boat moves right along. If there’s wave action or a chop on the water, no problem – that’s what these boats are designed to handle.

Double Slide Seat Rowing Up the Thames, by Tom Gray
Tom Gray, owner of a Whitehall Spirit 17 double slide seat model, sends his short version of a rowing holiday he took with a good friend of his this May. His goal was to reach the uppermost head of the Thames River, starting from the salty end. At 07.30 on Saturday 27th May, James, a []

For a slide seat rower, this sculling rowboat can row in locations that are way too rough for a racing scull or even an open water shell. Two or three strokes take her up to speed – the long, smooth glide needs to be experienced to be believed. A speed of 4 to 5.5 knots (10 km/h) can be maintained for hours with little to no strain on the rowers. A single sculler can row this boat as well without any difficulty handling it.

The hinging bronze outriggers hold the sculls securely in place and can hinge fully inboard – totally convenient when landing at a dock, alongside a larger boat, or when on a trailer. The slide seat sculling units can be removed in minutes, as well as the fixed seats installed for traditional rowing.

Owner Charlie Parks reports:
“I arrived safe and sound in Seattle in mid-August after rowing my 17′ Whitehall down from Skagway, Alaska through the Northwest Inside Passage. The Whitehall Spirit® 17 sculling rowboat proved to be the better choice over the 14′ only because it held more gear, enabling me to row the entire 1100-mile journey with another rowing partner. Having four oars in the water is better than two on a long haul!”

This model can also be purchased as a sailing boat or even a top-of-the-line expedition model.

BASE PRICE: $22,595.00 USD

Complete boat with solid teak woodwork, bronze fittings, lapstrake fiberglass hull, bilge drain/plug, maintenance kit, bronze builder’s plaque, & How to Row DVD – ready to row or scull.

The Whitehall Spirit® 17 Expedition model is our top-of-the-line sailing & sculling rowboat and available fully equipped with all the bells and whistles. Perfect for fun day sailing, traveling farther distances while exploring coastal waters, lakes, or rivers. Needing only 6 inches of water with its bronze centerboard and rudder fully retracted, this boat can tuck into quiet, unexplored, and uncrowded spots. It’s beachable, so it’s easy to land the boat and check out the shoreline.

The sailing gear is fast and easy to install or remove, even without tools. The mainsail and jib are identical to the regular sailing model, although a bronze clew outhaul tackle is included on the boom.

The mast is 6″ longer than the standard 17′ model and rigged to hoist a roller furling light air jib. The mast is also built in two parts with a carbon fiber sleeve, enabling compact stowage inside the boat. The mast simply lifts out of its reinforced support socket. The boat can be sailed with the mast freestanding, however an additional feature is a Spectra running backstay, offering better sail shape and windward sailing ability.

The mainsail on this standing lug style rig can be tacked across in full control using only the mainsheet. Reefing gear is standard and the mainsail can be reefed while out on the water. A bowsprit and roller furling light air jib are also standard.

This rowboat also includes two slide seat sculling units with bronze hinging outriggers. Almost all the optional features are standard on this one, except for the optional teak floor or the ocean tender fully buoyant floor system.

This sailing & sculling rowboat features built-in buoyancy forward and aft, and is shown here with the optional removable solid teak floorboard system. An “Ocean Tender Floor” is available as well, which adds substantial extra reserve buoyancy (an important safety feature) to the boat, perfect for when the boat is used as a ship’s tender or shoreboat.

Harold Aune says:

“The boat sails really well in a variety of conditions. Marie Hutchinson and I sailed it to the limit in Raid Finland with no breakages and on many occasions we were the fastest boat in the fleet.” Check out the documentary movie online at Whitehall at Raid Finland.

The hull is hand-laid fiberglass, impeccably finished inside and out. The woodwork is solid teak finished in hand-rubbed oil, meaning maintenance is not an issue, and will require only about three hours per year. Copper rivets and roves are used on the gunnel, and the metal fittings are custom-cast bronze. The photo album below shows close-up details of the fine workmanship.

The woodwork is hand-picked solid teak, usually bookmatched. It is hand-rubbed with three coats of our special outdoor oil – teak does not require varnish finish. The mast and boom are made from clear, tight-grained sitka spruce and coated with three coats of marine-quality varnish.

This boat can achieve speeds that are considerably greater than its hull speed when sailing off the wind.

This traditional rowboat is often called the most beautiful rowing boat in the world. It performs as beautifully as it looks. Two full-sized rowing stations enable tandem rowing, or a choice of forward or aft (rear) rowing positions depending on the load aboard. With no load aboard, it is usually rowed from the aft position. It can easily be rowed by one, and can even be rowed facing forward by sitting in the aft (rear) position, by pushing the oars rather than pulling and utilizing the forward oarlocks.

For the traditional rower, this model represents a boat that is practical and perfect for rowing on lakes, rivers, or the ocean, and handles rough water very well. It rows easily and the glide needs to be experienced to be believed. The classic full-length keel keeps the boat tracking straight while under way, a very useful characteristic for long-distance rowing.

This fixed-seat traditional rowboat features built-in buoyancy forward and aft, and is also available with a solid teak floorboard system or with a fully buoyant “Ocean Tender Floor” which adds substantial extra reserve buoyancy to the boat.

This basic Classic Whitehall Spirit® model is also available with single seat sculling gear. See the sculling model or the sailing model.

Owner Brian Crosby reports:

“I am extremely pleased with this boat. It excels in both qualities of product and function. Without reservation, I can recommend the fine people at Whitehall to anyone in the need of an excellent rowing boat or to someone desirous of satisfying a cherished dream.”

This “all water” single sculling rowboat offers stability, comfort, and safety that is not possible in any rowing shell and you can even take along a friend or your dog. Rowing with a sliding seat uses 800 calories per hour, about double that of jogging without stress on the knees, joints, or connective tissues. For those who desire a low-impact, full-body workout, rowing a Whitehall Spirit® 14 sculling rowboat fitted with a sliding seat unit, bronze outriggers, and 9’6″ sculls is the perfect solution. Some owners fish for salmon or muskie, some use their boats as ships’ shoreboats, and others use them as their personal exercise machines. This boat is ideal for lakes and oceans, and is of course excellent for sculling in calm water and handles wind and waves with ease.

Rowing is perfectly feasible in locations that are way too rough for a racing scull or open water shell – the Whitehall is right at home in wind and waves. Two or three strokes take her up to speed – the long, smooth glide needs to be experienced to be believed. A speed of four to 5 knots (6 to 9 km/h) can be maintained for hours with little to no strain on the rower. Almost anyone can row this boat well with no difficulty handling it.

The Whitehall Spirit’s sliding seat unit and/or aft rowing seat can be installed or removed from this rowboat in a minute or two. On a sailing model, the slide seat unit is mounted in a position over top of the centerboard. The hinged bronze outriggers self-stow by folding inboard when not in use, resting on a copper coin inset into the solid teak fixed seat. (See the photo album).

All Whitehall Spirit® boats feature built-in buoyancy forward and aft, and is shown here with the optional removable solid teak floorboard system. An “Ocean Tender Floor” is available as well, which adds substantial extra reserve buoyancy to the boat (an important safety feature).

Owner Dale Colclasure, of Little Rock, Arkansas says:

“Thanks, Whitehall, for taking the time to make such a fine investment. An investment in my exercise regimen and one I will be able to pass down to my grandkids, who also enjoy riding with me.”
