From ube soft serve to watermelon sorbet, a round up of NYC’s best ice cream shops! Sit back, buckle up, we’re going on a fun ride today!
– Soft Swerve –
First up, Soft Swerve! An ongoing trend of incorporating atypical ingredients into dessert is something I openly welcome. From black charcoal coconut ash ice cream to raindrop cakes, New York City is home to a variety of extremely unique dessert options.
In 2017, the ube craze hit NYC and Soft Swerve opened. Serving soft serve flavors of matcha, black sesame, and of course the infamous purple swirl, ube, Soft Swerve is home to a variety of unique tastings. For those who are not familiar with this flavor, ube is actually a root vegetable or commonly know as the purple yam, found in the Philippines and other Asian countries. Ube soft serve has a subtle earthy and nutty flavor with a smooth and creamy texture. The ube at Soft Swerve is a win in my book and a must-try if you’re in the area!
– Il Laboratorio del Gelato –
Next up, Laboratorio Gelato! One of my favorite travel destinations is Italy, land of the most incredible and delicious gelato. Thus, I was one happy girl when we stumbled by Il Laboratorio Del Gelato. Situated directly across from Katz Delicatessen (“I’ll have what she’s having!”), Il Laboratorio Del Gelato offers different and unique flavors from a decadent hazelnut amaretto crunch to an exotic cactus pear and close to 300 different flavors available. A unique aspect of this gelato shop is that they have an open kitchen and are constantly creating and experimenting with new flavors. They treat their kitchen as a custom lab.
For those missing authentic Italian gelato, I highly recommend a visit to Laboratorio Gelato! You can have your classic flavors and also sample a few of their more unique and exotic flavors.
– Ample Hills Creamery –
Next stop, Ample Hills! If you’re searching for extremely sweet and decadent flavors, Ample Hills is the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Offering zany and seriously creative flavors, Ample Hills stays away from classic flavors (though they are offered) and shines in their unique flavor creations.
Each Ample Hills location features a distinct and custom flavor relative to the neighborhood, such as the “Nectar of the Queens” at their Astoria spot, a smooth honey cinnamon ice cream base mixed with generous pieces of Baklava and Galaktoboureko (creamy custard pie with a crispy filo crust) lent from local bakery, Artopolis Bakery. And they also offer pretzel cones, creating a sweet + salty flavor combination with their ice cream.
– Van Leeuwen –
Now to Van Leeuwen! Van Leeuwen first became hugely popular with their fleet of buttercup yellow ice cream trucks in New York and Los Angeles. Once they established storefronts in both cities, and in New York especially, their popularity rose even higher. Van Leeuwen offers classic flavors, but where they really shine is in their vegan ice cream.
Their vegan flavors are beautifully creamy and smooth with each flavor profile prominent. Van Leeuwen’s vegan flavors are concocted from a combination of homemade cashew milk, coconut oil, and cocoa butter. To be honest, I can’t tell the difference between their vegan and non-vegan flavors! Also if you’re looking for the perfect photo opportunity on a hot summer day, I can confirm that vegan ice cream does not melt as quickly in the sun as regular ice cream (scroll back to the photos from Ample Hills). My go-to vegan flavor is the Vegan Cookie Crumble Strawberry Jam. It’s so good!
– Dominique Ansel –
I love love watermelon! Colin and I put it in everything. From smoothies to creating flavor water, watermelon is our go-to fruit. And that leads us to our last stop, Dominique Ansel!
Three words, watermelon soft serve! Served inside a gigantic slice of watermelon, the What-a-Melon sorbet is incredibly refreshing. At first when I took a bite, I couldn’t figure out what else was in the sorbet. The flavor profile is fizzy, reminding me of sparkling lemonade. I found out that the fizzy sensation is made out of sea salt and lime zest seasoning mixed in the watermelon sorbet! And they even add chocolate seeds on the outside of the watermelon!
This dessert is priced on the higher side at $10 a slice, but it’s seriously worth it. The portions are pretty large and it’s enough for two people to share. Dominique Ansel is only serving the What-a-Melon during the summer months, so stop by before September rolls around! It’s only served at the West Village location from 3pm-9pm on Wednesdays-Thursdays, 12pm-10pm on Fridays-Saturdays, and 12pm-9pm on Sundays.
I truly hope you enjoy this ice cream adventure! If you’re in NYC, visiting NYC, or planning a trip to NYC, feel free to bookmark this page. Wishing you a happy vibrant summer filled with joy and yummy eats!
Happy Friday everyone! Another edition of florals today. This time with a romantic vintage-floral print, neck tie, and tiered ruffles. I know it’s summer, but I love my boots! That’s one of the things Colin and I are a lot in common. He’s an all-season boot wearer and so am I. And the beauty of florals is that we can wear it all year round. In spring/summer with sandals and sneakers, in fall/winter under a beautiful coat with boots. Or in spring/summer with boots and fall/winter with boots again =)
Thisfloral dress is actually part of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! Under $90, it’s an airy pretty piece that’s perfect for the office, weekend getaways, brunch, movie nights, and every moment in between.
Have a great weekend and thank you so much for reading!
Overalls? Yup, it’s the comeback kid this season. A trend that comes and goes, they’re now updated with lush textures and interesting cuts. I personally love overalls that have a dress shape. They give more of a grown up feel. Now, the burning question… Can overalls be styled in a chic and fashionable way? Challenge accepted!
I love the nostalgia associated with overalls. They just bring out that inner child in us. Just imagine kid-size overalls. Aww. Now imagine overalls on puppies. Wha… aww. It’s pretty darn cute too. Let’s keep the childlike spirit that makes them so special by adding a pop of color. In this case, a pop of vibrant magenta. For the grown up chic part, I love pairing them with a romantic top. Overalls naturally have a utilitarian feel, so I love adding something soft and feminine to create a harmonious contrast. It gives the look a tough yet soft feel.
When Colin and I were shooting this outfit story, a lady walked by, stopped right next to him, went on her tippy toes (it was really adorable because she’s about my height and Colin is a foot taller than me), looked at him and said, you got the shoes right? The shoes have to be in the picture! She loved the shoes. We chatted for a few minutes and after she left, I thought to myself… Gosh, I love NYC. It’s a place full of people who are not shy, who are unapologetically and authentically themselves, who have strong personalities. I’m just so grateful to call this city home.
I hope you enjoy the styling and thank you so much for reading!
Easy breezy summer dressing! A little black dress, straw bag, and wrap sandals!
These sandals are really the star of this outfit. After searching high and low for summer sandals that are comfortable, minimalistic, and beautiful, I’m so happy I found these! They’re great for travel, and they pair well with practically everything from shorts and a t-shirt to flowy maxi dresses. They have a Santorini vibe mixed with a city feel. Pretty wrap sandals are a summer essential and below are a few of my absolute favorites starting at $10!
I hope you enjoyed the last edition of Sunday Spotlight – Summer Beauty Tips. My goal was to cut down to the essentials and recommend skincare and beauty items that are multipurpose (with no brush or sponge needed!) to help save us time in the morning, to give us a shorter checklist when traveling, and to achieve that natural glowy skin.
Happy summer and stay cool everyone! Thank you so much for reading!
Oh, sunny warm, and sometimes humid, summer days! Nature’s glistening effect (aka, sweat) can be a little challenging on our beauty and make-up routine. Vietnam was really bad. It was extremely hot and humid, which made me appreciate NY summers. And when I was living in LA, it was hot and dry. From the West Coast to the East Coast, from Southeast Asia back to NYC, I learned a few things. And today, I’d love to share these easy low-maintenance tips to achieve a fresh natural look for summer with you.
A few things before we get started… I pared down a lot of items focusing on items that are multipurpose. For example, cream blushes that are also great lip tints, contour creams that also work as soft eyeshadow colors, and sunscreens that also serve as make-up primers and finishing powders. Not only does this save us time in the morning, but it’s also travel friendly, embracing the less-is-more approach.
– Cream Blushes –
First topic, cream blushes! Little goes a long way. No brush or sponge needed, all it takes is a clean finger for a smooth application. These two are my favorites and it gives a natural I-just-ran-a-mile flush cheek color. Creamy and silky, this Kjaer Weis Cream Blush has completely green/clean ingredients. Lightweight and buildable, this Giorgio Armani Neo Nude A-Blush is a water-based liquid color that gives a healthy glow. Both cream blushes are long-lasting and have a satin-matte finish. And they’re really mistake-proof. Just dab a small amount on your cheeks, smile, and blend. Finish by using it also on your lips. Two in one! They’re the perfect lip tints!
– Sunscreens –
Protect, protect, protect! It’s so important to use sunscreen. These two are amazing, and they serve same but different purposes.
My Biossance Squalane + Mineral SPF 45 sunscreen, I use it every morning! If you’ve been with me on my beauty journey, it’ll come to no surprise just how much I love Biossance and their products. I was so excited when their team first told me of the plans to launch a new sunscreen! When it comes to sunscreen, I’m not fond of products that leave a greasy residue or have a strong scent. This sunscreen is lightweight, non-greasy, and leaves no visible white residue upon application. It also doubles as a primer to set up for your makeup routine.
I’ve never been one to reapply my sunscreen midday, even though it’s a highly recommended practice. Since my sunscreen is usually a cream formula, I avoid reapplying because I don’t want to start my make-up routine over again. Drumroll… Supergoop! Invincible Setting Powder SPF 45 comes in powder + brush form, making it easy for application and midday reapplication. It goes smoothly over your skin and makeup! It has a soft matte finish, smoothing over any imperfections and minimizing oil and shine.
– Contour Creams –
Next up, contour creams! This also doubles as soft eyeshadow colors! Again, no brush or sponge needed. Start with a very little amount and blend it with the tips of your fingers to the hallow of your cheeks. Both contour creams are buildable, so start small and add more for a deeper shade. This Armani Neo Nude A-Contour cream helps to effortlessly sculpt and define without leaving obvious traces of makeup application. This Illamasqua Contouring Gel Sculpt is a gel formula contouring stick that is light and has a matte formula that glides on effortlessly and can be layered for a deeper tint.
– Texture Sprays –
Hair, the finishing touch! To achieve a natural textured look, I rely heavily on dry shampoos and textured sprays. These two I can’t live without. I have full size versions at home and also bring travel size versions with me when I’m traveling. I wash my hair three times a week, and use this Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo in between. It has a light clean fragrance, and absorbs and removes oil, sweat, and odor. There’s a visible difference to my hair as soon as I apply the dry shampoo. It gives instant volume and texture!
And for everyday, I use this Oribe Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray. After curling my hair and finger combing it through, I spray this on. It’s a humidity-blocking spray that provides light hold and texture. Actually, a lot of texture! I carry the travel size with me in my bag at all times for a texture and volume refresh throughout the day.
– Mid-Day Refresh –
Two favorites that I use to help refresh the look without moving my makeup throughout the day, my Tatcha Oil Blotting Sheets and Biossance Squalane + Micronutrient Fine Mist! These Tatcha sheets are made out of 100% abaca leaf, which makes them exceptionally soft to the touch but effective when absorbing excess oil. Even better, they do not disturb the makeup that’s already on my face and does not strip the skin of essential moisture.
I’m a huge fan of using mists, no matter the season. It’s a great way to provide a boost of hydration without feeling oily or heavy. This Biossance mist is not only hydrating but also restorative, combating dryness, dullness, and uneven texture. Great for morning, midday and at night, this mist delivers an ultrafine nourishing spray for your skin.
VIETNAM: Travel Journal & Skincare Tips for Hot Humid Places - YouTube
I hope you found these summer beauty tips helpful. In my Vietnam Travel & Beauty Journal video, I actually used the products mentioned above and they were lifesavers! Especially, the SPF, cream blush, and mist.
I hope you enjoy this Sunday Spotlight edition, and as always, thank you so much for reading!
Knits for summer? Yes please! Flutter cap sleeves, a sweetheart neckline, a bodice style design, this light knitted top is so adorable. It’s a beautiful piece for the beach as a cover-up, for the city as a top with high-waisted shorts, for vacation with a linen wrap skirt, and more. Today, I’m keeping the look clean and simple with a beige and black color palette.
A summer classic that is forever timeless. Denim shorts. This season, a higher cut. I’m a huge fan of high waisted anything these days. High waisted shorts, pants, skirts… you name it, I love it. I love how it gives you an illusion of a longer frame.
Hope you’re having a great week so far and thank you so much for reading!
As you probably can see by now, I adore ruffles (as seen here in a choker ruffle blouse, here in a ruffle leather skirt, here with sheer panels and boots, and here in a cut-out ruffle shirt). Not the super girly types, but the ones that have an edge to them. It’s really the mix of soft meets tough that I’m drawn most to. And again today, a double ruffle look. An off-the-shoulder ruffle top with a tiered ruffle mini skirt. The sweet sculptural folds of the shoulder neckline mixed with the sporty vibes of the striped waistband gives this overall look a dose of romance and a dash of drama.
I’m a huge fan of buying pre-loved items. One, you can save a lot of money. And two, it tests your patience so you learn to develop a stronger sense of personal style. Buying pre-loved items mean combing through past season’s styles and being very selective on the items that you really really want. Case in point, this Alexander McQueen skirt. The volume, the tiered ruffles, the contrast edging… it’s beyond gorgeous! It was $1895 (seen here) and went on sale for $750 (seen here). I kept on tracking it and found it for $95 pre-loved (seen here). Buying pre-loved clothes and accessories can be quite scary (I go for sites and places that have return policies), but once you’re comfortable, it’s a great place to save and collect true gems. Just in case you’re interested, I did a full blog post talking about navigating the pre-loved world here.
Happy Monday everyone and hope you had a great weekend! Thank you so much for reading!
Summer in the city! No matter how hot or humid, I’m just so happy to feel the warmth and sunshine. I think I’m still traumatized from the long cold winter we had, so any sun and heat is a much welcomed experience. Long warm nights, watching plays at the park (The High Line), seeing a movie under the stars (Bryant Park film series), summer is all about cheer and joy.
This also reflects in a fashion sense. Beautiful florals, vibrant colors, reviving old trends, reinterpreting archeological treasures, this season’s trends are a combination of sweet nostalgia mixed with modern twists. I’ve rounded up my top 10 favorite summer fashion trends and styles: vintage florals, belt bags, straight jeans, vibrant shoes, coin necklaces, tulle texture, polka dots patterns, saturated hues, garden prints, and Cinderella heels. The first five are listed here and the last five are in the video.
1. Vintage Florals
As the infamous Miranda Priestly once said, florals for spring/summer aren’t exactly groundbreaking, but this season’s trend feels more akin to a refresh than a rerun. With an air of light nostalgia, the vintage-inspired blooms are embracing wallpaper patterns, delicate prints, and playful tones. I especially love wearing vintage-inspired floral dresses with a pair of heels. For days where a lot of walking is involved, I love pairing them with sneakers. A floral mini dress + casual sneakers = a chic city look! Below are a few of my favorites. Couple them with nude heels, gladiator sandals, or casual sneakers!
2. Belt Bags
A recent fashion/style accessory trend that experienced a massive resurgence, accompanied by strong expressions of “love” and “hate” from all, was the belt bag. It’s strange to imagine that the “fanny pack” would be considered as a high fashion accessory, but it was a clear runway favorite from Prada to Gucci. I have to admit that it took me some time to get on board with this trend. For one, I wasn’t sure whether to call it a fanny pack, belt bag, or arm rest (as seen here). But fashion is all about stepping outside your comfort zone, so I tried it. And… I kinda like it. Like, not love. However, I do love the versatility. It can be worn around the waist, through the belt loops, slung across the shoulders, and styled as a clutch by removing the belt.
3. Straight Jeans
While skinny jeans are a wardrobe classic and a timeless silhouette perfect for any occasion, a different denim style is catching the fashion industry’s attention. The straight leg jeans trend is a relaxed denim style with a retro feel. I consider them an elegant version of the boyfriend jeans. Unlike boyfriend jeans where they sit lower on the waist, I like the look of straight jeans with a high-waisted cut. Moreover, I like them cropped. It’s a great way to elongate our frame and to highlight our favorite pair of shoes!
4. Vibrant Shoes
Oh so beautiful! Vibrant hues are taking over, from sunny yellows to 80’s-esque teal and fuchsias. It’s all about a bold color pop for footwear this summer. A bright addition to an everyday casual outfit or an eye-catching detail for a dressier look, colored shoes can easily be styled for all occasions. Darling lilac purples, bold fiery reds, happy sunshine yellows… pair them with straight jeans (as seen here) for a weekend look or with a little black dress for a night out!
5. Coin Necklaces
Digging from our past, this summer season is about reinterpreting archeological treasures. Antique gold coins and medallions reimagined, and styled with delicate long chains and layered with different lengths and shapes.
Worn solo or layered, coin necklaces exude an ancient vibe that also feels current. It’s eye-catching, mysterious, and edgy all in one. Coin necklaces also serves as a great base for layering, especially on those more-is-more accessory days. I love starting at the highest point with a thin or chain choker, and working down with coin necklaces at different lengths and sizes. This jewelry look is beautiful when paired with low cut tees or shirts and deep neckline dresses.

As always, thank you so much for reading and watching! I hope this trends report and the styling suggestions are helpful. Happy summer and have a great week ahead!
Happy Friday everyone! A comfy oversized silk blouse with a mix of fall vibes today.
Coin necklaces layered with delicate necklaces are a huge hit this season. Personally, I love them! They exclude a feel of forever summer, of happiness and joy, and of warmth and sun. And they’re so much fun! You can layer a big coin piece with a small coin necklace or a coin choker with a long locket. Basically mixing and matching different lengths and shapes till you find your favorite combination. Below are a few that you might enjoy and all of them are under $70!
Summer on top and a dash of fall on the bottom. Spring, summer, autumn, winter… regardless of the season I always have a soft spot for boots! It’s probably too hot to think about boots right now, but this is actually a good season to buy because most of them are on sale. Contemporary to designer brands have great pairs on sale up to 80% off. From classic styles to fun trendy pairs (I just ordered the silver glitter ones!), below are a few of my favorites.
Since the weather is nice and warm, I’ll do a sandals story soon! But for now, bookmark the boots that you like and keep an eye on them just in case they get marked down even more.
Have a great weekend and thank you so much for reading!
