Te Papa has some fun filled entertainment for kids that combines learning, fun and gaming!

Te Papa and the Earthquake commission have developed a Minecraft computer game called ShakerMod, which is the world’s first Minecraft Mod that lets you experiment with realistic earthquakes in Minecraft that enables children to develop skills on how to play minecraft; stop an evil corporation from using the destructive power of earthquakes to take over the world; explore the effects of earthquakes and monsters and learn how to keep your home safe.

The game can be played at Te Papa as part of its earthquake education programme, Earthquake Encounters, or downloaded to play at home or at school (users need to have a license for the Minecraft game).

Come along to our free movie event on Thursday 16th May at Tawa Library. This month we have a choice of two movies and two times. You can choose either  4pm or 6pm.

At 4pm everybody’s favourite bear is happily settled into his new home at Windsor Gardens, and he’s even found the perfect present to send back to his aunt for her birthday. But then the present is stolen before he can even buy it!
How can he set everything to rights?

At 6pm a happy, hockey-loving 11 year old Midwestern girl, is uprooted from everything and everyone she’s ever known and moved to San Francisco. Overwhelmed by change, her emotions become real-life characters to help her cope with the move. Will her emotions be able to find common ground and eventually help her accept the big move.

These films are rated PG.

Songs for Bubbas by Anika Moa.

Move over, The Wiggles! There’s a new (solo) performer, cheeky and beautiful Kiwi songwriter, Anika Moa returns with her albums for children: Songs for Bubbas One and Two. Filled with songs about love, laughter and… animal noises that will keep children… and parents entertained for hours on end!

The albums are half Te Reo Maori, half English. These songs will be enjoyed in every primary school and kindy around the country for years to come.

This week is New Zealand Sign Language week. It is a good chance for us to learn what life is like for those people who have hearing loss and to help raise awareness for the New Zealand Deaf Community.

New Zealand Sign Language is one of our official languages and is unique to New Zealand. It includes signs for Maori terminology and concepts that you will not find in the sign language of other countries. Sign languages are different all over the world and even in New Zealand people in Wellington may sign slightly differently to people in Christchurch.

One in six New Zealanders have some form of hearing loss and there are thousands of New Zealanders that use NZSL everyday.

Head on over to the Deaf Aotearoa website where there are some great resources and you can check out events happening in your area.

The library also has books on learning NZSL plus books about children who have hearing loss and what life is like for them.

The countdown begins to the release of the live action film, The Lion King!

Released in theatres on July 18th and 25 years since the release of the original and animated film. Just in time for the school holidays!

A new trailer has been released and overall, it is amazing!

You will get to see all the beloved characters of the film, including Mufusa, Rafiki, Scar and Simba, (as a baby, child -EEEKK! Prepare for an overload of cuteness- and an adult), and of course, lovable duo: Timon and Pumbaa!

It shows promise that this film will be even better than the original, as well as the most anticipated movie of the year.

The Lion King boasts an all-star cast featuring Beyoncé as Nala, Donald Glover  as Simba, Billy Eichner as Timon, Seth Rogan as Pumbaa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar and James Earl Jones returning to his role as Mufasa.
