More yellow than red means green: supply easily outstrips demand

As of this week, we are proud to announce, the Watermill is becoming self-sufficient in electricity. We have just commissioned our new photovoltaic energy generation system and we are now happy to say that overall, thanks to the power of the sun, we are producing much more electricity than we are using.

Our sincere thanks to the architect Stefano Santini and his team, and our brilliant builders Nico and Danielle, who aesthetically incorporated the photovoltaic panels in our ancient roofs.

As well as helping to save the planet, our solar powered electricity will help to make our guests even more comfortable. We have already made a start on installing air-conditioning units in the Watermill rooms. There is now air conditioning in the studio and in the communal dining room (and in our industrial kitchen, to keep our cooks cool and calm as they prepare your delicious meals). We also now have units in the Lippi Suite and in the Brunelleschi and Donatello bedrooms. We will be working again in October to complete the whole system, so that by the beginning of the 2020 season we should have air-conditioning everywhere, all powered by the sun.

In the first couple of days of operation, as you can see from the picture at the top, we used some 90 kWh of electricity, half of which we generated ourselves and half of which we had to buy from the electricity company. But we also generated more than 100 kWh of extra electricity, which we fed back into the national grid, and for which we will be paid. (Of course, electricity companies pay less for the electricity we supply them than they charge for the electricity they supply us, but even so we think will make more money than we pay, as well as helping to save the planet. On today’s reckoning, we’ve already avoided the production of nearly 140 kg of CO2. A drop in the ocean, it’s true, but you have to start somewhere…)

Here’s a green snapshot of our photovoltaic production at the height of a sunny Tuscan afternoon:

Along with our moves to cut down on the use of plastic, notably with our reusable vacuum flasks and our delivery system for cool natural and fizzy water, we are working hard on the “greening” of the Watermill. Come and enjoy the fruits of our labours yourself!

Our good friend and painting tutor Sandra Strohschein has just sent us this intriguing little painting. It is an experiment, she says, in trying to depict a sense of place in less than 30 strokes of the brush.

What a good idea! It concentrates the mind on trying to seek out the essentials in any picture. Sandra says: “I found this experiment really intriguing and I’m thinking of doing it as a lesson for my students at the Watermill. It could be like a good game of golf: the fewest strokes wins.”

So, 30 strokes is not some harsh historical military punishment, but rather a release: another way to liberate your painting skills. Sandra’s enthusiasm for teaching, and for thinking of new ideas to make her weeks at the Watermill even more fun, mean that her courses will continue to be inspiring and help our guests to enjoy their painting even more.

Today, this week’s painting group with Sandra goes off to the castle and village of Verrucola. Here is one of our favourite paintings of the location, which hangs on the sitting room wall at the Watermill. We like it even though it is a bit of a cheat! It was a lovely sunny day with Sandra painted it, but to make it more dramatic she invented a rainy day so she could put in the dynamic umbrellas!

Painting in Verrucola, our Monday location. It wasn’t raining, Sandra made it up!

After painting in the morning, we will enjoy lunch at the Locanda al castello, a proper Italian trattoria. Here is the starter: spaghetti al pomodoro. Simply delicious!

Why not come and join us next year? We are already taking reservations for Sandra’s 2020 weeks here. She will be with us for two special watercolour courses, from 30 May-6 June 2020 and 6-13 June 2020. And the good news is that if you book now you can enjoy these inspiring courses at 2019 prices. You can see a preview of Sandra’s, and our other 2020 courses, by clicking here.

Sandra Strohschein from Michigan, USA, has achieved an extraordinary mastery of her medium, transparent watercolours. She works in a fast, loose impressionistic style, but above all, she produces passionate, emotionally charged paintings, full of energy. Her paintings above were made during recent visits to the watermill.

As for her teaching, people frequently tell her about how much fun they have on her workshops and how nobody ever wants them to end.

As a painting guest at the Watermill said last year: “It was although everything was magically suspended for a week and all I had to do was to show up for one delightful painting session after another with Sandra.”

We have just started Sandra Strohschein’s second week with us here this year. What is remarkable is that eight of our guests have been on a Watermill creative course before, several of them more than once. In fact, we reckon the total number of return visits by members of this group are no fewer than 20! We must be doing something right. We are looking forward to another sun-filled, fun-filled, inspirational week

Above is a lovely picture by Sandra of a bright yellow awning in the main square in the medieval walled town of Fivizzano, where we go to paint on market day. We’ll all be painting there again this Tuesday.

Why not come and join us next year: we are already taking reservations for Sandra’s 2020 weeks here. She will be with us for two special watercolour courses, from 30 May-6 June 2020 and 6-13 June 2020. And the good news is that if you book now you can enjoy these inspiring courses at 2019 prices. We have had a tremendous watercolour painting week with Sandra Strohschein, sadly coming to an end today. Yesterday afternoon, as usual, Sandra gave our painting guests a little fun exercise to help them concentrate on basic shapes, light and shadow. Each student has a piece of paper divided into eight parts and each of them suggests a subject to paint in each section of the paper.  Then, they are given five minutes to paint each subject. Sandra says: “There is little time to overthink or dilly-dally.   It is a great exercise to learn to see only what is absolutely needed to suggest your subject.   The spontaneous results never fail to amaze the participants.”  Above is the expert’s ‘take’ on the exercise: Sandra’s rapid eight paintings of everyday objects in the mill courtyard.

Friday evening also usually sees an impromptu exhibition in the Watermill studio, where we enjoy a glass or two of prosecco while we admire our painting guests’ work. Two pieces particularly struck me: Tamara Zakon’s amazingly impressive sketch of the cloisters of the Convento del Carmine, a privately owned Monastery where we go to paint on Thursday. The perspective of those vaults is incredibly difficult to capture, and Tamara has done an amazing job.

And we also enjoyed Donna Davis’s picture of the glass rose bowl which sits in the middle of our grand new imposing dining table in the Watermill courtyard dining room:

All in all, a very friendly and inspiring week — and our thanks not only to Sandra for her tireless  and enthusuatic tuition, but also to our guests whose bonhomie and friendliness made the our time together so special.

We are looking forward today to Sandra’s second week here this year, again fully booked. No fewer than seven of our dozen guests have been on a Watermill painting course here before, so as well as making new friends we will be meeting old ones. Why not come and join us next year: we are already taking reservations for Sandra’s 2020 weeks here. In today’s extract from her pictorial journal, Sandra Strohschein shares with us a typical Italian street scene, with the man enjoying a leisurely passeggiata on his bicycle. Yesterday our guests enjoyed a quiet day painting ina nearby convent, a peaceful place to be after their exertions on their excursion on Wednesday.

The Convento del Carmine, yesterday’s painting venue.

Today they are off to a hilltop village to capture with their brushes the towering Apuan Alps, the marble mountains of Carrara, hovering in the background. Then it’s a special lunch in a gourmet restaurant. Another tough week in paradise!

Our friend and Watermill painting tutor Sandra Strohschein is keeping a daily pictorial record of her time with us and we thought it would be lovely to share it with you, to give you some idea of what we paint and the places we see during a Watermill painting week. Today’s painting is of a few of the poppies which are looking magnificent in the Watermill gardens (and on the roadside verges all around us.)  Our guests were out on their Wednesday excursion, some going to the quintessential walled Italian town of  Lucca and others to the incomparable fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, while Sandra enjoyed her ‘tutor’s day off’ at the Watermill. Here are some more poppies blooming in the Watermill walled garden.

Our friend and Watermill painting tutor Sandra Strohschein is keeping a daily pictorial record of her time with us and we thought it would be lovely to share it with you, to give you some idea of what we paint and the places we see during a Watermill painting week. Today’s painting is of the red house in the main square in Fivizzano, where our group of painters went to sketch market day yesterday. At the base of the house is the Ricci gelateria where they enjoyed fresh-baked panini filled with ham and cheese, and two delicious scoops each of home-made ice cream.

You will note that the sun is shining brightly. Some years ago, Sandra painted a beautiful picture of the red house during market day in the rain. That is it below. It hangs in pride of place, along with other superb paintings by our tutors, in the Watermill sitting room, to be enjoyed with after-dinner coffee and a selection of digestivi, Italian liqueurs. La vita é bella!

This is Debbie Abrahams’ Tuscan Runner, the project for our inspiring knitting week at the Watermill. It was a perfect evening yesterday as we admired the work of our knitting guests. Our thanks to them for their support and to Debbie as an expert and enthusiastic tutor.

Our thanks too, to Judy Devlin, for this lovely photograph of the Watermill garden. The roses are now in full bloom, just waiting for our new group, painters under the tutelage of Sandra Strohschein, arriving to capture the beauty of our gardens and the unspoiled surrounding countryside all, we hope, basking under the Tuscan sun.

And the blooming roses are waiting for the painters, too:

We’d love you to come and see everything for yourself, joining us in our idyllic setting in unspoiled rural Tuscany: Secluded gardens, sun-drenched terraces, a cool vine verandah, a gurgling river, beautifully restored historic buildings … bright airy bedrooms with new en suite bathrooms, and lovely views over the river, the gardens or the mountains … delicious food prepared from fresh local ingredients…

Just some of the delights of the Watermill. We specialise in relaxing, inspiring and fun-filled painting, creative writing and Italian language weeks, with internationally renowned tutors. “The most wonderful week, in a most beautiful and unique setting. One of the best holidays I have experienced.”
