From the Opening Night to the final mouthful, UFF welcomed 15,000 foodies who enjoyed an estimated 24,000 plates of food from 26-28 April.

In its fifth year, the record audience numbers – a 25% increase on last year’s attendance – confirm its position as Southeast Asia’s leading culinary event. With 70% of Festival goers traveling to Ubud specifically for UFF, it once again provided a significant injection to the local economy.

“This year’s theme Spice Up the World was brought to life in countless delicious ways across the Festival’s three days,” commented Founder & Director Janet DeNeefe. “From the tantalizing aroma of sambal at the Kitchen Stage, to the incredible array of regional dishes at Teater Kuliner, to the compelling conversations at the Food for Thought stage, UFF 2019 really did spice up the world with Indonesian cuisine.”

For the second consecutive year, UFF was supported by its Presenting Partner, ABC. Dhiren Amin, Director of Marketing and R&D, Kraft-Heinz Southeast Asia, commented, “We are extremely delighted to have been part of the Ubud Food Festival for the second year in a row. A huge thank you to the teams who have been part of this incredible journey.

“Indeed, with our shared values of wanting to bring Indonesian food to the forefront, and a meeting of minds to excite consumers with the spiciest and most flavorful of dishes, we are confident that this partnership will continue to go from strength to strength in the years to come. Looking forward to an even bigger and better festival next year!”

The Official Press Call at Amandari Ubud ignited the Festival’s three-day conversation about the most effective ways to make Indonesian food go global. At the Festival Hub and across Ubud’s top-rated venues, over 100 chefs, farmers, food writers and environmental activists from across Indonesia and 21 other countries plated up thousands of diverse dishes, and delved deeper into Indonesia’s culinary landscape.

“I may have lost my sight, but now the world can see what I have done for Indonesian culinary culture.”

Culinary expert Murdijati Gardjito, 77, was the recipient of the 2019 UFF Lifetime Achievement Award. Losing her eyesight in 2015 did not stop her from pursuing her true passion: researching and writing books on Indonesian food. After receiving the award she commented, “I may have lost my sight, but now the world can see what I have done for Indonesian culinary culture.”

In the spirit of uniting culinary communities from across the archipelago, this year’s UFF featured representatives of the Aceh Culinary Festival (4-6 July 2019), and community-based tourism initiative Cengkeh Afo & Gamala Spices from Ternate, North Maluku.

Kris Syamsudin, Founder of the latter, commented, “We treasure the sense of community when the group of mothers cooks together using bamboo in the outdoor kitchen surrounded by spice plants, just as we treasure the sense of community created by Ubud Food Festival.”

From food waste to single-use packaging, minimizing all types of waste was a central pillar of the Festival. UFF collaborated with six local organizations to manage each type, while seven events explored various waste management solutions. As prominent Australian journalist and former Indonesia correspondent Jewel Topsfield tweeted, “Great to see waste is a strong theme of Ubud Food Festival.”

“This year’s Festival proved we are now a major player in Indonesia’s food scene, uniting culinary communities from Aceh to Ternate,” commented DeNeefe. “Thank you so much to all who attended, and to everyone who helped bring the fifth UFF to life. I hope to see you again from 17-19 April next year!”

UFF returns from 17-19 April, 2020. For all the updates, stay tuned to our Instagram and Facebook, and subscribe to the UFF enews.

We recently shared this list of seven ways you can help reduce waste at Ubud Food Festival 2019 Presented by ABC. Now we want to let you know about the organizations that are supporting our waste management initiatives. If you see them at the Festival be sure to give them a smile, and ask them about their crucial contribution to waste reduction across the island.

Griya Luhu – Supervision & Information

Initiated by young Balinese, Griya Luhu is a movement contributing to resolving the issue of waste on the island. The movement originated from the idea that waste produced by the community has a high value if it is properly sorted and processed. Griya Luhu wants to inspire change that is beneficial to people’s lives and the environment. Its members believe that Bali will be trash free for the next generation! Griya Luhu members will be helping out at the sorting stations to ensure waste is sorted correctly.

Trash Hero Indonesia – Supervision & Information

The bright yellow shirts of Trash Hero Indonesia volunteers are now a familiar sight across the island, as they conduct regular clean ups at beaches and other areas. At the Festival, members of Trash Hero Bali will be helping with our waste management systems. The Chairperson of Trash Hero Indonesia, Pak Wayan Aksara, will also be part of the Food for Thought session Turning the Tide on Plastic Waste.

Eco Bali – Plastic & Non-Organic

ecoBali was established in 2006 in response to the urgency of waste management problems in Bali. Their vision is to enable everyone to move towards a zero waste lifestyle. They promote responsible waste management, and create green knowledge and eco products for achieving zero waste.

Rumah Kompos Padangtegal – Organic

Padangtegal is one of Ubud’s villages, and is home to the famous Monkey Forest. Rumah Kompos Padangtegal aims to make the area clean and green, and act as a pilot village for waste management. The organization promotes the new perspective that waste is a resource, and provides various waste treatment facilities for the benefit of residents and the public. They also provide education to residents about various waste management methods.

Love Life Studio – Glass

At Love Life Studio, artist Budi Boleng gives used glass a second life by upcycling it into vases, drinking glasses, water bottles, candle holders, lamps and jewelry. All used glass from the Festival will be given to Budi as raw material for his creative, eco-conscious initiative.

Bhumi Pertiwi – Banners

Bhumi Pertiwi is a creative, eco-conscious group transforming used banners into stylish bags. They recently made bags from election banners, and after the Festival they’ll create bags of various sizes from all our colorful Festival x-banners, hanging banners, and more. As Bali embraces the plastic bag ban, we’re sure to see more of Bhumi Pertiwi’s bags across the island!

Positive Impact Forever – Plastic

Positive Impact Forever is an organization helping businesses to move towards zero waste to landfill through impact assessments and permaculture gardens. Its Founder, Piet van Zyl, is presenting one of the Quick Bites session at the Food for Thought stage, and is also part of the Turning the Tide on Plastic Waste panel. Positive Impact Forever will also be assisting with processing plastic waste at the Festival.

Make sure you read our list of seven ways you can reduce waste at UFF19. We hope to see you at our waste reduction-themed events, and please remember, it takes all of us to help change behavior.

Ubud Food Festival 2019 Presented by ABC is committed to reducing all forms of waste produced at the event. From organic waste leftover from cooking demos at the Kitchen Stage and Teater Kuliner, to encouraging the 70+ vendors at Taman Kuliner to avoid single-use packaging, the Festival is playing its part in responsible waste management. But all Festival goers need to play their part too, so here are seven ways you can reduce waste at UFF19.

Bring your own eating utensils (you can wash them at the Cleaning Stations)

Bringing our own water bottle when we leave the house is now regular behavior for many of us, so it shouldn’t be too hard to make the step to bringing our own eating utensils too. For those who’ve brought their own container, plate or cutlery, you can wash them at one of two Cleaning Stations at Taman Kuliner – just look for the signs.

Sort your own waste.

All waste produced at the Festival will be sorted into food waste, organic waste, non-organic waste, glass, and plastic. There will be ten Sorting Stations at Taman Kuliner, so when you’ve finished eating, please bring your waste to a Sorting Station and sort it according to these categories. A member of our crew will be there to assist you.

Help the Festival team keep Taman Kuliner clean.

If you see a piece of rubbish on the ground, please help our Festival team by bringing it to a Sorting Station. If every Festival goer picked up just a few pieces, it would make a big difference.

Refill your water bottle at the AQUA Refill Station.

For a small donation to our partner charity, you can refill your bottle at the AQUA Refill Station located at the Lounge Area in Taman Kuliner. Eating your way across the archipelago and then dancing the night away is thirsty work, so remember to stay hydrated!

Ask vendors about their waste management strategies.

Many Taman Kuliner vendors will have their their own waste management strategies, such as using biodegradable food packaging, selling reusable eating utensils, or offering discounts to those who bring their own utensils. If you buy food from a stall you think is doing a great job at waste management, tell your friends and the Festival team on social media by using the hashtag #gogreenUFF19.

Don’t smoke in covered areas and always use the ashtrays provided.

If you’re a smoker, when you’ve finished your cigarette, please don’t drop it on the ground! Look for one of the many ashtrays provided.

Attend one of the waste management-themed events.

We will share more information about our other waste reduction initiatives soon. If you have questions about any of these initiatives, please get in touch with our team.

These are just some of the Indonesian cuisines you can explore at Ubud Food Festival 2019 Presented by ABC. For those craving a culinary adventure across the archipelago, we’ve compiled your ultimate Festival schedule.

Teater Kuliner: Cooking in Bamboo
13:00-14:00

Combining family recipes passed down through generations with high-quality local produce, Ayu Gayatri Kresna is passionate about preserving North Balinese cuisine and introducing it to the world. Food Tour: Gianyar Market’s Best Bites
16:30-19:30

For adventurous foodies, there are few greater pleasures than scouring sizzling night markets for the tastiest local specialties. Local culinary guide Pak Puriana will wander with you through the region’s biggest night market, Pasar Gianyar, leading you straight to all the best bites.

Special Event: Amandari’s 30th Anniversary
19:00-22:30

Saturday, 27 April

Food Tour: Culinary Jalan-Jalan
06:00-09:00

Join our intrepid food guides on a walking tour to the home of Ubud’s famed suckling pig, Ibu Oka’s. After kopi Bali, meet Pak Rimpin, the master of bebek betutu (spiced braised duck), and Pak Sanur, the don of betutu ayam (spiced braised chicken). Polish it off with a Balinese breakfast of champions at Casa Luna.

Teater Kuliner: Fresh from the Future Farmers
10:00-11:00

Chef I Ketut Buda is a farmer who goes back to nature for cooking, which is why he created Future Farmers, a collaborative organic farm in East Bali. With ingredients grown on his farm, he’ll share three dishes inspired by rural Balinese home cooking: ayam bakar bumbu kecombrang, sambal goreng, and urap kejelongkot.

Food for Thought: Putting Indonesia on the World Food Map
14:00-15:00

A new generation of Indonesian chefs is working hard to put Indonesian cuisine and its culinary scene on the world food map. From celebrating regional recipes in Bali to contemporary eats in the capital, these savvy young chefs will share their plans, challenges, and hopes for the future of makanan Indonesia.

Kitchen Stage: Bali’s Culinary Star
17:00-18:00

Named Chef of the Year at Bali’s Best Eats 2018, Wayan Kresna Yasa is one of the island’s brightest culinary stars. For those who adore seafood plush with zingy, piquant flavors, this demo is essential. Chef Wayan will prepare Pindang Kecombrang: braised pompano with spicy chilli and torch ginger flower sauce.

Special Event: Molecular Magic
16:30-21:30

Adhitia Julisiandi is Chef de Cuisine of celebrated contemporary Indonesian restaurant, 1945. In collaboration with bridges’ Chef Wayan Sukarta, he’ll share his molecular gastronomy flair and passion for local produce over six courses in the alluring atmosphere of bridges. This is Indonesian fine dining at its most innovative, elegant and surprising.

Sunday, 28 April

Food Tour: Keliki Tofu Makers
10:00-12:00

Keliki village is renowned for its unique style of painting. However, not many know this hilly village north of Ubud also produces traditional tofu. Join our short tour to learn about the process, then stop by the Keliki Painting School. Don’t forget to support the tofu makers by taking home a bag of fresh tofu!

Kitchen Stage: Gohu Ikan – Indonesia’s Ceviche
12:30-13:30

It seems in the cuisines of almost all seafaring nations there is at least one raw fish dish (did you try Jordy Navarra’s kinilaw yesterday?). A familiar face on Asian Food Channel, Chef Rinrin Marinka will share gohu ikan, a zingy mix of fresh raw fish, lime juice and chilli from North Maluku.

Teater Kuliner: Aceh’s Legendary Kopi Sareng
14:30-15:30

The coffee houses of Aceh are the stuff of legend, and kupi sareng, the sweet dark brew strained from a height, is a major part of Aceh’s culinary legacy. As is martabak mesir, its signature thin and crispy martabak. Join the Aceh Culinary Festival team for a tasty tour of this spice-rich region.

Food for Thought: Sekala Niskala in the Kitchen
15:30-16:30

In traditional Balinese homes the kitchen is separate from the main house, and if not, it must be at a higher level. For Balinese the kitchen is sacred, and dishes produced within are imbued with spiritualism. From the fundamental spice blends to communal cooking, follow our culinary guides through the spiritual side of Balinese food.

Special Event: Taste the Archipelago at the World’s Best Hotel
19:00-22:00
Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan was voted World’s Best Hotel by Travel + Leisure last year, so it’s a fitting venue for Ragil Imam Wibowo, named Chef of the Year at Jakarta’s Best Eats 2018. Along with Four Seasons’ chefs he’ll create six courses representing the major islands of the archipelago.

Don’t forget, all Teater Kuliner and Food for Thought sessions are absolutely free! Special Events and Food Tours tickets can be purchased from the individual event pages. The best way to experience the Kitchen Stage is with a FoodLover Pass. Snap yours up now.

Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 announced in Macao last night stamped the seal of approval on Ubud Food Festival 2019 Presented by ABC (UFF) as Asia’s leading culinary event. From 26-28 April, a host of chefs on this year’s list – the region’s premier restaurant awards – will collaborate for one-off special events, demonstrate signature dishes at the Kitchen Stage, and participate in in-depth discussions at the Food for Thought stage. The 2019 list is also replete with previous UFF restaurants, cementing the Festival’s position as Asia’s leading food festival.

At #18 is il Ristorante Luca Fantin in Tokyo. At this year’s UFF Chef Luca Fantin will collaborate with Nic Vanderbeeken who leads the kitchens at The Viceroy’s Apéritif for eight courses of modern Mediterranean masterpieces on 27 April. Earlier that day Fantin will demonstrate risotto carnaroli cooked in parmesan water at the Kitchen Stage.

At #20 is Le Du in Bangkok. Chef Thitid Tassanakajohn, known as Ton, will bring his progressive Thai dishes rooted in tradition to the pre-UFF Special Event at Alila Seminyak’s Seasalt on 24 April. At #42 is Indonesia’s only list entrant, Ubud’s hometown heroes Locavore, which also received the Sustainable Restaurant Award for promoting sustainable practices in all its facets. He’ll also share his experiences at The Dark Side and Stories from Behind the Pass discussions.
