Olympus has just announced the TG6. It will start shipping out on June 28th.The earlier TG5 is the most popular snorkeling camera. So what is new with the TG6? Our partner Backscatter has a good video that breaks down the changes. The camera physically looks the same, as is the housing. There have been no image quality changes in terms of image sensor or lens. The only physical change is a new LCD screen with over twice the resolution of the TG5, for much sharper details.
There have been a lot of changes to setting options, including some new underwater white balance quick settings for different depths. If you shoot macro, and you are in Aperture Mode you can now use the quick menu to set to macro focus modes, without turning the dial to microscope mode. And there is a way to control aperture that allows for more depth of field in macro mode. Also you can set the camera to 4K and 1080P with the quick menu, without needing to go to movie mode, even in macro mode. There is a new minimum shutter speed option.
Is this camera a game changer for a snorkeler? If you shoot a lot of macro, it is probably worth upgrading from a TG5. And if we were buying new we would certainly buy the TG6.
