Team Illinois is proud to announce that goaltender Lena Flores has committed to play NCAA Division III hockey for Coach David Turco at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York next fall! The Valiants compete in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHA). They face of regularly against Elmira, William Smith, Nazareth, Utica, Stevenson, among others.
The team hosts its home games at Playland, made famous for the
site of the carnival in the movie Big starting
Tom Hanks, that is located about 10 minutes off campus.
Lena is planning to study physical therapy and Manhattanville
became her top choice because of the nice mix of academics and athletics
offered by the University, as well as the location of the school.
“Manhattanville’s pre-health program is great and offers me a
solid path to becoming a physical therapist,” explained Lena. “The school
is also located near New York city, which offers me a ton of opportunities for
internships and jobs. The hockey team is
strong and growing and I am excited to be a part of helping the program
continue to succeed.”
Lena played for Team Illinois when she was a U14, moved to the Chicago
Fury for one year of U16 and then returned to Team Illinois to play three years
at the U19 level. She also played all four years of high school hockey with the
Fenwick Girls Hockey Team where she was named to the All State Team and the
Chicago Blackhawk Alumni All Star team during her junior and senior years.
“I also love the school’s beautiful campus and the head coach, as
he is engaging and his passion for the team truly shines through” added Lena.
“I am excited to become a Valiant and look forward to taking the next
step in my hockey and academic careers.”
“Lena is an exceptional goalie and even better teammate. She
always shows up ready to work hard and makes everyone around her better,” noted
Cara Mendelson, Team Illinois U19 Head Coach. “It has been a pleasure coaching
her this season and I know she will thrive at the next level. Manhattanville is
lucky to have her!”
She is thankful for the support her family has offered over the
years. “My parents have had a very
positive impact on my hockey career,” noted Lena. “They come to all of my
games, support me throughout the season, and help me through slumps. My Dad was
the one that got me into hockey and I honestly do not know what I am going to
do next year when I can’t have him behind my net at all games.”
