Dr Sophie Chan, MBBS Hons 1, FRACP, MMed, PhD, is an experienced endocrinologist who is passionate about helping patients manage diabetes and other endocrine problems.

She offers a personalised and comprehensive approach that is based on the best scientific evidence. Patients find her approachable, professional and an excellent communicator. Sophie has two children, is a qualified yoga teacher and is committed to promoting healthy eating for children and adults. She is fluent in Cantonese.

Sophie was born in Hong Kong and educated in Sydney. She graduated from Medicine with First Class Honours (University of Sydney) and achieved First Place in Final Year Medicine.

During her Internship and residency at Concord Hospital, Sophie was awarded the prize for “Most Valuable Intern of the Year”. She undertook basic and advanced training in Endocrinology at Royal North Shore Hospital and is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP). Sophie was awarded a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) from the University of Sydney for her research in the field of growth factors, fat cells and diabetes at the Kolling Institute of Medical Research at Royal North Shore Hospital. She was awarded a Masters of Medicine in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Sydney.

Sophie has published scientific papers in international medical journals such as Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Thyroid and American Journal of Physiology – Endocrinology and Metabolism and Diabetologia.

Belinda Elwin is the Head of Nutrition and Dietetics Department at War Memorial Hospital. Her qualifications include Bach. Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Newcastle and Accredited Practising Dietitian Membership from the Dietitians Association of Australia. Belinda is a fully Accredited Practicing Dietitian and Nutritionist who has experience working with both children and adults. Dr Michael Barakate graduated from Medicine (UNSW) in 1996 and completed his Master of Surgery degree (U.Syd) in 2003. His surgical training includes dual fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in General Surgery and Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr Barakate reviews and treats patients with thyroid and parathyroid conditions when surgery is needed. The types of conditions he manages include thyroid nodules and lumps, thyroiditis and Graves’ Disease, multinodular goitre, atypical thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. We also see patients for the management of hyperparathyroidism and parathyroid adenoma.

After a series of teaching hospital rotations (Westmead, Prince of Wales, Liverpool, Westmead / Sydney Children’s) in the NSW Otolaryngology training scheme, including 12 months in the Oxford University Hospitals, UK, he then embarked on fellowship training in the University of Michigan USA focusing on oncological surgery. Dr Barakate has an active interest in teaching and research in ENT Head and Neck, being involved in several peer reviewed publications and abstracts.

A faculty member of the University of Notre Dame Australia, School of Medicine, Dr Barakate has expertise and experience in the surgical management of diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Dr Tang Wong graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (honours) from the University of NSW in 2003 and undertook training in endocrinology at the Concord Repatriation, Prince of Wales and Bankstown-Lidcombe hospitals. He is currently appointed as an Endocrinologist at both Prince of Wales and Bankstown-Lidcombe hospital.

Dr Wong is a dedicated teacher and holds an appointment as a conjoint lecturer at UNSW. He is also co-supervisor of advanced training in Endocrinology. He has published a chapter in an endocrinology text book in cooperation with the US endocrine society and has also published in a number of peer reviewed journals. He currently sits on the editorial board of the Diabetes Management Journal. While he has a passion for all things in general endocrinology (type 1 and 2 diabetes, thyroid, bone, pituitary, adrenal and PCOS). He has a particular interest in diabetes in pregnancy, which is his area of active research. ​

In 2011, he was awarded the Emerging investigator (researcher) award and subsequently in 2013 the best poster award by the Australian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society. He is a member of the Endocrine society of Australia, the Australian Diabetes Society, the Australian Diabetes in Pregnancy society and the US endocrine society. Dr Angela Sheu graduated with a combined Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (Honours) and Bachelor of Science (Medicine) Honours from the University of New South Wales, and completed Endocrinology training at St George, Prince of Wales and St Vincent’s hospitals. She is currently undertaking a PhD at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, in collaboration with St Vincent’s and Prince of Wales Hospitals.

Her research focuses on osteoporosis and diabetes mellitus, although she is interested in all aspects of endocrinology, including insulin resistance and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, thyroid, pituitary and adrenal disorders.

Dr Sheu has published in a number of peer-reviewed journals and has been an invited speaker to national Bone and Physician conferences. In 2015, she was awarded the Graz Clock Award for Best Oral Presentation at Australian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society (ADIPS) scientific meeting, and in 2016 she won the NSW Trainee Research Award in Adult Medicine by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). She currently receives awards from National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Diabetes Australia, Osteoporosis Australia and RACP.

She is compassionate and dedicated to patient care, teaching and research. She regularly attends national and international meetings in order to provide her patients with up to date and evidence-based, comprehensive individualised care. She is a member of multiple national and international societies (Australian Diabetes Society, Endocrine Society Australia, Australian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society, Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society and American Society for Bone and Mineral Research). Dr Faruque Riffat is a consultant ENT Head and Neck Surgeon with post-FRACS fellowship training in head and neck oncology, paediatric ENT, thyroid and parathyroid surgery and adult airway open / endoscopic laser surgery. He joined the Westmead Hospital ENT Head Neck team after a period as a consultant in the head and neck team in Cambridge University Hospitals and is also the consultant in charge of the Westmead Tracheostomy Liaison Service.

Following the completion of his HSC as Dux of North Sydney Boys High School, Dr Riffat commenced his medical degree at UNSW graduating in 2002 with MBBS (Hons 1), obtaining prizes in anatomy and microbiology. His entire JMO training was at Westmead Hospital and he finished basic surgical training in 2005 after obtaining the prize for the highest score for the FRACS part 1. He has also been awarded a Master of Surgery.

After a series of teaching hospital rotations (Westmead, Prince of Wales, Royal North Shore, Liverpool, Westmead / Sydney Children’s and John Hunter) in the NSW otolaryngology training scheme, including 18 months of tertiary paediatric ENT surgery, he was awarded the FRACS (ORL) in 2010. He then embarked on fellowship training to London and Cambridge focusing on paediatric and adult airway surgery, oncological surgery and thyroid and parathyroid surgery. He has an active interest in teaching and research in ENT Head and Neck, having completed a masters in surgical education and has been involved in over 40 peer reviewed publications and abstracts.

Dr Riffat has expertise and experience in the surgical management of diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. He has public hospital admitting rights for adults and children through Westmead / Auburn Hospitals and private hospital admitting rights through Norwest, Westmead Private and Macquarie University Hospitals.

Dr Carsten Palme is an Otolaryngology ( Ear, Nose and Throat ) Head & Neck Surgeon and holds clinical appointments at The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Westmead Hospital, Sydney. He is Director of Head Neck Surgery at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and a senior member of the Head and Neck Service, Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre, Westmead. Dr Carsten Palme is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, Sydney University Medical School and the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney, Australia.

After attending medical school at the University of Sydney Dr Palme completed four years of advanced training in Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery and obtained his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2002. He completed post-training fellowships in the American Head and Neck Society Head and Neck Oncology Program, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada and in Laser Head and Neck Surgery, University of Goettingen, Goettingen, Germany.

Dr Palme is the inaugural recipient in 2009 of the Chris O’Brien Travelling Fellowship of the American Head and Neck Society. In 2010 Dr Palme was awarded the Coman Kennedy Laser Scholarship by the Australian and New Zealand Head Neck Society.
