I am a beauty lover but that’s probably pretty easy to figure out. . I’m constantly feeding my obsession by trying new beauty products so why not share my trials and errors with other people. I love drugstore and high end products and have tried many. I really want to be more involved in the beauty community and share my love of makeup, skincare, and haircare.
The Purity Made Simple Face Cleanser by Philosophy is an award-winning, cult favourite product. It has been around forever and for great reason. Because of the success of that cleanser, Philosophy has come out with an entire Purity line. What’s new to the line is the Purity Made Simple Ultra-Light Moisturizer.
So today, I’ll be talking all about the moisturizer I have been using as my day cream.
The Purity Made Simple Ultra-Light Moisturizer is, like it says in the name, a light-weight moisturizer meant to be used during the day time. This moisturizer contains a few different oils such as, chia seed oil and meadowfoam seed oil. It also contains vitamin C and E. This moisturizer makes your skin feel refreshed, bouncy and ready for makeup application.
It has the same signature scent as the Purity Made Simple Cleanser. It’s really pleasant and light. It smells like a light, sweet lemon if that makes any sense at all.
I’m super impressed with this moisturizer. The packaging is super nice because it’s a plastic container and has a pump. I love a moisturizer with a pump. I use 4 pumps of this moisturizer to cover my entire face. What I really love about this moisturizer is how it preps my skin for makeup. But, even if I put this moisturizer on and don’t wear any makeup, my skin feels quite hydrated for the whole day. It’s like a gel-cream formula and goes onto the skin really nicely. Using this moisturizer, my skin looks really dewy and moisturized under makeup. This is a great go-to moisturizer for the summer for someone with dry skin. In the winter, I need something a little heavier but have been absolutely loving this lately.
If that doesn’t sell you, I’ll tell you a little secret. At the same time I bought this moisturizer, my boyfriend bought it too and he loves it!
Do you love anything from the Purity like from Philosophy?
Have you ever wanted to put on face powder and it be made of 50% water? Becca Cosmetics Hydra-Mist Set & Refresh Powder has just answered all of your dreams. As a person with dry skin, I always dread putting face powder on because I know it has to set my foundation but it can also make me look super dry. If I apply to much it makes my face look cakey. If I don’t apply enough, my cheek products don’t blend out well enough.
When this super interesting product came out and I started to see reviews, I knew I had to try it.
The Becca Hydra-Mist Set & Refresh Powder is a super revolutionary powder because it’s first ingredient is water. It is meant to feel like you are putting a mist on your face when applying this powder. The name of this powder is absolutely bang on. It feels like a refreshing mist as you apply it to you skin.
It is an ultra-finely milled powder that has light-reflecting properties. It is meant to look smoother over the skin and blur imperfections.
This powder can be purchased at Sephora and it is $46 (CAD).
I really love the packaging of this powder because of the netting. This is a very non-messy powder. You just dip your brush into the netting and that is how you get the product. Then, when your done using it, you just close the the lid and voila, no mess at all.
Unfortunately for me, this powder didn’t work out for me. No matter what foundation I put this on top of, it made my foundation look really patchy. It made it look like my foundation was coming off in certain spots like around my nose, on my chin, and under my eyes. I wasn’t able to bake with this powder which is a big thing in a translucent powder. It felt absolutely amazing to put on but pretty much as soon as I would put it on, it made my skin look like crap.
I also think it made my foundation and concealer oxidize, or look darker, than it truly is.
Overall, a really cool, inventive product. But, it didn’t work out for me.
As someone who has a decent amount of makeup, I love my makeup storage. I don’t have a huge apartment so my makeup storage doesn’t take up much room which is perfect. It also looks really nice and tidy. Is what I have right now going to be my forever solution? Probably not. But, it works for me right now and I’m hoping it will give you some ideas.
If you want to know about my makeup storage and where I got everything, read on!
My makeup lives in the corner of my bedroom. My dresser is the perfect height for me to stand at with my vanity mirror and do my makeup. I have a bit of natural light that comes into my room so that really helps.
I got this makeup mirror as a gift so I’m not sure where it’s from but I think it was around $60. This one from Bed Bath and Beyond is similar.
My drawers are the Alex 9 drawers from Ikea in white. Almost every makeup blogger I know uses these drawers and thats because they aren’t that expensive, they look sleek, and they’re super functional. It has 9 drawers. The top 5 are smaller and the bottom 4 are a bit larger. It is $149 which isn’t a bad price considering some are as much at $500. It can be purchased here.
On top of my Ikea Alex drawers I keep my setting sprays, a beauty oil, and all my brushes. I have my face brushes split into base face brushes and cheek brushes. All of my eye brushes are in the same container. These vases I also got from ikea. I can’t find them on the website but I have seen them in the store recently. They were under $10 each.
My top drawer is all of my lipsticks, lip glosses, and lip liners. I have all of my Mac Cosmetics and higher end lipsticks in lipstick holders. In the far left drawer is all of my lip glosses and in the middle drawer is lip balms and lip liners. The far right container has mis matched lipsticks that wouldn’t fit in lipstick holders. I got all of these clear containers at Winners.
A drawer that I’m missing because it isn’t organized the way I want it is my bronzers and primers. I have them in one drawer right now and I’m not crazy about it. Sorry!!!
My next drawer is all cheek products. I have blushes and highlighters in this drawer. I have a blush palette from Lorac which I definitely need to use more. I also have cream blushes and highlighters together. All of my powder blushes are in the middle container. Powder and some liquid highlighters are in the far right container. Love this drawer!
This drawer contains some different eye products. On the right are my eye primers and eyelash glue. Below that is my mascaras and eyelash curler. In the middle container is eyeliner and eyebrow products. In the far right containers are liquid and cream shadows.
All of my eye palettes are in one drawer. I love this drawer because I can see all of the palettes I have. This has high end and drugstore palettes. It also contains some eyeshadow quads.
I have another drawer with large eyeshadow palettes that are laying down such as large Morphe eyeshadow palettes and my Z palette.
Another one of my favourite drawers is my face base products. All of my foundations can stand up in the far left container. I also keep my beauty blender in here. My concealers are in the middle compartment. I have all of my foundations that won’t stand up in the middle laying down. On the right side I keep my face powders. I mostly use loose powders so thats what I have the most of!
This drawer is a mix of a bunch of products and all of my liquid lipsticks. This has all of my lashes, nail polish remover, and random products. I love being able to go through this drawer and see all of my liquid lipsticks. Unfortunately, I kind of throw random products in here.
My last drawer has all of my nail polishes. The are separated into neutrals, everyday colours, base coats and top coats, and everything else. I love storing my nail polishes this way because I can see them all and see all of the colours.
How do you store your makeup? I love getting inspiration from other people!
This concealer has been the talk of the beauty town for a while now. That is for one major reason: it is said to be a dupe for the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer. If you don’t know what that is, you have been living under a massive rock. Tarte Shape Tape is the best concealer known to mankind. If there is a concealer that is less expensive and just as good, you better believe I’m gonna pick that bad boy out and put it to the test.
This concealer is by an up and coming brand called Makeup Revolution. As far as I know, it’s only available at Ulta. Great news for my Canadian girls, Ulta now ships to Canada! It is $7 (USD) and around $9 (CAD). AMAZING PRICE!
This concealer comes in 25 different shades (more than Shape Tape). This is an amazing shade range! The shades I like to use are C1 for under my eyes and C7 for my face.
The formula of this concealer is super creamy and blendable. For those familiar with the Shape Tape formula, the Makeup Revolution concealer is a little more of a thin formula. I find this concealer to be a lightweight but medium to full coverage concealer. If it makes any sense, it gives great coverage but feels super lightweight. It doesn’t really feel like you’re wearing concealer and yet, what you want covered is covered.
The applicator of the Makeup Revolution is similar to the Tape Shape Concealer in that, it’s larger than most concealer. It’s not as big as the Tarte one, but definitely competes with it.
All in all, this concealer does what I need it to do. It covers what I need it to cover and brightens my under eyes. I don’t have a ton of discolouration and my under eyes are terrible but it works for me. It is not crease proof but no concealer are crease proof on me. I set all of my concealers with powder and this one is no different. This concealer is a great budget-friendly choice!
Sometimes when I use the Tarte Shape Tape and then set my under eyes, they look a little bit dry. When I use the Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define, it doesn’t do this.
Have you tried this concealer? Do you like the brand Makeup Revolution?
There are three makeup products I am always the most excited to buy and try out. My biggest is foundation. My second favourite is eyeshadow palettes and my third is concealer. I also love trying out anything drugstore. If I can find something amazing at an affordable cost, it’s like winning the lottery for me. So, when I saw the ads start to come out for the Maybelline Lemonade Craze Eyeshadow Palette, I got super excited. The colours are gorgeous and Mayeblline’s eyeshadows are usually really good!
This eyeshadow palette is really interesting. It’s not your typical neutral eyeshadow palette. It does have some neutrals but also has some really nice pops of colour. One great thing about this eyeshadow palette that I don’t find with many other drugstore eyeshadow palettes is that you can create a whole look with this palette.
This palette contains 8 satin/matte shadows and 4 metallic shimmer shadows. Of course, the shimmer colours are much more pigmented on a finger swatch than the matte shadows. The colours, honestly, didn’t swatch nicely at all. But, I can never judge a palette based on swatching. I have to try it on my eyes.
I love the warm tones of these shadows but there is also a nice mix of a couple cool toned shadows. The shadows are fairly pigmented. They didn’t blow my mind, pigmented, but they blend out really nicely. I was worried about that raspberry colour but it ended up blending really well.
What is also interesting that a lot of brands are doing now a days is, this product is scented. It’s got a light citrus scent. It’s very subtle but if you get your nose right in there you can smell it.
These shadows do have a ton of powder kick up when you use them and a lot of fall out on your face. This is something I can work around by doing my eye makeup before my foundation.
Overall, I’m really happy I picked up this eyeshadow palette. It has colours that I don’t have yet. It also blends really nicely and you can create a seamless look. Is it my favourite eyeshadow palette ever? Well, I don’t pick favourites but I wouldn’t say so.
Have any of you tried out this palette? What did you think?
As a beauty blogger I have begun to reach out to brands to see if they would like to collaborate for a review. When it’s a local, Canadian brand it’s even better. I recently reached out to a brand called Natural Well Co (or cynthia_aesthetics on insta) because they looked like they had amazing bath and body products. This is an Etsy shop and can be found here.
The owner of the company was super sweet and we exchanged a few instagram DM’s before she sent me some products. She wanted to make sure I received exactly what I wanted in the scents I wanted. She would respond to my messages in a matter of a couple hours, which I really appreciated.
This brand sells Natural Wellness products that are all homemade by the owner, Cynthia. She makes bath bombs, linen sprays, air mists, body butters, bubble baths, cuticle oil, and more. She uses all natural ingredients and includes essential oils in most of the products. I’m obsessed with essential oils right now (basic) so I really appreciate this. She is based in Laval, Quebec.
The two products I chose are the Bubble Bath in the scent Vanilla & Lavender and the Body Butter in the scent Vanilla & Coconut.
The packaging of this bubble bath is really nice. It comes in a glass bottle and would look really nice displayed in your bathroom. This bubble baths claim to fame is the lasting power of the bubbles. They do last a long time. I, personally, can’t stay in the bath longer than 30 minutes and they lasted the whole time. Not only that, the scent is to die for. I love using lavender anything when I’m about to hop into bed and the scent of this made me drift off into snooze land. You get between 10-18 uses, depending on how much you use and how big your tub is.
This bubble bath is $18 (CAD).
This body butter is no moisturizing joke. Its main component is Shea Butter but also has coconut oil, grapeseed oil, argan oil, and sweet almond oil. This sucker will keep your moisturized for a couple days. It’s super thick and you kind of have to dig at it but its so good once you get going. A little bit of this body butter goes a super long way. When I first applied it, it felt a little pilly if that makes any sense. But once I started to work it into my skin, it just melted right in. There is a ton of different scents for this body butter, too. Check it out!
For as long as I have been into makeup I have gone back and forth on the best way to apply my foundation. For the first few years I only used a brush for my foundation. Then, for the last few years I have been strictly a sponge girl. I had never put them head to head before now! I decided to do half of my face with a brush and the other half with a sponge. I made sure to use a brush I know I like and a sponge I know I like.
I also decided to use a bit of an oldie but a goodie foundation. For this head to head, I used the Maybelline Fit Me Dewy and Smooth. This foundation is great!
Before doing this experiment, I made sure to prep my skin really well. I moisturized and used a good primer.
For the sponge I chose my fave which is the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. The key to using a sponge to apply your foundation and concealer is to wet it first. This is crucial. I love using a sponge to apply my foundation. I find it gives that amazing airbrushed look.
For the foundation brush, I chose the good old Sigma F84. It is a synthetic angled Kabuki brush. It buffs in foundation and is easy to get it all the hard to reach places because of the angle. Since it’s synthetic it doesn’t soak up a bunch of product like a sponge does. I can’t apply my concealer with a brush though. I don’t find it blends out enough.
Although you can’t really see it in the picture, I found that the brush left streaks on my face. I tried to buff the foundation into my skin as best as I could but the streaks wouldn’t leave. I also find the damp sponge gave more of a dewy look to my skin.
The sponge made my foundation look much more natural than the brush did. So, if I was going to recommend a way to apply foundation I would for sure say a sponge. The sponge makes the application super easy, too. It’s absolutely perfect for beginners!
A few weeks ago I received a mysterious package, opened it up, and screamed. No, I did not scream with fear. I screamed with absolutely excitement and overwhelming joy. I received an amazing package with It Cosmetics Skincare products. Inside this package was a few of their best selling products including; a cleanser, a face cream, and an eye cream.
Today, we’ll be talking all about It Cosmetics Skincare and their “Confidence” line.
It Cosmetics is a cosmetics brand that is developed with Plastic Surgeons. The products contain a ton of anti-aging properties and skin-loving ingredients. Even their makeup contains amazing skincare ingredients. This brand also is 100% cruelty free.
It Cosmetics is sold at Sephora, Ulta, and can be purchased on the It Cosmetics website. They also ship to Canada (YAY).
If you have a few minutes go check out some of the brands other products. They have a “Your Skin But Better” line, a “Bye Bye Redness” line, a “Bye Bye Pores” line, and much more.
Every product in the “Confidence” line contains Anti-Aging Armour Rejuvenating Concentrate which It Cosmetics has actually trademarked. In this concentrate is collagen, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and a super ceramide concentrate.
Let’s first off start with the cleanser. This is called Confidence in a Cleanser. This is a straight up hydrating serum cleanser. Could that sound any better for dry skin? This cleanser hydrates the skin but also cleanses really nicely. This leaves my skin clean but not squeaky clean in an uncomfortable way. I find it removes all my makeup really well. I wear waterproof mascara and it doesn’t remove every single trace of that but it’s really good.
This cleanser is $36 (CAD).
The Confidence In A Cream is a cream that can be used day or night to transform your skin. I have used this during the day and at night and I find it absorbs into the skin really quickly. It’s a really plumping that makes my skin feel amazing. When I wake up in the morning I feel like my skin is glowing. This cream also helped my makeup glide on my skin much faster. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, makeup looks amazing on clean, hydrated skin!
This cream is $62 (CAD).
The Confidence In An Eye Cream is a brightening and hydrating eye cream. I have really dry under eyes, as the rest of my skin, so I need a really hydrating eye cream. I also suffer from chronic dark circles. No matter how much sleep I get I have dark circles. This plumps the under eyes and also helps with puffiness. I find this actually helps to brighten my dark circles. I have used this at night and during the dark and it looks great under makeup.
This eye cream is $48 (CAD).
Have you tried anything from It Cosmetics? What are you favourites?
To counteract all the negativity in my last post, I thought I should do a favourites post! I love rummaging through my makeup drawers and looking at all the products I’ve used this month. All of these, actually, were no brainers.
I love favourites posts so let’s get on with talking about my favourite beauty products from the month of April.
My journey to find the perfect face primer has been a tough one. I’ve tried so many that I don’t find do anything for my skin. But, the Huda Beauty Complexion Perfection Base Primer is my favourite one that I’ve tried. It makes my foundation glide on like butter and doesn’t dry my skin at all! It also makes my makeup last really well. It has kind of a tacky formula so it’s great for making the foundation stick. I did mention this in my last favourites but I have been using this consistently.
My go-to foundation for the last month and a bit has been the Physician’s Formula The Healthy Foundation. I did a full review on this foundation here. But basically, the name of the foundation says it all. It makes my skin look perfected but super healthy. It adds a nice flow to my skin but not totally greasy. Love this so much!
If you’ve never put Mac Cosmetics Nylon eyeshadow on the inner corner of your eyes then you are missing out, my friend. This is a gorgeous shimmery, pale gold eyeshadow. It makes the eyes really pop. It’s a nicely pigmented shade and it’s super buttery. This would also be really pretty as a face highlight.
I ran out of my Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask a few weeks back and thought I was doomed for sure. But, Glossier Balm Dotcom Skin Salve saved the day. I have mine in the coconut flavour and it adds amazing moisture to my lips. I used this as a lip balm one night and when I woke up in the morning my lips were super smooth. I’ve been using this ever since and it’s amazing.
Do I love doing these posts? Yes and no. No, I don’t love hating on products which a company has worked hard to create but at the same time, I don’t love every single product I try. I try not to talk about bad products on my blog but sometimes I need to round up the ones that really disappointed me. This can either be because of the formula, the shade, it didn’t work for my skin, or other reasons.
So, today I’ll be talking about a few products that disappointed me.
First up might be a bit of a shock. I’m like most people in the fact that I love Becca Highlighters. But, the shade Opal does not work on my skin tone. It looks like a brownish brown streak across my face. So, just for that, I’m disappointed in it.
Let me talk about this Pixi eyeshadow palette. This is the Mesmerizing Eyeshadow Palette in Opal Glow. The thing I didn’t like about this eyeshadow palette is that all the colours didn’t have enough pigmentation and looks pretty much the same. It would be great for someone who loves natural eyeshadow but that isn’t me.
I talked about the Ulta Brand Tinted Eyeshadow Primer in my Ulta Brand review but, I do not like this product at all. It’s in the colour Pearl. It adds a very noticeable shimmer to the eyes and I don’t even want shimmer all over my eyes. I’m not of a matte in the crease, shimmer on the lid kind of girl. I’ll probably be throwing this out.
What is it with me and eyeshadow primers? I also didn’t like the Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer. I have this in the light shade. It has a tint to it and I found it didn’t blend in very well. I used my fingers, as a normally would, but I couldn’t get it to blend at all. Because of that, my eyeshadow sat on top of it really weird.
Last is from the ever-famous Too Faced Peach collection. This is the Too Faced Blur Powder. This powder is supposed to blur pores and perfect lines. I didn’t find this powder didn’t anything to my skin. If anything, it left a subtle peach tint and nothing else. Especially for the price, I wanted this to be special. It smells really good, though.
What are some of your disappointing products?
