When you get to a certain age (it’s usually over 40) most “beauty” treatments cause some discomfort. Don’t get me wrong when I have a facial I actually enjoy feeling it because at least I know it’s doing something. But when you find a treatment that is not only pampering but also jumpstarts your skin’s own collagen production then that’s a double bonus in my book. Enter LED Light Therapy – a treatment that was new to me until recently when I started a course of nine LED sessions at Auckland’s, Haven Skin Spa in Takapuna.

Leonie arriving for a relaxing LED session at Haven Takapuna. The LED treatments always make me smile.

Take a sneak peek at my treatment in the video below. Just skip to 4.20 to see my LED treatment in action.

WHAT IS LED LIGHT THERAPY?

LED Light Therapy is a clinically-proven skin rejuvenation treatment and has been hailed as one of the most effective non-invasive, anti-aging treatments around. It’s designed to brighten a dull complexion (something that happens naturally as we age) and leave your skin looking healthier, fresher and more youthful. Winning!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

In layman terms, LED Light Therapy delivers highly concentrated waves of energy in the form of light to stimulate your skin’s own natural collagen and elastin production.

This type of treatment is often used in the medical profession to stimulate wound healing and trigger cellular activity.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

There are many proven benefits and include increased collagen and elastin production, reduction of sunspots, improvement in the appearance of fine lines and the overall tone and texture of the skin. The light can also be used to heal blemishes, pimples, acne and other similar skin conditions.

Haven Takapuna is a lovely place to treat your face. Leonie undergoing a LED yellow light treatment at Haven.

MY EXPERIENCE

I had nine treatments of LED Light Therapy over a course of three weeks. Each week consisted of two yellow light treatments and one red light treatment. The yellow light penetrates a little deeper than the red light so the effects are not as immediate. The red light leaves your skin looking and feeling immediately plumper and radiant but the effects are not as long lasting as the yellow light. This is why the two light treatments are used in tandem as part of the three week series.

It’s not surprising, these treatments quickly became my new obsession. On a cold day there was nothing more luxurious than snuggling down under the covers, getting a divine arm massage (yes truly) while my face basked in in gorgeous golden, warming glow.

There is also no downtime after each treatment which is really handy if you opt for the series like I did. Before I began my treatments, I was told that LED Light Therapy has a cumulative effect on the skin cells, with each treatment building on the last. I was also told to expect my skin to keep improving over the coming weeks. To be honest I was initially a little skeptical about this but it’s been three weeks post treatments and I can hand-on-heart say my skin has continued to improve each day. I’ve mostly noticed the texture of my skin change. It’s definitely smoother and feels as though it’s been gently resurfaced. I’m also noticing that my foundation glides on easier and my fine lines are most definitely less noticeable. All in all I’m really loving the results and would definitely recommend this treatment – especially in winter!

My favourite pair of Quay Australia High Key sunglasses.

You don’t need to spend a fortune to secure yourself a pair of designer sunglasses. And if you’re anything like me and have a tendency to lose, break or sit on your favourite pair then it’s time to give your wallet a break and take a look at my favourite sunglasses brand Quay Australia.

With these stunning sunnies – all under $100 – you can fearlessly take them wherever you go and not suffer the crippling fear that your expensive glasses might up and vanish. Because we all know how sunglasses often have a tendency to do that right?

If you haven’t yet discovered Quay Australia then you’re in for a real treat too. The website lets you virtually try on every pair before you take the plunge – pretty cool right? And the label also has a swag of cool celeb collabs under its belt too – think Kylie Jenner, Desi Perkins and Jaclyn Hill to name a few. So what are you waiting for? Scroll down to see how I wear my fave pairs and whip on over and check out the fab new lust-worthy styles at Quay Australia.

A classic aviator style suits most people. Leonie (right) out to lunch and sporting her new Quay Australia sunnies. This pair of sunglasses look great dressed up or worn more casually too. These High Key frames come in a range of colours and sizes. These frames work well dressed up for a lunch with the girls or a lazy day at the beach.

I’m not one to highlight fashion faux pas because I really do believe that fashion should be fun and of course it’s a great way to truly express who we are. But there are some common mistakes that will always make us look older than we actually are. I’ve just turned 52 and while I don’t want to look like I’m in my 30s – I also don’t want to look too mature either. I suppose you could say I just want to look like like a more youthful version of a 52-year-old – without looking young and silly – if that makes sense.

So if you want to overhaul your style for the better and stay looking youthful then my latest video (below) is for you.

And it’s highly likely it’s the clutter that’s keeping you from seeing what you really own and making it harder for you to put outfits together. When it comes to your closet less is more. So take a look at my short video and start decluttering now!

Ingredients
  1. 2 1/4 cups of standard flour
  2. 1/2 tsp baking powder
  3. 2 tsp ground ginger
  4. 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  5. 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  6. 1/2 tsp salt
  7. 115 g butter, softened
  8. 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  9. 2 eggs
  10. 1/4 cup molasses (or golden syrup)
  11. 1 cup Tasti Macadamia nuts
  12. Small bag of white chocolate chips
Instructions
  1. Preheat over to 180 degrees celsius. Place baking paper on an oven tray and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, spices and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar on medium speed with a hand mixer until light and fluffy - about 2 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then beat in the molasses until well mixed. On low speed, beat in the flour mixture until just combined, then fold in the macadamia nuts.
  4. Sprinkle flour on your bench and turn the dough out onto it. Divide dough in half and shape into two logs - flatten them slightly on top. Place on the prepared baking trays and bake for around 30 minutes or until the top is cracked and the dough looks dry. Remove from oven and cool for about 10 minutes.
  5. Reduce the oven to 130 degrees celsius and arrange oven racks to the top and bottom thirds of the oven.
  6. Place the logs on a cutting board and using a serrated knife, slice biscotti slightly on the bias and place cut side down onto the baking tray.
  7. Place in the oven for 30-40 mins or until dry and lightly browned, rotating the trays from top to bottom and front to back halfway through the baking time. Cool on wire racks.
  8. Melt white chocolate according to instructions on packet and dip biscotti into melted chocolate and place on a wire rack to set. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 months.

Special occasion dressing can be really tricky but knowing where to shop definitely takes the hard work out of it. Last weekend I attended a ball and found the perfect dress at Auckland’s GLAMOUR so thought it was a great time to share some of my top tips for finding the perfect ball gown or any formal wear for that matter.

#1 Do your research

Before you even head out your front door whip online and do a little research. If you don’t know where to start google: where to find ball gowns – this will usually give you a selection of formal wear options in your location. Then you can take a look at their websites and see if they stock the sort of dresses you’re looking for. It’s also a great idea to google: red carpet fashions to see who’s wearing what and get some great ideas.

#2 Try, try, try

Shopping for formal wear can be a little like shopping for a great pair of jeans – you need to try on as many dresses as you can. Often the gowns you least expect to love will be the ones that come out on top. Take a quick look at my short video below to see a few of the dresses I tried on at GLAMOUR in my search for the perfect ball gown.

The Style Insider Goes Ball Gown Shopping - YouTube

#3 Start looking early

Don’t leave it to the last minute to shop for a ball gown or any special occasion wear. For starters, when you’re spending a decent amount of money on a gown you don’t want to settle for anything less than you love. Also you do need to allow some time to make any necessary alterations and shop for accessories too.

#4 Take photos

It’s often easy to get swept up in the moment when you’re shopping for formal wear so it’s a great idea to take photos of each gown you try on and then you can take your time to make your decision. It’s also a great way to show friends and family a few of your choices and get their input too.

#5 Ask for help

If you go to the right places the staff will be your biggest allies so ask for their help. The team at GLAMOUR are all experienced stylists and will help you find the perfect dress for your body shape and type. So don’t ever be too shy to ask for help. If the staff don’t bend over backwards to help you then you may need to vote with your feet.

#6 Choose your colour

Colours and patterns say so much about your personal style so take the lead from some of the colours and styles you feel most comfortable in. I always feel my most stylish wearing black which is possibly why I chose a black dress so start looking for a colour or pattern you love and then get a little adventurous from there.
