The Blessed Mess | Lifestyle Blog for the Millennial Mom
My name is Ryan and I am the voice of The Blessed Mess Blog! I am a wife, new Mom to my son, Liam. This blog is where I post about parenting wins and Mom life, my love of food, beauty, fitness and finding balance in this blessed, but sometimes messy, life of mine!
How cool is this spill stopper for pots that boil over? We could have used this twice in the last week resulting in not so fun stains to scrub off our stove and also put out the burners. Ugh. Complete first world problems buuuutttttttt I’m definitely thinking we need one of these bad boys!
We’re not traveling this year since we’re expecting in the next few months and saving time to stay home with our sweet babe but if we were, I’d want to check out a few of these islands! Sadly, I’ve only been to #7 (one of my favorite places on Earth) so clearly we need to get cracking!
This is specifically aimed at those of you with kids but if you have ever bought Uncrustables, they are so stinking expensive for only a few sandwiches! Well look no further than this little contraption and for $11 you can make unlimited homemade uncrustables yourself! Definitely going to prep a bunch of these and throw them in the freezer for quick lunches.
If you are in the mood for a non-alcoholic (clearly up my alley for the next 2 months) summer beverage, look no further than the new White Peach Tea Lemonade at Chick-fil-A! I haven’t tried this yet but you bet your britches I’m going to try it today. I love peach tea so I have high hopes for this and Chick-fil-A has yet to let me down. Also, the peach milkshake is back as of yesterday. Thank me later.
As I mentioned in #5 of my Top 5 Favorite Pink Lip Colors post from last week, I wore that lip color on Saturday and put it on around 3:00pm and when I went to take my makeup off after 11:00pm and I still had it on my lips and didn’t reapply at all! I had to scrub it with a wet wash cloth like crazy to get it off. If that doesn’t tell you how well it stays on, I don’t know what will!
Best easy breakfast ever: toast, mashed avocado, fried egg topped with Everything but the Bagel seasoning. So filling and so, so yummy.
Anyone have these align pants? I’ve heard they’re great for maternity and postpartum and I’m trying to determine if they’re worth the investment. I have a pair of Wunder Unders and while I love them and wear them, they’re not my all-time faves and they piled which I find very frustrating for a $100 pair of leggings.
As a follow-up to my Beauty Let’s Talk Tuesday, I have been using IT cosmetics Your Skin but Better CC Cream for 2 weeks now and it is ah-mazing! I cannot recommend it enough! I started with the trial size to make sure I liked it and it didn’t make me break out but I feel like everyone should have this in their makeup bag.
A month or so ago I posted a poll on Instagram Stories asking if y’all would want to see a post with my favorite lip colors so your wish is my command! These are my favorite tried and true pink lip colors. Until the past few years, I was a chapstick gal (still am) but would only wear a lip color for dressy occasions and would always go for a darker color (my all-time fave is Love Child). However, I have started venturing out into lighter lip colors for the warmer months and I have to admit, I am loving them.
My all-time favorite lip color(s) ever. EVER! It’s basically a hybrid between chapstick and lipstick. It always keeps my lips feeling moisturized, protects them with SPF but adds a little pop of color so my lips don’t look washed out. Petal is the perfect color to still look semi-natural but enough that you feel like your lips are “done”. It’s also the most expensive item that I’m listing but it’s worth the money and then some. I have two and plan to buy a few different colors and the advanced therapy lip treatment as well!
This lip color is my #2 because while it is a little drying on the lips after a while, it is the perfect nude-pink color. It even won an Allure award for the Best of Beauty award for being the best “your lips but better” color. This color will also leave a little tint on your lips after it wears off so it still gives a slight illusion of lip color. Plus, it’s super affordable so this definitely needs to be in your makeup bag!
Creme Brulee was the first “nude pink” lip color I ever tried after seeing Jaclyn Hill wear it in a makeup tutorial. While this is a bit “sticky” as lip glosses go, it’s a great color and, again, is super affordable. I always carry this with me in my purse just in case.
This is the most recent purchase in this list but has quickly become a favorite. It’s definitely the most vibrant pink of the group (way more pink than the tube makes it look) but now that I’m blonde, I’m loving it! Like #2, this one is a matte color so it is great with a clear gloss of some sort if you don’t care for the super matte feeling. I put good ol Carmex on over it and it worked like a charm!
Have you heard of Lipsense? This is the drugstore version of Lipsense at a fraction of the cost. I haven’t personally tried Lipsense to really know how comparable they are but this stuff does. Not. Come. Off. Literally, I have to scrub my lips with a wet wash cloth at night to get it all off and they even make a remover for it but I just haven’t cracked down and bought it. If you have an event to go to and don’t want your lip color to come off on your glass through the night, or on the cheeks of your babies as you smother them in kisses, this is what you need.
Currently accepting recommendations for shows to binge on Netflix while on maternity leave in a few months! I’m planning to re-watch Dawson’s Creek because, well, it was amazing but I need someone new ones too!
Now that Summer is in full swing, I’m looking to break out all of our favorite Summer dishes. Loving this list of ideas to get us started. #9 is a classic that we make all summer long. I do think they forgot the simplest of simple recipes though – Cucumber and tomato salad! So easy, so light and so fresh for hot summer days! I made some this weekend and I have been gobbling it up.
I feel like I have tried about every mascara known to man trying to find the best of the best. This article has tons of great information on all sorts of mascara tips and tricks. However, my lashes are pathetic so I’ll probably still stick to my falsies for everyday because they’re just so darn perfect!
Call it a crazy pregnancy craving or call it delicious (I’m going to call it both) but this white clam pizza sounds absolutely amazing right now. I’m not so sure I can get Tyler onboard with this craving though.
I still can’t believe we lost both Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain last week. It truly goes to show you that while someone may appear to “have it all”, you really have no idea what they are battling behind closed doors. My heart goes out to their families.
Can someone please bake this for me? I definitely don’t need to eat it but man it sounds and looks simply scrumptious!
We are nearing the end of the 2nd trimester! It’s so crazy to believe that I will be in the 3rd trimester in a few weeks. I have heard countless 2nd (or more) time moms say how quickly your 2nd pregnancy goes by and man were they not kidding! I hardly ever check the app on my phone, which I checked religiously with Liam, because, really, why do I care what size fruit she is this week? Life just is so much busier now with a toddler already at home that it really does amaze me that I’m this far along in my pregnancy. The real kicker was when I realized that Memorial Day is the unofficial start to Summer and Labor Day is the unofficial end to Summer and we just had Memorial Day which means we have 3 months until this baby is here. Like how is this real life?!
Most excitingly (for the planner in me anyway) we have an induction date! Technically it’s not scheduled with the hospital yet but at my 24 week appointment my doctor confirmed that I will be induced at 39 weeks on September 4th. So we’ll have a baby hopefully by the 5th provided she doesn’t plan to make her debut a little early. I had such a great labor with Liam and went into labor naturally so I do have some slight anxiety around being induced as I know there is an increased risk of c-section with inductions. We had a good conversation with my doctor about it though and I feel good about the plan we have in place for now and once we see if I’m GBS positive or how (if at all) dilated I am prior to induction, I should hopefully be able to labor on my own without any medical intervention.
Other than that, crazy pregnancy dreams have made an appearance. Like seriously, so elaborate and so crazy. I know it’s normal but holy cow do they still catch me off guard sometimes!
How I’m Feeling:
Pretty good overall. I really can’t complain. My only real complaint is this little lady is sitting super low. Really anytime I’m not reclined or laying down she’s putting a ton more pressure on my pelvic area than I had when I was pregnant with Liam. Given how low she is and some of the cramping I’ve had, we’re going to do an ultrasound at my next appointment to check her size and make sure I’m not showing any signs of preterm label.
I’ve also started to notice now that the temperature is creeping up that at the end of the day my feet seem to be a little swollen. Not anything crazy or of concern but enough that I know I need to prop them up for a bit at the end of the day. I legit had Frankenstein feet with Liam at the end of my pregnancy so I know towards the end I will definitely get more swollen but right now I’m enjoying that all of my shoes fit and I don’t have cankles. Oh and movement. So much movement. We are already able to see kicks outside my belly which blows my mind.
Food Cravings and Aversions:
Brownies and watermelon have been recent favorites especially now that watermelon is almost at it’s prime. I literally have been making a pan (or two) of brownies a week and cannot get enough! This craving is odd to me as I typically don’t care for brownies much but not now. And cake-like brownies are for the birds! This preggo mama needs them to be fudgy! Fortunately, watermelon is a healthier craving so I like to think it balances out the brownies, right? It doesn’t matter if it’s morning, afternoon or night I can chow down on some watermelon and it’s super refreshing and hydrating (hello pregnancy thirst!). Also, while my craving for lemonade never fully left, my need to have it is back!
As for aversions, I don’t have any crazy aversions thankfully but salmon still hasn’t sounded good at all. I feel like my main “aversion” is really more planning to have something whether it be for dinner on our weekly meal plan or what I’ve packed for lunch, even if it was great the night before, just sounding gross when its time to eat it. Like turns my stomach gross.
Let’s be real, sometimes drugstore makeup gets a bad rap. It’s cheap, it’s bad for your skin, the pigments aren’t as good, etc. All of these can, be true at times but not always! I feel like back in the 90’s and early 2000’s drugstore make up certainly was lower quality but they’ve come along way and you don’t have to spend a ton of money to look like a million bucks.
Sometimes you just need some trial and error to find what works best for you and your skin and what products you like the most.
Literally every bit of makeup in the above pictures is drugstore even down to the brushes! Why break the bank on makeup from Sephora or Ulta when you can achieve the same look for less? Don’t get me wrong, I love shopping at both of those stores with the best of them and do love and use products from there but I also don’t have a huge budget to spend on makeup so if I can cut corners in certain places and still get the same quality look I’m going for, why wouldn’t I?
Would you be interested in seeing a makeup tutorial? I have debated on and off if I should venture into doing videos so make sure to leave your feedback in the comments!
Can we talk about the Royal Wedding? We recorded it and watched it once we got up and I have to say I’m totally obsessed! Megan looked stunning although her 2nd dress was definitely my favorite. I still don’t think anything will top Kate’s dress for me though! Simply gorgeous. Tyler and I have talked about going to England for our 5 year anniversary next year and now we’re both even more excited to go and plan our trip. Think Kate, William, Harry and Megan will want to triple date?
Speaking of Royals, Liam’s first name is William and we plan to name our baby girl Elizabeth Grace (Ellie for short). So currently we have a Prince William and will have a Queen Elizabeth on our hands! Apparently we really like Royal names!
Who knew Amazon had a great selection of thank you cards?! I know I’ll be needing these in the coming months and took a gander and they have a ton to choose from that are affordable. I should never doubt Amazon.
This weekend is Memorial Day which means the unofficial start to Summer! We have some fun stuff planned but more than anything looking forward to the pool being open! We got Liam his first floaties and he “tried them on” earlier and it was too stinking cute. He absolutely loves them and can’t wait to rock them in the pool! Oh and they’re on sale with the Cartwheel app so make sure to get the coupon if you need to get one for your little one(s)!
I finally got our garden planted! We haven’t had a garden since we moved into this house 3 years ago this weekend (my how time flies!) so I’m starting small with just tomatoes, basil and cucumbers. Next year I’ll add another bed like this one to add some squash, another tomato plant and jalapeños!
Why are maternity jumpsuits a thing? I just can’t see how they would be flattering no matter how cute and pregnant you are. I saw this one at Target and was tempted to try it on but I heard Fat Amy in my head from Pitch Perfect saying “Mmm better not.”
I absolutely love everything about being pregnant and don’t mind the aches and pains that come with it (someone remind me of this in August when I’m the size of a house). However, maternity clothes just aren’t as cute as non-maternity and I’m definitely looking forward to getting my body back this fall so I can get back into all of the super cute styles I’m seeing.
Also while Summer pregnancies are long and hot, there is definitely something to be said for having a baby in September. It’s still warm but it’s also right in time for Fall and cozy sweaters to cover up the postpartum mombod. All hail oversized sweaters!
After sensing a theme with my topics this week, I call this week’s Let’s Talk Tuesday – Beauty edition!
Eyebrow stencils – worth it or not? After realizing I had drawn in one eyebrow slightly smaller than the other yesterday, I feel like maybe I need these to ensure they’re symmetrical…or that I’m not rushed in the morning.
I’m a true Millennial and have wanted to try a mask like this ever since seeing it on social media because I have a sick thing with loving to peel stuff like that off. I know I can’t be the only one who likes to peel off sunburned skin?? Anyway, a peel-off mask that has glitter? Sign me up! It would also be the first thing I’ve purchased at Urban Outfitters since college.
I am dyyyying over this palette. Urban Decay never seems to let me down and this combo of of eye shadows and blushes is insane. Definitely a summer beauty must-have!Having a child has made my dark circles way worse than my pre-child days (what is sleep?) and I have heard amazing things about this concealer! It is definitely on my list to get at Sephora during my next trip.
Hit me with your favorite BB and/or CC Cream recommendations! I have loved the Rimmel London BB Cream and I can’t seem to find it in stores anywhere! I picked up the Maybelline Dream BB Cream and don’t care for it at all. I’ve heard great things about the IT Cosmetics CC Cream but have also heard it made people break out so leave your favorites in the comments. Also, Ulta is running a deal on the CC Cream today so get it while it’s hot!
See also, I bought this NARS Multiple Stick when I needed blush trying to mix it up but I’m not really a fan. I think maybe I just don’t know how to apply it right? Has anyone used this? Or know how to apply it so I don’t feel like I look like a Barbie doll.
Has anyone tried this blurring setting powder? I’m typically a fan of the cheap drugstore stuff that does the same job as the Laura Mercier but I’m intrigued by the blurring aspect of it.
Did you know Ulta now carries MAC products?? Not sure how I missed this but it’s amazing! Although, their in-store selection is rather limited but it’s great for online purchases. Especially if you use Ebates!
Tyler and I talk all the time about how I feel like Liam crumbles as soon as I walk through the door. He could have been cheery and totally fine with Tyler but the second I come home he loses it. And now we know why.
If you like to take food photos for Instagram like I do, these tips and tricks will help you take share-worthy pics like a pro!
If I had to pick my favorite cuisine flavors it would easily be Mediterranean hands down. How delicious does this sound for a yummy and healthy dinner? I’ll definitely be adding this to our menu next week! Ok, this one looks amazing too even though I’m not a burger person. But that artichoke feta spread? Yep, I’m in!
For all of my expecting Southern mamas, did you know that Beaufort Bonnet Company has a registry?? Seriously debating this for my sprinkle so little miss can have allllllllll of the adorable things!
In case you forgot, this week is Teacher Appreciation week. Don’t forget to show some love to your favorite teachers! My post from last year has some great ideas that use mostly everything you already have on hand!
Have you heard of this facial? Or seen it on YouTube or Facebook? It looks a little freaky but seems worth it for that glow! I’m curious if any of you have tried it out before! And more importantly, if it’s offered locally.
Can we just talk about how much better you feel after getting your hair done? Like it refreshes your whole life and not just your hair! I got my hair done Saturday afternoon and man it makes a huge difference!
Also, this article gives me all the feels. And cues all the tears. We all get so wrapped up in our busy lives and need to take time to cherish these sweet moments! They are, of course, ever so fleeting!
Tyler can now feel her movements! She does have a tendency to get stage fright as soon as Tyler puts his hand on my belly but he finally was able to feel a big kick and the smile on his face was priceless. I’ve tried to get Liam to feel her moving as well but he has the attention span of a goldfish so he has yet to feel anything yet. However, I feel like he’s actually starting to get the fact that there is something in my belly (still not sure he knows it’s a baby though) and he’ll talk to my belly and rub it which is so sweet and makes me melt into a giant puddle of mush.
How I’m Feeling:
Large. I know I’m going to get much bigger but I feel like I’ve officially started to feel pregnant and am having some aches and pains that come with pregnancy. Oh and so out of breath! I don’t recall being this out of breath this early with Liam but holy moly I feel like I’m constantly trying to not sound like I just ran a marathon when I just walked up the stairs. And if I carry Liam up the stairs? Forget it. I did notice some minor swelling in my feet at the end of last week but I had been a little busier than normal at work and ran some errands at lunch so I just assume that’s what it was attributed to. As soon as I laid down on the couch and propped my feet up for a bit though the swelling went down. It really is hard to remember that you can’t do everything you used to even if you’re not 30+ weeks pregnant!
Speaking of aches and pains, I was experiencing some consistent and painful cramping that worried me since it went on for a good four days and was nothing like anything I experienced with Liam. After a trip to the doctor and everything looked normal, we just chalked it up to pregnancy aches and pains which was a very welcomed relief.
Other than my belly getting noticeably bigger, not a whole lot has changed since my last update. I gained 60lbs. when I was pregnant with Liam and had already gained a good 20+ pounds by this point. Thankfully, I haven’t gained nearly that much this go round which makes me happy to know I hopefully (key word here) won’t gain that much this time around because 60lbs. gained means 60lbs. to lose regardless of having an 11lb.+ baby.
I still haven’t noticed any (new) stretch marks but got most of the ones I got with Liam in the late 3rd trimester. My skin has been going crazy lately around my mouth and chin which makes me feel like I’m back in high school so that’s awesome. Hopefully that settles down soon.
I’ve been pretty good in the aversion department honestly. I still have random days where I’ll pack something for lunch and the thought of eating it disgusts me come lunch time but I haven’t had one particular food that I haven’t wanted at all. As for cravings, all I want is carbs. Carbs carbs carbs. And fruit. So much fruit. But then I’ll have a day of eating a lot of carbs and my body literally craves a salad and/or vegetables but I tend to do this pregnant or not. I guess it’s just called balance.
