But allergies are nothing compared to having a daily battle with asthma. Asthma is a respiratory condition that causes spasms, making it hard to breathe. It is often tied to allergies and appears as an allergic reaction, but it can also be general hypersensitivity to our environment. And there is a lot of medicine you can take to relieve your symptoms and make your life more comfortable, but there are also things you can do at home that will help you breathe easily.

Practice Breathing
This is something we can all benefit from, asthma or not, and something that is easily practiced at home. Practicing deep breathing in different poses will help you learn to control your airways, and it might even help you get more air when you are having an attack. If you feel like you can’t breathe in all the way, or if you can only take short breaths, take a moment, calm down and try several breathing exercises. Yoga is great for this because it positions your body in different ways and commands you to try and breathe deeply. The downward-facing dog, a pose where you are on your hands and feet with your hips high, facing the ground, will help with nasal constrictions and allow you to breathe while you are fully stretched out. If you are having trouble with your lungs, belly breathing will be your savior, so act like an opera singer and breathe through the belly. Caffeine will help open up your airways and allow you to breathe normally for up to two hours, which is plenty of time to get to an ER, find your inhaler or get a new one. Caffeinated tea works just as well. Make sure you sit upright and try to take slow, deep breaths. Don’t panic, because it will only make it worse. And of course, know all the symptoms of an asthma attack, so that you can recognize it and act accordingly.
