Edmonton, ABMay 21, 2019 | Swirltex was named the winner of the Edmonton Canadian Export Challenge Pitch Competition. Melanie McClaire, CEO of Swirltex won $2,500 and a trip to Toronto where she will compete head-to-head against six regional finalists for the grand prize of $25,000 and up to $100,000 in in-kind scaling support.

Alberta-based company Swirltex builds custom water treatment systems for a wide range of applications, such as wastewater, frac water treatment, dairy processing, mining wastewater, beverage clarification, and more. Swirltex’s unique membrane system separates solids and liquids based on buoyancy, allowing for higher production rates and higher quality effluent. The ability to manipulate the buoyancy of contaminants within the liquid stream allows Swirltex to treat a wide range of wastewater types that would otherwise not be re-usable. In addition, the system consumes a fraction of the energy compared to conventional water treatment methods.

“It’s amazing to be able to showcase what we are doing. I think our cleantech space resonates with Canadians, so we are really excited to have this amazing exposure,” said Melanie McClaire, CEO of Swirltex. “The Canadian Export Challenge is important because of both the educational component and the ability to connect with other entrepreneurs; the networking piece is important.”

“Seeing first-hand the innovations being started and scaled in Canada is transformative. Swirltex is doing amazing things in the water treatment industry and providing a useful technology that can greatly benefit Canada,” said Rachelle DeSorcy, Canadian Export Challenge Lead at Startup Canada. “We’re delighted to see Swirltex win the Edmonton Canadian Export Challenge Pitch Competition and know they will proudly represent Alberta entrepreneurs in Toronto in October at the Final Showdown.”

Presented by Startup Canada in collaboration with UPS Canada®, Export Development Canada, and the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, the Canadian Export Challenge in Edmonton showcased and supported more than 100 borderless businesses to go global.

McClaire is set to travel to Toronto to represent Alberta global companies in October during Small Business Week, where they will have the opportunity to pitch to win the grand prize and title as Canada’s 2019 Global Entrepreneur, receiving a host of support and funds.

Winnipeg, MBMay 10, 2019 | Yesterday, ECB Verdyol was named the winner of the Winnipeg Canadian Export Challenge Pitch Competition. CEO Mark Myrowich won $2,500 and a trip to Toronto where he will compete head-to-head against seven regional finalists for the grand prize of $25,000 and up to $100,000 in in-kind scaling support.

Manitoba-based company, ECB Verdyol is a soil amendment that supports the growth of newly seeded vegetation, and sustain poor soils caused by construction. Acting as a tool for erosion control, their product makes the subsoil act like topsoil to kick start the nutrient cycling and feed plants. Applications for this product are world wide and the impact of this technology will help reduce erosion, increase carbon storage and create pollinator corridors on linear civil construction projects. The product is manufactured in Manitoba from 100% Canadian inputs.

“The five other finalists, I did not know about. These connections made today from attending the Canadian Export Challenge will help all of us to understand what entrepreneurs are doing. I am so impressed by the great ideas that are in Manitoba, so I cannot imagine the rest of the ideas that we will see in the rest of Canada,” said Mark Myrowich, CEO of ECB Verdyol. “This event gives that platform for entrepreneurs to share our ideas, and what we are working on. And, it is hard to get that. You cannot always get that when you are a small entrepreneur – I really appreciate this opportunity.”

“We are thrilled to see ECB Verdyol take home the first pitch competition prize in Winnipeg,” said Rachelle DeSorcy, Canadian Export Challenge Lead, Startup Canada. “This is the type of innovation and company that has the potential to scale and create opportunities in Manitoba, across Canada, and ultimately, the world. We know Mark and his team will represent Manitoba with pride in Toronto in October.”

Presented by Startup Canada in collaboration with UPS Canada®, Export Development Canada, and the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, the Canadian Export Challenge in Winnipeg showcased and supported more than 100 borderless businesses to go global.

Myrowich is set to travel to Toronto to represent Manitoba global companies in October during Small Business Week, where they will have the opportunity to pitch to win the grand prize and title as Canada’s 2019 Global Entrepreneur, receiving a host of support and funds.

Follow the Canadian Export Challenge as it makes its other stops in Vancouver, Edmonton, Ottawa, Mississauga, Fredericton and Montreal during the Spring.
