As I’m sure you are aware, last Friday the United States raised its existing tariffs on $200B of Chinese manufactured goods from 10% to 25%. The United States Trade Representative also stated that tariffs will be raised on all goods imported from China.

These additional tariffs result in a substantial costing increase across our entire product line. When the 10% tariff was implemented last year, we did not push through a price increase as did most of our competitors. This round will now be the second price increase for most, representing combined increases between 17%-25%.

Effective May 17, 2019 Start Lighting will implement an overall price increase of 21%. All products will be included in this increase; however, the following exceptions will apply:

• Projects released with product in our warehouses and/or in production prior to the tariff implementation date
• Product in our warehouses that is not committed by Purchase Order
• All backorders will be filled at the price on the original Purchase Order
• Jobs quoted prior to the tariff increase will be evaluated individually

We continue to work with our component suppliers to identify ways in which we can lower costing, change components, or source from other countries.

We will continue to monitor the trade negotiations from both the United States and China. If the trade negotiations continue, and an agreement is reached removing or lowering the tariffs, we will adjust our prices accordingly.

We appreciate your business and implementing this increase is solely based on the tariffs imposed. If you have any questions regarding this increase or the imposition of the tariffs, please contact us!

October 26, 2018 – I am sure you are aware that the U.S. Trade Representative and the U.S. Department of Commerce has begun implementing tariffs on imported products from China. These tariffs went in to effect on Sept. 24, 2018. The tariffs have a direct impact on lighting; including lighting fixtures, lighting components and lighting controls. The tariff, known as Section 301 List 3, is designed to impose up to a 25% tax on products listed in the category. The implementation thus far has been at 10% on specific items. (https://ustr.gov/about-us/policy-offices/press-office/pressreleases/2018/september/ustr-finalizes-tariffs-200). We have intentionally delayed announcing any increases until it was truly a necessity.

Through discussions with clients, suppliers, and other industries, we’ve decided that we will not implement a unilateral price increase. We will instead assess a surcharge for the percentage of the government tariff we are required to pay at the point of entry. The surcharge will only be applied to the specific item codes that are identified on the published tariff list. We will leave our product pricing model as it is today, as we do not want to push a price increase through that doesn’t correct, if/when the tariffs are removed or adjusted.

All invoicing will list an additional surcharge line item that will correspond to the current rate of taxation. For items currently taxed at 7.5%, we will add a surcharge of 10% and items taxed at 25% we will add 20%. It is important that our clients understand that we are not profiting from the tariffs and we are participating in the cost absorption to the extent possible.

The Tariffs went into effect on the 24th of September, we will implement our surcharge beginning Nov 10, 2018. We hope that these tariffs will be temporary and when they are removed, we will eliminate the surcharges, and pricing thereafter will reflect our true cost of production as we have done in the past. In the interim, we will continue to update you with any information made available to us.

Looking to upgrade the lighting in your commercial lighting, industrial lighting, retail lighting, warehouse lighting and classroom lighting applications or perhaps in a garage, utility room, or basement with dropped ceilings?

START Lighting’s two by four (2’ x 4’) and two by two (2’ x 2’) volumetric troffers are a perfect solution. And since they have START’s Vari-Just technology matching colors and/or wattages is a snap. All you need to do is flick a switch to control the color or change the wattage.

For contractors and property managers, this is the technology, and the product, that ensures your job is done right every time and that there is no error in selecting the right product for the install. We’ve designed our Vari-Just products to provide you the flexibility to make changes on the jobsite.

Last month we shared why we came up with Vari-Just. The basic reason? We wanted to make it a fixture that made field installation simple.

And the simple also extends to inventory and ordering. Now property managers, contractors and distributors only need to order, or stock, one item that can do the job of many.

Solving the CCT Lamp Challenge

Coming from the electrical distribution channel, we started to look for ways to make our products more customer friendly and reduce the number of sku’s a distributor needed to stock.

Early on, START Lighting worked on the wide band solution, allowing either 120v or 277v incoming voltage with a single lamp. We got that to work, and were off to the races. Now distributors, contractors, and end-users can focus on stocking / ordering from three different lamps instead of six (three color temperatures for 120v and three for 277v) since our lamps could handle 120v AND 277v.

START Lighting Vari-Just VolumetricTroffer

We introduced our first Vari-Just Troffer earlier this year. Our goal was to replicate the success of the Vari-Just LED Panel and put the technology into a troffer. Our goal was one wattage option and three separate CCT’s (3000OK, 4000OK, 5000OK).

Just light the Vari-Just LED Panel, we designed the Vari-Just Volumetric Troffer to handle the various wattages and CCT’s by flipping a switch to save you money (inventory investment for distributors, time for contractors and a product comparable priced to single function products that are in the market.)

This is how we are expanding our Vari-JustTM platform. One switch for color and one for wattage. All to make lighting installs simple for you.

Literally flip two switches on the fixture, and you have what you need! A fixture that can be adapted to address six variations.

One switch controls wattage. One controls color temperature.

The switches are located on the driver housing and are preset prior to installation (either at the factory or adjusted by the contractor on-site before install).

For both contractors and distributors, the commonality of the function on the panels and the troffers is a pre-fab time saver. Simply set the switches accordingly and connect them to the system.

As 3000OK and 3500OK are close together on the temperature spectrum, we have always manufactured in 3000OK, 4000OK, 5000OK, with the tuning capabilities. At customer requests, we’ve now added a 3500OK option.

START Lighting Vari-Just Volumetric Troffer’s versatility of the adjustments makes our panels and troffers great in offices, schools, government facilities, and healthcare applications.

For distributors this makes product selection easier and can reduce inventory skus, hence reducing inventory investment.

For contractors this means always having the right panels and troffers on the job site. A simple flick of the switch ensures you have what you need, when you need it making jobs easier and faster to install … saving you time and money.

And since quality and creativity is our standard. There is no additional cost for this advanced functionality, making START’s Volumetric Troffer your cost-effective (material and labor) troffer solution.

Call us and ask us about your application.

Standardization Opportunity: Area/Shoebox Luminaire

We started to work with a facility group for the lighting needs for one of their commercial properties and the surrounding parking lots. As we went through the facilities, comments were made about the lack of uniformity among the lighting. The shoeboxes didn’t match from facility- to -facility, and the area lights did not resemble (in form and function) the shoeboxes. The area looked like each fixture was installed at a different time and the aesthetics did not reflect well on the facility. The facility management group and the developer wanted a contemporary style to match the building’s image.

We shared ideas, garnered more information regarding desired lighting needs including coloration, angle beam, mounting sources and more, and delivered a solution that addressed all of the client’s needs.

We used our shoebox format which features:

  • Hi-Efficiency Integral Driver
  • HI-Lumen SMD chipset / 50,000+ hour lifespan
  • IP65 Wet Location Rated
  • Available in: 100W / 200W / 300W with a color temperature of 5000K

We added multiple mounting options including photocells, short circuit caps and quick install mountings.

After that was completed, we used the same fixtures and added separate mounting options which could be secured to the ground and wash the sides of the buildings. The fixtures were shipped with each unique mounting affixed to the appropriate fixture for installation.

Engineered Solutions Opportunity: Silhouette Series

A national client was seeking specific functionality for a high-bay fixture.  They needed varying degrees of beam angles, motion sensors, 0-10v dimming and glass lenses.

They mentioned that they had been searching for these functions in a high bay but could not find a solution.  They had talked to multiple clients and then came to us due to our reputation for innovativeness and our ability to solve unique lighting challenges for them and others in the industry

We showed them the concept of our new Silhouette II High-Bay while it was in the design / engineering phase. After showing the concept, we discussed the ability to add the features they were looking for and deliver a working product in only three weeks.

The standard features of the Silhouette II High-Bay include:

  • High Efficiency Integrated Mean Well Driver
  • HI-LUMEN EMC 3030 chipset / 50,000+ hour lifespan
  • IP65 Wet Location Rated
  • INPUT POWER (W): 100W / 150W / 200W
  • LUMENS: 15,000 / 22,000 / 30,000
  • COLOR TEMPERATURE: 5000K

These fixtures replace existing 300 watt – 500 watt High Bays.

For them, we:

  • took our prototype, had custom glass inserts made, created three different beam angles and added PC or Aluminum lenses where needed.
  • modified the casting to accommodate for the motion sensing.
  • changed the driver to accommodate the 0-10v dimming.

And added one last touch, we produced the lens rings in their color, and had their name etched in.

Total time from concept to completion was three weeks.

New product, added options START delivered. For more information, check out our Engineered Lighting Solutions or, for more product information, view our catalog.

Do you remember the early days of LED? Back when the average CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) was +/- 1000o?   When you had to choose between Cool White or Warm White!

Or, if you are a distributor, you had to stock multiple manufacturers, and items from each manufacturer, to ensure you had all of the CCT’s that a supplier offered?

What this essentially meant was that there were different definitions of white? Not just the typical three of 3000OK, 4000OK and 5000OK but multiple versions that approximated each of these!

In all seriousness, when LED’s were new, we as an industry (albeit much smaller) wrestled with the wild swings in CCT AND at the time having to choose between 120v or 277v.

Providing customer with all of these choices and it was a wonder we could convince anyone to stock, specify, or sell the product let alone get a customer to buy the correct LED for their application and ensure they were satisfied. It became a running joke of “what is the color of light … yellow, white or shades of white?”

Vari-Just, CCT and Wattage Adjustment for Flat Panels

We introduced our first LED Flat Panel four years ago, and approached it the same way.  Our goal was one wattage option and three separate CCT’s (3000OK, 4000OK, 5000OK).

To be expected as the demand grew, so did the variation on wattage for rebates. We’d have an electric utility on the East Coast that would want a 30w 2×2 panel, and another on the West Coast that would want that same panel in 25w!

Once we saw the fluctuations in wattage requirements, and of course CCT, our engineering group looked at the multiple sku’s and colors we were producing and also considered the number of skus that a distributor had to stock to serve their customers.

We determined the best way to handle the various wattages and CCT’s was to flip the switch to save money (inventory investment for distributors, time for contractors and a product comparable priced to single function products that are in the market.)

This was what sparked the idea for our Vari-JustTM platform, which we launched earlier this year.

And since quality and creativity is our standard.  There is no additional cost for this advanced functionality.
