Hello, I'm Maddy from Toronto (Canada). I love everything to do with beauty, so I began my blog to capture it all! I started blogging about my nail art - which I turned into a business - Beyond the Nail! Now, I continue blogging about that, in addition to other beauty products, events I attend, and other lifestyle topics.
Oh boy, Toronto has been having some very odd weather this winter! It goes from being sunny and above 0°C to the next day being a snow storm and getting 5-10 cm of snow. You honestly can’t be prepared anymore. Do you put away your spring jacket and only have your winter ones on hand, or do you have a selection of jackets to choose from? I’m just cheap so I don’t have a ton of jackets to choose from, so I stick to having two jackets. Luckily for me, my boyfriend bought me a new jacket for Christmas, so I’ve been able to choose between 3 different styles.
Now, I did have a say in which jacket I wanted, and I chose the Maple Bomber with Fooler from Noize in black, size medium. I had seen this jacket on Jenelle from Nelle Creations (in grey) and I loved how it looked on her. I followed a couple of other bloggers that had Noize jackets, and I couldn’t stop thinking about these jackets, especially since I saw it all over my IG feed.
Noize is a cruelty-free brand and all their products are vegan. The Maple Bomber with Fooler has a detachable faux-fur hood and an interior fuller. The pockets are even lined with fleece to keep your hands warm if you forget to wear gloves. Trust me, this has been a pleasant surprise to me every time I put my hands in my pockets lol!
This jacket is definitely my go-to jacket this winter. It keeps me SO warm that I find myself unzipping it a bit. The only downside to this jacket is the hood. It’s way to big, or poorly designed. Unless you zip the jacket up all the way, put your hood on, and snap the buttons together.. the hood will definitely go over your head and cover your eyes. Walking around with fur in my eyes is not something I look forward to. I can only wear the hood if I do up my jacket all the way, which would only be suitable for extreme cold since this jacket holds in a lot of heat! Other than that, I love this jacket and I’m super happy with this purchase!
I purchased this jacket online at The Bay during boxing week, so after all discounts, I got it for around $110. You can also find it on Noize’s website.
Monday mornings are the worst. Okay, let’s be honest, any day that I have to wake up early is the worst! No matter how little or how much sleep I get, I always wake up absolutely drained. I don’t remember the last time I had a good night’s sleep. I wake up at least twice throughout the night – on my own, or from hearing people in my house. The day where I live on my own and don’t work on the weekends is what I can’t wait for! I would actually be able to sleep in and not be disturbed! It’s the little things in life that will make me happy haha.
Until the day comes where I can have a peaceful night, there are some ways that can help you wake up and get energized for the day ahead! Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t always follow these… I work 6 days a week (2 jobs), plus running this blog and my nail polish line so I don’t really get a full day to myself. If I do, it’s full of chores, grocery shopping, and going to the gym (I need to continue those New Year’s Resolutions after all!). Here are some great ways to start your mornings off right!
Get at least 8 Hours of Sleep
You definitely can’t start any morning off with a boost of energy if you didn’t get a good night’s sleep. Try to go to bed early so you can get a full 8 hours of sleep. You don’t want to fall asleep at work!
Don’t Hit the Snooze Button
I honestly have 4 alarms.. 1 on my clock and 3 on my phone. I don’t trust the snooze button, so multiple alarms work for me. However, this does NOT help me get my morning off right. Going back to sleep for a few extra minutes isn’t helping you in any way. Your quality of sleep after that won’t be great since your body knows you’ll have to wake up soon after. You’ll end up feeling more tired from going back to sleep than you would have if you just woke up from your first alarm. This is probably the hardest thing for me to actually follow.
Get Out of Bed
If you lay in bed every morning for 5-10 minutes scrolling on your phone before getting ready for the day, you need to STOP! This isn’t getting you any more energized than if you just fell back asleep for a couple more minutes. You need to get out of bed, open those curtains and let the sunlight shine in, and make your bed (that way you won’t be tempted to jump back in!)
Start a Routine
The first thing I do when I wake up, is head right for the bathroom. I go to the washroom, brush my teeth, wash my face. Those 3 little things definitely wake me up! By the time I get back to my bedroom to start doing my makeup, I’m already wide awake and have no real desire to go back into my bed. I do my hair and makeup for the day, get dressed, and head right to the kitchen. I pack my lunch for the day and make my breakfast. If you want to save some time, you can always do this the night before.
I wish I could say that I’m energized all the time since I follow these pretty well, but there are the random days when I go to sleep late, or really do press snooze on all 3 alarms… I find that I have more energy in the mornings when I have something fun and exciting to look forward to during the day. But honestly, a huge part in starting your mornings off right is getting enough sleep, and jumping right into your morning routine.
Happy National Pizza Day! Who knew there was such a thing? Well, to be honest I’m not that surprised. There is apparently a “day” for everything! I wouldn’t ever post anything about this type of thing, but I thought it was a perfect opportunity to share this photo of me at a bar from 2 years ago. It’s called The Addisons and it’s a bar in Toronto that is basically a giant house party! There are games and TV’s everywhere and has a comfy house feel to it. And did I mention they give out FREE pizza throughout the night? Well they did 2 years ago.. I haven’t been since because I’m old now and I’d much prefer a night in watching netflix in my sweats…
ANYWAYS, now that I’m in the mood for pizza.. I think I’ll order some for dinner tonight in honour of National Pizza Day! My go to order is cheese, pepperoni, and bacon with a creamy garlic dipping sauce on the side.
With the launch of the February Love Connection box from The Holo Hookup, I’ve had no time to even think of doing my nails. Luckily, I had done these dry brush nails over the Christmas holidays and forgot to post them. So now I have something to post!
This winter has been tough on my skin. I’m finding myself having to moisturize morning and night – with extra focus on my night routine. A richer cream that really soaks into my skin overnight really helps with all the dry skin I’ve been having. With that said, I was really excited to get an invite to the Dermalogica Chalet to experience their exclusive pop-up to showcase their newest UltraCalming products that soothe and calm sensitized skin.
Dermalogica’sUltraCalming products treat top concerns for those who have sensitive skin. Their #DermalogicaChalet event was held to showcase their two newest products – The Barrier Defense Booster(30 ml, $101 CDN), and their Calm Water Gel(50 ml, $65 CDN).
At the Dermalogica Chalet, we were able to get a 30 minute ProSkin facial, a 10 minute FaceFit mini treatment (using these new products), or complimentary face mapping. I chose to go for the ProSkin 30 because a free facial should never be turned down! Let me tell you, it was worth it!! The room was so comfy to be in (with a fake fire on a TV), and our chairs were lined with a heated blanket and a big furry throw over top. Definitely the comfiest facial I’ve ever had!
I’ll be reviewing The Barrier Defense Booster and Calm Water Gel after I’ve used it a couple times, so keep an eye out for a future post!
Be sure to check out the Dermalogica Chalet before it’s gone!

A couple of months ago, the ladies of The Holo Hookup emailed asking if Beyond the Nail would like to be featured in their February box. Since we want to grow our American presence, this was an amazing opportunity for us and we were delighted to join in – especially as the FIRST CANADIAN BRAND! The Holo Hookup is comprised of 3 brands (Glisten & Glow, Different Dimension and Cupcake Polish) and a 4th guest brand, who create a monthly pre-order exclusive (limited edition) box with 4 holographic nail polishes.
For the month of February, it only made sense to have the theme be about Love! Pre-orders for this box go live on Sunday January 21st at 9:00pm EST and end on Sunday January 28th at 9:00am EST.
Now let’s get to the polishes!
This is Smooches by Glisten & Glow. It’s a cherry red linear holographic polish kissed with holographic glitters. My swatch was done with one coat of PRO-FX – Complete 3 (base coat), two coats of Smooches, and one coat of Beyond – Base and Top Coat.
This is XOXO by Cupcake Polish. It’s a silver holographic polish with lots of iridescent flakes and pink shimmers. My swatch was done with one coat of PRO-FX – Complete 3 (base coat), three coats of XOXO, and one coat of Beyond – Base and Top Coat.
This is Forever by Different Dimension. It’s a bright pink linear holographic polish. My swatch was done with one coat of PRO-FX – Complete 3 (base coat), two coats of Forever, and one coat of Beyond – Base and Top Coat.
This is Wink by Beyond the Nail. It’s an ultra holographic linear polish in a violet base with a rose pink shimmer. My swatch was done with one coat of PRO-FX – Complete 3 (base coat), two coats of Wink, and one coat of Beyond – Base and Top Coat.
What do you think of these 4 limited edition polishes? Set your calendars and alarms for January 21st at 9:00pm, because that’s when this box goes LIVE! You only have a week to purchase this box, so don’t miss out!
I can’t believe it’s already 2018 – 2017 flew by. Nothing particularly stands out for me from this past year as far as exciting news or things that happened. I am hopeful 2018 will be better, especially since I have a trip planned in March to go to Bali with some of my girlfriends! (If you have any recommendations for things to do in Bali, let me know!)
For this New Years, I decided to go a bit over the top with my nails (shocking right?). For my index, middle, and ring fingers, I started by painting one coat of Beyond the Nail – Deep Black. While that was drying, I painted one coat, then sponged on another layer of Beyond the Nail – Noisemaker. For my index finger, I placed on a Star Shield Nail Guide and sponged over it with Beyond the Nail – Holographic Gold Microglitter. I peeled away the nail guide and was left with some glittery stars! On my middle finger, I did a glitter gradient using Beyond the Nail – Noisemaker. I used some Champagne Nail Decals on my ring finger, and took some individual glitters from Noisemaker to create the champagne bubbles! To finish this look, I added one coat of Beyond – Base and Top Coat.
The Barrier Defense Booster is a concentrated oil that soothes and moisturizes to restore balance to sensitive skin. It’s triple defense complex nourishes the skin, relieves dryness, and reinforces barrier integrity against future irritation. It’s also great at preventing skin irritation before it starts. The Calm Water Gel is unlike any moisturizer. It’s a gel that turns into a liquid once applied to your skin, but leaves it hydrated and soft. Using these products on their own work great, but applying them together give off maximum results!
I’ve been using both of these products right before bed, after I’ve washed my face. I would want to use it twice a day, but The Barrier Defense Booster is an oil and makes my skin look very oily! So it’s best to use at night so you skin can absorb all the great qualities it has to offer. However, I do use the Calm Water Gel in both the morning and night because it hydrates my face so well! These products also both smell like lavender – which is calming all by itself. After washing my face at night, I apply the Barrier Defense Booster and wait 5 minutes before applying the Calm Water Gel. My face has been breaking out lately (not because of these products!), but I’ve noticed that the spots haven’t been getting as red as they used to.
Although these products come at a hefty price [The Barrier Defense Booster $101 CDN & Calm Water Gel $65 CDN], I would still recommend getting them. A lot of each product goes a LONG way, so you’ll be using these for a while! My skin has been noticeably smoother and softer. I can’t say it’s helped the dryness, but it’s been really cold lately and I’ve been using my space heater to warm my bedroom up every night. So, I think it’s my own fault…
Would you try Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Products?
With Valentine’s Day 2 weeks away, it’s best to plan your date night out now! That way you can get your favourite restaurant or activity booked ahead of time and don’t have to worry about not being able to get a spot. Although it is cold at this time of the year (depending where you live), it’s still a nice idea to go out and do something for the night. It’s always a good to go out of your comfort zone once in a while and try something new – especially if you can do it with your partner! Since Valentine’s Day this year falls on a Wednesday, you can celebrate on the weekend before or after. And hey, these ideas are all great for date night no matter what the occasion!
10 Date Night Ideas for Valentine’s Day
1.Cook for/with each other. If going to fancy restaurants isn’t your thing, and you love cooking, then why not just do that? Cook a new meal together at home, or even check out cooking classes offered near you!
2. Go to a show! This could be as easy as planning a movie night, but have you ever considered a comedy show? I go at least two-three times a year and this is by far one of the things we look forward to the most. You can even watch a hypnosis show, a concert, or even a play!
3. Go for drinks at a swanky bar. You can go to the same old bar any night of the week. On Valentine’s Day, try checking out a new bar that has fancy cocktails! You can definitely look some up on Yelp (I do this for restaurants too!).
4. Play board games! Board game cafes are popping up all over the place now. If you live in or near the city, you can easily find one close by! This is also a very affordable option, and you can spend all night here playing a hundred different games. If you want company, you can even invite some other couple’s to play along!
5. Relax! Need I really say more? Honestly, forget about cooking, cleaning, or any other chores! Try booking a couple’s massage or facials. Nothing set’s the mood better than some pampering! You’ll be so relaxed and ready for dinner after this.
6. Staycation anyone? Book a hotel for a night just to get away! It doesn’t have to be super far from where you live, but a difference in scenery is always nice.
7. Go Skating/Rollerblading. When was the last time you actually did something like this with your partner? If you live in an area where you actually get snow, go skating outdoors while sipping on hot chocolate or stay indoors and go rollerblading! The music and hand-holding is just perfect!
8. Go Bowling! Have a competitive nature? Definitely go bowling. I go about every 2-3 months with my boyfriend and it’s just fun to make fun of each other at how bad we are. Or if one of us is on a lucky streak, we make a game of itself. For every strike, the other person has to follow a ‘rule’ that the striker chooses for the next round. An example would be to bowl with your eyes closed, or bowl with your opposite hand. It’s a lot of fun!
9. Watch a sports game. Are either of you a huge fan of a sports team? Check online ticket retailers (Ticket Master, StubHub, VividSeats, Kijiji) for tickets to games, or head to a sports bar and watch the game! Or watch the game at home, but make some appetizers for you both to share!
10. Take a Brewery Tour. I don’t drink beer at all, but I took my boyfriend on a tour for his birthday and it was actually great for both of us! We learned a lot about the process of making beer and saw how it all came together. Free samples were also included along the way (which my boyfriend happily took from me).
I usually just go out for dinner and watch a movie, but after seeing my whole list, I think I should take my own advice and do something I suggested lol! I think we’re actually going to go for dinner and watch a Toronto Raptor’s game the night before. Which is great for both of us
Every year it seems that the majority of people’s New Year’s Resolution revolves around eating healthy and losing weight. I’m no exception to this myself… I actually have it as my resolution this year! I’ve slowly been gaining more and more weight as each year passes by, and I’ve always thought to myself that it would be easy to lose weight. Well, boy was I wrong! I have a little kick in my butt this year though, because I am travelling to Bali in March and I want to at least feel comfortable while I’m there.
The first step in getting started on any resolution is SETTING YOUR GOAL!
I didn’t have an exact number that I wanted to weigh, but my goal before my vacation is to lose at least 10lbs. The easiest way that I found to stick to my New Year’s Resolution of eating healthier and losing weight is to track my meals and get a good exercise in! I thought just by making healthier choices and going to the gym by myself would’ve been good enough before, but it obviously wasn’t enough since I haven’t lost any weight. I figured with the New Year and a trip planned, it’s better now than never to get my butt in gear!
The second step to achieving your goal is to PUT IT INTO ACTION!
Now, I’ve always gone to the gym about twice a week, but never noticed any difference. Looking back at it, it’s probably because I only did cardio. Around the end of August, my friend suggested going to Orange Theory. I looked it up online and saw that it’s a heart rate based interval training, and they track your heart rate and display it on a huge screen in front of everyone. It was definitely intimidating, and I wanted nothing to do with this type of gym. My friend pushed me to go and even got me a free week trial. That was 5 months ago and I’m happy to say that I’m going at least twice a week! I love the classes because it pushes me to do workouts that I would never do on my own. It focuses Endurance, Strength and/or Power, and I just love the music they play!
Losing weight isn’t just about going to the gym. I’ve been going to Orange Theory twice a week since October and still haven’t seen a difference in my body. Obviously what I’m eating is a much bigger part as to why I wasn’t losing weight. I basically worked out in order to continue eating what I was and not gain more weight. Well, my eyes have opened up (& the realization that my trip is only getting closer!), so on January 1st I started to actually watch what I’m eating.
The next step, would be to TRACK YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS!
I downloaded MyFitnessPal and started logging my meals! I input my height, current weight, what my end goal was and how many pounds I wanted to lose a week. Based on those, I am aiming to eat 1200 calories a day. The average women eats around 1500-2000 calories a day, and in order for me to lose weight, I need to eat less. I’m not entirely changing what I’m eating, but how much I’m eating. I’m not depriving myself of certain foods – just making healthier choices! So I can still go out and get fast food, but I’d choose grilled chicken vs crispy chicken, or removing bread or fried foods, and only drinking water. The great thing about MyFitnessPal is that I can track my weight! Which you wouldn’t think is completely helpful, but it’s good for me to see how much I weighed on certain days.
I think the hardest part of this whole “process” is that I cut out pop. The caffeine withdrawals are giving me constant headaches! But whenever I need a fix, I just drink a Coke Zero. I don’t drink coffee or tea, so that’s not even an option for me. Going to the gym or cutting down my food intake hasn’t been a huge inconvenience for me. It’s definitely hardest during the first 2 weeks of course.
So far, in the first month I have lost 4lbs from sticking to a better gym routine and eating less but also healthier foods! I have seen so many other people around me lose weight from more drastic changes in their diets, but this seems to be working for me so far! Of course, not everyone can cut their calories down so low, so if you want to lose weight, I would highly suggest doing some research first and see what types of diets are for you! My vacation isn’t until mid March, so I’ve almost come half way to my goal!
How are you sticking to your New Year’s Resolution?
