My name is Jennifer. I grew up in the outskirts of Toronto where the ideal vision of beauty was something that I didn't possess. For 22 years, I stayed away from makeup because I didn't think it was "for me. I started this blog not only for Women of Color but for anyone that just wants to try something new. Sometimes you need someone to answer your questions and talk to.
This post is in partnership with buybuy BABY. All opinions here are my own.
As a new mom, I won’t lie preparing for the first baby is overwhelming. I can only imagine if I was having multiples! I’m a natural born planner. I’m basically the type of person that wants to be prepared for everything. I am currently 8 months into my journey and I can tell you babies require a lot and sometimes the smallest things can be overlooked. That’s why it’s always good to have a knowledgeable support system around you.
When it came to picking products for “Baby A-R”... I’m not going to lie - I didn’t know where to start. It’s almost like every day something new comes out and you debate … “Do I need that instead”. After speaking to my sister-in-law I found out about buybuy BABY. This is all before getting the opportunity to work with them.
buybuy Baby in Canada.
If you have never heard of buybuy BABY.. I want to be the first person to tell you that you NEED to check it out! Go in and create a registry! In my opinion, it’s totally ok to have multiple registries. Just don’t repeat the same product on both! But certain places just have a selection that you truly cannot get anywhere else.
Honestly, all you have to do is walk into one of their stores and you will truly be amazed at their selection, store cleanliness (super important) and support. Just remember these posts points as I go through my blog post.
My husband and I decided to register at their Woodbridge location. I literally had no idea what to expect. All I remember is walking in the doors and my husband looking at me like he knew I was going to go crazy in the store. One of the selling features for me (in this particular location) is once you walk in the doors- the buybuy BABY registry is to your right. You don’t have to go through the whole store looking for assistance. You literally walk in and 9 times out of 10 there is someone ready to assist you.
It's super easy to find the baby registry department in each store!
We went over the initial information would you need for your registry. Then we were given a price gun to scan items that we would like on our registry. I should also add that if you were overwhelmed like me they also gave you a checklist to help you out when choosing items. Or if a checklist was not enough- they offer someone from their staff to also walk around with you to share essentials/products that are commonly used. Sometimes you want to buy all shiny items in store but it’s always good to have somebody there asking you what your needs are to determine if that is even for you.
Updating my baby registry!
One thing to know about the store is that it’s broken up into different sections. You got an area that is totally dedicated to clothing! Please quote me on this! Probably some of the best clothing options that I’ve seen for little girls. Yes, I’m biased but you know!
So many little sleepers! Long sleeved, short sleeved... I could go on and on!
Perfect Canadian Summer baby outfit!
Then you have an area dedicated just to feeding. Then bath, baby furniture, swings, bedding, I could go on.
What an adorable nursery set up! That accent wall is my favourite.
The best part is I knew that if any of my family members or friends came in to buy a gift for me - it will be super easy for them to pick something off the list. Just find the area/product needed. And of course, I knew that there would definitely be staff members along the way who could help them with their search.
I'm obsessed with these 4moms swings!
My husband checking out the baby bag backpacks!
Lastly, at the end of your purchase, there’s also very cute DIY gift wrapping station! That’s totally free!
Another selling feature for new moms would be the goody bag you get after you finish your registry. Again I’m so new to this... So it was great getting products that I can go home and research. Also definitely a good reward after scanning all those products. Haha!
Giftbags for NEW Canadian moms!
On my second trip: I love the fact that the staff created a table for me with some essential must-haves! Isn't that so adorable! So helpful for any first-time moms out there looking for products to add to their registry.
The staff did a great job setting up the 6 month baby essentials table for me!
Overall my experience was really good! Never once did I feel overwhelmed in the store because there was A LOT of staff to assist me. Plus the prices are pretty good. If you see a product out there at another retailer for a cheaper price... guess what they price match!!!
Checking out the Uppababy Baby Strollers!
Have you tried any of the baby products that I showed in the pictures above?
- How do you feel about all these new foundations that are now coming out for darker woman of colour? - Do you feel like it’s too late? - Do you feel like this is the perfect time?
For me, I’m just happy to be included. I know that sounds super corny but I’m happy that I can branch out try other brands and also help you save a bit of money in the process.
This is such a overdue post. I started writing it with three foundations but stopped. Mostly because I got my hands on a fourth Maybelline foundation. Which you know always changes everything! If you’re looking for a drugstore option try Maybelline Superstay Full Coverage foundation ($14.99 CAN).
What you should know...
-16 shades in the line from Porcelain (fair porcelain) to deep brown (truffle).
-Can easily be found in the drug store or online.
-Perfect for anyone who craves full coverage foundation.
-Matte finish after application.
- Long lasting wear!
Why would I recommend it?
For me, there is no event that requires 24 hours wear (a girl needs her beauty sleep) but I appreciate the option. Nothing worst than going to an event- going into the mirror to check yourself and seeing that your foundation has shifted off your face. You definitely will not get that with this foundation! Depending on your skin type you might have to powder a bit or use a oil blotter but it’s not high maintenance.
Lastly, I think that there’s a pretty decent colour range here. I remember when I couldn’t find anything darker than 355 coconut in-stores. Now there are a few more additions in the line! Since it’s summer, I’m mixing 360 mocha and drops of 362 truffle to find a shade that works best for me. I understand mixing is not ideal for everyone but being able to mix two foundations is still cheaper than me going to go buy one from the department store (in most cases). I’m still winning *files nails*.
Check out the four colours I got below:
356 Warm Coconut
360 Mocha + 362 Truffle
Have you tried the Maybelline Super Stay 24H Foundation yet?
I’m not gonna lie when you’re pregnant you kinda have your own system going on. You know what you can eat, you know what smells you can tolerate and what products you need to get you through the day. Without one... a meltdown can occur! Trust me.. I can attest to it!
If you follow me on Instagram you will see that I went on a babymoon to Viamede Resorts (located in North Kawartha). It was the perfect getaway from my busy life! More on that soon (a lot of pictures). I want to share with you all products that got me through my extended stay.
I brought Schmidt's Deodorant ($14.99 CAN). I made the switch to natural deodorant about a year and a half ago. The whole natural deodorant world is not is easy as you might think. You can't just to just switch and it all work out. You have to go through a trial and error to determine what works with your body chemistry. When testing it's probably good to do when you don’t have to be around so many people... haha. Also I should add that being pregnant it is very important for me to use a deodorant that didn’t have a lot of chemicals or additives in it. I got the baking soda free formula- I found out I'm allergic to baking soda the hard way. You don’t have to apply a lot to get you through your day. There are some deodorants that you can try put on at 10am and by 1pm- you pray that you’re not going to be in a room full of people. This was perfect and it totally held up in the Canadian “wilderness”.
Gotta have something for the bump!
I’ve been using a few things throughout my journey and in the third trimester- I decided to use Palmer's Tummy Butter ($7.99 CAN). Love it because it’s free of mineral oil and parabens. You basically apply it three times a day or as often as possible. In a circular motion on to stretch mark prone areas a.k.a. your tummy. There is actually more items in the line as well that I could’ve taken but I thought what product could I take that would do everything I needed and this was it!
What about my lips though?!
This totally was a no-brainer for me. I had to have the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask ($24.00 CAN)** with me because when you’re pregnant it is crazy how dehydrated you can get quickly. I forgot to put it on the first night and totally paid the price in the morning. But the best thing about this product (for me at least) once I woke up - I applied the lip mask. Then did my face routine. Got dressed and by the time I was ready to head out the door and wiped my lips. All the dead skin was gone! The are very few products that I will rave about. This is it!
Stay hydrated girl!
Since I knew that I would be pretty covered up for the full weekend (I was afraid of mosquito bites and stuff like that). I needed a product that was light that I could wear without feeling it on my skin! I decided to bring The Body Shop's Spa of the world Thai MAKRUT lime firming oil ($24.00 CAN)** with me. I’m not gonna lie, I’m very sensitive with scents but I don’t know what it is about this product... it’s so pleasant and light! Some products that have lime in it are super overbearing and will probably give me a headache. But not this! After coming out of shower you can massage it on damp skin until it’s fully absorbed. I love it! I’m actually thinking about putting it in my hospital bag as well.
And your face?
This one was very important because I decided to have a makeup free babymoon. I still had to make sure my face looked somewhat decent ...haha! For that I chose the Arbonne Intelligence Nourishing Facial Oil ($76.00 CAN) **. I'm actually on my second bottle. I chose this oil because it's super light weight. All you need is 2-3 drops. I'm NOT a face oil person but this product is REALLy good.
I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for this!
Seeing sunlight past 6:30pm! It's the small things :)
Although this wasn't the worst Canadian winter. It was still quite draining.... AND I feel like it's going to take a while to snap out of it.
This is definitely where self-care has to come in and boost my morale.
First place I'm starting is with my skin!
Palmer’s sent over their new Coconut Oil Formula products back in the beginning of the year. I don't know about you but the brand has been a staple in my house for years. The old formula was great but this new one is a total upgrade. Really what your skin needs!
Why do you need this product? Coconut Oil: Moisturizing/softening Monoï Oil: Hydratation Sweet Almond Oil: Soothes skin **Plus free of harsh chemicals.
Looking for something light?
Try the Palmer's Coconut Oil Body Oil
The Body Oil is one of the lighter formulas.
But don't under estimate it! It will still hydrate and replenish your skin's moisture.
This would be be great for vacations!
Also provides 24 hour moisture.
Looking for something just right?
Try the Palmer's Coconut Oil Body Lotion
This is the perfect all-over-body lotion. Not too thick or too light.
Can be worn daily and provides lots of moisture!
I forgot to add each product is infused with Tiaré flower petals.
Looking for something rich?
Try the Palmer's Coconut Oil Body Cream
This is their richest formula. I mean this can be used to soften the roughest most unruly skin.
We all know someone who needs this...haha!
You can also layer this product.
Apply Palmer's Coconut Oil Body Oil before you use Coconut Oil Body Cream for maximum absorption.
Reminder Palmer's has: No Parabens. No Phthalates. No Mineral Oil. No Gluten. No Sulfates. No Dyes.
Do want to win you own set of three Palmer's Coconut Oil products?
This Blog has been around in some of the best and worst times of my life. The best times of course being that I started it when I just finished college ad needed something to occupy me. I had a great boyfriend at the time (my husband). Also I also got my first REAL job (that I still have now).
This was all at the end of 2008/beginning of 2009- Fast forward to now where does this blog has seen me be a fiancé and get married. And now on the way to becoming a mommy.... YES! You heard me!
A BABY will be here soon!
There are many people who have literally followed me along each milestone and I am always going to be extremely grateful. THIS is just as a heads up because I will be posting quite a bit of baby content on my blog as well.
I want to be able to tell MY story! And share relevant products that work for me/my baby. Not every mom out there is going to be someone who you identify with. I want to have the opportunity to be able to share my experience.... which is a unique! I'm Canadian. I was born here. But I was also born to Jamaican parents. So that's also apart of my experience.
With all of that being said -I would never give up on beauty. That’s always going to be my first love. But I’m a big believer that your Blog should evolve with you. I understand the content might not be for everybody. I would love it if you decided to still support me as I go through this next journey with you guys. Again for my loyal followers thank you so much for always reading/commenting connecting with me on social media.
Guys! Make Up For Ever is at it again! I can’t keep up with all these great products that are coming out this year. I was lucky to get my hands on three of them!! Look at them in their glory and let me know which one is your favourite in the comments section!
There are 121 vivid shades and five different finishes.
You get pigmented eye shadows that you can mix and match. Plus 12 hour wear.
Why you need them?
I can’t be the only one who is tired of all the streaky and powdery shadows on the market. I can assure you that this ISN’T it at all! These are super smooth and blendable. The unique part is that you get to choose your palette! Do you it based on your mood, occasion or whatever! Choose your palette size: 2, 3, 4 and 6.
I was gifted a three pan palette PLUS three awesome colours!
FYI: These images are taken directly from an exclusive MUFE event that I attended a while back.
Let me tell you now… this summer is going to be ALL about highlighters. Highlighting every angle of your body and face. Sooo be ready! This baby is for my girls who love highlighting BUT don’t want the sparkle. After using this product you get a soft and subtle sheen. 4 different finishes.
Why you need them? You need to be glowing this summer! Plus it’s created with mother-of-pearl to give you an all-over glow. My favourite way to use it is in my foundation! My colour: 50 - golden copper.
I won’t lie, this one is a TRUE gem. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked around with several products in my makeup bag. Just taking up space and being unnecessary. Now you can get one cream palette that is going to do all of that! Which I might add- can fit in to the palm of your hands.
Now you can camouflage discolouration and imperfections easily!
Why you need one?
These palettes get rid of unwanted darkness, redness, and dull areas.
Best part is that they can be used in combination with other Make Up For Ever products.
There are six palettes:
20 Very Fair
50 Dark (Me)
Would you be interested in a product like this?
Let me start off my stating that I'm not employed by any social media platform like Facebook BUT if there is a deal online.. be sure that I'll find it! *TWO SNAPS*
The rise of Facebook groups.
Did you know that your next outfit might be on facebook? Hear me out!
Have you ever checked out the Marketplace or a FB clothing group?
It's the perfect opportunity for you to buy and sell items to update your wardrobe. The items that you get there are both new/gently used. Plus you can negotiate price and connect with some really cool people. Interested?
Here tips for picking up or selling your item.
Always go to a busy place to buy or sell: Try a Tim Hortons or mall. If you live on the subway line. I would even suggest that because you can hop on and hop off without having to pay an extra fee. Never go to anyone's house ALONE without taking a buddy with you.... And even then I would still tell you to stay away from that.
Always examine the item before you pay.PLUS always read the listing fully. I had a situation where I was selling an item that was in storage for a bit..... so it had a few marks on the bottom. The person who wanted the box told their significant other to pick it up BUT did not tell them about the blemishes. He didn't take it and ended up wasting my TIME!
As a buyer- Don't lowball. It's cool to negotiate but if the person is not interested in YOUR "new price" please don't get mad.
As a seller: Read the full rules of the group. Bump your post up as much as you can. It's a gentle reminder that the item is still available.
As a seller: If possible, meet the buyer half way: If you really want to sell this might be your best alternative!
Have you sold/bought anything on a social network before?
I love discovering new brands. Especially when they’re going to be in places that I frequent. Shopper’s Drug Mart just got an exclusive new brand called Nude by Nature. They’re Australia's #1 Mineral Makeup brand.
A few months back, I had the opportunity to try out the line in person. Swatch and test out products which worked for my skin tone. I really liked the lip products!
I’ve swatched and shared them below:
• Nude by Nature Creamy Matte Lipstick ($23)
There are 10 colours. What you get: A creamy non-drying matte. Contains natural ingredients such as Mango Seed Butter, Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E and the native Australian Kakadu Plum. Colour shown below in Aubergine:

I was asked by one of my good friends what would be my top ten Island honeymoon essentials for an island vacation. I had a LONG list of items that you would usually forget or overlook when packing. I thought this would be perfect for the blog since I haven’t done a honeymoon essential post since 2015.
If you’re prepping for your honeymoon and stumbled on this post - get a piece of paper out and let’s go. Or just screenshot. Haha! Whatever works.
Bug Spray Honestly right now Zika is still a thing and before you go anywhere depending on your family plan it’s always best to check the location to see how high the threat of Zika is. With that being said it’s logical that bug spray will be on your list.
Sunscreen Very important for all skin tones. I find that darker skinned individuals forgo sunscreen completely and then end up coming back in complete disarray about how burnt they got on vacay. Wait.. I’m talking about myself... kinda sorta. On my most recent vacation to Jamaica with my husband we stayed outside for hours. Have you been to Negril?? It’s so dreamy! We stayed outside for hours. We used sunscreen but one thing I can admit that we did not do was re-apply. But I can only imagine what would have happened if we didn’t have it!!!!
Waterproof camera One of the best purchases we did from Best Buy. The shots we got are so fun! Probably some of my favourites.
Plastic bags Just to separate your dirty from your clean clothes. You laugh but trust me! It will be the biggest help come time for laundry.
Anti-Nausea pills This doesn't even need an explanation but when you and your boo get sick from food positioning.... You will thank me. I’m not wishing it upon you BUT it’s just a simple precaution.
Cough syrup and sinus medicine Been there done that. Climbed a waterfall high of sinus medication once. I have the pics to prove it lol.
Lysol wipes This place will be your home for a week. It’s important that it’s clean as possible.
Clutch Just something to hold the essentials. Room keys, lip colour, mirror... etc
Insulated Cup If your trying to do the whole resort thing your own cup is key. I’m alway cautious of the cups at the resort.
Socks/sneakers Sooo useful if you decide to use a resort gym or go on an excursion.
I know I'm totally getting annoying talking about my lash extension experience.... But I really miss them! Currently.. saving money is the goal. So things will have to be sacrificed. There is a lot that I wish I knew before I became so addicted.
Number one: Super corny but how "easy" it makes your life. I would literally just slap on concealer, lipgloss and go about my day and feel glamorous. No lie... you would honestly feel camera ready for EVERY/ANY occasion.
Listen when they tell you that can’t get them wet in the first 48 hours. I always try to get them done a bit before I go on vacation- so that it doesn't affect my beach plans. In other words, on day 4 of vacation I want my lashes still look even.
Not all curl patterns will work for you. I loved a mix of a C and D curl. I have extremely curly lashes and some blends didn't work on me at all. It's a bit of trail and error in the beginning.
Number four: The initial appointment feels like it will take forever. Expect to sit in the chair for up to two hours when you get your first set. After that can be 45 minutes to an hour for refills
Now how naked you could feel when they come off. I did lashes from 2015 to 2017 with very little breaks. I haven't found a mascara that can give me that look!
Not everyone is a good lash tech. Please do your research. Read every review and look for pictures. My last lash tech was horrible. By day 7 my lashes were falling out and patchy... I took a chance and NEVER again.
Is there anything I missed? Do you have any tips for lash extension wearers?
