My name is Jennifer. I grew up in the outskirts of Toronto where the ideal vision of beauty was something that I didn't possess. For 22 years, I stayed away from makeup because I didn't think it was "for me. I started this blog not only for Women of Color but for anyone that just wants to try something new. Sometimes you need someone to answer your questions and talk to.
Last month, I attended the latest fragrance launch by the Mugler brand called Aura Mugler. The event space was transformed into a serene forest escape. There were stations setup throughout the venue that invited attendees to try out Aura Mugler, it's associated products, have faux tattoos of the bottle applied and even have your makeup touched up! It was a great event that allowed attendees to immerse themselves into the scent.
Talk about the appearance Aura Mugler is the latest fragrance release by Mugler. Aura is a visually shaped heart jewel. This fragrance is presented in a transparent emerald green heart shaped bottle that is sculpted in a way that adds texture and makes light reflect off it as if it were a sparkling piece of jewellery. Thierry Mugler helped to develop the concept of the bottle and what makes it unique is how the heart of the bottle is mounted with the letter "M"; there is a silver band at the top of the bottle in the shape of an "M" that not only adds a decorative element but also showcases the Mugler name discreetly.
The notes in the fragrance The main notes are: Tiger liana, rhubarb leaf, orange blossom, bourbon vanilla and wolfwood.
The smell Aura Mugler is the scent of art. It has been developed to take your senses on a bold journey that eventually settles down into a seductive feminine scent. Described as an experience of 3 bold journeys (Oriental, Botanical and Carnal).
Where it would be good to wear it I would suggest wearing this scent on a night out; on a date, or out for a fun night out with friends. I would not suggest wearing this in an office setting or under hot weather.
Personal thoughts on the scent As a fragrance lover, the more I wear Aura Mugler the more, I've fallen in love with it! It's a unique fragrance and I'm happy to have added it to my collection. What intrigues me the most about Aura is how it does start off overpowering with a slight masculine feel to it and it then settles into the most sensual scent I've had to date. It's in your face without being in your face. The wolfwood helps to ground all the sweet and tangy scents into a perfume that is delicate yet bold and feminine at the same time.
You can purchase Aura Mugler fragrances in various sizes: 30ml -$85.00 CDN 50ml - $115.00 CDN 90ml - $150.00 CDN
Also what's great about this release is the additional products featuring the scent: Mugler Aura Body Lotion 200ml - $65.00 CDN Mugler Aura Shower Milk 200ml - $55.00 CDN
This statement is going to be weird to some people... but as a woman of colour I was very afraid of red lipsticks. I remember when I was experimenting and my mom used to tell me that those were not her favourite colours on me. If I listened to her I would’ve probably stopped wearing them but you know my social media family out there always told me that it looked great! So I continued to try more colours.
Let me start off by saying liquid lipsticks over traditional lipsticks any day. This was my first time trying anything from Smashbox in a while (like 2010).
So I was excited to try out the Always on liquid lipstick in Bawse ($28.00 CAN) ** (which I received in a goodie bag from a blog event in 2017).
Liquid matte formula
Smashbox Always on liquid lipstick in Bawse swatch
Bawse is a deep red that is perfect for a night out. It glides on smoothly- it doesn't drag or apply streaky like some liquid lipsticks. When applies it DOES NOT MOVE! This would have been the perfect colour for me to get married in! I applied it in a few layer for the swatch above and let me tell you. It took forever to come off. I used a wipe- oil based remover- soap (in that order) to get it off. Which isn't an issue to me because I love & need the staying power!
Another pro is the doe foot applicator. It takes a while to get the hang of liquid lipstick application in the beginning. Flashbacks to me unintentionally over lining my lips like a mad woman (smh). An applicator like this allows you to fill in your lips without that hassle.
I hope that you guys of all recovered from the holiday madness. I’m trying my best to get better from a cold (sad face). I have a question for you! How do you transition your clothes to be workable for all seasons? For example, you’re not going to wear a skirt in -40 below weather... Yes that was actually the weather here two weeks ago. Canadian problems!
Here are four key pieces everyone should have in their closet
Long Kimono Dusters
These are literally something that I wear 24/7- 365 days. They’re comfortable and can be found almost anywhere. You can get them in a variety of sleeve types! I have no sleeves, short sleeves, 3/4 sleeves and of course long sleeved. You can easily dress it up by wearing your favourite little black dress or even a one-piece jumper. Appropriate for all seasons! Check out Nordstrom for some unique pattern pieces like this one.
I wear leather leggings like a uniform. They can be worn from January all the way to December. I would gravitate to these instead of wearing regular cotton tights on a date or girls night. Dynamite has these sexy leather leggings that would be the perfect addition to my closet. What would I wear to complete my ideal look? A tunic paired with some thigh high boots. It’s classy and appropriate all year round.
Long tunic dresses
Tights or no tights? It all depends on the season! Summer time is a pants free zone hahaha! My rule is that it should always be right above your knees. Wintertime add the tights and boots. So you don’t freeze to death! I always opt for two kinds: The button down and the t-shirt material type. I always use a belt if it’s kind of boxy. Boohoo is where I get all my tunics.
Yup! You read that correctly. We’re talking Girlfriend jeans NOT boyfriend jeans. What’s the difference? They’re made for you! Just with a bit more style and comfort. I love mine with a few with rips and detailing. It’s perfect to incorporate some of the items that we talked about earlier if it gets chilly- Add a Kimoto duster with a white tank! Garage has a few great indigo Girlfriend jeans that you should check out! From sizes 00-15!
I truly cannot believe how quickly 2017 has come and gone. I’m not sure if it was the best year beauty wise but I did find some gems along the way. Please let me know if you have tried any of these products below!
All of these products deserve the "MySpicedLife: Best of 2017" stamp of approval.
Arbonne Rescue & Renew Detox Oil ($50 CAN)*
At the Arbonne head office, I had the opportunity to pick three products to try. The detox oil was attention grabber. I personally thought that it smelled like grapefruit but there is grape seed, sesame seed, argan plus essential oils in it. It’s perfect for the winter months. Right after I get out of the shower, I lather it on and let it soak in. I’m already almost halfway done this bottle and I have a back up ready to go. Pixi Glow Tonic To-Go ($22 CAN)* This product has 5% glycolic acid. There are four things your skin can really benefit from using this product: tone, brighten, hydrate and plus gently exfoliate. Since it's just pads, it's perfect for travelling as well. This is actually my second time using the product. I stumbled upon it again in a goodie bag from a Shoppers Drug Mart Holiday event and fell in love. After I wash my face, I use a microfibre cloth to dry and then I apply these pads. I’ve had no breakouts in a WHLE. What more could a girl ask for!
Reversa Cleansing Micellar Solution ($23 CAN)* I stopped doing a lash extensions in October 2017 and now I'm back to wearing mascara. With mascara just washing your face and going to bed doesn’t work for me. I'll still have mascara on my lashes and get it on the pillow. Now I just use the Reversa micellar solution on a cotton pad to loosen up and remove my mascara. As you can see I have less than half left! Why does it belong in my Best of Beauty list? It's mild and extremely gentle. Plus the pump gives me the perfect amount of product each time. After I do this I still do skincare routine. This product is awesome and Canadian made!
Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask ($28 CAN) * As a chronic matte lip wearer, I can experience dryness on the regular. It’s truly annoying! But honestly... it’s apart of the game. I apply this at night and by morning, I see the dead skin stripping right off! Laneige has been a favourite brand of mine for a while and I’m happy that I got reacquainted with them again in 2017. This product is a LIFE saver. Anytime someone complains that they’re having problems with their lips, I always suggest this. My favourite part is the spatula so you don’t contaminate the product, in case you’re having any personal lip issues.
Phyto PhytoElixir Intense Nutrition Mask ($53 CAN)* This is been one of my hair care secrets for a while. I absolutely love this brand and I truly think I this is the reason why I don’t get a lot of breakage when I do protective styles. I think it's due to the moisture and reinforcement my hair gets after using these masks. It's REALLY rich. To be honest, I can admit that Phyto should be getting more attention on the blog. I won’t even lie to you guys, I constantly forget to share them and whenever I remember it’s completely done. That is the sign of a great product!
Fenty Beauty- Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation ($42 CAN) Rihanna really came through and delivered!! I’m putting this on the list because she really got a lot of people who don’t even wear foundation/beauty products to start wearing foundation/beauty products. As a black woman it’s still very hard to find a brand that works for you. Whether it be your undertones or skin texture. I’ve had times where I’ve used brand for a few months and then after a while it starts to look funny on me. But I am happy that they have 40 shades on the spectrum. For reference, I'm a 440. I love the finish and how this foundation looks on my skin. Definitely a recommend for someone with an oily or normal skin type.
It's 2018, time for a new contributor on the blog. I love having contributors because:

Why did you want to contribute to Spiced Beauty? Spiced Beauty is the leading platform of beauty product and lifestyle reviews and advice for women. It's one of the first and only woman of colour blogs that I was introduced to here in Toronto, Canada when I found out about the world of blogging. I'm honoured to be able to add my opinion of beauty to this great platform!
How did you get into beauty? I got into beauty at a very young age. It all started in elementary school when I went into my mother's things and found a bottle of red glitter polish. From then on I discovered eye shadow and lipstick! Thankfully my family has always been supportive of my love for beauty and have allowed me to play around with various makeup products from a very young age.
Favourite Canadian Beauty Brand? MAC Cosmetics! MAC was the first beauty company that I found that had foundation colours that matched me perfectly! Not only that, they are constantly creating products that can be used for all skin tones. I love how they not only provide makeup for everyday use but also for days when you want to get glam or creative with your makeup.
Liquid, pencil or gel eye liners? Liquid eye liners. I love how they provide the drama I'm looking for on my eyes and last all day.
Tips to get the perfect eyeliner? Take your time and work in sections.
What is one beauty trick that you want to perfect? Putting on false eyelashes! I have no clue how to apply them.
Lipsticks or Gloss? Lipstick! My go-to shade is a bold matte red shade.

“Good” skin comes at a cost – no surprises there. Skincare is one of those things where we have so many options and hacks to help get us to that flawless face. At the same time, it can also get confusing when trying to figure out what is worth the splurge.
The general consensus is that for the following items (providing you have no major skin care concerns), you can scale back and save on as they contain the same basic ingredients that will still get you the results you need: Cleansers Toners Day moisturizers with SPF Lip balms Eye creams
When it comes to serums, night creams and face masks, we should expect to spend a few more dollars as these products are meant to penetrate deeper into the skin and are packed with highly concentrated ingredients that target your skincare concerns right at the source. I decided to put this to the test with a few pricey products. Although I am a skincare fanatic, I was skeptical on whether these products would be worth the spend.
Although moisturizer is one of those items you can save on, I suffer from the occasional breakout and have some acne scarring so I needed a moisturizer with a few added benefits that can treat my skin at the same time. That being said, this moisturizer is definitely worth the spend!!!
Tata Harper focuses on 100% natural, non-toxic and organic anti-aging skincare. The products are freshly batched and bottled on a farm in Vermont. This particular moisturizer is formulated to be lightweight and designed to target blemish and acne-prone skin. Because it is quite pricey, I use this moisturizer only a few times a week. I wouldn’t expect the average person to use this everyday and night because it is quite pricey however if I could afford it, I totally would! The formula is indeed very lightweight which is good for someone with oily skin like me. I have noticed a difference in the brightness of my skin since incorporating this into my routine. Bonus – it smells amazing! Super light, fresh and citrusy. I will caution that if you live in colder climate, for the winter you will need something richer for a daytime moisturizer.
2) Dr. Roebuck's Ultimate Hydrating Serum $80.00 (CDN)
I am a serum lover/junkie. I have a few that I love because they REALLY work for me so I was skeptical to add another to the mix. However I was pleasantly surprised with this find. Particularly in a season when the air is super drying I found this to be key in really adding and keeping the moisture in my skin. I noticed a difference in how my skin looked and felt when I used a moisturizer on its own, without the Hydrating Serum.
The formula contains hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and various peptides that all do wonders for hydrating and plumping the skin. With this product, a little goes a very long way so you do not need a ton of product to see results. A few drops, once a day is what I used and I was able to see a noticeable difference in a week. That being said, the price tag is justifiable and this product is definitely worth the splurge as one bottle can last a least a couple of months.
Reserva’s Anti-Spot Brightening Serum is essentially a vitamin C treatment. It was designed to visibly reduce the appearance of brown spots and imperfections. It also has a booster effect on other anti-aging formulations. In other words, it strengthens their benefits because of its antioxidant power.
I did not notice any noticeable differences in skin tone and the reduction of certain spots.
It could be because I had not using it for long enough nor did I suffer from major discolouration to see a visible change. By no means do I believe that the product does not work. Given that this product a bit more on the affordable side, I would make this spend, particularly if you’re in the market for something to target pigmentation/discolouration.
To give all products a fair and honest shot,
I did test them independent of each other to avoid any biases.
Are there any products you have splurged on that are totally worth it? Or is there
something that you’re using that is a complete steal that you’d like to share?
On this day in 2014, I woke up to write and discovered my blog was gone! A bit of a back story, someone tried to hack my blogger account. So as a precaution, blogger put my account on hold. I had to jump through hoops to get it back... That day I vowed to upgrade my passwords and become more conscious what I post online.
There are 4 tips to keep you cyber safe as an influencer.
Secure your password for your social accounts.
Try not to make your passwords things like your dog's/spouse/car/child name. Uhmmm.. I'm PRETTY sure you share all that info on your social platforms- It makes it super easy to hack when you talk about it 24/7. Switch it UP! Make it something your mama couldn't even crack!!! Add exclamation points and capital letters between the words for a stronger password.
Switch it up!
This is more for your social media accounts but change your password every 3-6 months. I use a few third party apps on my SM accounts. If you do a change every 3-6 months not only do you protect your accounts but you also clean up apps that you DON'T need.
Back that *hit UP!
Computers crash ALL the time. I've lost so many important pictures that I will NEVER get back. A dropbox account has been one of the best things I've invested in. Once I take a pictures on my camera- I upload them to my phone and they automatically get uploaded to dropbox as well. I always have a back up!
Meet in public places!
I've met hundreds of people off the net from my blog/SM mostly at events. Just a precaution... that I hope everyone knows. If your going to meet someone for the first time meet them in a public place. Try Tim Hortons, a mall or even the library. Just until you get comfortable with them.
Back to the point... We're over sharers but we still need to be safe and protect our ish!
Some of these tips might be self explanatory BUT we all need a refresher at the beginning of the year.
After a good girls night or a fun date night to muster up the energy to take off your make up is non-existent. In my younger days, I do remember nights not taking off my make up. Please don’t judge me! Thankfully, I had amazing skin that time so it did not impact me.
There are many ways to fully get your make up off which unfortunately do take up time... but honestly it’s worth it. One thing, I will never give up on is make up wipes. But I'm going to be honest, that there are some wipes that do not fully do the job in one wipe. Those CHEAP ones that are ALWAYS on SALE! Stay away from them. Most of the time, those cheaper wipes only get off the first layer of make up. What about your sunscreen, primer, moisturizer or serum? There is still residue left over. Don't leave me- wet a rag and wipe your face.
So here is where double cleansing comes into play...
It really gets that "grime" that you might see when you look in the mirror. For my cleaning option #1: I really like Dermalogica Precleanse ($58.00 CAN).
It literally melts away the makeup from your skin. After using it my skin feels instantly soft.
You apply it to dry skin.
Add some water.
Massages it in a bit.
And wash off.
I sometimes use a cloth to get everything off and then I go to step #2 to my foaming cleanser.
I’m really new to this one but TheFaceShop Rice Bran Foaming Cleanser ($17.00 CAN) is REALLY nice! The best part about it is that it has a little bit of exfoliating factor in there.
I know this is not something that can be done every day or maybe should be done every day depending on your skin type but definitely keep it in mind.
Oh, it’s time ladies! This is probably one of my favourite times of year for make up. My issue is always when to buy. One of the cons about gift sets/advent calendars is that if it really popular... it sells out quick! When I was new to the make up game, I would always wait until it was closer to Christmas to actually go out and purchase the item. Guess what? It was gone by then.
I finally had the opportunity to get two Beauty Advent for the first time this year!
The Winter Wonderland advent calendar from Sephora Collection ($56 CAN)
was the first one I opened.
For 24 days you get a new surprise daily! Products range from a beauty accessory, make up or a bath product. This is the perfect chance to get a taste of some Sephora brand products that you haven't discovered yet.
So far, I have unboxed some interesting products on my Instagram Stories!
Some highlights: On day 2, I got a Fingertip Eyeliner in 01 Smart Black.
So $56 for Advent Calendar not in your budget? Try a budget friendly version from Hard Candy ($9.97 CAN). Hard Candy: 12 days of lip -This is all lips! Which is perfect for someone like me who LOVES minis!
They’re totally shareable and perfect as testers. Not sure if a finish or texture is going to work for you. Get this ASAP!
Did you get any Advent Calendars this year?
