Just before heading back to work from maternity leave, my husband and I wanted to take a two week trip over to London, England with our 11 month old son, Eli. While planning, I thought it would be best to fly overnight so Eli could sleep for most of the flight and he did. He slept for the whole 6 hours in my lap. He was very comfortable, but I will say, I was not. We ended up getting seats in the middle of the plane and wished we had seats on the sides. I think I would have been more comfortable if I had the window to lean against if needed. But with that all to say, it was still a good flight. On the flight back home, it was a little different. It was a morning flight and I knew that I would have to find things to keep Eli busy. He did have a nap but when he was awake, we walked around the plane and played with the few toys I had. The toys we brought we from the company Fatbrain Toys. These toys can be suctioned to the trays in front of you. Eli was going at them for a quite a bit of time, they kept him entertained. We also had snacks. DO NOT FORGET THE SNACKS!! Lol. Those helped a lot.
Once in London, we took transit a lot so did not have to worry about a car seat. The only time we needed a car seat was when travelling to and from the airport. In those cases, we rented a taxi that provided them. Getting around London by transit was so easy and very very reliable. I carried Eli in my Ergobaby carrier the whole trip. We did not want to bring a stroller as we did not want the challenge of having to lift it up and down the transit line. It worked out great and my husband and I took turns carrying him. We were able to zip in and out of areas quick because we had Eli attached to us. The only downside to the carrier is that we got hot fast. With all the walking and the heat (yes, London had a heatwave last year), our body temperature warmed up pretty quickly. We had to just make sure that we were hydrated and that Eli was not overheating. We did so by finding cool places to rest and drinking lots of water.
For this trip, I made sure to keep an open mind as I had no idea how Eli would handle it. We planned our outings and if halfway through our day we noticed he needed a break, we just stopped. For the most part he did very well and we were able to keep to our plans for the day. He is definitely a travel baby and we are happy about that!
Get a Ergobaby
A few mornings ago Ava woke up at 5:30am. Most the time (when she wakes up early) we give her a pacifier and she’ll go right back to bed. But this totally was not the case.
Is there anything more heartbreaking then a teething baby? We feed them, we diaper them, we care for them but try as we might, it seems like there is nothing we can do to relieve the pain of their new teeth coming in.
I won’t lie. We’re a little late on the teething bandwagon. When most of my Canadian mommy blogger friends were having trouble with teething - literally nothing was going on here. Now it hit us like a sack of bricks. Especially at odd times in the night/early morning.
Of course I want to do everything I can for my baby to help ease the pain, but I don't want to give her took much medicine. Especially ones that are filled with ingredients I can't even pronounce.
I had to go to my trusty friend for answers: GOOGLE! I literally googled every mom-tested, baby-approved natural remedies for teething. Here are a few that might work for you.
ICE Giving your baby ice probably seems risky, but you can freeze many teething rings and other teething aids easily. When we have an ache, an ice pack is sometimes our first thought, so why not give your baby the same consideration? I have one of those water filled teething rings that I just pop into the freezer for a few hours. Whenever she starts getting fussy in the day I give it to her to play with. At first, she was really confused like.... what am I supposed to do with it...haha! After putting it into her mouth a few times she kind of now grasps the concept. The only issue is that it does end up on the floor quite a few times so I do have to wash it a lot.
TEA Another, less obvious method that we also use for soothing ourselves naturally is tea. I will admit this is one that I have not tried yet. But just thought I would share in case there’s someone out there who want to try. Apparently a spoonful of caffeine-free tea can be just as soothing for our little ones as it is for us after a long day. One tea that kept on popping up was chamomile. Chamomile has been used as a pain relief remedy for thousands of years. So I can kinda see how it could/would help.
JEWELRY Lastly, there is always the often-debated method of amber jewelry. Another one that I haven’t personally used my daughter. But I do I see a lot of babies wearing them regularly. In December 2018 the FDA released a warning after receiving reports of children choking on beads that broke off. I also read about a story regarding a 18-month-old who was strangled to death by an amber necklace during a nap. I don’t know how that could happen but either way a complete tragedy. I personally think that when people use them on their little one use precautions and supervise.
Overall, I think that I’m also going to invest in some great chew toys for my daughter. If you stumbled on my page looking for some wisdom... consider these natural remedies next time your baby is having trouble with terrible teething.
I’m no stranger to the brand. I actually received a massive box of their wipes from my BabiesRUs registry. It honestly helped me get through the first two months of life with baby Ava. A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to try out a few other products from the line.
The line is ideal for moms like me who don't want to use any products which might be an allergen on their children. From the very beginning I knew that I only wanted to use mostly Vegan brands on Ava.
Aleva Naturals is...
Harsh Chemicals Free
Calendula Multi-Purpose Cream ($12.99 CAN) Ideal for dry, chapped or eczema-prone skin. Main Ingredients:
Organic Aloe Vera
I noticed that Ava had a few patches of extra dry skin on the back of her legs. It was bothering me because everything I was using on her previously wasn't working. The formula was non-greasy but still provided hydration. I won't lie I wasn't super confident in this product because it didn't seem "THICK". But boy was I fooled. I wish I took before and afters.
Soothing Comfort Chest Rub ($9.99 CAN) Ideal for babies 3 months and older with stuffy noses. Main Ingredients:
Organic Shea Butter
Natural Almond Oil
In the past few weeks we only had one bad stuffy nose night. It was horrible! Resulting in her crying for hours at midnight. This was the perfect product to add to our routine. We got rid of her stuffy nose, we massaged the rub into her chest and then turned on the humidifier.
I tried two wipes from Aleva Naturals. Since I used the "regular wipes" I already knew what to expect but was totally unsure if the sensitive version would do the trick! But both wipes can easily hold solids and won't tear when using. I know that someone out there is thinking why is this information important - let me tell you. Nothing is worst than cleaning a baby with a weak wipe...haha. One awesome fact is that these are eco-friendly and biodegradable in 21 days!
Main Ingredients-Regular Bamboo Baby wipes ($5.99 CAN):
Organic Aloe Vera
Natural Tea Tree Oil
Main Ingredients- Baby Bamboo Sensitive wipes ($5.99 CAN):
Organic Shea Butter
Organic Olive Oil
Last but not least the Bamboo Baby Diapers($16.99 CAN)!
My daughter drinks a lot of fluids. Her diapers are usually heavy from peeing. My main concern was leaking. I'm here to report that we didn't have ONE leak. Since we're on solids now.. we do not have blowouts. So unfortunately I can't talk about... that but it held in the “solid” with no accidents. I love that they have a 3-line wetness indicator that changes from yellow to green when baby is wet.
These diapers are no frills to me and that's totally okay.
They're unscented - no characters.
Just a unbleached diaper with the logo.
I did notice that the outside wasn't super soft but that didn't matter to me because that part isn't touching her skin. Inside was fine.
The diaper is made out of unbleached bamboo fibers.
I hope in the future they offer bigger boxes for purchase.
Size NB-1 4-9 lbs
Size 2 6-17 lbs
Size 3 13-24 lbs
Size 4 20-30 lbs
Are you interested in trying out these product for yourself?
I have a question for you... When your skin is going through a hormonal episode "Do you switch up your skin care?" I do! Recently I was gifted a few items from The Face Shop Dr. Belmeur line to incorporate into my skin care routine.
I tried various The Face Shop products through my blog in the past.
But I was wondering who is Dr. Belmeur?
"A premium derma-cosmetic skincare line that uses plant-based ingredients that have similar components to our skin. Dermatologically tested, this line provides gentle skincare and barrier-enhancing solution to common skin problems. The Clarifying collection offers a custom-made formula that helps improve oily and acne-prone skin."
I was given a box which was Combo/Oily Skin. Although I am not Combo/Oily skin daily. I have one week out of the month when my skin goes insane. I tried these products out for a few weeks to test them out. This is a 5 step routine. I chose to do it at night... which is totally hard when your fighting sleep but worth it.
What I received:
- Clarifying Bubble Foam Cleanser
- Clarifying Toner
- Clarifying Moisturizer
-Advanced Cica Peptide Ampoule
- Clarifying Spot Plaster Bands
I have two main notables in the line which I'm obsessed with! First is the Clarifying Bubble Foam Cleanser. I sometimes find that foam cleansers can make my skin feel/look dry after drying my face. Thankfully this one didn’t do that and it also contains salicylic acid!
Secondly, the spot plaster bands. These can be put into a pimple to protect skin against external contamination. Plus it contains tea tree leaf oil. I won’t lie... I am a skin picker(at times) so these help a lot! I remember back in the day when plaster bands use like mini bandaids and were SUPER obvious. Especially on darker skin! These are perfect. Whenever I rub my hands over them- I swear I can’t even tell they’re on.
You suspect your little one is sick. There is nothing more stressful than a sick baby.
It's even worst because it's not possible for them to tell us what's wrong.
If it could only be so easy!
The first time Ava Rose was a little feverish, I was instantly paralyzed with worry. Is this serious? Or am I just imagining that she's warmer than normal? After calling Telehealth, they instructed me to take her temperature. Thankfully she was okay but it totally could have been a serious situation.
The day after I googled instructions on "How to take a baby's temperature at multiple months" because I totally wanted to be prepared for my next freak out.
**Please contact your family doctor for accurate information**
There are two options. I know the first one is exactly what you don't want to hear, but most doctors say that the best way to gauge a newborn baby's temperature is through a rectal thermometer. Luckily, rectal thermometers can be easily purchased and used. Plus they don't hurt your baby at all! Second option is under the arm! Less invasive BUT may be more realistic for you if your baby just doesn't like to sit still.
Six Months Old
In addition to using an under arm thermometer... experts say that it's important to wait until your child is at least 6 months old to use a digital ear thermometer. Why the ear? The ear canal shares the same blood supply as the brain’s temperature control center.
Nine Months Old
Once your baby is a little older, they may be able to sit still for longer. At this stage, a temporal artery thermometer may come in handy. It sounds intense, but it's actually just a long name for a forehead thermometer that takes your baby's temp by pressing against the temporal artery.
Out of all of these methods, I would say that testing from the ear would be my favourite.
Remember, taking your child's temperature won't tell you what type of illness they have all by itself. If your baby has a fever it is important to call your doctor straight away!
I wasn’t always a micellar water fan. Back in the day I’d use it but hated how I still felt a light waxy film on my face from it. Or how much it burned my eyes!!
Well several formulations later...It’s a important part of my double cleanse routine.
My routine has changed but a lot of the products I wear now are long-lasting and smudge-proof. Cleanser and water doesn’t always get it all off in one shot.
Even when I’m exhausted... I don’t skip steps because at this age I can’t risk pimples.
Here are some Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water products - I was recently gifted to take my make up removal techniques to the next level.
Not sure what these products do?
Long lasting concealers/foundations wipe off with a micellar wipes.
Liner on your lash line removes best with a q-tip and micellar water.
Cream shadow might come off easily with micellar water soaked pads.
THOUGHTS? These products are pretty accessible (can be found at your local drug store) and effective. If I had to rank them.. Number one would be the wipes. Wipes are always one of my must haves! I won’t go into detail but you can find out about my love of easy makeup removal in my old posts. Then tied for second place would would be the eye pads and water. Love the concept of the pre-soaked pads! But they’re for eye use only. I also love the water but if your out of store bought pads- I feel that the using toilet paper isn’t good enough... haha! Let me add that reusable cotton pads are a thing now. So I should invest in some!
Here are five reasons why you need micellar water in your life!
It can be a one step product- If your makeup is light enough ex.just brows- You could get away with eliminating one step at night.
Cleanses/removes makeup with one step- If you are effective you can remove a high percentage of makeup before you wash your face!
Can be used on all areas of the face- Depending on what the packaging says- sometimes you can use it on eyes, lips and face.
Does NOT dry out your face- It's not like using a high alcohol based product.
Suitable for sensitive eyes.
Have you tried these products before?
Looking back, I can say I did quite well prepping for Ava. How? By talking to other moms and looking at baby registry must haves. I can admit not EVERYTHING is necessary but some things are essential.
I’m always asked what are my must haves...
Now that Ava is 7 months I can tell u what made my transition to motherhood smooth.
Diaper Caddy Why? I wanted everything at my fingers when diaper changing. I never wanted to have to leave her on the change table to have to run and get anything. How did it ease your new mom concerns? I always knew what my supply was. I never was out of wipes/diapers/body lotion/diaper cream. Plus it also helped my husband stay organized as well. How long did I use it? This is something that I will continue to use for a WHILE. As long as Ava is still in diapers. Would you purchase again? I'm 50/50 for only one reason. I do feel like if you hit it (walking past it or whatever) with enough force. It will crack and eventually break. But I love how simple it as and cost effective- so I'm torn.
Rocking chair Why? Probably because I seen it in EVERY nursery inspiration picture and I really loved the look. Plus it looked like a great product for bonding throughout the years. How did it ease your new mom concerns? It actually helped my husband and I establish a bedtime routine for baby girl. Also whenever she was cranky we would rock in it and sing to her to calm her down. It worked every time. How long did I use it? This is something that we will continue to use for a WHILE. I hope to see her someday reading her books in it when she's older. Would you purchase again? Yes and I could definitely recommend it. I also totally understand why it's in every nursery.
Playard Why? This was a gift and I wasn't sure I needed/wanted it but it exceeded my expectations. It was perfect when family came over and wanted to see the baby. There was also a basinet and a change table included. All my diaper changes downstairs could be done without any pain on my back. How did it ease your new mom concerns? When people came over she didn't have to be always held. She could lie down in the playard and chill. Also the mesh siding was good for naps! How long did I use it? This is something that we will continue to use for a WHILE. Probably until she is 1. We can sit her in there with her toys to play while we are downstairs. Would you purchase again? Yes and I would definitely recommend it. I have brought it to my parents house for when she sleeps over plus I could also take it on vacation!
Swing Why? It was always at the top of the nursery essentials list. Also in my prenatal class- we were told that a swing can remind a baby of what it was like in the womb. Very calming! How did it ease your new mom concerns? It was always like an extra pair of hands. I was always able to cook or clean with the baby within my sight. Plus if she was cranky and needed a bit more sleep but didn't want to sleep in her crib. She would take mini naps in the swing. How long did I use it? She's currently 7 months and still using it. We will retire it at 9 months. It still calms her down so it's still super helpful. Would you purchase again? As a girl mom-yes! It was definitely a conversation starter. But there are currently other swings on the market that go up to a higher weight class- that I would purchase for baby number 2.
HALO® Bassinest Why?
I wasn't ready to put such a little baby in a crib already. I wanted something easy to manoeuvre around, breathable and modern. How did it ease your new mom concerns? I was able to see Ava. Some other basinets are made out of cloth. So I'd physically have to get up to see her. Also since it was mesh- I knew she would be able to breathe easily if she moved towards ir. How long did I use it? Ava stayed in there until 3 months. I only took her out because: A) She's really tall B) She moves around in her sleep. Would you purchase again? Yes! I'd probably go for the upgraded version. I think that having a nightlight, vibration and soothing sounds would make a HUGE difference.
Would you believe me if I told you that I'm getting rid of most of my beauty stash.
As a new mom, I want a fresh start.
I was holding on to some products past their shelf life.
Let's be honest A LOT of us are!
I'm excited for my new venture and discovering products again!
With that being said. I have to rebuild- my beauty collection.
Here are three products that you should add to your list this year because I'm adding more to mine!
Clarins Joli Rouge Velvet in Guava
In 2018, I seen a lot of glosses being popular.
Which is awesome.... but I think that matte lipsticks are making a comeback for 2019.
What do I look for in a GOOD matte lipstick?
-I need one that’s not too dry.
No one needs one settling in the middle of their lips.
-Preferably transfer free.
I know that’s not always the case (usually with liquid matte lipsticks) but if this is available... it’s kind of a added bonus.
Just because it's expensive doesn’t mean that it is going to work for you.
Now testing the Clarins Joli Rouge Velvet ($29.00 CAN)
Clarins Joli Rouge Velvet in Guava is the middle swatch on Dark skin! Joli Rouge original formula on top and Joli Rouge Brillant on bottom.
This is a winner because it doesn't feel dry on my lips.
Plus it's light and applies really well!
You can get one colour in three finishes: Original, Velvet (V) & Brilliant (S)
There are so many bomb highlighters on the market. I’ve seen some $10 highlighters which would make you break your neck to test them. Also $50+ ones that are so pretty that you couldn’t leave in store *coughs FENTY*. All jokes aside- drugstore highlighters are making a come back! This is a perfect time to highlight Covergirl. They are now Leaping Bunny certified by Cruelty Free International which is awesome for my cruelty free ONLY girlies. If you don't know what that means...COVERGIRL does not test on animals!
One Cover Girl TruBlend Super Stunner Highlighting Palette ($11.99 CAN) caught my eye immediately.
Cover Girl TruBlend Super Stunner Highlighting Palette in 510- Glowing up
Theses trio can be blended together or worn alone.
Cover Girl TruBlend Super Stunner Highlighting Palette on Dark Skin 510- Glowing up swatches from Left to Right
AFFORDABLE SKIN CARE There is no reason why you can't achieve great skin on a budget. I can't even tell you how much I've spend in the past 5 years on my skin. Some hits.. some misses.
New to Canada is THE INKEY LIST. Which can be found in Shopper's Drug Mart (in-store & online).
THE INKEY LIST skin care is now in Canada
Everything in the line is under $15 CAN. Simple skin care options are back. These products are super specific for your skin care needs. For example: Caffeine ($9.99 CAN) is an under-eye serum which helps to reduce puffiness and dark circles.
Is there anything that you want to see me review specifically from the line? Check back in on my progress within the next 3 months.
Oh my! How behind are we?!? I apologize. So much has been going on! I have been in school, working and taking care of the baby. Plus being wife! Can’t forget that one. I legit have no time for anything but that needs to change. This is the update from her being four months to six months old.
She can say dada.
She’s been saying that since she was four months old.
She loves to roll back-and-forth.
She’s working on sitting up without any assistance.
She’s good at doing it for a few seconds and then she gets excited and wants the clap but doesn’t have any balance to do so. So she ends up falling over.
She also loves singing and dancing.
I know I’m going to have a little diva on my hands. I truly can’t believe that in July I’m going to be planning her first birthday party.
Here are a two products which have been making my life a lot easier with Ava:
Where would I be without my rocking chair?!
This makes putting the baby down at night so much easier. After my husband feeds her then rocks her- 90% of the time she will fall asleep. I won’t lie.. take a few rocks in that chair and you will fall asleep too. This one is from walmart!
I’m always adding new bottles to my list and the Comotomo bottles are some of my favourites. These bottles are being compared to "breastfeeding in a bottle". The first two bottles I purchased at buybuyBaby. I was gifted a medium flow bottle. My breastfeeding journey has been rocky but I can truly say these bottles honestly helped my daughter latch better. I’m not 100% sure if it was the shape of the bottle but allowing her to open her mouth more totally helped.
The silicone is heat resistant. I can place them in the sterilizer with no issue.
Last year, my hair was in it's best condition! It was strong, long, healthy and so full of body. Why? Those prenatal pills that I took did wonders. After the baby, I maintained a good amount of hair but I did notice that I did have some fall out. Which I'm trying to grow back on my own. I was gifted with some hair care products to try out this winter.
