In January 2018, Health Canada announced two major changes to the physical security requirements for licensed producers licensed under the ACMPR, effective immediately. This is in part due to Health Canada’s plans to streamline the application process for cannabis production licenses so they may be issued more quickly.

Importantly, the vault storage security requirements were adjusted to include physical barriers and an intrusion detection system with 24/7 visual monitoring and recording. Persons entering and exiting the storage area must be recorded and access must be restricted to those who require it to perform their jobs.

Secondly, video surveillance requirements in the cannabis growing rooms is no longer required. However, all access points to these rooms must continue to be under 24/7 video surveillance, monitoring, and recording.

The remainder of the physical security requirements for licensed producers still remain, including:

  • Perimeter security
  • Intrusion detection systems, visual monitorings, recordings, access control, and physical barriers inside the facility
  • Inventory control at all stages of the growing and retail process

These are welcome changes for many individuals and companies looking to apply for a cannabis producer license with the government. However, the physical security requirements for licensed producers are still robust and require the right security company to provide them.

Too often here at Sonitrol Canada we see businesses installing a new security system when they open and then neglecting to update it with newer technology, sometimes for years or even decades. Often, businesses only upgrade their systems after a security threat when they realize their old technology just isn’t cutting it anymore.

With recent changes in security technology over the past few years, the entire landscape of business security systems has changed. In addition to that, the way that criminals attack businesses has changed – internal theft has grown and people have found many ways to bypass traditional security systems. While all businesses are at risk of internal theft and other security threats, some industries in particular are slower to upgrade which can cause preventable security issues in the long term.

Should You Update Your Security System?

Below are some examples of industries and businesses that absolutely must ensure their security systems are up to date.

Licensed Producers

With changing laws around marijuana production and sales happening in 2018 in Canada, the security system requirements for licensed producers and dispensaries are some of the most robust out of any industry. The Canadian federal government has the detailed security requirements listed in the AMPR, and includes items like perimeter security, robust access control, ULC Listed fire protection, and more. Notably, Verified Response security systems are a requirement for Licensed Producers as well.

Without the most up-to-date security technology and integrated systems, Licensed Producers won’t be able to operate. Anyone looking to pursue a career or start a business in this industry needs the best of the best for their licensed producer security system.

Retail Stores

One problem that many retail business owners encounter is that they install security cameras and CCTV as a precaution and deterrent against theft, and don’t take advantage of other types of security systems. Retail security systems should include an automatic access control system for different levels of employees to prevent internal theft. Too many stores still make use of old fashioned keys and locks that can be easily broken into. An upgrade from the standard security cameras and CCTV that retail stores can benefit from is Verified Response audio or video detection to reduce or completely eliminate false alarms, as these happen often at retail storefronts.

Commercial Offices

Office and commercial security systems often include a variety of systems, like access control, intrusion systems, and security cameras. One area that absolutely must be included in any commercial alarm system is Verified Response. False alarms triggered by a misfired wire, an accident, or a non-threat can be verified immediately by monitoring personnel. Without Verified Response, the authorities are called and there are more actions and processes that need to be taken. Having an intrusion system and camera system are key for office security, but Verified Response is an update that must be undertaken as well.

Restaurants

Restaurants are similar to retail stores in that they often use old fashioned keys and locks for their access control. In a business that may have lots of cash on hand, a liquor room, and food storage, an automated access control system is essential. This, paired with a video verification system like Sonavision allows you to monitor all the areas of your restaurant at all times and keep only the most trusted people in your valuable areas.

Ready to Update Your Security System?

If you work for or own a business that has aging security systems, you need to upgrade today. The security system landscape is constantly changing, and the past few years have seen immense growth in both robust security systems and in criminals trying to find ways around them. To keep your business safe, you must keep all your integrated security systems up to date and ensure you’re using the latest security technology.

Access control systems in businesses are some of the most important security features a building can have. They keep properties, employees, visitors, and assets safer than using old fashioned key locks. However, simply installing an access control system for your business is not enough to protect it.

There are a variety of added safety measures that you and your security company can work towards achieving to ensure that your access control systems are working as efficiently as possible. This helps keep your business safe and secure and means you’re getting the best bang for your buck too.

Sonitrol Canada has some tips for ensuring that you’re managing your access control system effectively.

Multiple Access Levels

Does your sales team need access to the IT room? Do the part time contractors need access to your supply room? Do the interns need access to the manufacturing floor? Choosing who can access what areas of your business requires multiple access levels. Make sure you don’t just one have key card to allow entry in to any room – keep information and employees protected by ensuring only the necessary employees have access to the areas that they need for their jobs.

Automatic Removal

When an employee quits or is transferred, ensure that their key card is automatically updated, reassigned, or deactivated. You can change their security access or remove it completely depending on your needs – make sure you take advantage of this so no cards get left unnoticed and an ex-employee can still gain access to your business.

Don’t Share Passes or Codes

As a business manager or supervisor, it’s imperative that your policies stress how important it is to keep codes and keycards private. Each person is given their own codes and cards for a reason and they should not share them with each other. Keep policies in place, like extra or emergency cards, in case an employee forgets their badge, to help ensure employees follow these rules.

Monitor Activity

With apps like mySonitrol, you can monitor the activity of key readers and door locks. You can see which employees are trying to access restricted areas, see if key cards or codes should be deactivated, and find any flaws in your system if you monitor it regularly. This also ensures that everything in your access control system will be as up to date as possible. Don’t just set it and forget it!

Integrated With Other Security Systems

Sonitrol’s access control systems for business can be integrated with CCTV, intrusion detection, and fire alarm systems for all-around protection. Whatever security solution you need, Sonitrol can find a customized security solution and access control system to suit it.

Laws around medical and recreational marijuana across Canada have been changing in recent years with this culminating in the legalization of recreational marijuana this year. This has been an area of growing political and business interest in 2017 and this will only continue into the new year. An estimate by the CIBC World Markets estates that once fully legalized, marijuana sales are expected to reach $10 billion annually. That’s a staggering number that businesses and the market need to adjust to.

With the legalization of medical and recreational marijuana comes the legislation and regulations under which businesses must operate. These Licensed Producers, i.e. businesses that are legally entitled to sell medical marijuana, must follow the regulations set out by the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations Act (ACMPR). This act includes the physical security regulations that Licensed Producers must abide by.

Sonitrol Canada provides the robust physical security for dispensaries and licensed producers necessary to meet these regulations. With our fire protection, alarm systems, and video security for dispensaries, you know that you’re adhering to Canadian legislation in your business.

What Are the Licensed Producer Security Requirements?

There are a variety of guidelines and requirements by Health Canada about the security required by Licensed Producers. With changes coming to the laws in 2018, these regulations are more important than ever as more businesses apply to become Licensed Producers.

Licensed Producers’ sites must have physical barriers to prevent unauthorized access, which may include signage, doors, access control systems, sensors, and intrusion detection systems.

Access Control Systems

A dispensary of any kind selling marijuana must be designed in a way to prevent unauthorized access. The best way to guarantee this is with a robust access control system. Whether with security codes, badges, or keys, product access must be restricted to comply with the laws. Only designated employees who have passed specific screenings and interviews should be able to access controlled substances.

Video Monitoring

In Licensed Producer facilities, intrusion detection and visual recording devices must be monitored at all times by professionals. In the event of an alarm being triggered or a break-in, the proper steps must be taken to prevent the unauthorized access. Verified Response security systems are the solution to this.

Intrusion Detection

An intrusion detection system around the perimeter of the facility is required by law. It can also be helpful to have additional intrusion detection within the facility around various sensitive areas. This intrusion detection must be monitored and keep intrusion information accessible to the authorities.

This isn’t an exhaustive list or description. You can find the full physical security measures required by the Government of Canada here.
