Gudrun Sjödén’s new bright and beautiful collection is designed to make a lasting impression on you and the planet

One of Scandinavia’s most successful and distinctive designers, Gudrun Sjödén is known for creating clothes that are colourful, comfortable and extremely hard-wearing. As she travels the world, her ‘slow fashion’ is inspired by the places she goes, the people she meets and her desire to be sustainable.

Gudrun’s new summer collection is a riot of vibrant shades and patterns, reminiscent of her time spent on the magical island of Mallorca. Deep blues and gorgeous greens sit side-by-side, with flashes of fuchsia pink and sunny yellow. Exotic flowers, palm leaves and cacti take centre-stage, celebrating the bold and surrealist world of artist Joan Miró.

The gorgeous flowing shapes and bold patterns that have become her trademark are also very much evident in her May capsule collection. This time, Gudrun uses more muted shades – with some monotone pieces for those who like to keep things simple.

Scandi design with a green soul

Sustainability runs through every fibre of Gudrun’s clothes. Everything is made of organic cotton, linen and lyocell, and is designed to be worn until it’s worn out. And only suppliers who share this ethos make the grade.

Explore the many wonderful colours of Gudrun’s world and discover a timeless piece that will stay with you for many years to come.

“I believe that hard-wearing clothes in timeless designs that you can wear until they are worn out, have the least environmental impact.”

See the new collections at gudrunsjoden.com or visit the beautiful London concept store at 65–67 Monmouth Street WC2H 9DG

We’re already firm believers that crocheting and relaxation go hand in hand, which is why we absolutely LOVE the new ‘Mindful Crochet’ book by Emma Leith (super-star designer and regular contributor to Simply Crochet Magazine).

Emma’s new book features 35 crochet patterns which have been specially designed to include strong elements of repetition, requiring you to engage your attention and just focus on being ‘in the moment’ – the key to mindfulness and relaxation. Emma shows how qualities such as following a pattern, keeping your yarn on the hook, counting stitches, and remembering which colours to use can become a form of mindfulness practice, bringing you peace, calm, and a greater sense of well-being.

The designs all show off Emma’s creative skills with colour and texture, with a range of projects that you can make for yourself or your home, as well as others that have been deigned to be given as gifts.

‘Mindful Crochet’ by Emma Leith is available from MAKE etc and most good book stores.

Woolfest 2019 (Friday 28 and Saturday 29 June 2019) promises to be one of the best yet for crochet enthusiasts with Kathryn Parry of Gull Skull Designs in pride of place as this year’s Carolyn Rawlinson Memorial Stall Holder and several popular crochet designers and makers taking part.

Woolfest will include over 155 craft stalls in all, as well as rare breeds and other livestock, a raw fleece sale, live acoustic music and a range of food and drink options.

Rachel John of Extreme Textiles, Helen Jordan of Thread of Life – Crochet and Carole Rennison from Hooked by Design have long been Woolfest regulars and all three of them will be taking part this year, talking about their craft and the tools and techniques involved.  New for 2019 will be Emma Wood of MNUK (Made Naturally) with her kits that include knitting and macramé designs as well as crochet.

Kathryn Parry of Gull Skull Designs will be on the Caroline Rawlinson Memorial Stall at B1 at Woolfest.  Her work combines Tunisian crochet techniques and artisan weaving with hand-made embellishments to create accessories and homewares that are inspired by beachcombing finds, pebbles, lichens and shells.

A highlight of this year’s event will be a crafted sheep auction with a sheep theme in memory and in honour of Pam Hall, a familiar face and a Woolfest organiser since it began. Pam died in Eden Valley Hospice last summer so the auction will be in aid of this amazing place. Visitors are invited to make something themselves either with wool or featuring sheep and bring it along to the collection point near The Square at Woolfest, donate it to the auction and then bid for someone else’s creation.

Visitors can pre-book for a couple of workshops during Woolfest, as well as the Friday evening Giant Knit and Spin in. Liz Reed will be showing participants how to make their own driftwood folk and Debbie Zawinski will be explaining the processes from fleece to skein for new spinners as well as running a second workshop on making a stick spindle.

Ema Alcock is one of the organisers of Woolfest and a member of The Wool Clip cooperative since 2016, selling her crochet designs and upcycled wearables through the Caldbeck shop and on Aisle A of Woolfest.

“We always try to create a good mix of crafts, techniques and materials,” Ema says, “but all with a strong element of wool, especially British wool and those working with traditional techniques and native breeds. It’s great to see the renewed interest in crochet and I’m looking forward to meeting lots of those enthusiasts in Cockermouth in June.”

Woolfest 2019 takes place on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 June from 10am when the event takes over Mitchell’s Lakeland Livestock Centre in Cockermouth for those two days.

Entry is just £10 per day (including full programme) or £15 for a two-day ticket with free entry for accompanied children and free parking.  Full information, directions and online ticket sales can be found at www.woolfest.co.uk or via social media channels.
