In 1970 Peter Sauber designed his first racing car in the cellar of his parents’ house. He christened the car C1; the C was taken from his wife Christiane’s name and has been retained as a model designation for Sauber cars to this day. The race team grew steadily and enjoyed its first major international successes in the late 1980s.
