adidas’ Solar Boost 19 is inspired by NASA engineering, which means you can expect top-notch performance from the second iteration of the Solar Boost.

First, let’s talk about Boost. If you’ve had yet to experience adidas’ superior Boost cushion, you’re in for a treat. Boost cushion combines the following five elements for a premium run experience:

  • Durability: Shoes with Boost cushioning last.
  • All-temperature performance: Hot? No problem. Chilly? Boost has you covered.
  • Cushioning: You get maximal cushioning with minimal height.
  • Energy Return: It’s got a lot of it.
  • Adaptability: Run testers enjoy the flexibility of the foam (smooth running!).

Now let’s dive into what we love most about the Solar Boost 19:

WHAT THEY ARE:

The newest version of the Solar Boost offers the neutral Solar Boost 19 and the stability Solar Boost 19 ST.

WHAT THEY REPLACE:

The adidas Solar Boost 19 replaces the adidas Solar Boost

REASON 1: The Fit is Legit

Women’s Solar Boost 19 in Blue/Coral

adidas uses ARAMIS technology (used by NASA, BMW, and Boeing) to capture the foot in motion, giving them the ability to design for the natural movement of the foot and avoid pressure points or areas of irritation. This means you’ll experience a far more comfortable and adaptable running experience. The feel of the adidas Solar Boost 19 is snug, but not overly so. Expect a soft interior feel and a flexible mesh upper. Thanks, science!

REASON 2: It Propels You Forward, But With Added Stability

This shoe performs. Our run testers specifically called out how smooth their run felt in the Solar Boost 19s. Thanks to the way in which the Solar Propulsion Rail and boost cushioning work together, you’ll find that your foot is guided forward with support and with soft, springy cushioning underfoot. Our run testers also enjoyed the lateral support provided by the TFP sidewall (made with recycled materials). Your feet will feel supported but mobile, as they should!

Men’s adidas Solar Boost 19 in Navy

You’ll often hear people mention E-TPU capsules when talking about adidas’ BOOST cushioning. These capsules – thousands of them – are fused together to make up the BOOST midsole of the adidas Solar Boost 19. The capsules then store and release energy to create a springy, responsive run.

Reason 3: Expect Optimal Transitions

Some shoes (we won’t name names) feature soft foam cushioning interrupted by a hard medial post. The Solar Boost 19 ST (the stability version of the Solar Boost 19) features BOOST cushioning in the medial side. This means your transitions from heel-to-toe will feel fluid and comfortable. In fact, the transition is so fluid and comfortable you won’t notice it – which is exactly how it should be.

WHO THE ADIDAS SOLAR BOOST 19 IS BEST FOR:

The adidas Solar Boost 19 is a great shoe for neutral runners who regularly tackle urban runs (also great for track runs and treadmill workouts). It’s an especially high performer on longer runs thanks to the lightweight cushioning, support and smooth transitions.

The Solar Boost 19 ST: The Perfect Shoe for Stability Runners

If you’re a stability runner, don’t worry, adidas didn’t forget about you! The Solar Boost 19 comes in a stability model, the Solar Boost 19 ST. This shoe features a supportive heel construction that keeps your heel in place without limiting your range of motion. Expect all the performance features – from fit to optimal transitions – that’d you’d get in the adidas Solar Boost 19 but with added stability.

Even lighter and back to a softer underfoot feel, the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6 knocks it out of the park with a better overall fit and a keen eye for detail.

WHAT THEY ARE:

Super Comfy, Neutral Running Shoes

WHAT THEY REPLACE:

The new HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6 replaces the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 5

TOP TO BOTTOM THE HOKA ONE ONE CLIFTON 6 IS THE TOTAL PACKAGE

When the OG Clifton came onto the scene six years ago, I was hesitant and assumed it was gimmicky. My running peers persisted and it was soon clear that big cushion was not going away. Late to accept the platform runners, I eventually caved in and laced ‘em up. By the way, Current Hoka models look far more sleek and streamlined than their predecessors.

Out on a mid-tempo 5-miler, I felt as though I had a cushioned secret weapon, impervious to even the hardest concrete. And what was really cool was that the next day my legs felt fresher than my typical day after.

Six versions later and the upper has caught up to that glorious HOKA O-NAY O-NAY cushion. Here are the top three reasons you’ll want to put the Clifton 6 on your short list of new running shoes.

Reason 1: LET’S TALK ABOUT THAT UPPER FIT

Overall the Clifton 6 offers a more foot-forming fit. From the 5 to the 6, you’ll find the new upper has more elasticity and the benefit of embroidered reinforcements throughout the midfoot. Both really engaged with my foot for a secure feel. The toebox has been widened and the Clifton 6 has an Ortholite sockliner that feels better than most of the linings you’d find on the floor of your shoe.

Throughout the upper, you’ll notice cool details like alternate fabrics and venting. You’ll also notice a pull tab which I really appreciate for ease of entry and hey, it’s just a good look.

Reason 2: WELL-CUSHIONED OF COURSE!

The Clifton series wins awards for cushioning on the reg. The 6 comes back with an even softer, smoother formula. You also get the famous Meta-Rocker that assists midfoot strikers by easily “rocking” you forward upon touchdown.

I’m really enjoying these shoes; they’ve actually rejuvenated my running. If you find you’re not absolutely thrilled about your running shoes it might be time to switch it up. The Clifton 6 was the perfect shoe to put the fun back into my run. The cushioning is largely the reason for my enthusiasm about this shoe. Here’s a quick breakdown of the features of the Clifton 6 that help support a smooth run:

  • Early stage Meta-Rocker offers a smooth ride
  • Full compression EVA midsole provides signature HOKA ONE ONE® cushioning
  • Moderate heel bevel gives a smooth transition
Reason 3: IMPOSSIBLY LIGHT

Upon removing the Ortholite sockliner, I found hundreds of tiny holes meant to reduce weight in the footbed of the shoe. It’s details like this that make this year’s Clifton even lighter. Also, HOKA uses tougher high-abrasion rubber strategically placing it where it’s needed and nowhere it’s not. Reducing layers is another key move implemented to make the Clifton 6 impossibly light considering its cushion stack.

If you’ve lagged on trying HOKA, now is a perfect time. The Clifton 6 is very well-thought-out and you’ll be really happy with them.

Who The HOKA CLIFTON 6 is Best For:

This is a great shoe for the neutral everyday grinders who appreciate full on cushion and land midfoot. Thanks to the Meta-Rocker, mild overpronators can enjoy this offering too. It’s also perfect for your XL distances (thanks to the cushioned protection).

HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 6 Details & Specs:

Lighter, faster, and softer than ever, the Saucony Ride ISO 2 combines EVERUN and PWRFOAM cushion formulas for spirited miles and extreme comfort.

WHAT THEY ARE:

Lightweight, Flexible Neutral Running Shoes

WHAT THEY REPLACE:

The new Saucony Ride ISO 2 replaces the Saucony Ride ISO

DON’T SLEEP ON THE SAUCONY GUIDE ISO 2

Over the years I’ve run in several offerings from the Saucony Ride franchise (Before the ISOFIT revamp). I always liked running in the Ride, but whenever it was time to refresh my shoes there was always a competing option that was flashier, trendier or more gimmicky.

About 3 weeks ago around mile 5 in the new Saucony Ride ISO 2, I was in the zone, that runner’s happy place when one solitary thought rang through, “Don’t you ever sleep on the Saucony Guide again.”

There are many reasons the Saucony Ride ISO 2 is a Saucony bestseller, here are three:

Reason 1: HEEL GRAB & LOCKDOWN

There is A LOT of foam and padding around the heel and ankle – and that’s a good thing. This totally kept my heel planted. Some shoes use a more complicated system that only seems to bother or draw more attention to the heel/Achilles area. Saucony got it right here. Plus it makes for supreme step-in comfort.

There’s also a firmer heel counter surrounding the inside that helps keep my stride lined up. From the clean look (another win for this shoe) on the outside, you wouldn’t even know it was there.

Reason 2: EVERUN & POWERFOAM – A TRULY DYNAMIC DUO

If the heart of a car is the engine, then the heart of a running shoe is the cushion. Saucony steam-fused thousands of urethane beads together to create EVERUN cushion. This stuff generates lively performance, smooth landings, and stronger takeoffs. The EVERUN is placed in the topsole right under your foot, the PWRFOAM is where the rubber meets the road. Working together you get:

  • 83% more energy return
  • 3X longer-lasting
  • 2X more flexible to follow your foot in motion
Reason 3: ONE OF THE LIGHTEST IN CLASS

Compared to many shoes in the Saucony Ride ISO 2 segment (Ghost, Pegasus, Cumulus), the Guide is the lightest. So you’re getting a really light shoe considering the amount of cushioned protection underfoot.

Compared to last year’s Ride ISO, this year’s Ride ISO 2 has more flex, more cooling Jacquard mesh airflow and fits better with shortened eyelet bands.

If you’ve been sleeping on the Ride it’s time you checked it out. Great, great shoe.

Saucony Ride ISO 2 Details & Specs:

Who they’re for: This is a great everyday trainer for neutral runners that want a cushioned ride. It’s also perfect for your longer distances (thanks to that cushion and support).

CUSHION LEVEL: Level 4 Nice Amount of Cushioning

COLORS: 2 each for Men’s & Women’s

Have you ever noticed that you’re one size in one running shoe brand and a totally different size in another? It’s totally a thing. And here’s why:

No, your feet aren’t expanding and contracting on the regular – it’s the shoes you’re wearing. And yes, it makes shoe shopping far more challenging, especially when you’re shopping for athletic shoes. As a runner, or gym rat, or whatever form of athleticism you favor, you know that the way your shoe fits makes a BIG difference. It can make or break your performance. So why isn’t a size 7 a size 7 across the board?

Why Shoe Sizes Aren’t Standardized Across the Board

Brands develop their own sizing for their shoes. Weird, right? It’s akin to when you shop at your favorite store for let’s say, pants, and find that when you go elsewhere, you’re a totally different size. The difference in sizing starts at the beginning of the manufacturing process in factories with a tool called a shoe last. Shoe lasts are molded models of feet, sans toes. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and they’re a big part of what makes each shoe manufacturer unique. Much like apparel companies, it would put shoe brands at a disadvantage to adhere to universal sizing.

Shoes Sizes May Not Even Be Standardized Within the Brand

You might also find that the shoe you bought from your favorite running shoe brand doesn’t fit the same way another model you bought from that same brand does. This is totally a thing, too. This typically depends on the factory at which each model was manufactured.

How to Find Running Shoes That Fit Properly

For the most part, you’ll probably experience discrepancies from brand to brand rather than within a brand that you tend to shop. But it’s always helpful to try shoes on before buying them. Here are a few tips to help you determine if your shoes fit properly:

  1. Size Up: Believe it or not, you do, indeed, want to size about half a size up. Your feet expand when running. Be nice to them. You should have approximately a thumb’s width between the end of your longest toe and the front of the shoe.
  2. Watch Your Heel: Heel slippage is, without a doubt, terribly annoying! Make sure your heel isn’t falling out of your shoe.
  3. Make Sure the Shoe is Right For Your Specific Foot: It helps to understand your arch type because the height and flexibility of your arch determines the amount of support you need. Learn more about your arch here.
  4. Know What Cushion Level Works for You: Different shoes have different cushion levels. Some people thrive with ample cushioning underfoot while others prefer a more minimalist feel.

That’s a lot to take in, isn’t it? If you’re not sure what type of shoe works best for your specific activities of choice, you can visit your local Road Runner Sports store and get a free assessment (which includes our new 3D foot scan) and shoe fitting.

Foam rollers are great, but I’m pretty sure we can all agree that unless you really know what you’re doing with one, you don’t feel as good as you do after leaving a sports massage therapist. But what if I told you that there’s a tool that’ll give you a massage that’s so amazing, so invigorating, that you’ll feel like you’ve spent top dollar on an amazing massage? Yup. The Hypervolt feels that good.

Skip ahead using the links below to learn more about it:

The Benefits of Using the Hyperice Hypervolt

The Hyperice Hypervolt is absolutely crushing it right now. It’s our top-selling recovery tool and beloved among not only our customers, but also our employees. Hyperice visited Road Runner Sports’ HQ in San Diego to treat our employees to a massage and our stiff, tired runner joints rejoiced.

Why the HyperIce HyperVolt is Great for Athletes

This handheld vibrating massage tool has a slew of benefits, but let’s start here. The Hypervolt:

  • Helps relieve those aforementioned stiff, tired muscles from all that working out you do
  • Improves range of motion, which means less future stiff muscles and increased mobility
  • Promotes circulation which helps boost athletic performance
  • Amps up your warmups and recovery
It’s Quiet, Unlike Some of Its Competitors

Without naming names – because it’s not classy or necessary when you’re at the top of your game – the reviews show that athletes are loving the Hypervolt over its competitors not just for its state-of-the-art technology and lower price point, but also because IT’S QUIET. This is one of those benefits that you don’t fully appreciate until you’re in your cubicle at work after a long run DYING to use your massage device but realizing that you’re definitely not getting invited to the next group lunch if you keep annoying your co-workers. Use it in front of your TV, in your tiny apartment while your partner sleeps – anything goes! Your massager should not sound like a power tool.

Check out how quiet it is below:

The Hypervolt is Convenient

Worried that lugging this thing around might get annoying? Fear not! It’s actually surprisingly light (2.5 pounds). The battery life lasts for about three hours, so you can leave those attachments at home if you don’t want the added responsibility of remembering not to leave your charger at the office or gym. And, as we mentioned, it’s so much quieter than many of the other comparable massage tools on the market.

How to Use the Hyperice Hypervolt

Watch the video to understand speeds and attachments or read our breakdown below the video:

If you prefer gentle angel kiss massages, you do you. Oh, you’re more of a glutton for punishment? That’s fine, too. Hypervolt has four interchangeable head attachments and three speed settings to let you customize the pressure, speed and intensity that’s right for you.

Speeds:

  • Level one: About 2,000 percussions per minute. This lower setting is great for your upper extremities like your neck.
  • Level two: 2,600 percussions per minute. This setting is good for a slightly denser area, like your legs or calves.
  • Level three: 3,200 percussions per minute. Great for denser areas like hips, quads, glutes, and your piriformas — areas where the tissue and muscles are more dense and the higher amplitude of force helps loosen things up.
Attachments:
  • Ball attachment: The softest head to help ease your body into the massage.
  • Flat head: Good for denser parts of the body –  quads, glutes, pecs – but can be used on almost any body part. The most versatile head that comes with the Hypervolt.
  • The bullet head: Good for trigger-point targeting specific areas. This head works well on smaller areas like your feet.
  • The fork head: The two prongs are great for your traps, the area around the achilles tendon (never use it on the achilles itself), your ankle, your foot, really anywhere that’s tight. Some like to use it on the larger muscles like calves and quads, too.
Where You Can Get the Hypervolt

With an all-new airflow knit upper and faster reacting cushion, there’s a lot to love about the updated New Balance 890v7 running shoes.

WHAT THEY ARE:

Lightweight, Flexible Neutral Running Shoes

WHAT THEY REPLACE:

The New Balance 890v7 replace the New Balance 890v6

WHAT’S NEW WITH THE NEW BALANCE 890v7:

Men’s New Balance 890v7 in White/Black

This iteration of the New Balance 890v7 has come a long way from last year’s v6 model. Let’s start at the top with the new knit mesh upper which is extremely breathable and for that reason alone, you might consider this shoe a summer runner. The knit does a fantastic job of holding the foot secure without feeling restrictive. New Balance has been killing it lately with their upper fit – I think this is the best fitting 890 yet.

The 809v7 is accommodating in the forefoot so if you have very narrow feet you might look elsewhere. I enjoyed the room up front and the liked that the partial bootie construction/gusseted tongue wraps nicely around the middle of the foot, which ensures a locked in feel even as I turned up the pace.

From its side profile, you can see that the 890v7 has more rocker than the v6. While there is plenty of ground contact area in the v7 which lends to a sure-footed feel, you’ll find the slightly more rounded bottom allows strides to roll on and off. You’ll be riding on a 6mm drop so the heel is just slightly higher than the forefoot. I found these elements work together nicely to achieve a rhythmic run.

Mushy cushion isn’t always ideal, especially when you want to chase faster times. The New Balance 890v7 ditches softer foam in favor of the lighter, more rebounding Revlite for a firmer, more energy-returning cushion experience. As advertised, the 890v7 feels light and fast.

WHO THEY’RE FOR:

Personally, I wouldn’t do my longest run in these, but lighter runners could. I like the 890v7 for shorter daily training and tempo days. And New Balance touts the 890v7 as a lightweight daily trainer. I also did a gym/intense cardio workout in them and they felt great and lightweight.

The 890v7 is a neutral shoe so if you have more flexible ankles with pronation you might go with a stability shoe. But for most people the 890v7 will thrive as a daily trainer, or as a tempo or race-day-specific enhancement.
