Spring Educational Workshop:May 7, 2019 Oracle Database Performance & The Optimizer:
Come and spend a day with Vlado Barun and learn from one of the leaders on Oracle’s Real-World Performance Team –
The focus for the day will be on truly understanding on how the database should be, or rather is designed to be, used. Proper use can result in orders of magnitude of performance gains, think 10X, 100X and sometimes 1000X faster. The format of the training day will be a mix of presentations, interactive discussions and demos that show the performance gains. This training is targeted for an intermediate/advanced audience that likes to be challenged and is interested in getting the best possible performance out of their system.
Who we are
The Real-World Performance Team is part of the Oracle Database Development organization and focuses on achieving the maximum performance from the Oracle Database and hardware in the real world.
We do this by identifying inefficiencies in current systems and applying modern database design and tuning techniques.
Over the years we have developed the Real-World Performance methodology, which uses diagnostics to articulate the problem using numbers, aiming for a solution that achieves exceptional performance using the best available tools.
Whenever we look at a performance problem, we follow a few simple principles:
1. Use the database as it was designed to be used
2. Employ numerical and logical debugging techniques using the appropriate database diagnostics tools for the problem
3. The entire system is within scope, from applications to algorithms to database
4. Avoid and eliminate “tuning” by hacking/guessing/luck to understand root cause of the problem before implementing the solution
We have a few spots available to volunteer at Training Days 2019 — receive a discounted rate to the conference as a Room or Registration Ambassador. INTERESTED??? For more details.

We are excited to present this year’s topic for our annual Women in Technology luncheon at the Rocky Mountain Oracle Users Group (RMOUG) conference:
‘Women in Technology: Grit you need to carve
the path to the top positions in technology’
“According to global CIO survey women make up just 9 percent of senior IT leadership roles. Unfortunately, this number has not changed in last 2 years.”- survey done by Harvey Nash/KPMG CIO. Another study shows U.S. women working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics are 45 percent more likely than their male peers to leave the industry within their first year.Join Komal Goyal, our panel facilitator and these amazing women who have said ‘I am not going to quit’ and are part of that 9% in the leadership roles today; for an insightful lunch conversation about what they did to stay their course and make to the executive level.

How to Stay Relevant
I keep hearing people express concerns about their jobs and discussing what they think they should be doing to ensure that they remain valuable and employable. These questions are not new, by the way. COBOL programmers were asking the same questions a very long time ago. Why are they asked with so much more frequency now? It’s complicated. But I believe it’s the result of uncertainty caused by the massive amount of change going on in the IT world. The trend toward cloud computing is definitely high on the list of disruptive changes. But there’s also a strong push to automate all sorts of operational tasks and, of course, that includes traditional DBA tasks. I’m sure you’ve heard Larry talking about the autonomous database, right? AI, massive increases in data volumes, and the trend toward open source software also contribute to the disruption.
Change is inevitable, and the pace is relentless. But despite all that — and at the risk of ruining the punch line of the presentation — I don’t believe there will ever be a shortage of opportunities for smart, industrious people, as long as they are willing to evolve their skills. So, let’s discuss where the industry is headed, where we should be focusing our energy, and How to Stay Relevant.
Kerry Osborne is an Oracle performance specialist. A consultant for most of his career, he’s been fortunate enough to spend time doing a combination of technical and business stuff. Kelly started an Oracle-focused consulting company called Database Consultants in the late 80s (later renamed ThinkSpark), which he eventually sold. In 2004, he co-founded another Oracle-focused firm, Enkitec, which was acquired by Accenture in 2014.
