Many homeowners go on vacation about once per year and over 75% tend to go not only in the summer, but at locations that have a place to swim and enjoy the outdoors.

For the families who own swimming pools at their home and vacation elsewhere, here are a few easy tips and reminders about caring for your pool while out of town.

licensed landscaping company servicing montgomery county swimming pool builder located in howard county Phone a Friend or Neighbor

This might seem a bit simple, but it is key at keeping your pool running and maintaining its cleanliness.

Ideally, those that help would already be familiar with maintaining a pool and its proper operation. Have your friend or neighbor check the following about once per day:

Emptying the skimmer basket
Skim the pool surface (be sure to leave out the proper tools)
Check the filter pressure and backwash if necessary
Do a water test
Add chemicals if and only if absolutely necessary

Using a Timer

While not everyone has a timer installed with their pool system, these devices can help automate some functions necessary for the best water health.

If you do have a timer, set it to run every 8 to 12 hours.

Check Your Water Before You Leave

Before you leave on your vacation, have your pool water checked. Many home tests will do just fine with this, but if not, take a sample to a local pool store. One of the biggest notations is to ensure that the pH and alkalinity are properly balanced.

Located in a private community in Howard County, these homeowners wanted a backyard master plan that allowed them to have a wide open space for their friends and family, no matter the age.

Our Rhine designers and architects skillfully created a plan that would encompass an incredible outdoor living space.

Rhine installed a nearly 900 sq. ft. swimming pool, adorned with a Hanover Bullnose Natural Finish. A Pentair filter and pump system was installed to keep the water clean and the touch-panel system makes it so easy to operate.

The paver patio and pool deck was constructed using over 2,000 sq. ft. of Hanover Chiseled Finish Pavers in a herringbone pattern.

The Natural Stone Retaining Walls, Steps, and Fire Pit were complimented with PA Bluestone Treadstock.

The Pool House is a significant benefit to these homeowners as it not only allows storage of equipment and other outdoor items, but the front area is incredible for entertaining, with its bar top and seat area. There is also ample space on the preparation side for making drinks, food, and plenty of room for storing various tools and accessories. In the evening hours, an easy-to-operate lighting system was also installed.

Rhine also installed an Aluminum Fence, Landscaping, and a complete Drainage System.

4 Easy Ways to Prevent Weeds

Weeds are seemingly everywhere, especially at the start of the season. Some homeowners go the DIY route, while others prefer to hire a professional lawn care or landscaping company.

If you’ve gone the DIY route and don’t use a professional lawn care company, you may be wondering how the pros keep weeds from constantly appearing. Weeds not only threaten to kill your existing plant life, but they can so quickly make a beautiful landscape look a mess. Our Team at Rhine Landscaping is sharing some easy tips at caring for your lawn to keep it beautiful all year long!

Weed-free Landscaping in Howard County, MD Cultivating the Soil

If you frequently redistribute your garden’s soil, it’ll actually prevent weeds from growing. It may seem tedious to move soil around, but it’ll benefit the growth of your plants in the long run. Give it a try!

Pulling Weeds

We know, we know, pulling weeds is tedious and annoying. The fact is, it works. Manually pulling out weeds is the easiest way to remove unwanted garden weeds,. Be sure to get down to the roots and be careful of any thorns or other natural defenses some weeds present.

Using Mulch

This spring is a great time to redesign your garden. While you’re at it, put down a nice bag of mulch. Not only will it cultivate your plant life, it’ll also impede weeds from growing quickly. Throwing down mulch is a lot of hard work but it’ll bring a freshness to your garden that you’ve never seen before!

Using Plastic

If you’re at your wit’s end, you may want to try using plastic. Just cut holes where you want your actual plants to grow. The plastic will keep weeds from sprouting up and ruining your beautiful garden.

Herbicides

This may be a last ditch effort for some people. Herbicides can be used to control weed growth, but be sure you pick one out that’s safe for your garden.

Lush landscaping and outdoor fireplace designed by Rhine Landscaping

What is the most common pest in the warmer season? Mosquitoes are expected to be more prominent this season, particularly because our region did not get a consistently cold enough season to kill off the larvae. Thus, many reports predict that our area may see an increase in mosquitoes. While they seem to annoy some folks more than others, and are more attracted to some people, there are many different methods at minimizing their existence around your home.

There are countless methods of getting rid of them, but not all of them are safe or environmentally friendly. DEET, a popular chemical in insect repellent can cause all sorts of health problems such as headaches, neurotoxicity, muscle weakness, and many other symptoms. This harmful chemical might get rid of the mosquitoes, but natural deterrents can often work just as well, and sometimes better.

They’re also not going to ruin your yard or the health of you and your family. So, let’s check out some of your options for natural deterrents you can incorporate into your next landscaping project.

Flower garden of Marigolds
Plants that Will Help

Certain plants that are placed into your yard or garden will help ward off some of these pesky little biters before they become a problem. Marigolds, Chrysanthemums, Asters, and Pyrethrum Daisies are all thought to deter mosquitoes from nesting in your yard. Some herbs that might also help are Basil, Anise, and Coriander. If you incorporate some of these plants into your garden or landscaping project then you may find yourself with fewer mosquitoes, particularly when summertime begins. Make sure to dump out your watering cans and other water carriers once you’ve finished with your gardening. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so minimize their breeding grounds as you go, and as little as a teaspoon is enough for larvae to thrive.

Moving The Air Around You

Mosquitoes love the humid, dense, summer air. If you are outside tending to your gardening or enjoying an evening with friends and family, consider using an oscillating fan. The added breeze will add airflow around your area whereby mosquitoes will not be able to fly.

Ward Off While You Work

While you’re outside working in your garden, make sure to wear light-fitting long sleeved clothing to minimize your exposed surface area. You can also utilize one of the many natural oils available to keep mosquitoes off of you as well. Some oils that can help a lot are catnip oil, cinnamon oil, and vanilla oil mixed with a little olive oil can each do the job of repelling mosquitoes rather well. They’re also completely natural and safe for you and the environment.

Ready to rid yourself of mosquitoes?

Spruces trees can be found all throughout the Maryland region. They are widely known for their vibrant color and ability to provide an incredible natural barrier.

“Your Spruce Tree is Dead”

However, there has been an increase in fungal diseases among spruce trees. A lot of this can often be attributed to the varying weather in our region. These fluctuations in both temperature and over-abundance of rain make spruce trees more vulnerable to fungus.

A Healthy Spruce Tree and a Spruce Tree that is Dying

Suspect your spruce trees have a possible disease? Contact Rhine today for assistance with mitigating these issues. If caught early enough, some trees can thrive quite well. If a disease is too prominent, replacing them might be the most viable option.

There are some fungicide treatments that can be used but a lot of the chemical-based remedies are only effective if caught early as noted. For spruce trees that may be suffering from cytospora canker disease, typically found with more mature spruce trees, we suggest to remove the dead branches as soon as possible. Disinfect your pruning shears, trim to the trunk, and clean up near the tree base.

If the tree does need to be removed and you intend on planting another tree in its place, consider a different type to reduce the risk of future diseases inflicted upon spruce trees.
