I may have despaired this week that I have no Sunday Stash to show you, cries that went largely unheeded by my family for I think they may have heard those words before. And too often. This time of the year seems slower in terms of fabric releases - which is not a bad thing - and so I thought I would show you some pieces of fabric that I have picked from local stores and online in the last few weeks.
Floral Lattice ~ Rose Collection by Quiltgate
 - Printed in Japan

This pretty fabric bundle is a vintage and feedsack inspired selection of fabrics. The first being a very pretty floral print from the rose collection by Quiltgate, printed on a fine quilting cotton and available in five different color ways (pictured directly above). I love this daisy design and purchased a small piece of each available color way.

Also part of the first bundle is this fun text fabric featuring a range of recipes. This print is from the Calico Crow collection by Lauren Nash for Penny Rose Fabrics.

And with the release of the Palace Garden Tana Lawn Collection several new designs have been added to my Liberty of London fabric stash (as well as a re-stock of a favorite classic design).

A sponsored Giveaway.

Alice Caroline is delighted to announce the launch of their brand new and exclusive Liberty collection of fabrics. The collection has been designed in collaboration with the Liberty design team. Alice has chosen her favourite prints and created a collection of gorgeous new colorways which are now available exclusively from the Alice Caroline website.

There are 12 beautiful and popular Liberty prints which have been recoloured to create a stunning Liberty rainbow in dusty tones. The rainbow tones in this new collection are pretty soft pastels that still have the hallmark of strong Liberty design and colour.

This range has been inspired by Alice's love of Liberty fabrics and by her desire to see new colour options in some of her favourite prints. Alice has spent many months collecting scraps, delving through archive fabrics and playing around with colours to get to this point. And what a treat the collection is; a rainbow of dazzling colors. The rainbow theme means that the whole collection works really well together for sewing projects and of course quilting.

This week's Sunday Stash bundle is a selection of new arrivals. I have slowly been adding several of the new release and some old favorite Liberty of London Tana Lawn fabrics to stash, as well as some perfect stash basics.

Chambray by Andover Fabrics is available from:
Jones & Vandermeer

I LOVE stash basics - gingham, checks, dots, stripes, solids, chambray - and the above feed my more recent obsession with all things blue. The Liberty floral fabric pictured above is long time favorite Liberty print called Betsy. This color way is Betsy N. Pictured as well is gingham in blue by Yuwa Fabrics and Chambray by Andover Fabrics.

A Palace Garden by Liberty of London is available from:
Alice Caroline

Liberty of London's latest fabric collection - A Palace Garden - has also arrived in stores and the three fabrics pictured above are early arrivals from that collection. How pretty are those floral prints? There are many more prints that form part of this collection - you can see more of the designs from this collection here. Pictured below are a re-stash of some classic Liberty designs ~

Last but not least are these three fabrics from the Sun Print 2018 range by Alison Glass. I am a little late to the Sun Print party and have only recently noted these for their simplicity of design and saturated color. Available in more color ways.

Diatom in Seaside, Parakeet, Seagull from the Sun Print 2018
collection by Alison Glass

Sun Print 2018 by Alison Glass is available from:
The Fat Quarter Shop
Fabric Worm
Stash Fabrics

A Finished Quilt.

QUILT DETAILS
One Patch Quilt - Diamonds
The finished quilt measures 54 inches x 68 inches.
360  diamonds.
18 vertical rows of 20 diamonds.
Diamond fabric pieces have been cut from 3½" fabric strips
Fabric Selection:
Printed cotton fabrics - alternating light/dark.
100+ different printed fabrics by various designers/fabric houses.
Quilted:
Machine quilted on a domestic sewing machine.
Batting:

I love a good scrap buster quilt and similarly enjoy combining color and low volume prints. This quilt was the best of both those worlds! Here the fabric - the various prints and the colors - do all the work, and the quilt design, while fun and interesting, is secondary to the overall presentation of the quilt. This quilt feels very "me" and choosing fabrics from stash was intuitive. It doesn't always flow this easily and without hesitation.

The quilt has been quilted with straight vertical lines only. The lines are spaced one inch apart and I have used a quilting guide attached to the walking foot to assist with keeping my lines nice and straight (by running the guide along the seam lines and previous quilting lines). I very rarely mark quilting lines on the quilt. Supporting the quilt well during the quilting process is key and I am fortunate to have a large sewing cabinet into which my sewing machine lowers to ensure that I have a large flat working surface.

For the back of the quilt I have used a small scale floral fabric - Meadow in Summer - from the Best of Sarah Jane collection for Michael Miller. This is such a pretty floral fabric and complements the soft color palette of the quilt perfectly.

And for the binding I have used a soft pink/white stripe - Essential Stripe in Baby Pink for Moda Fabrics.

This quilt is available for purchase from my Etsy Store.

The Tea for Two collection is the most recently released range of fabrics by Liberty of London created specifically for patchwork and quilting.
The Tea for Two collection is a limited edition collection which consists of a set of eight prints inspired by an afternoon tea as a much loved British tradition, filled with cupcake delights and a set of china cups. Follow us down the garden trail to uncover a secret meadow where an afternoon of sweet treats are enjoyed amongst a plethora of flowers. The collection features daisies alongside trailing vines, hearts, toadstools and hidden strawberries.

The color palette includes warm dusty pinks, coral tones mixed with lavender, denim and cornflower blues. The warmer, neutral tones are inspired by stone paths on local walking trails. All Liberty fabrics are printed using traditional printing techniques which ensure a deep penetration of ink dye for a high-quality finish. The base quality Lasenby is 100% cotton specifically woven with sewers in mind and like most standard quilting cotton is 44" wide.

Work in Progress.

One patch quilts have been a favorite amongst quilters for as long quilters having been making quilts; where a simple shape allows the fabric to be the feature (such as the random use of fabric scraps, or a more carefully chosen fabric selection or color palette) or an intricate layout of a single repeating shape where the use of fabric dictates a design created by the one patch. One patch units and quilts vary from simple - squares, triangles, diamonds - to more complex - hexagons, clam shells, apple cores.

This week I have chosen to work with a diamond shape as my single repeating unit. For this quilt I have used a 60 degree Diamond Ruler by Creative Grids to cut my units quickly and accurately from fabric strips. I have also paid attention to the grain of the fabric (the fabric pieces are all "on grain" with the exception of a few that I re-arranged at the last minute! - as you do) for on-grain quilt top is going to be easier to baste and quilt. You can of course use any diamond template - paper or acrylic - or a ruler with 60 degree angle lines to cut your fabric pieces.

My fabric selection for this quilt consists of many of my stash favorites, some of which have been around for a number of years and others have only just arrived. I have used all printed fabrics and I have alternated a "light" (low volume) fabric with a darker fabric.

Piecing this quilt top together is not as difficult as you might think and there are definitely no inset seams. The diamonds are first sewn together in long vertical rows. The seams for each row are pressed in the one direction, alternating the direction of the seams for each row. That way when the vertical rows are sewn together all seams nest, points match perfectly, and you have a nice flat quilt top.

We're in for a treat today! Sugar Sack by Whistler Studios has arrived and I adore this reproduction fabric collection; presented in a bright color palette of vivacious red, classic blue, white, spring green and sunny yellow. Classic gingham and small to medium scale florals round out this collection with geometric prints.

The collection consists of eight designs each available in up to five different color ways. I adore several of the floral prints (especially the two designs featured above) and love how the collection is complemented by some excellent small scale basics, including gingham and ditzy florals.

A Finished Quilt

QUILT DETAILS
Chambray + Liberty of London Checkerboard Quilt
The finished quilt measures 56 inches x 72 inches.
100+ different fabrics.
I  have made 63 16-patch blocks.
A total of 1008 patches of fabric (36 rows of 28 squares).
Each finished square measures 2 inches x 2 inches.
Printed fabric:
A mix of Liberty Tana Lawn, quilting cotton, and reclaimed shirt fabrics.
Background fabric:
2½ yards chambray fabric in black by Lecien.

QUILTING:
Quilted on a domestic sewing machine
with walking foot and quilting guide.
All over grid created by stitching edge to edge
horizontal and vertical lines (ditch stitching),
and a set of  edge to edge diagonal lines through
the center of the chambray fabric squares.
THREAD for quilting:
Aurifil 28wt thread (the gray spool) for quilting:
(28wt top thread - 40wt thread in the bobbin)
QUILT BACK fabric:
Jardin de Paris in Mint from the Menagerie Collection
by Rifle Paper Co. for Cotton + Steel.
BINDING fabric:
Liberty of London Tana Lawn - Summer Blooms A (yellow)
from the Garden of Dreams Collection.
BATTING:
Low loft cotton batting.

I have finished my Chambray + Liberty Checkerboard Quilt and I am pretty pleased with how it turned out. I especially love how the quilting stitches settled into the chambray fabric. I have again used a heavier weight thread for the quilting (28wt Aurifil) so while the stitches nestle into the fabric they are still well defined and an additional decorative feature of this quilt. Having said that, this quilt is all about the beautiful Liberty of London fabrics. I do love working with these fine fabrics and for this quilt I have used a number of classic prints that I just can't get enough of!

For the back of the quilt I have used a single fabric (Jardin de Paris in Mint) from the Menagerie collection by Rifle Paper Co for Cotton + Steel. This is such a beautiful floral fabric which suited the feel of this quilt perfectly, balanced the overall color palette, and gave the quilt a warm glow.

I have finished the quilt with a Liberty of London Tana Lawn fabric for the binding; a bright and cheerful yellow fabric called Summer Blooms A from the Garden of Dreams collection.  And while I usually machine stitch the binding, I did hand slip stitch the binding to the back of the quilt because ... Liberty! Lovely Liberty.

Alice Caroline specializes in selecting fabrics from the main Liberty of London collection, the world's most desirable fabrics with a unique heritage dating back over 100 years, and putting the right designs and colors together to form their own unique brand. Fabrics are packaged together or sold individually by the yard to give customers a wonderful choice of colors for their sewing projects.

Alice Caroline is once again delighted to announce the launch of their brand new and exclusive Liberty collection of fabrics.

Included are brand new colorways of the popular Betsy print (in 2 unique colorways!) as well as Mitsi, and Whiltshire.

The exclusive fabric collection is available to pre-order now - to be shipped from 5th July 2018. Alice Caroline is based in the UK and ships internationally.

When clicking over to take a peek at the exclusive collection you may also like to check out the new quilting cotton collection that has just arrived: Tea for Two.

I thought it might be nice to mix things up today and feature this wonderful new addition to my quilt book library rather than a fabric stash addition. Flossie Teacakes' Guide to English Paper Piecing by Florence Knapp is specific to English Paper Piecing but if you enjoy stitching and have an appreciation for patchwork and quilting (or craft) in general, I think you will treasure this comprehensive guide as much as I do.

Click on any image for larger view.

More than a "how-to" resource book Flossie Teacakes' Guide to English Paper Piecing offers a softer, warmer approach, starting with a brief history of English Paper Piecing, exploring the the joy of working with our hands and the benefits for mind, body, and spirit, and a fascinating insight into the tenacity and grit required to complete long term projects (featuring the works Albert Small - whose first quilt contained 36,000+ hexagons and the patchworks of Lucy Boston).

The Quilts of Albert Small

Chapter 2 shines a spotlight on modern English paper piecers including the works of Linda White, Miss Leela, Dittany Matthews, Jodi Godfrey and Lorena Uriarte. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about these women; what motivates and inspires them, and their approaches to handsewing, and I could immediately relate to the expressions of joy that English paper piecing brings to their life.

Elenor Jean quilt by Linda White
Sally Amberton's Hexagon Patchwork
Work in progress ~ Blissful Abandon by Lorena Uriarte

Chapter 3 and 4 explore the technique that is English paper piecing and all that this entails; from needles, thread, and paper pieces, to tessellating designs, templates, and of course the fabrics!  This book is a comprehensive guide that covers the basics of EPP - like basting techniques, fussy cutting fabric, and wrapping different shapes - to less often covered topics, like how to wrap and sew curves, securing stitches, appliqueing EPP to a background fabric, and a excellent tip on how to tie your thread onto the needle so that you can stitch with a relaxed hand.

And last but not least Florence includes several original paper-pieced rosettes and quilt patterns to practice your EPP skills, to inspire, and to tempt you to play with geometric shapes.

Congratulations Florence on the release of this beautifully written and informative book! I have already spent several hours reading through the stories and studying the quilts that have brought countless hours of joy to the makers; inspiring me to continue to work on my English paper piecing projects and reminding me take time to reflect and sew slowly and purposefully.
