Have you heard the term freebie? How about opt-in or lead magnet? They all mean essentially the same thing—and that thing is a free incentive that you offer on your health coaching website or social media page in exchange for someone’s email address.

If you’ve ever seen a pop-up form suddenly appear as you’re scrolling through someone else’s website (health coach or not) offering a free e-book, guide, or discount, you know what I’m talking about. They want to collect your information so they can send you emails and nurture their relationship with you. Why? So that you’ll become a paying customer or client.

That’s why you want to have an incentive on your website.

By “opting-in” and downloading your freebie, your audience agrees to get email marketing from you. But how do you know what kind of incentive they want?

In today’s post, I’ll share types of freebies you can offer on your website right now, and show you inspiring examples of what other health coaches are doing for theirs.

 10 Proven Types of Freebies
  • eBook
  • Checklist or cheat sheet
  • Guide
  • Starter Kit
  • Quiz
  • Invitation to a webinar or event
  • Recipes or a meal plan
  • Healthy food list
  • Videos
  • Discount for products or services

What you offer is important, but so is how you describe what you’re offering. When creating your freebie, think about what you specialize in as a health coach and what’s important to your niche audience, plus what catchy title will make people want to download it.

Consider quantifying your opt-in with a number, like 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Ditching Sugar or Steal My 20-Minute Fat Burning Routine. Your freebie could reveal something valuable to your audience, such as How to Sneak More Veggies into Your Kids’ Lunchbox or How to Survive Vacation Without Derailing Your Diet. Or it could act as a teaser, with a title like Get a Sneak Peek of My First 3 Chapters.

What Are Other Health Coaches Offering?

Now that you’ve seen some options for what you can do, here’s what other health coaches are using for their free incentives.

Amie Tollesfrud

What’s the Freebie: A Guide to Niche-ing Down Cheat Sheet (although she swaps out her her freebies regularly, as you’ll see if you click on her link)

Who it’s For: Health coaches, nutritionists, wellness enthusiasts, and NTPS who feel stuck when it comes to figuring out their niche and standing out in the crowd.

Why it Works: Amie regularly asks her subscribers and followers what aspects of their business they’re struggling with the most. She knows it’s a pain point for others because she asked them and got direct feedback. Amie’s Niche-ing Down Cheat Sheet solves a real problem for her audience. And this is just one of her freebies. Have a look around her home page to find even more.

Holly Higgins

What’s the Freebie: A Food & Mood Sensitivity Quiz

Who it’s For: People who’ve been told that their depression and anxiety stem from chemical imbalances, but are curious if something they’re eating is messing with their mood.

Why it Works: Holly knows her niche because she has a long-time history of battling depression herself. She’s used nutrition to reverse her own health challenges as well as those of her constant stream of clients. Holly’s Food & Mood Sensitivity Quiz demonstrates her expertise and unique value proposition.

Darryl Edwards

What’s the Freebie: An eBook on The Importance of Play, plus bonus downloads

Who it’s For: Sedentary folks (like he used to be) who want to learn more about primal movement and why it’s crucial for good health.

Why it Works: Darryl’s freebie is chock full of value. He doesn’t just send you the eBook when you subscribe. The Primal Play expert, Primal Health Coach Institute Board of Advisors member, and TEDx speaker also sends you a printable infographic and a link to a recent article he wrote that was published in the Journal of Evolution and Health. Darryl gets additional bonus points for including a fun call-to-action.

Abel James

What’s the Freebie: A Quick Start Guide to Fat Burning & 7-Day Meal Plan

Who it’s For: Men and women who are sick of wasting money on programs that don’t work and want to start burning fat right away.

Why it Works: Abel knows his audience is busy. And his freebie promises one quick win—burning fat. He knows that with his Quick Start Guide, 7-Day Meal Plan, and a complete grocery shopping list, his clients will be set up to easily achieve that win.

Christine Hassler

What’s the Freebie: A customized Expectation Hangover® treatment plan (delivered in a video and worksheet)

Who it’s for: People ready to move past their limiting beliefs and make an action plan to live the life they’ve always wanted.

Why it works: Not only is Christine the Master Coach here at the Primal Health Coach Institute, she’s also a world-renowned life coach. Her Expectation Hangover treatment plan works because it’s consistent with her overall message—helping people reach their goals by removing the self-imposed obstacles standing in their way. Consistency is key when building your brand, and your incentive is no exception.

Jillian Guerin

What’s the Freebie: A downloadable PDF with 4 Steps to More Energy

Who it’s for: Busy professionals who are battling burnout (like Jillian did) and want to rediscover their zest for life.

Why it works: Jillian’s freebie is instantly accessible. Instead of digging through your spam folder for an email with a link buried somewhere on the page, you can download her guide the second you enter your email address.

Jess Baumgardner

What’s the Freebie: A 3-Day Guide to Realistic Self-Care

Who it’s For: New moms who are craving confidence and looking to add more balance to their lives.

Why it Works: The more specific you can get about the benefits of your freebie, the better. Jess is an expert in helping new moms make self-care a priority, and her 3-Day Guide reflects that by offering something specific. In this case, it’s easy ways to add more self-care to your routine as a busy mom.

Nicole Jardim

What’s the Freebie: A Period Quiz to help women get to the root cause of their PMS symptoms

Who it’s For: Women with painful or confusing symptoms who dread that time of the month.

Why it Works: It’s like getting a free session with one of the leading experts in hormonal health. In less than 10 minutes, you’ll get a custom report based on your unique answers. Plus, Nicole includes a free 3-part course on how to fix your period when she sends your results.

Conclusion

I opted-in to these health coaches’ freebies to see what the experience was like, but you don’t necessarily have to. Use their lead magnets as a guide as you think about what appeals to your niche and what your audience (or friends and family) is always asking you about, and pick one of the formats listed above.

You want to offer something valuable to your niche so they feel like it’s worthwhile to submit their email address. And, of course, you want to collect their email address to start nurturing your relationship with them to take them from curious prospect to paying client.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing more helpful tips on email marketing, including what kinds of emails you should be writing and how to properly curate your list.

I honestly didn’t see this coming…I’ve been blessed with good genetic health and energy my whole life, avoiding significant health challenges. Sure, I’ve suffered from an occasional pulled muscle or turned ankle, and over the course of a couple of years I nursed a right shoulder rotator cuff back to full capacity.

When I turned 46 years old, I started noticing discomfort in my right IT band. I had gotten back into some longer distance cardio training and I assumed it would work itself out. It never became uncomfortable, just persistent at mile 4 or 5 of a trail run. Like many, I ignorantly blamed my age for slow declines in my health. On New Year’s Eve 2016, I joined up with two of my cousins to for a somewhat steep 6-mile hike up Frary Peak on Antelope Island, Utah.

Our conversation turned to age, energy and body weight. My cousins, Kevan and Brent, were both hovering below 170 pounds whereas I had somehow climbed from 171 pounds up to 184 pounds over the course of a few years. Given that we were all were roughly the same age with similar familial traits and genetic factors, I took particular interest in our diverging body compositions. A couple of months later I had a routine physical with my family physician who attributed my mid-section weight gain to “natural aging factors.” I pretty much accepted this diagnosis.

That said, when your doctor says, “That’s just because you’re getting old” don’t believe it.

My 180-degree lifestyle change began a month later in April 2017, when I decided to support my wife in her Whole30 nutrition program as suggested by her sister and a couple of others.

Those who know anything about the program will sympathize with my discomfort in abandoning my go-to foods such as dairy, grains, legumes and sugars. But over the course of 9 or 10 days I noticed unexpected improvements in my energy level throughout the day and lack of bloating and burping after meals.

Suddenly I realized I could take control of my health, and that the natural aging process was merely incidental to my current and future state of wellbeing. Then, I stumbled upon a Bulletproof Radio episode where Dave Asprey interviewed Mark Sisson of The Primal Blueprint. From there I was introduced to the Primal Endurance book, along with a logical and intuitive set of immutable primal lifestyle laws.

From the book’s training recommendations, I went into a recovery phase before starting back up with a smarter Primal Cardio schedule. During this time, I had been eating mostly Whole30, and I began adopting more regular movement into my daily lifestyle along with myofascial release. Within a month I no longer noticed any symptoms of IT band discomfort or hip tension and I remain free of these symptoms and any related discomfort to this day.

But even more importantly, my whole philosophy around aggressive cardio had changed, giving me a powerful perspective on balancing my cardio goals with long-term longevity. This enlightenment into my own health potential got me thinking about my immediate family members, each of whom has their own unique health challenges.

My wife and my mom have both battled varying degrees of depression and anxiety. My children have confronted daily challenges with social anxiety, asthma, poor core muscle tone, coordination, dyslexia, brain fog, allergies, gastrointestinal disorders, insomnia and more. I’ve always been in general good health and I’m grateful for that. But as I pursued adapted new ancestral health and lifestyle habits as laid out by the Primal Blueprint and other sources, I discovered strength and wellness that I didn’t even know I was missing.

My improved energy and increased knowledge are helping me to help my wife, my children, my parents, relatives, and many others.

Since receiving my certification…

As a trail runner, family man and now a Certified Primal Health Coach, I specialize in helping endurance enthusiasts discover habit-forming course corrections for reduced injury and illness through diet, lifestyle and healthy training practices.

I also work with adults who want to boost their overall energy, parents looking to transform their family’s health and companies interested in offering health-promoting programs within their business culture.

I founded Primal Utah to connect people and professionals through ancestral health community programs, events and coaching services.

A good coach helps you find your best path, discover the goals that are best for you and then, help you stick to those goals. I love every opportunity to empower lasting course corrections in individuals, each with his or her own unique health story.

Ancestral health empowers people to live well in all aspects of their lives through sound nutrition, sleep, movement and stress reduction. I believe that healthy decisions aren’t made just once, but rather require constant evaluation and adjustment. I help people to tune into the signals that their bodies tell them, so that they can thrive from perpetual improvements.

What’s the one thing you need before starting your health coaching business? It’s not a business card. Or a logo. Or even securing a place to see clients. To be a successful health coach, you need a winning launch strategy.

What’s great about a launch strategy is that you can use it every time you launch something new.

Whether that’s a new workshop, new online course, or a new book. And of course, a new health coaching business. Simply put, this kind of strategy determines how you’ll kick off whatever it is you’re launching. Here are the steps you need to take to put yourself (or your product) out there and start getting leads.

Make It Easy for People to Find You

I wish it was as easy as posting to Facebook that you’re “now accepting clients!” Trust me, it’s not. That said, it’s not incredibly difficult, either. It just takes a little time to figure out your strategy. Thankfully, that’s exactly what I’m going to walk you through today.

I’ll assume you already have a good handle on identifying your niche audience—this is the focused subset of people with a specific health concern you specialize in. Your niche might be busy working moms who want to reverse the aging process, young business professionals who want to avoid burnout, or amateur athletes interested in a primal approach to training. It doesn’t matter who they are, it matters how you position yourself so they can easily find you.

Step 1: Know What You’re Launching

It seems simple enough, but if you don’t have clarity on what you’re selling, you won’t get clear results. When I started my health coaching business, I wanted to do some one-on-one coaching, hold a few workshops here and there, and offer a couple of one-off services like pantry purges and grocery store tours. If all that sounds wishy-washy, it’s because it was. Since then I’ve streamlined my services, but it’s a good lesson in knowing what you want to offer and understanding what your niche audience needs.

Take the time to determine what you’re offering (and what you’ll charge). It could be:

  • 50-minute one-on-one coaching sessions
  • Small group workshops held 6 times per year
  • A Primal-inspired cookbook or workout plan
  • An in-person talk at your local gym or co-op
Step 2: Get Clear on Your Goals

Think about what you’d like to accomplish with your launch. Again, it’s crucial to get really clear on this step. Once you decide on your goals, visualize them happening. Remember, visualizing is different than wishing or thinking about something. It’s embracing the feeling of having already achieved your goal. Ask yourself:

  • Do I want to have a full schedule of one-on-ones on Mondays and Tuesdays?
  • Does the sound of securing 8 new clients a month feel right?
  • How about selling 50 cookbooks within the first month of promoting it?
  • Or getting 35 people to attend my in-person event?
Step 3: Decide How You’ll Promote It

Most people do their research online before buying a product or service, so understanding where your niche hangs out is important. Are they on Instagram? Facebook? YouTube? Your email list? There are different ways to drive traffic to what you’re launching (including free and paid options), but you have to have a plan. For the purposes of this post, we’ll focus on free, online options.

Free traffic is a great way to get new eyes on your services, workshop, or brand new book, especially when you’re just starting out and you don’t have tons of extra cash. Different forms of free traffic include:

  • Blogging
  • Social media
  • Your email list

The key here is to map out and create all of your launch emails, social media posts, and blog posts ahead of time so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. Using a content calendar like this one can help. You might also consider setting up a scheduler to automatically post your content.

Whichever forms of traffic you decide on, remember that you have to be consistent. That means posting regularly, keeping your content on-brand, and making sure your message is clear. That doesn’t mean bombarding potential clients with a hard sell every time you post. You have to offer value, evoke emotion, and show them how great their lives will be when they book a Discovery Call with you, sign up for your workshop, or start flipping through your book.

On average, it takes 7-10 posts to get through to your audience, so don’t be shy about over-posting or feel like you’re harassing them. Don’t be afraid to drip out content or give free advice on your blog posts, emails, and social media pages, either. You want people to be as excited about what you’re launching as you are.

Step 4: Be Specific in Your Call-to-Action

Put yourself in your niche’s shoes for a minute. What do you want their next step to be? Maybe they’ve been seeing posts and emails about a new health coach who helps busy working moms transition from eating a SAD diet to a keto-focused one. Now what? If you want your niche to take action, you have to tell them what to do next. That’s called a call-to-action.

You’ve made it easy for your niche to find you, but is it easy for them to take the next step? Don’t make the mistake of doing all this hard work and not following through with a solid CTA. Depending on what you’re launching, it could be:

  • Book Your Free Session (linked to the online scheduler on your website)
  • Grab My Top Tips For Keto On-the-Go (linked to the opt-in form for your email list)
  • Get a Sneak Peek at My Book (linked to where they can buy or download your new book)
  • Only 2 Spots Left! (linked to tickets for your next in-person talk)
Step 5: Close the Sale

Even with all that hard work, not everyone who sees your post or email will make the purchase. In fact, only about 2% of your traffic will convert to a sale without additional relationship building—meaning that if 100 people click your call-to-action, on average, two of them will book the Discovery Call, buy the book, or sign up for your talk.

To reach the remaining 98%, you have to nurture the relationship you’ve started with your leads. That’s where things like putting on a Facebook Live and engaging with your audience in the comments of your social media posts come in. Or better yet, get them on your subscriber list so you can continue to grow the relationship and give them ongoing reasons to trust you as an authority in your niche. The goal is to keep the conversation going to lower the barrier to entry, and watch as leads become sales.

Summary

Creating a winning strategy is crucial to the success of your launch. It’s a lot easier than you might think, too. Take some time to review these steps and really consider what this looks like for you. The best part is, once you get comfortable with this process, you can use it anytime you’re launching new services, workshops, books, or even a brand new business.

Step 1: Know What You’re Launching
Step 2: Get Clear on Your Goals
Step 3: Decide How You’ll Promote It
Step 4: Be Specific in Your Call-to-Action
Step 5: Close the Sale!

One of my greatest passions since early adulthood has been health and fitness. Yet, I can honestly say that my health has had its fair share of ups and downs over the last 35 years.

My generation played outside…we didn’t have computers back then. I participated in sports, I was very active, and I was lean and strong. My work was also very physical, so I stayed fit until my early 30s. A progressive shoulder injury ultimately led me to a sales career. I then discovered a hidden talent: the ability to pack on weight… 60 pounds in less than 3 months. This also led to foot, ankle, knee, hip and lower back issues.

In 2002, I became a personal trainer. In 2003, I also started coaching. In the beginning of my career, I took my clients through brutal workouts, but over time I switched to workouts designed to alleviate pain and correct muscular and skeletal imbalances.

In 2009, I discovered The Primal Blueprint. This was the greatest health and fitness concept I’d ever come across and it took my health and fitness to an entirely new level.

At the time the Paleo/Primal diet flew in the face of conventional wisdom. Ten years later, it’s practically mainstream… because it made perfect sense and because it flat out works! Over the next 5 years, my strength and energy levels increased as the body fat decreased. Life was good.

And then suddenly, it wasn’t.

From June 2014 – May 2015, I was crushed by some major life challenges. As a result, I suffered from depression and emotional eating and drinking. I had officially hit rock bottom! By May 2015 I had lost most of my strength gains, and a lot of muscle mass, but I had ballooned up to 220 pounds. At this point I had enough. I needed a change. I needed to start over.

In July 2015, I moved to Portland, Oregon, which proved to be one of the best things I had ever done. I started working out again and I became extremely active. I was back on track!

I found myself adhering more and more to the Primal Blueprint Laws once again. After going Primal again, by November 2016, I had lost 90 pounds of body fat and I added back some muscle. For the first time in my life I had 6-pack abs…at the age of 53! And I’ve kept it off!

In the fall of 2017, I discovered Primal Health Coach Certification program. I was officially certified in early 2018. Since I already had a fitness background, this was an absolute no-brainer for me! The Primal lifestyle changed my life, and I decided to make it my mission to help others as well. I’ve overcome many obstacles: physical issues, chronic pain, rapid weight gain, depression, emotional eating, food addiction and alcoholism.

Since receiving my certification…

What I have learned through the Primal Health Coaching program has allowed me to serve all types of clients, with different needs, at a higher level than I ever dreamed possible. Since graduating, I’ve been building my health coaching business, creating my website, posting on social media and reaching out to friends, family and past clients for referrals. But the best thing I’ve done is to network with a local chiropractor. One of my areas of expertise is pain reduction, so this was a great fit for both of us.

The more I get to know different Primal Health Coaches, the more I’m amazed at how different their lives look. There’s Adan Rios, who you met back in February, a full-time employee for Virta Health—a company in Denver, Colorado dedicated to reversing type 2 diabetes in 100 million people by 2025. Then there’s entrepreneur Rachel Barber, who runs her health coaching business helping chronically ill women heal, and works 100% remotely from her RV.

Not only is Erin our Product Manager here at the Primal Health Coach Institute, she’s also owner of eat.simple, her successful health coaching practice that she operates out of her home in the Canadian Rockies. On top of that, Erin stays true to her roots by teaching group fitness classes at her local gym—something she’s been dedicated to for the past 25 years.

You might wonder how Erin fits this all into one day. She does it by following her philosophy of Hustle Just Enough—a motto (and one of her favorite hashtags) she lives by in order to avoid the burnout she faced in her former career working in the corporate world.

6:00 a.m.: The first thing Erin does is make a pot of green tea, which she admits to drinking gallons of. After that, it’s time to check email. Her inbox serves as a daily to-do list, so checking it and clearing out the junk at the beginning of the day helps Erin stay organized. She also spends a few minutes tidying up what she calls her “crab shell.” Erin is a Cancer (the crab of the Zodiac) and an introvert, so she requires an orderly, welcoming space to be her best self.

6:30 a.m.: Erin works full-time for the Primal Health Coach Institute, developing curriculum, supporting students, reviewing market trends in the health coaching space, and presenting at conferences like Paleo f(x)—in addition to about a million other things.

Some days, she’ll work for a couple of hours at home, or enjoy a more reliable WiFi connection at a coffee shop in the city; other days she’ll head to the gym to teach a morning fitness class, and hit the weight room before getting back to work.

10:30 a.m.: To avoid burnout, Erin takes lots of short breaks throughout the day. This may mean going outside to lie in the sun for 15-30 minutes, sipping green tea on the couch, washing dishes or putting away laundry (another perk of working from home), or throwing a ball for her dog. Erin also makes time to be with her horses, saying, “for me, it’s the most meditative and peaceful thing I can do to be present.”

1:00 p.m.: Breakfast isn’t until early to mid-afternoon. Erin’s a firm believer in the benefits of intermittent fasting, and typically fasts for 18-20 hours each day. When she does finally eat, it’s an experience, and it almost always involves beef and/or eggs. She says, “I like to open my day of eating with a beautiful, bountiful feast I can love, respect and admire,” a concept she tries to instill in her eat.simple clients. She adds, “rather than fearing food, feel lucky that you get to eat it!”

2:30 p.m.: Because of her busy schedule, Erin only takes on 6 to 8 clients at a time. Her company, eat.simple, focuses on helping men and women achieve effortless relationships with food, something she knows a lot about. Every week, Erin schedules one 30-minute coaching session via video conferencing with each of her clients. She spends even more time preparing for those calls, emailing her active client roster with weekly check-in info (which also includes her famous pep talks), and engaging with the eat.simple community Facebook group, where all of her current and past clients can ask her and each other questions.

5:30 p.m.: Of course, running a business involves working on the business too, so she makes posting on social media a priority every day. Erin gets 75% of her business from Instagram, sharing musings from throughout her day, plus occasional health and nutrition tips.

She knows sharing an authentic look at her day-to-day life connects her with her ideal audience. And the fact that she has nearly 11k followers on the ‘gram is proof of that. Erin knows it’s really easy to get addicted to social media too, so she limits her time to one hour per day, setting an alarm to remind her when her time’s up.

Erin also spends time on her weekly blog, and sends an email out to her subscribers about once a month, a lower frequency that goes against Best Practices but one she’s happy with, since as a consumer, she hates getting too many emails.

Her best advice when it comes to social content? “Don’t reinvent the wheel—use your content in multiple places!” Erin repurposes rants from the week or references previous blog posts on her social media and email marketing channels. And while the content varies, Erin always includes a call-to-action on her emails to learn more about her signature program—8 Weeks to Effortless.

7:00 p.m.: Over the years, Erin has naturally and organically moved into one-meal-a-day territory, but if she does have a second meal, it’s a simple protein and vegetable. Or, maybe a small charcuterie plate of olives, meat, cheese, nuts, berries, dark chocolate, and a glass or two of dry Italian red wine. She believes in “front-loading” her meals, with the bulk of her daily calories consumed in the early part of the day.

8:00 p.m.: Work days are typically about 14 hours long, but she loves it, and says it’s nothing compared to the grind of going into an office every day—sitting in traffic, making small talk with co-workers, endless unproductive meetings, and fluorescent lights. Not to mention the non-stop candy dishes and lunch room donuts.

8:30 p.m.: After work, it’s time for chores around her farm, a peaceful 15-acre lot in the Alberta, Canada foothills. Relaxing might include watching Netflix (with her blue blockers on, of course), reading, or soaking in her hot tub listening to the sounds of birds or neighboring coyotes.

10:00 p.m.: Sleep is non-negotiable for Erin, so at 10:00 p.m., it’s lights out. She says, “just as I love and respect amazing food, I feel the same way about sleep,” adding, “I think one of the reasons I sleep so well is because I’m finally living my true expression of self. It feels really good.”

Where You’ll Find Erin Next

Despite the fact that she works hard all day, nearly every day, Erin loves that she gets to take the reins of her career and keep her mental and spiritual health intact while simultaneously doing good for the world.

When she’s not nurturing students and grads at the Primal Health Coach Institute, working with her own clients at eat.simple, or leading group fitness classes at her local gym, you’ll find Erin co-hosting Health Coach Radio, a new podcast designed for health coaches, by health coaches. Together with her colleague, Laura Rupis, the duo record anywhere from one to three episodes every Friday, talking to experts like Ali Watts, Dr. William Davis, and our own Mark Sisson. If you haven’t caught one of their episodes yet, you can listen here.

Post injury, Elle switched gears and began a writing career in sketch comedy and later authored the well-known book The Paleo Thyroid Solution. During this episode, Elle opens up about keeping this injury hidden away for most of her adult life. We discuss vulnerability, opening up and dealing with the shame that often times accompanies living with a disability. I started my personal primal journey back in 2009 with my first success story featured on Mark’s Daily Apple in 2010. Five years later, I became one of the original “Legacy” Primal Blueprint Certified Experts completing the first iteration of the Primal Health Coach Institute course—recently passing the recertification exam and studying all of the extensive information in the amazing Business Resource Center. It feels great to stay up-to-date on the latest Primal Health Coach education!

After a long career as an educator in numerous international schools, I retired from my last full-time position at the International School Bangkok in Thailand in June 2018. Following my retirement from education, I started my new small business venture as a Primal Health Coach here in Bangkok with a good number of clients ready to sign up for my services. I have been a coach for most of my 35+ years in education, almost entirely with student-athletes on various sports teams, so moving into Primal Health Coaching has been a smooth transition.

For the previous few years, I had been teaching free large group fitness classes for the teachers and staff at the school. Attendance was always quite good, with anywhere from 15-30+ people showing up each week for my Fitness Fun sessions. I am now paid by the school to lead two classes a week (people still attend free of charge), now known Primal Power Fitness Fun sessions.

Additionally, a number of teachers, parents, staff and downtown Bangkok residents have become Primal Power clients. I work with 25-30 people on a weekly basis as their health coach and/or fitness trainer.

This new venture has been incredibly gratifying with wonderful client results. It feels so great to be pursuing my true passion in life—passing on my knowledge and expertise of all things PRIMAL!!

Besides coaching and teaching, I have been partnering with a paleo-friendly grocery company in Bangkok, offering seminars, workshops and presentations on various health and wellness topics to a variety of audiences in the city. My presentations always include a number of concepts from the Primal Blueprint lifestyle, which inevitably bring up both typical questions and surprising comments from conventional wisdom viewpoints.

For all of this, I am incredibly grateful to Mark Sisson himself (I believe we are both the same age), and to the entire Primal Health Coach Institute community: program administrators, graduates and current students. I continue to learn so much on a daily basis from the facebook posts, webinars and PHCI blog posts. And of course, from the Mark’s Daily Apple posts where it all started!

At 66 years young, I can honestly say that I have more consistent energy on a daily basis, and I believe that I am physically stronger than I was 20 years ago! Following a primal lifestyle has been incredibly effective, and I genuinely believe that others will benefit similarly if they adopt the basic primal rules of living awesomely!

As they say, the numbers don’t lie. So if you’re one of the 109,000 health coaches making a difference in our world (or considering enrolling to become one of them), you’ll definitely want to read today’s post.

Health coaching is a $6 billion market with no signs of slowing down. In fact, the industry is expected to reach nearly $8 billion by 2022, with more than 120,000 health coaches in business. That doesn’t even include the $3 billion weight loss subset of the market.

Why Such Fast Growth?

Unfortunately, chronic diseases are on the rise, with more than 60% of Americans battling a chronic disease, and one in four struggling with multiple diseases. On top of that, the amount of time patients have with their doctor is rapidly decreasing, with the average interaction lasting only seven minutes. That’s not nearly enough time to understand someone’s symptoms, make a diagnosis, and prescribe a quick-fix drug that has potential detrimental side effects (not that you’d want that anyway).

In addition, this article from the Mayo Clinic states that we’ll have a shortfall of 100,000 physicians by the year 2030. Plus, 70% of health care costs can be attributed to preventable diseases, including the $101 billion spent on diabetes care, and $88 billion spent on the most common form of heart disease. And by the year 2024, almost a fifth of America’s economy will be spent on health care.

That’s Where You Come In

As health coaches, our job is to spend time actively listening to our clients and understanding their struggles, their goals, and any obstacles that might be standing in their way.

We strive to motivate, inspire confidence, and provide accountability as we coach our clients to change their behaviors (like eating a Standard American Diet, lack of physical activity, constant stress, and more) that lead to chronic disease. Of course, our genes may play a role in predisposing us to certain diseases, but, as you know, genetic factors aren’t ultimately what make us sick.

Where Health Coaches Are Working

With the strong business-building curriculum offered by the Primal Health Coach Institute, you might choose to go the entrepreneurial route, building and growing your own practice like a lot of health coaches do, including our own Rachel Barber. Or, you might prefer working for someone else at a gym, an integrative medical clinic, a corporation, or within one of the fastest growing trends—wellness tourism.

According to the Global Wellness Institute, wellness tourism (things like hot springs vacations, yoga or meditation retreats, and trips that focus on self-care) is a whopping $639.4 billion market. Why such a large number? Because our society is chronically overworked, overstressed, and overly attached to our digital devices—spending an average of 10 hours and 29 minutes a day looking at them, according to a 2016 Nielsen study.

Even if you decide to work within one of these growing wellness trends, you can still be self-employed, like the thousands of successful Primal Health Coaches doing just that right now.

The Benefits of Being Self-Employed

Here on the blog, we give you weekly tips and resources for building and growing your health coaching practice, creating a deeper connection with your clients, and highlighting everything from influential health coaches to inspire you, to must-read books to transform your health coaching business.

Another reason to go the self-employment route? Unlimited income potential. You likely got into health coaching to help others heal, but don’t dismiss the fact that you can make a lot of money doing it, charging anywhere from $75 to over $200 a session. And that’s just for one-on-ones. Add classes and workshops, speaking engagements, and products or books to the mix, and you’ve got a recipe for a healthy annual income.

Getting Yourself Out There

More than 80% of your potential clients are out there researching your company online before investing in what you have to offer, so if you don’t have a website, now is a good time to create one. Also, consider your social media presence. Up to 90% of B2C companies say social media is the most effective content marketing tactic. Currently, Facebook has 2.38 billion users and Instagram has 1 billion monthly users, with 500 million of them checking their feed every day and 60% of them actively looking for new products and service (i.e. your health coaching services).

So, how do you know which social media channel is right for you? It all depends on your niche audience and where they spend their time. According to this article, 62% of men and 72% of women under 65 use Facebook, and the largest demographic of Instagram users are 13-29. Based on the statistics in this article, it’s worth your while to blog, too. Companies with a blog get 97% more links to their website and are 13x more likely to have a positive return on investment for their efforts.

Summary

The data is in, and there’s never been a better time to be a health coach. We’re leading the charge in health care—helping prevent and reverse chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure, supporting physicians who need our expertise in behavior change, and following our passions working within some of the fastest growing trends in the industry. We’re making a difference, and if these statistics are any sign of what’s to come, the world needs us now more than ever.
