We get an increasing number of inquiries asking what the future for ISESteroids is, and whether we plan to move to VSCode. Here is some background, and some answers! Disclaimer: the infos we summarized here on PowerShell and related technologies represent our conclusions. They could be wrong. If so, please drop us a message. Future of Windows PowerShell In May this year, PowerShell inventor Jeffrey Snover explained at psconf.eu that Windows PowerShell is “done”. It will continue to be part of current and future versions of Windows, and continue to ship out of the box. Based on full .NET Framework, it supports almost everything a Windows Admin needs to control. Windows PowerShell will not evolve anymore, though. According to Jeffrey, all future investments go into PowerShell Core (aka PowerShell 6). The name “PowerShell 6” is to a tiny bit misleading as PowerShell Core is not the technical continuation of Windows PowerShell. Instead, it is a different breed, based on .NET Core which is basically a subset of the full .NET  Framework. Windows PowerShell vs. PowerShell Core PowerShell Core by design cannot target all the things Windows PowerShell can, and many existing modules won’t currently run in PowerShell Core. For example, neither the ActiveDirectory module nor Exchange are currently supported in PowerShell Core. Graphical user interfaces based on WinForms or WPF won’t run, either. PowerShell Core’s unique selling point at this point is its cross-platform reach: the smaller .NET Core can run not just on Windows but also on Linux and MacOS. This is…

Anyone who attended psconf.eu 2017 and would like to share some of his or her pictures, please do so! Package Pictures in Batch of ZIPs First, package your pictures into ZIP files. In order for these ZIP files to not grow into huge files, here is a script that takes all of your pictures and distributes them into ZIP files with 10 pictures each: # pack 10 pics per ZIP $groupsize = 10 # ADJUST THIS PATH so it points to your pics: $pictureFolder = "$HOME\Documents\psconf17\fotos" $yourName = 'Tobias' # creates chunks of 10 picture files each: $files = Get-ChildItem -Path $pictureFolder -Filter *.jpg -File -Recurse | ForEach-Object -Begin { $c=0; [Collections.ArrayList]$list = @() } -Process { $c++ if ($c % $groupsize) { $null = $list.Add($_) } else { Write-Output @(,$list.Clone()) $list.Clear() } } -end { Write-Output @(,$list.Clone()) $list.Clear() } | # compresses chunks of 10 pics into individual ZIP files: ForEach-Object -Begin { $part = 0 } -Process { $part++ $_ | Compress-Archive -DestinationPath "$PictureFolder\pic_$YourName Part_$part.zip" } Use Own Storage Space, and Share Links Only! Next, upload your ZIP files to your own storage space. We have only limited storage capacity, so please only share LINKS to your ZIP files.w Finally, log into our slack space at www.powershell.live, and post the link(s) to your ZIP files in channel #pics. Sharing is caring – many thanks for sharing your pictures! Tobias

We just released ISESteroids 2.3, and you can download it or install it directly from the PowerShellGallery (on PowerShell 5). Note: If the download link reports an older version, please refresh your browser cache. The download will get you the latest version, no matter what your browser says. ISESteroids 2.3 comes with an exciting list of new features and a lot of smaller things to improve performance and fix issues. A full list can be found here. Now to the new key features. We added a bunch of videos to illustrate what they do: 1. Advanced Search Search across multiple locations, based on file name or content: 2. HelpCache Use PowerShell help no matter what. No Administrator privileges needed anymore to install help files, and your computer does not need to be touched. 3. Test Arguments Submit test arguments to your scripts, and submit these arguments when test driving your scripts in a clean console as well: Vertical Guidelines Use vertical guidelines to custom-align text, or get a visual hint when your code lines exceed a given length. More details here.

Beginning in version 2.2.0.4, which is currently available as beta version, you can now submit arguments to your scripts. This can be very useful to test drive how your scripts accept and process arguments. And it’s simple. Submitting Arguments Simply right-click the green “play” button to open a new context menu. It allows you to define arguments, and the arguments you enter are treated as if you had submitted them with the call to your script. Once you defined arguments, run your script: click the “play” button, or press F5. In the interactive pane, you will notice how your arguments are appended to the command that runs the script. To test drive this, your script could define a param() block, or you could use the variable $args to get access to the submitted arguments. Disabling Automatic Dot Sourcing You may not have noticed before, but ISE runs scripts differently than the PowerShell console. In the PowerShell console, when you run a script, it runs in its own scope. So once the script completes, all variables defined in the script (and all functions as well) are cleaned up. ISE in contrast always runs scripts dot-sourced. So a script shares the scope with the caller context. This eases debugging because all variables and all functions defined in a script stay alive. ISESteroids makes sure you “see” the difference: when you run a script in ISE with ISESteroids loaded, in the interactive console you see a “dot” in front of the script call. Starting…

Thank you for your great feedback! We just published a new beta version (2.2.0.5) which superseeds the 2.2.0.4 beta published earlier today. It is available for download here: Note that beta versions will not be available in the PowerShell Gallery. The new beta version fixes a number of issues, but as always adds new features as well: You can now decide whether the function navigator combo includes regions as well, and can decide whether regions will appear sorted alphabetically, or in the order in which they were defined. Simply right-click the function navigator bar to see a context menu. The same context menu now also provides quick access to the indentation settings, so you can easily decide the indent size and type (tabs or spaces) There is a new toolbar button that adds vertical guide lines aligned to the current indentation settings. A full list of all changes can be found in the version history. Please comment so we know if things are working right for you, and what additional ideas you may have. Cheerio Tobias

There are two highly innovative features that were introduced in ISESteroids 2.1.0.50. Most of you may not have noticed, so I’d like to give you a little teaser. Command History Search Command History Search becomes better with every additional day you use ISESteroids. As you may have noticed, ISESteroids stores your command history, so when you launch ISESteroids the next day, all of your interactive commands are still there  – simply press ArrowUp to browse through your Command History. Now there is an even smarter way to get back to your commands. Simply start typing something that you know was part of a command in the past. You may want to simply enter the name of a cmdlet you use often. Now, hold CTRL and press ArrowUp. Each time you press ArrowUp, ISESteroids automatically searches your personal command history, and shows commands that match your current input. The status bar also reports how many matches were found. This is an extremely powerful technique. Most of the times, we all use the same set of PowerShell commands. With the new Command History Search, you simply enter the beginning of your command, then hold CTRL and press ArrowUp. Chances are ISESteroids can autocomplete what you had in mind, with all parameters and arguments. Press ArrowUp multiple times to see all matches. Just keep in mind that once you autocompleted your command, this is your new input. So when you release CTRL, and start over again, ISESteroids obviously now takes the current input…

ISESteroids 2.2 is almost done. Today, we decided to invite anyone interested to look at it and test drive the beta. The link to the current beta version can always be found in version history. Or, you can download the beta here: (Note: Beta versions will not be available on the  PSGallery because we do not want to confuse anyone who auto-updates ISESteroids from the Gallery based on new versions and suddenly finds himself with a beta version). To use the beta version, installation does not differ from production version: download and unzip the file, run install.bat – that is it. Who can participate? Anyone can. The beta version shares the requirements with the production version: either use the trial period, or your license. Your existing licenses will just work fine with ISESteroids 2.2. Remember, we have a pretty simple and straight model: pay once, enjoy many. Free updates for ISESteroids 2 in all of its subversions and updates. Definitely no maintenance fees, subscriptions, or other follow up costs. So a better question would be: who should participate? If you are curious, hungry for more, and enjoy providing feedback, then this is right for you. If you are super busy and just want ISESteroids to help you get your job done, then better stick to the production version. While the beta version is very very stable, it is just not fully tested (which obviously is the whole point of the beta program). What to expect? The current beta version is 2.1.0.65, and…
