On the sad news of Gavin Smith passing, the Poker Night in America crew wanted to express a few thoughts about one of our favorite players to ever join our table.
It only took a few moments after meeting Gavin to learn a few things about him. First, you would learn immediately that he was genuine. He would tell you exactly what was on his mind, without hesitation or qualification. It’s often said that every word spoken before the word “but” is BS, and Gavin never used “but”. He just said everything that came after, and left you to deal with it.
Which you usually could, because the next thing that became apparent in Gavin’s presence was that he was hilarious. Swarthy, Canadian-accented humor rolled out of him effortlessly, and cut any tension that his candor might create. As creators of poker entertainment content, we can’t overstate how great it was to have someone like Gavin at our table keeping it active and funny.
Between the lines of his jokes was a rapier wit that never seemed to dull, even in the midst of his well-known excesses. His intelligence was considerable, and seemed to be only matched by his restlessness in life.
The final thing that needs to be said is that Gavin Smith knew all the names of the members of our production crew. He may have been the only poker player that has been on our show that can claim that. He partied with us, and cracked us up, and he’d ask about our lives from event to event. It seems small, but to us, it was a big deal. For that, for his candor, and his humor, he’ll always have our love and respect.
Here are some of the photos we have of Gavin from his appearances on our show. Please feel free to use these in any way you see fit in your remembrances, with no attribution required.

Survivor Champions Night (Season 1 Week 10), a theme pitched to production by Tyson Apostol, gave new meaning to the phrase ‘giving the people what they want.’ Apostol already graced PNL with his presence in week 4’s Reality Stars Night so having him back was a no-brainer. Fans of Survivor hit the jackpot as this table produced some incredible insights into the most memorable moments of the 36-season program
Seat 1: Jeremy Collins
Seat 2: Kim Spradlin
Seat 3: Stapes
Seat 4: Boston Rob Mariano
Seat 5: Jonathan Little
Seat 6: Tyson Apostol
Apostol started things off with a splash by ordering a glass of milk. Actual, milk. At the poker table.
“You’re drinking milk?” – Stapes
“Uhhh, yes. The dairy council of America says it’s the best beverage you can drink”- Tyson
It’s no surprise that Survivor superfan & poker guru Jonathan Little would go on to win quite a bit but what was a surprise was Tyson revealing how he made fire to win his season 27 (he may have “cheated”) Tune in to view the most-watched episode of this season!
With Joe on the road in Monte Carlo, Poker Night Live turned to announcer Tiffany Michelle to host Rob Riggle & Friends.
Seat 1: Actor, Oliver Hudson
Seat 2: Breaker of prisons, Amaury Nolasco
Seat 3: Guest Host Tiffany Michelle
Seat 4: Comedy Super Star Rob Riggle
Seat 5: From New Girl, scruffy-hunk Jake Johnson
Seat 6: Actor/Ghost whisperer, Haley Joel Osment
There was no shortage of laughs, or the misreading of hands which made for some entertaining poker bloopers. It was clear from early on that Jake Johnson came to play. Johnson revealed that a former job required him to play at several casinos in Los Angeles and regaled the table with tales of the Gardens Casino before the $90 million renovation.
“I think I’m underdressed”
It wasn’t long before Tiffany put Jake Johnson to the test. Holding JJ , Jake bet the turn on Q 7 5 Q and Tiffany (JTo, no pair no draw) raised to $130. Johnson made the call the river brought the 4 which completed many of the possible draws. Tiffany moved all-in and Jake called correctly to double up. This would not be Tiffany’s only bluff of the evening but we’ll save that one for your viewing pleasure.
Each Week Celebrities will go All-In at The Gardens Casino in Los Angeles Playing for a Live TV Audience on CBS Sports Network
Chicago, IL (February 21, 2018) – The hit TV series Poker Night in America (PNIA), produced by Rush Street Productions, is excited to announce the launch of a new LIVE “celebrity” version of its TV series. Poker Night LIVE will air on CBS Sports Network, starting this spring on March 20, 2018. In response to the popularity of its live poker events streaming on Twitch®, Rush Street Productions wanted to bring that same exhilarating experience to traditional TV, welcoming a larger audience, many of whom don’t use internet streaming platforms.
“We’ve been re-imagining TV poker for the past four years, making it more fan friendly with famous faces and a fun atmosphere,” said Todd Anderson, President of Rush Street Productions. “This is the latest exciting step as we continue to revolutionize how fans can watch poker. Anything can happen on live TV and probably will with a table filled with celebrities! The viewers will be able to see and hear everything that’s happening, just as if they are another player sitting at the table.”
Poker Night LIVE will debut at 10pm Eastern, 7pm Pacific on CBS Sports Network starting March 20th and will air, every Tuesday, for 13 weeks. The live show will be a more celebrity centric version of the popular PNIA cash game, only with lower stakes so the stars can just have fun and let loose, with no worry about making mistakes. The show will be shot on location from the Gardens Casino, located just south of Hollywood, CA. Phil Hellmuth, 14 time WSOP bracelet winner, has signed on for the first show. Other celebrities appearing will soon be announced.
“This will be unlike any poker show currently on TV,” said Anderson. “Poker Night LIVE will be more like a Hollywood home game brought directly into viewers homes with lots of interesting guests, lots of laughs and lots of live action.”
Poker Night LIVE will also be trying something completely new, as host Joe Stapleton will leave the announcing booth to take a seat at the TV table.
“Stapes (Joe Stapleton) is a huge talent, and a blast to play poker with! With his comedic skills and vast experience at calling some of the most iconic poker hands of all time – we can’t wait to watch him mix it up with Celebs on Live TV,” explained Poker Night LIVE’s recently named Executive Producer Jonnie Kedj, known for his work on other shows including Celebrity Poker Showdown, the World Poker Tour® and the PokerStars® Big Game.
Poker Night LIVE will be an addition to the successful PNIA series that has been airing on CBS Sports since June 2014 and has just been renewed for yet another season.

The Hit TV Series Teams Up With Industry Innovators To Bring The Next Evolution in Tournament Poker
Chicago, Illinois – July 17, 2017 –Poker Night in America, the high stakes poker series that airs every Monday & Sunday on CBS Sports Network, is adding a new sponsor to their Featured Partner roster with Sit & Go 2.0, the revolutionary new prize pool system for live and online Sit & Go Tournaments.
This innovative format is injecting an exciting new concept to the traditional sit-and-go. The rules in poker gameplay for Sit & Go 2.0 are exactly the same as a standard sit & go, but what makes it unique is the prize pool modification that happens before the cards are shuffled-up and dealt.
The game begins with the dealer dealing out 9 cards, face down around the table. The player to the left of the dealer button then begins by revealing their card. A red card means stop, and a black card means go. If a red card is shown, the prize pool stays the same as outlined during registration. The cards are then shuffled and the regular sit-and-go resumes. However, if the player reveals a black card, the prize pool increases and the next player reveals their card. With each black card that is revealed, the prize pool and number of players paid increases significantly. The prize pool keeps increasing until a red card is revealed. Unlike a regular sit-and-go, where there’s a set prize pool for every game, the prize pool for 2.0 games have yet to be determined, adding an element of chance to each game!
“This new sponsorship is a perfect fit for us,” said Todd Anderson, President at Rush Street Productions, the company behind Poker Night. “We exist to make traditional poker fun again, and Sit & Go 2.0 has just reinvigorated a traditional form of the game, so our goals of our two companies are perfectly aligned – to make poker more fun and accessible.”
Sit & Go 2.0’s branding will begin to appear in nationally-broadcast episodes of Poker Night in America starting in early August, and will include prominent placement of their logo in-show, on Poker Night’s social media pages, on Twitch livestreams, and will also include commercial runs during the breaks.
