Pianist GéNIA demonstrating yoga exercises for pianists

About Piano-Yoga®

Piano-Yoga® method is suitable for pianists of all levels and ages, and offers a unique holistic system of playing which combines the fundamentals of the traditional Russian piano schools with principles from Eastern philosophies, especially yoga. The method utilises aspects of movement, gravity and breathing, creating a more natural and organic approach to piano playing, performing and teaching. The aims are in focusing your piano practice, improving concentration, building strength in the fingers and hands, establishing good posture at the piano, and conquering performance nerves. Piano-Yoga® radically improves technique, and unblocks tension.

The method has been featured in major music publications in the UK and internationally:

‘It really does work.’ – Piano Professional Magazine, UK

‘I’d highly recommend it.’- Music Teacher Magazine

‘I would encourage any pianist, amateurs and professionals alike, to sign up to one of [GéNIA’s] courses!’- International Piano

“The 21st -century answer to playing the piano” – Yoga and Health Magazine, UK

About ‘Conquering Performance Nerves’ Workshop

This particular workshop will focus on Conquering Performance Nerves. Just in time for the summer ABRSM graded exams, as well as the end of term in many music institutions, this workshop aims to provide additional help to those who find themselves suffering from performance nerves. Aiming at the medium to advanced level, amateur and professional musicians, the participants will be invited to take their shoes off and wear loose clothing in order to be able to do various exercises. Please note that this event is also suitable for musicians playing other instruments, and is not only limited to piano players. If you would like to play at the workshop, whether just one page or a whole piece, please advise GéNIA at the start of the event.

GéNIA’s first Piano-Yoga® book was published in 2009 in conjunction with the creation of the Piano-Yoga® Studio, which is housed at the famous Schott Music shop in London, offering a variety of playing methods which encourage individuality and self-confidence. GéNIA’s Piano-Yoga® project is represented online at www.piano-yoga.com where free educational resources are provided, such as the Piano-Yoga® article series, exercises designed specifically for pianists, performance preparation advice and useful downloads. GéNIA qualified in 2008 as B.W.Y. (British Wheel of Yoga) teacher and trained with The Life Centre®, London.

The end of February and the beginning of March is a special time of year, when the days are a little longer, yet the cold winter still holds,  Piano-Yoga® invites you to a special opportunity of enjoying regular piano lessons from the comfort and warmth of your own home.

Wherever in the country or even abroad you live, this is a very convenient way of maintaining regular piano tuition. Lessons can take place via Skype or Face Time at a pre-arranged time, as long as a webcam with a laptop is positioned close to your piano and your broadband connection is good.  You can experience an authentic feeling of warmth and proximity,  as if the teacher was in the same room as yourself. Also, some people prefer the familiarity of practicing on their own piano. Who needs motorway traffic jams, train delays, tiredness or any additional stress?

In a few words of introduction, Piano-Yoga®’s multi-dimensional method of piano tuition combines the fundamentals of classical Russian piano school with Eastern philosophies, particularly yoga. The aim of the method is to improve your level of mindfulness while playing, and to enhance your enjoyment of the experience. Exercises effectively build the strength in fingers and hands, establish good posture at the piano and conquer pre-performance anxiety.

The Russian virtuoso pianist GéNIA, the inventor of the method,  particularly emphasises the high value of enjoyment in Piano-Yoga®’s education. No matter what level your playing is, the friendly and highly professional Piano-Yoga® teachers will start your education from analysing and studying you as whole person, taking into consideration your well-being, aiming to balance of your mind, body and spirit. Please see FAQ on our website for more insights.

If you have been considering taking up piano lessons for a while, this could be just a perfect way for you. To arrange a primary assessment session and find out more please call Piano-Yoga® on  020 7226 9829 or email: education@piano-yoga.com

GéNIA teachers Piano-Yoga® at Holistic Day for Pianists in London

This is just a little blog entry from me about the Holistic Day, that I led with renowned educator, blogger and teacher Melanie Spanswick recently in London. I wanted to share with you how wonderful it was to spend the whole day concentrating on Piano-Yoga® and other aspects of piano playing and technique. Melanie’s talks were inspiring; she offered wonderful tips on memorisation and sight-reading, making students practise various things there and then.

I offered a slightly different approach, concentrating on how to obtain the best energy, so you can get the best our of your practice and/or a performance, especially when you were tired or, opposite, too excited to concentrate. Through the various exercises and talks about different energy states, we spent a wonderful afternoon exploring. I concluded my part of the day by going through the details of each stage of my book ‘Piano-Yoga® Transform Your Hands’: 10 Week Course of Piano Exercises.

We had a wonderful variety of students, which included amateur pianists, piano teachers and professional music students.

The atmosphere of Jaque Samuel Pianos, was equally inspiring; we were surrounded by at least 100 pianos and had 4 Fazioli grand pianos in our studio, where we taught.

The students were very receptive and eager and after the day we received wonderful comments such as ‘A most inspiring duette with many useful tips’ from Edi and ‘One of the most interesting days in my life. Thank you so much!’ from Charles.

We look forward to bringing you more events and if you’d like to invite us to come to your area with the Holistic Day Programme please do not hesitate to get in touch!

With love,

GéNIA
