Hot, wet, moist and needed about twice a day..... COFFEE!!! While visiting a very Handsome
man recently in his home he offered to pour me some wine. As we walked into the kitchen I noticed his coffee pot needed some attention and I mean more than soap! If you have a Keurig/Coffee maker, or any kind of hot water drink maker at home, read this before your next pour. Our bodies can fight off bacteria if you sip some mold on accident but after awhile the bacteria in the hot steamy, wet place can grow enough to cause sickness.
COFFEE RUSH CAN TURN INTO BACTERIA SLUSH
The areas that the water sits in to go to the coffee beans is closed with heat and stays closed until you refill it with more water. Now whats going on behind the closed lid, door, compartment between the water and your coffee maker is nastier than Bourbon St after Mardi Gras. Slush in a coffee maker in the area that the water goes through has no where to breathe. Yes your coffee maker needs to breathe to live too!
HOW TO CLEAN THE CREVICES OF THE COFFEE POT EASILY
ROUTINE: the one thing we hate to be on unless we are being paid. Well consider this a paid job because you are paying yourself with cleanliness so you don’t have to miss work due to a bacterial issue.
Trade the coffee beans and water for a 1/2 mix of White Distilled Vinegar and water solution. Brew this mix as if it were your coffee. Vinegar decalcifies and will remove the gunk build up from tap water. Mold spores are growing in the area of your Keurig/Coffee maker so the vinegar is going to not only decalcify it but disinfect it too. Depending on how often you use your coffee maker depends on how often you need to do this step. The average routine can be monthly. Or if it is an office coffee pot we recommend weekly.
Add an equal part of water to vinegar and brew it as if it was your coffee. So wherever you would usually deposit the water you are going to deposit the equal part mix. Brew it and let it sit for about 30 minutes. It may steam more than it does when you are making your coffee but that’s a good sign. Do this step twice.
HOW TO AVOID BAD TASTING COFFEE
The final step is to now leave the areas that you deposit the water in open so that the hot steamy places can breathe and exhale in their cleanliness. Remember that routine cleanliness works better at keeping you and your family healthy rather than a every now and then cleaning because everyone is sick!
LOCAL COFFEE MAKER'S KNOW BEST
During the rush of SXSW in Austin we decided to rush on into a local coffee shop and ask a Barista their inside scoop on how to keep our coffee tasting fresh at home. They understand the rush, but also the routine better than we do, as they keep the flow steady and the pours strong.
The "You get what you pay for" phrase comes to mind when I see other Cleaning Services in the elevators with us. Their dirty mops, buckets full or chemicals and cheap prices usually come at a high cost in the end to your wallet and your HEALTH! If they use their
mop at a home that has an animal that urinated on the floor and use it in your home you would never know. Over time you may begin to get sick and just think it's the office virus but it may not be.
DID THAT SAME RAG CLEAN THE KITCHEN AND THE TOILET?
It sounds nasty we know and seems like a common sense factor but we all know common sense ain't so common! ASK YOUR CLEANING SERVICE WHAT THEY USE AND HOW DO THEY STOP CROSS CONTAMINATION WHILE CLEANING.
VACUUM FILTERS AND BAGS MATTER!
Do you know how many homes with animals were cleaned before they took that vacuum to yours? Pet dander and fibers from other homes can transfer allergens and other toxins to your home if the proper handling isn't taking place. Vacuums have filters and a Hepa filter matters! Filters need to be changed to work and that's a step beyond just changing a vacuum bag. Opt for a cleaning service to use your vacuum or ask them their routine with filter changing and the transfer of pet and other toxins on the vacuum to your home.
ARE YOUR CLEANING PRODUCTS MAKING YOU SICK
Everything that says Eco friendly isn't and every thing that says clean doesn't. Some cleaners may clean a surface but dirty our indoor air quality. We forget to look on the back of a cleaner at the ingredients because the front advertising or scent grabs our attention. Many cleaning services keep their costs down by going to a cheap store to get cheap products. Many products need to be used in a well ventilated area but our homes are anything but well ventilated. We are in a four wall room without windows open spraying a spray which will leave a scent of some sort. If the scent is not from essential oils it could have harmful products that can cause allergies and headaches to become the norm. Air your home out and use an indoor air purifier with a carbon filter to cleanse the air you breathe of whatever product was sprayed.
If price was the factor in hiring the service will price be a factor if they break something? Insurance, workers compensation, and many more insurances factor into pricing. If you consider the cost of all of your personal items, in your personal space would you consider the price they were charging to clean it more? There's also the fact of the non educated cleaning person using the wrong product on the wrong surface. Damages can be done without knowledge because they aren't educated in the products or your surfaces.
DOES THE PERSON CLEANING YOUR HOME HAVE A WARRANT?
It sounds drastic but it's a fact of life. It costs to run background checks and to continue to monitor the backgrounds of employees. It's very important to build trust beyond words when turning the dirt over to someone to clean.
Our homes hold many dirty secrets beyond grease and dust so when going to hire a person to take care of your personal space be personal beyond the cost.
When the flu has struck your house here are the top 5 things my personal Doctor shared with me on how he never gets the flu. I assumed he would push vaccination but instead he said
to keep it simple and keep the simple things routine. Sounds easy until he mentioned how many times we touch our faces in a day.
KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF YOUR FACE
The average person touches there face 4 times an hour. So we get germs on our hands more than we wash our hands so stop touching yourself.
WASH/CLEANSE YOUR HANDS
We inadvertently are going to touch our nose and mouth, so keep the routine of HAND WASHING & ALCOHOL BASED CLEANSERS ROUTINE.
CERTAIN AREAS NEED TO BE DISINFECTED WITH DISINFECTING WIPES OR PAPERTOWELS
Dont worry a tree limb won't go to waste in this effort of paper towel use. Use disinfecting wipes or a disinfecting spray with paper towels rather han sponges or rags. Sponges are a wet, moist breeding ground for germs and reusable rags are just going to spread the germs. Toilet handles, light switches, remotes, sinks handles, door handles, and anything else that gets used frequently by touching first needs to be disinfected.
I know, I know, you're already over the new year resolution of the workouts but I'm not saying run a 10k. A good 30 minute run or workout to get your heart pumping keeps your immune system ready to fight of germs. In the words of Uncle Luke (90's rapper for thoe who don't know) "Don't stop,Get it, Get it"
Uninterrupted sleep is very beneficial to our health. Our immune system will give us what we give it. So the more uninterrupted routine sleep we get the better.
Most people want to call us to clean when they are sick to clean up after them. We do ask that when your home gets hit with any kind of virus or sickness that you disinfect your home yourself so that we do not catch, spread and get sick ourselves. We suggest using www.seventhgeneration.com/Products/Disinfectant
Isn't it ironic that the one place we use to clean our bodies daily is the one place we neglect to clean often? Since the shower isn't somewhere that our guests see when we entertain (usually... wink, wink) we tend to dismiss the need for routine cleaning until we can't see through the glass anymore. Did you know that the main culprit for the image above is
Literally the same thing that we use to clean our bodies? Yes Soap! Soap that we use to clean our body dirt produces soap scum that we tackle to clean off of the shower. Bar soaps contain parrafin wax and when you go to scrub it with a cleanser it just smears. Eventually causing a paste like substance that builds up over time and most people blame not having a hard water softener as the issue.
Theres a simple trick to never clean soap scum again in the shower...
Of course the easiest trick I would personally recommend is to click the link. Your teeth are on a routine schedule for a cleaning service so why not get your house on a routine too?
The Second Easiest Way to Not Deal With Soap Scum in the Shower...
Trade your Bar Soap in for a Liquid Cleanser or Liquid Soap. Liquid Soap is more like a detergent than a soap. Detergent disperses fat and grime instead of attracting it like Bar Soap does. We've been providing housecleaning services in Austin and surrounding areas for over 21 years so please believe we've seen our fare share of showers. It doesn't take long for me to determine if a homeowner has hard water or they use liquid soap.
Since bathrooms haven't become self cleaning yet that means we are still in business and here to help you see through your glass shower doors again. The above video was a before and after (which only took 20 minutes) of a soap scum removal process our housekeepers use. You make the first step by switching from Bar Soap to Liquid cleansers and we will make the second step by providing your home with routine Housekeeping services. Its a win win to stay clean either way!
Cleaning anything glass is never really about the elbow grease applied but the tools used. After cooking a meal on a glass stove top the last thing anyone wants to do is clean before eating right? Especially when you know it's not going to be an easy task. Well I've found the easy in this task and I'm excited to share! First thing you want to do is ....
Consider What You're Using Before Using It!
Think about the hard water building up in your shower. Glass holds onto everything from dry lint to what's in the water itself. So choose to use distilled water in the dilution we are about to make. We are also going to use Distilled White Vinegar. This one bottle of cleaner is one of three steps on making your glass stove top streak free.
The Best Cleaning Solution To Make Your Glass Stovetop Streak Free
You will need a clean and clear spray bottle. Use one part Distilled White Vinegar to Three Parts Distilled Water. Mix together and keep it handy. (Oh you can toss any other glass cleaners you use for other glass cleaning projects out because this inexpensive glass cleaner not only will save you money but time.)
The Most Important Step In Getting Your Glass Stovetop Streak Free
Cut lights off that are above the stove top! This includes any lights shining on the stove top on any way directly. The light will heat up whatever cleaner, soap or spray, that you are using and cause streaks. That's right, light is one of the main reasons that while cleaning that you can't get your stove top streak free!
Now Let's Clean Before We Shine
Grab your favorite soap or Glass Stove Top Cleaner and use a non scratch sponge to scrub away any grease and grime. Use a razor blade lightly to remove any baked on areas around the burners that the sponge won't get off. Wipe off with a rag, that's wet or dry, any soap left over.

WHEN ODORS BECOME PART OF OUR WELCOME DOOR MAT WE HAVE A PROBLEM.... NOW HERES THE SOLUTION
I hope you didn't think I was going to say that the candle above was the remedy. (lol) I ran into Walgreens for a last minute item and this candle caught my attention. Now if you want your home to smell like Whiskey and Tobacco then light this candle and no need to read any further. But if you want to know the two words that can remove strong odors that are lingering behind your front door then read below for the remedy.
THIS IS BETTER THAN BAKING SODA AT DEODORIZING SMELLY FRIDGES, SHOES, AND ROOMS.
. A scent can be a memorable way of remembering someone. (I’ve got a good joke about that at the bottom of this post, so be sure to scroll for a giggle) The minute I smell mothballs or CHANEL No. 5 I think of my Grandmother. She somehow combined the two scents and made it her signature scent to me. Every home has a signature scent. The more people in the home the more scents tend to linger. Some of those scents turn to odors that we can get rid of with these two words...
ACTIVATED CHARCOAL IS THE REMEDY!
THE BEST WAY TO GET THE STINK OUT OF THE FRIDGE
While providing housekeeping services in downtown Austin Apartments or Housekeeping services in Spanish Oaks, one thing we have found is no matter the size of the fridge or home, some odors will linger. Fridge-It Cube works for up to 6 months in a fridge compared to baking soda boxes that usually last a month. I meal prep weekly (mostly seafood) so the scents tend to linger. I tried the baking soda in a bowl in the fridge, but after a month I forgot about the bowl and didn’t remember until I smelled the fish scent again. The activated charcoal worked so much better than the baking soda because Baking Soda only removes certain scents. My fridge isn't too picky on the certain things it has in it so I need my deodorizer to act accordingly.
We provided maid services to a bachelor in a Houston Medical District High rise condo and upon meeting the client he begged of us to get the smell of the last tenant out of his Houston Condo. Along with our regular cleaning methods we used this Natural Air Deodorizer and Odor remover found at Amazon. Not only did he mention the scent was gone but so did his girlfriend, so we were hired and he soon after got married. Now we weren't invited to the wedding, nor can I say our odor removal techniques caused the wedded bliss, but I can hope that at least they both can agree that our housekeeping services in Houston go above and beyond what the eye can see and the nose can smell. We look for remedies in our cleaning techniques and not cover up methods.
HOW ABOUT A JOKE AFTER ALL OF THAT STINKY TALK
Joke but Fact... Did you know that they have activated charcoal underwear, jeans and pajamas? https://www.myshreddies.com/ Take a look at this link and get a giggle. Sounds like a great christmas stocking stuffer.
One the easy way that you can do yourself (And I am about to show you in this blog) Two the hard way that will probably cost more than a dollar. Now let’s try the easy way first....
OPEN . There is a small compartment at the bottom of the machine. Open it. CATCH Grab a a towel and or bucket because this is about to get messy, icky and dirty. Open the large round knob SLOWLY and catch the water that will come out. CLEAN Now that you have unscrewed the Drain Filter you will see all the icky stuff trapped inside of it. Clean off the filter REPLACE Now you can screw the clean drain filter back in and all parts back to how they were. RUN Run a quick RINSE AND SPIN cycle and let the machine do it’s work.
IF THIS DIDN’T FIX THE ISSUE GO AHEAD AND SAY THAT WORD AGAIN THAT YOUR MOTHER WOULD’NT APPOVE OF. ( I’ll close my ears)
Something may be clogged in the drain hose in the back. REMOVE the drain hose on the back (again have a bucket handy as water may come out. RINSE Take the drain hose outside and run the hose on a strong force through the hose to push anything that may be clogged in out. (A small sock could even cause this damage) REPLACE Now it’s time to put the hose back on ( Making sure everything is TIGHT & RIGHT before you go to the next step. RUN Run the RINSE AND SPIN cycle and let’s see if you’ve become your own HandyMan for the day.
IF THIS WORKED CALL ME AND THANK ME.....THEN POUR YOURSELF A GLASS OF WINE BECAUSE YOU DESERVE IT.
IF THIS HOWEVER DID NOT WORK...DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME CALLING ME AS I WON’T ANSWER....CALL A HANDY MAN

Before you decide to hand over your rug and credit card number to your local steam cleaning company let’s try this money saving, under a Dollar cleaning trick. Since we are in and out providing Downtown Austin maid services to many apartments, condos and lofts we’ve noticed two things about rugs....
1.Nearly every Downtown Austin, Dallas or Houston apartment has more rugs than carpet, usually used to add a pop of color or for a sound barrier.
2.Most of our housekeeping services in Austin, Dallas and Houston are based on pet hair clean up more than human hair clean up and we all know pets love rolling on carpets and rugs.
Pet hair has dander, odors and then we add on cooking and living in a small space, or a rug being used for a pop of color in any size room and eventually we will have an odor problem.
Odors stick to soft surfaces. Couches, Comforters, Carpets and Rugs are the biggest odor keepers.
We’ve found that under a dollar and a minimal effort can not only save you some money, but freshen your space whether your rugs are in a large house or apartment/condo.
Buy Baking Soda 1. Baking soda comes in a small hand held container with holes and you can refill it! 2.Add a teaspoon of your favorite essential oil to the baking soda. Shake the contents and let the mixture marinate at least a few hours before the next step. 3. Sprinkle the baking soda mix generously over the rug and let it sit for at least 4-6 hours. I usually do this overnight when everyone is asleep for the best outcome. 4. Vacuum the baking soda up and empty the contents into the trash right away. Don’t let the contents sit in your vacuum bag or canister as you will end up redepositing the odors on your next vacuum use. 5. Pour a glass of wine or crack open a Beer because you saved the money and it took no time at all.
Now wasn’t that easy? Now after typing the word Sprinkle a few times I reminded myself of the new Sprinkle Cupcake location in The Domain in Austin that opened up. I may need to treat myself to the ATM Cupcake machine. You may need to treat yourself to our housekeeping services so that you too can have more time to visit the Domain, and many other of your favorite local hang outs in your city!
How To Simply & Cheaply Get Rid Of The Odor Out Of Your Rug - YouTube
TOILET PAPER/ WET WIPES seem to be an obvious but let’s be specific on this one. This Game Day Weekend is not the time to buy on the cheap my friends. No one wants to be a guest at anyones home and realize while in the bathroom that the homeowner uses the thinest toilet paper in the world.
AIR FRESHENER/MATCHES that control smell rather than masking them are best at this time. Especially since your bathroom may be getting more use during the game than it most likely has all month! Everyone doesn’t want to smell cinnamon and flowers so keep the fragrance at a minimum on the Air Freshener.
HAND TOWELS really aren’t a good option for many guests to use but if you are using hand towels then make sure to at least have some back up ones handy. Disposable hand napkins or simply leave a roll of paper towels in the bathroom to use and toss are more safe for germ spreading. Let’s admit everyone doesn’t wash their hands correctly.
TOILET BRUSHES seem to be the least likely item on a Super Bowl list but in between guests either you or your guest may want to or have to use one as to not embarrass themselves or the home owner.
FUNNY QUOTES either in a book or hung where one can get a giggle can be a Personal Touch of your own. Hanging a white board in the bathroom with a quote can be hilarious, especially after guests realize there’s a dry erase board for them to anonymously leave a note of Super Bowl crap talking on.
Enough playing on words for us as we sure you get the point. Whether you plan to Host the game watching in your Downtown Austin Apartment community resident hang out area, or at home make sure to stock up wisely, and add a Personal Touch to such a personal space will make your Super Bowl Party memorable.
