“Mama, I want to go to school!” our one-year old son told me one afternoon. Patrick and I looked at each other and giggled, we dismissed it as just another random quip from our little baby-man. After all, he was just 1!!! How could he possibly know what school would be like at this age??? Hahaha! But he was persistent in asking, weeks passed and his request remained firm. It was impossible to deny so I went to a nearby preschool and inquired if I could have him do a trial. They happily obliged and let him sit in as salingkitkit in their playgroup for a few sessions. He absolutely loved being in a school setting— dancing and singing with babies his age, doing arts and crafts, talking to the teachers, even just wearing a backpack and holding his lunch box made him so happy! So as soon the new school year rolled in, we decided to enrol him in the Toddlers Class just a month shy off his 2nd birthday. At 2 years and 8 months, he still absolutely loves his school and it brings me joy to see him happy with his teachers and classmates!
Just this morning, while going through my inbox, a special email from his Teacher Joey popped up. I opened the file attached and out came a multi-paged PDF report of Theo’s progress in school. It came with lots of pictures and a detailed account of each and every developmental facet of my child. Maybe it’s the pregnancy hormones but I got all sorts of emotional reading each page, I had to hold back the tears because I was in an office filled with people! EMO BUNTIS ALERT! Hahaha! It just made me cry happy tears to see how much my son has progressed not only cognitively and physically, but how he has matured in character and spirit too!
Allow me to be a sappy mom and share a little snippet of the report: “Theo is very sensitive and he can recognise most non verbal cues. This was evident when he asked his teacher , “Teacher Joey , why are you sitting on the floor? Are you tired?”. He can express sympathy towards others especially when someone is gloomy. Whenever he sees somebody crying, he immediately walks up to him/her and gives a pat on the back and says “Everything is going to be okay”. He is able to recognise the emotions of others and in turn, express his feelings and emotions appropriately. ”
When I read this snippet, my heart just exploded!!! Thank you Lord for blessing me with a son with so much empathy for others. This has been my prayer since the day we conceived him! Of course as parents, we always have big dreams for our children. We want them to excel in terms of academics, sports, and other activities—but the true achievement for me as a mom would be to see my son grow up to be GOOD and KIND HEARTED PERSON, someone who will always choose to love others. And so this part of the report made me feel a great sense of pride in Theo!
We all have our own styles of parenting, we have unique ways of raising our children. Whatever philosophy you believe in, whatever background you may have, one thing unites us as parents—we all want our kids to have a BRIGHT FUTURE. And this is why I’ve been doing my research for possible options for Theo. And in my research, I actually got interested to check out the GRADMAKER Plan of Manulife Insurance. I actually stumbled across Bianca Gonzalez-Intal’s post about it and asked Manulife to send me more information about it. I’ll admit I’m absolutely clueless about investments so when they sent me these visuals, it really helped me understand everything in a simpler and more direct way. I’m sharing it with you guys now, as I understand there are a lot of you who are also doing research and considering different options for your kids.
