Just a quick update this week as there wasn't really much going on.  It was great to get to finally spend some days back home with my wife and daughter even though it was a rather quick turnaround.  No matter how little time I do get at home it's always worth it.

Getting a pay raise while sitting on the couch?  Sign me up!  Thanks Wal-Mart for yet another dividend increase!
Something I love about dividend growth investing is that each month I get to hear about companies I own deciding to pay me more money in dividends.  Just for owning a small portion of said companies.  Not going and doing R&D for new products or technology.  Not selling any products.  Not managing any employees or inventory.  Not making sales calls.  All I had to do was have the foresight to invest some of my savings in excellent companies.  That's dividend growth investing at work!  I mean who doesn't like getting a raise for doing nothing?  Dividend growth investing is far from a get rich quick investment strategy, rather you need to remain focused on the long term goal to be successful.

Well that was a short lived correction.  After the market volatility that saw the S&P 500 down over 10% in just a few short days the week prior, investors bid shares higher and ended with 6 straight up days.  The S&P 500 is still about 4.7% off it's pre-correction high, but it appears like the crash is cancelled as of now.

January 2018 Net Worth Update
While cash flow is more important when it comes to financial independence, it's still good to look at the balance sheet too, which is why I provide these net worth updates.  Since more and more of my net worth is tied to the markets, there's a larger correlation between my net worth and the markets but in the long run as I continue to save and invest the net worth trend should be higher even though short term fluctuations can vary wildly.  As a dividend growth investor I'm not overly concerned with the short-term gyrations as long as the dividend stream remains in tact, but the markets' effect is noticeable.

January started off with a bang for the markets with the S&P 500 gaining 5.6% for the month.  Although that's down from the high point when it was up 7.5% earlier in the month.  Of course the dip at the end of January was apparently just the beginning of a crazy start to February.

During January my net worth increased $19,325.38.

Talk about a sharp change in the direction of the markets.  This past week was truly a wild ride with the DJIA having 2 1,000+ point declines with the worst coming on Monday where the DJIA was down over 1,500 points at the lows.  The financial media and various talking heads were quick to jump on the declines to get that precious screen time all with their own opinions on why the markets suddenly changed directions.  The answer is that there were a lot more sellers in the market than buyers: simple as that.  As for the reason no one will ever know.

Dividend Update - January 2018
It's the end of one month and the beginning of another so it's time for my favorite update: my dividend update.  These dividend updates reflect all dividends that I receive through my investing pursuits. I hope they can help inspire you to take control of your own finances and invest to build a passive income stream. What you use that stream for is up to you, whether it's to fund early retirement, just provide some FI/FU money, or even to provide for an annual vacation; the key is that it can provide options and open up all sorts of possibilities. You can check my dividend income or progress pages to see what dedication to an investment plan can give you.
