This article is an invitation to understand faith transition and visually see what it might look like on the other side. For me, the context in which we approach hard subjects matters. The first half of this article speaks to that context. If you prefer, you can scroll down to #BreakingJesus, but I invite you to read the entire article.
You may have wandered into this article expecting an anti-religious rant of some kind. You may be triggered by the picture that introduced this article. Your defenses may be up. You may be bracing for a debate over particular points of doctrine or an attack on your faith.
Or you may be someone for whom the deconstruction of your religious beliefs has left you broken and shattered. When you reach out to others in your faith community with raw feelings and high emotions you just can’t connect. Or more significantly, you reach out to your spouse or parents or siblings and feel a devastating silence.
The interpersonal nature of religious belief runs deep. We form families and community based on a shared foundation and structural expectations. One of those expectations is that the foundation is unshakeable, and the rules of life won’t change. But when this happens it is devastating because often our loved ones cannot see or understand us. You are cast adrift and alone.
I was recently listening to “Running Up That Hill” originally by Kate Bush (1985) and recently covered by Meg Myers. I have always loved this song, but I found that for the first time I was being drawn significantly to the deep emotion of the lyrics. The song is about two people who genuinely love each other but fundamentally do not understand each other.
You can feel the tension between them. The misunderstanding and conflict between them is hurting them both. They continue to speak past each other. You get the sense of how earnest they are and how they just want to be understood. Then she makes the invitation:
And if I only could,
I’d make a deal with God,
And I’d get him to swap our places,
Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill,
Be running up that building.
If I only could, oh…
What if we could take our loved ones into our heart and mind? What if they could walk with us through the heartbreaking experience of our faith transition? Not to deconstruct their faith, but to simply be understood; an invitation for them to feel what we feel.
You don’t want to hurt me,
But see how deep the bullet lies.
Unaware I’m tearing you asunder.
Ooh, there is thunder in our hearts.
Our loved ones who are still in the faith do not want to hurt us. It is often inconceivable that their faith could be causing us such deep wounds. Finding space to come together and honor our wounds and complex feelings is challenging. Hence, the deal with God to swap places for just a moment; if only to feel the other’s intentions and understand that these wounds are real.
Is there so much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don’t we?
You, it’s you and me.
It’s you and me, we won’t be unhappy.
I write this article as an invitation made with love. I invite you to feel some of the wounds and trials of a faith transition; and the beauty of what is on the other side. I don’t believe that our family and community hate us. But these divisions and the misunderstanding that surround this experience can cause significant unhappiness, for both sides. It can cause trauma between spouses that results in divorce. It can cause trauma that divides siblings. It can cause a parent to cut off their children.
So, let’s make a deal with God.
I will tell you in the most intimate and vulnerable way how my faith deconstruction happened. My intent is not to hurt your faith, although I am fully aware that this invitation to touch my personal cross might be painful. That is the crux of this conversation. You can’t understand me (or your loved ones) without sharing some of the pain of that experience. It isn’t pain aimed at wounding you or to make you unhappy. My hope is that perhaps vicariously, my story will provide you with insight into your own loved one’s experience or help you to have the conversation with them.
Ultimately, this is an invitation to step closer to your loved one who has gone through a faith transition. This is an opportunity to swap places and “run up that road, up that hill and up that building.” Be willing to step into a deeper space of vulnerability. The miracle on the other side is you will be able to gain some of the most significant relationships of your life. I never knew I could have such a deep connection with friends, who have become family to me. The catalyst every time has been the vulnerability to feel what the other feels, to mourn with those that mourn, to comfort those in need of comfort, and unconditionally stand with them.
C’mon, baby, c’mon darling,
Let me steal this moment from you now.
C’mon, angel, c’mon, c’mon darling,
Let’s exchange the experience, oh….
If I only could
Be running up that hill
With no problems….
I didn’t intend to break Jesus.
Several months ago, it occurred to me that my faith transition felt very much like a Christus statue breaking. Many use the image of a shelf breaking. Heavy problems and questions continue to stack up on the shelf until the shelf buckles under the weight. While this analogy is useful, it fails to capture the significance and violence of your religious foundation shattering. Or that the repercussions of breaking will ripple throughout all your relationships. It also doesn’t capture the sense of betrayal and loss of foundational beliefs.
It may seem very disrespectful or violent to break a statue of Jesus; especially an image that is viewed by most Mormons as sacred. For me, the Christus statue represents Mormonism. As a child, I frequently saw the Christus statue at the visitor’s centers in Washington DC and Salt Lake City. It was eight feet tall and larger than life. It embodied a sense of peace and contentment. It hinted that within the walls of the temple, Jesus walked.
For me, breaking the Christus symbolically captures the disrespect and violence felt in a faith transition. It is a violation of trust and childlike innocence. Whether you agree with the reasons for a person’s faith transition, you can’t invalidate the experience. If you seek to invalidate the experience, you risk losing the relationship.
The breaking apart of the Christus is only half the equation. In the vacuum of belief, other ideas will flood into the space if you let them. Some will be so wounded that they won’t allow anything to be rebuilt. Others will find an expansion of spirituality into multiple faiths and ideas. “Love One Another” is a universal belief. The Golden Rule of “Do unto others as they have done unto you” is found in many faiths.
As my faith transition progressed and I personally grieved the loss of both Mormonism and many relationships, I began to experience significant expansion. I started to find that many of the symbols and beliefs from Mormonism were common throughout Christianity and most world religions. I began to study meditation and looking inward to find God instead of an outward search for meaning and religion.
The most significant gain, however, was reaching out and experiencing the pain and struggle borne by others. In that sharing and mourning together, I found my greatest inward expansion. My ability to hold the pain of others expanded. My ability to express compassion and have unconditional love for others grew. I began to feel an intimate depth of relationship with more people than I ever had before. Jesus actually embodies this ideal by touching other’s crosses, sharing their burdens and walking with us in our times of sorrow. This is a beautiful theology.
How could I keep these good beliefs as they evolved and grew? It was then that I came across the Japanese art of Kintsugi (or Kintsukori). Very simply, this idea or art form is to ‘repair with gold.’ It teaches that if something is broken, it isn’t something to hide; but something to display with pride. By using gold to repair the item, you highlight the break in a way that makes it beautiful. The breaks make it unique. Each break has its own story. Each break is honored.
As I continued to think about this imagery, I began to make it real. What were the breaks to my faith? The first one was obvious:
Jordan – In January of 2012, Jordan (my oldest son) came out to us. His coming out was not the break, though. It was merely a single strike against the statue. Subsequent hits included how we were treated by our family and faith community. It was the absence of love in the theology. Another hit exposed the limits on families in Mormonism to a 1940s patriarchal model and held it up as God’s eternal standard. Ultimately, there is no place for LGBTQ people in Mormon heaven or eternity and thus no place for my family or my son. This break was a result of pounding blows that beat against the statue over weeks and months. And then it broke.
Other breaks I identified were:
Susannah – My oldest daughter is a strong and fierce woman for whom the patriarchal model and limits on women never fit. She constantly challenged church leaders who tried to put her in a box and tell her who she needed to be.
Stockton – Stockton was close to my oldest children. He was Jordan’s first kiss. He took his life in 2016. Whatever weight we place on truth and religion, they cannot exceed what we have lost. Stockton’s break represents all the lives lost to the pride of religion claiming they know the worth of a gay soul.
Jim – Jim’s break represents a whole generation of gay souls who have suffered at the hands of religion. I know dozens of “Jims” who believed their bishops and leaders when they were told that a mixed-orientation marriage would fix them or cure them from being “gay.” But more significantly, Jim taught me that the depth of pain we share can create bonds more valuable, intimate and strong. He taught me how you can truly become someone’s brother.
Steve and Susie – When I was a member still on the fence, my good friends left the church. To my surprise, their quality of life and happiness increased in a dozen different ways. It was antithetical to everything I had been taught about how miserable people are who leave the church. It was a lesson I had to see first-hand.
Wendy (my wife) – Wendy and I broke together outside an LDS chapel the Sunday after the Exclusion Policy was leaked. Our foundation was shattered with the clarity that this church is causing harm and doing it in the name of God. The prophet invoked revelation for a policy that divides, marginalizes, demeans, and irrevocably hurts the most innocent among us. Within three months, Wendy was made aware of 32 suicides in the wake of the policy. She attended as many funerals as she could; and this Mama Dragon mourned with the mothers and fathers of the lost.
So, I invited all of the above people (Stockton was represented by his parents Alyson and George) to come to a ceremony at my house to break a 20”, 16.5 lbs. Christus statue. Starting with Jordan, each of them hammered away until they made a break. Sometimes it took a dozen hits. Sometimes it took a hundred hits. Frequently, the statue would break or fracture somewhere other than where the hammer was falling. The foundation especially took a lot of work to break. But when the foundation finally cracked, the statue had been fully broken. Everyone was emotional. Each strike with the hammer channeled the pain and anger of faith breaking.
It was a beautiful and meaningful ceremony. When all the pieces were broken and on the ground, my feelings were complex. It was a visual representation of my faith deconstruction. Yet it also felt incomplete. I had a yearning that its reconstruction would be as beautiful and rewarding as my faith transition has been.
Over the next few weeks, I took my time putting the Christus back together piece by piece. It was cathartic to mix the gold dust into the epoxy glue and see each break made whole with beautiful clarity. As symbolically as the Christus had been dismantled, each piece was reset to both honor the break and honor how my spirituality has grown and expanded.
This rebuilt Christus is unique. There is only one Christus with these breaks. It was rebuilt with as much passion and emotion as it was dismantled. I can look at each break and know who and what it represents. I can feel the passion, feeling, and heartbreak that each caused; and also the beauty and healing honored in gold.
The statue is now me. Flawed and broken, yet beautiful in unique ways. It honors my scars and faith transition while pointing to a greater depth and spirituality. It has taught me that I can fall apart and put myself back together again. It has taught me to honor my scars. It has taught me to honor the scars I see in others as beautiful and unique.
Now I know that I don’t have to fear being broken anymore.
Tonight, I went to a seminar called “Being a Good Latter-day Saint & Supporting God’s LGBTQ Children” a Listen, Learn, & Love production by Richard Ostler. The seminar was a high school auditorium in Mesa Arizona full of Mormons who had gathered unofficially to hear Richard Ostler and Tom Christofferson speak on how to love and be kind to LGBTQ members and family.
Let’s take a moment to just slow down and analyze that first paragraph. Some concerned Mormons are flying around the country in an unofficial capacity to teach others how to love and be kind to a marginalized minority within their own church. If that sounds rather simple – it kind of was. Tom Christofferson spoke beautifully and eloquently about Christ repeatedly showing love and kindness to the weak and the marginalized. Then Tom spoke to his own experience as a gay man returning to the LDS Church. His bishop received him with open arms.
Next, Richard Ostler spoke regarding his experience as a Young Single Adult Ward Bishop in Utah. He came across several LGBTQ young adults. He described his own journey of learning to listen and love the LGBTQ members in his ward. What he heard while listening was the essence of why he now travels the country speaking unofficially to LDS groups.
What he heard as a bishop was trauma. Isolation. Rejection. Valiant LGBTQ young men and women giving everything to the LDS Church by way of obedience and faith. Yet they are being presented with a choice to either be celibate their whole life or fundamentally deny and fight their sexual orientation. The only road available is to pursue a marriage against their sexual orientation. The reality is that either choice is a concession; that you are fundamentally broken and that hopefully in the next life you will be straight enough for heaven.
Richard poignantly shared how he learned about the trauma that an LGBTQ young adult experiences while navigating this theological no-win scenario. It is so severe that it threatens their lives. He then explained how he came face to face with LDS parents of LGBTQ children who had taken their own lives. When he listened to LDS LGBTQ youth, he heard how despite their faith and obedience. This situation brought them such despair and trauma, brokenness and hopelessness. That ending their lives was a preferable option. And why not? Because the theology teaches that you will be fixed in the next life.
At one point in the presentation, an active LDS gay man tried to explain to the audience why he felt like he wouldn’t be changed (from gay to straight) in the next life. He felt like his sexual orientation, his thoughts and feelings, were an intrinsic part of who he was. In that awkward moment, it seemed like he was literally trying to justify to the straight Mormon audience why he felt like the gayness of his soul wouldn’t need to be lobotomized to go to heaven. There was no version of himself he could imagine in the next life that wasn’t gay. His sexual orientation was interwoven with all of his other innate characteristics and gifts that made him who he was. He had to make a case for himself just to exist in the next life.
My experience of this seminar was defined more by what wasn’t said then what was said. There is a dark reason why this seminar exists; but that reason can’t be spoken, at least not within earshot of this audience. There is no escaping that most Mormons have never spent the time or emotional investment to understand what being an LGBTQ Mormon means.
Mormons are taught from infancy that there is a very defined plan of happiness and a patriarchal order that extends from Heavenly Father to Adam to Joseph Smith (the founder of Mormonism) and then often down to their own fathers. That patriarchal order and priesthood extends from before the world was made to this life. This theology also defines the next life. Eternal marriage is the continuance of the patriarchal order and is explicitly between a man and a woman (or multiple women). In Mormonism, an eternal marriage is specifically required to return and live with God again.
For a Mormon child, this is the truth they live in. Their earthly family (if they keep the commandments and ordinances of the church) is eternally destined to return to heaven. Eternal marriages are only performed in LDS Temples. Being worth to enter and be married in the temple is the pinnacle of mortal life. Creating an eternal family by getting married in the temple is a divine act. It is viewed and taught (from before a child can speak) to be the definitive purpose of life: creating new eternal families.
For an LGBTQ Mormon child, this is still the truth they live in. Except that their awareness of being LGBTQ doesn’t generally happen until puberty (12-13). So, the foundation and expectations of family and religious life are already cemented before this other crucial piece of information (being LGBTQ) is realized. And thus, the trap is realized. There is no place for an LGBTQ person in heaven. There is no space for an LGBTQ person to exist in Mormon theology.
This is what can’t be said. You can’t say to an audience of Mormons that your theology is broken. You can’t tell them that their leaders are doubling down on a theology that in very real ways harms LGBTQ people. You can’t tell them that the same belief system which is so elevating and personal and divine to them can cause another to experience such despair and hopelessness that they experience suicidal ideation. It is a message that can’t be heard.
I watched my gay son (who attended the seminar with us) with tears rolling down his cheeks as he fought to maintain his composure. The picture of a young gay man who had taken his own life was on the screen. Richard was explaining how he had learned of his passing from his parents a few years ago. To the audience, this was probably their first exposure to how this tragedy plays out. To my son, this boy was his first kiss. To my wife and I, his parents are some of our closest friends.
Richard showed another picture of a beautiful lesbian woman. She had taken her life only a few months before. Richard read a quote from her about love and inclusion. They would never know that when she spoke it was like poetry. That her wife is walking joy and creativity personified. She was our friend.
The gap between being immersed in Mormonism and having no knowledge of those for whom Mormonism does not work is a vast chasm. Knowing, loving and hearing those whom Mormonism fails is a huge leap of faith. To hear that message immediately raises their defenses. To give credence that the gospel and truths that they love could cause harm to others, or own family members, is devastating.
It can’t be said.
So, in the seminar, they talked about Jesus. In very elementary ways, they taught that Jesus loves everyone. Jesus says to be kind to LGBTQ people. Without pointing to the “why,” they talked about how LGBTQ members struggle. Especially the youth. They say there aren’t answers. They asked them to put aside for just a moment the certainty that this issue is clearly black and white. They begged the audience to open enough space for an LGBTQ person to be able to choose their own destiny, without the draconian consequences of rejection and condemnation that often follow.
For me and my family, it is an ocean of pain. The people we loved and had lost were reduced to pictures on a screen in a forum where those who see the problem clearly, try to define the problem to an audience while not being allowed to actually say the words: your theology is causing this. If they define it too clearly, they will not be heard. So, they are left with, “Jesus said to be kind,” while leaders at the top double down on a broken theology that tells them they have no place in eternal families.
There is no escaping the brokenness implicit in the theology. There is no escaping that the price of staying in the church is exponentially higher for LGBTQ members than their straight counterparts. There is no escaping that the consequence of not choosing a church-approved lifestyle (celibacy or a mixed orientation marriage) could cost you your family, community and religion; all of which you love desperately.
To those who can carry this message, please don’t give up. I can’t nuance this message anymore because the price has become too high. The tears still stream down the face of my wife and my son just by showing up. I have great respect for those who continue to try to share this message, even as watered down as it needs to be.
To the LGBTQ Mormons that I love, please don’t give up. Your lives are brilliant beacons of light and diversity. You are teaching the rest of us how to love completely. You need not apologize for who you are; but need to show the rest of us what heaven could actually look like here on earth right now. Life is so much better with you in it.
What needs to be said is that we have failed you. There is an eternal destiny for God’s LGBTQ children that is diverse and wonderful. You are irreplaceable pieces of our family fabric. Your love is interwoven into each one of us. One day, those in similar auditoriums will weep at what they couldn’t hear; and the harm they caused to some of the most brilliant, beautiful spirits.
To my LGBTQ friends, I want to say is “Don’t give up, because you are loved.” This song by Josh Groban is at the heart of what I need you to hear. I think it sets the table for the right conversation. Please listen.
LDS Living recently had an article with excerpts from Tom Christofferson’s book “That We May Be One, A Gay Mormon’s Perspective on Faith and Family.”1 Within LGBTQ+ Mormon circles, Tom’s book is controversial in that he tells his story of leaving the LDS Church to live as a gay man and subsequently returning decades later to be welcomed back in full fellowship including baptism and temple blessings.
The narratives that are constructed around Tom’s story are where the points of controversy lie. From the LDS perspective, this is a story of a falling away and then redemption. It tells family members to not lose hope. It confirms that celibacy is the Lord’s way and can be done. It is a narrative that wickedness never was happiness. This is what many LDS members take away from Tom’s story.
The controversy on the other side looks like Tom is selling out. He ended his same-sex relationship of 18 years to return to the LDS Church. He returned to a church that accepts him on very limited terms (celibacy). He is embracing a church that politically attacks LGBTQ+ rights at every opportunity (marriage equality, trans rights). He is returning to a church that brands same-sex marriages as apostasy and forbids their children all ordinances including baptism.
What is lost in attacking or embracing Tom’s choices, is that his story is not just about his choices. It is also about the choices of his family. Tom relates, “I wish my mother were still here to deliver this message. Unbeknownst to me at the time, apparently when some of my nephews were young teenagers at a family reunion and had just learned that I would shortly be arriving with my partner, they were sharing some laughter about gays coming to the reunion when my mother came around the corner. She was a little less than average height, on the thin side, and a rather mild person. My brother Wade was witness, though, to her righteous and powerful indignation on that occasion, which left a few boys quaking in her wake: “You will never speak like that again about my son!”
I have heard Tom speak on several occasions about his parents, especially his mother. Tom relayed a story of when he was with his partner. His brother’s families were having real conflicts regarding having a same-sex couple attend family events. His mother sat the entire family down and said, “We are not a perfect family, but we can love perfectly.” From that time forward, Tom and his partner were welcome at all family events.
I remember seeing a picture of Tom’s family up on the wall. It is one of those studio types with the parents at the center and each of the children and their spouses surrounding them. There was Tom and his partner standing with an equal place in the family landscape.
As a parent of a gay son raised in Mormonism, I find that the choices of Tom’s parents are very significant. Research has demonstrated conclusively that high levels of family rejection are directly linked to exponentially high rates of suicidality, depression, drug-use, and homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth2. Our LGBTQ+ Mormon youth are at risk being raised in Mormon households today.
When straight people (especially those within a religion with gender roles that are strictly defined and eternal in scope) look at this situation, they truly do not comprehend that our youth are confronted with a theology in which they do not exist. Their whole future both in life and eternity is based on whether they can endure going against their inborn sexual orientation (or gender identity) for the rest of their life. They must choose as children to forgo marriage (celibacy). And in Mormonism, a temple marriage is taught as the pinnacle of their religion and the key to eternal life and happiness.
The burden of a child’s health and happiness is placed on their ability to make these choices. They are forced to make these choices when they are barely even discovering who they are and what that means. In the Mormon context, these choices impact their whole lives as well as their eternal welfare. With such high stakes, it is no wonder they are faced with an identity crisis, being misunderstood by virtually everyone, and risk of losing everything; most importantly their families.
Tom Christofferson’s parents modeled a Safe Way for their son. What a child needs when facing these choices is unconditional love and acceptance. They need space and time to discover who they are. The instinct of LDS parents is to micro-manage and fix their child. Many times, this involves demands and expectations that they conform or face consequences. Everything regarding their relationship with their child is based on controlling the choices of their child.
As the parent of an LGBTQ+ child, I see three significant keys to creating a Safe Way for our children. First, your unconditional love for your child needs to be expressed directly and emphatically. It isn’t good enough to hope your love is assumed. Express your love without reservation and without strings attached. “Love the sinner but hate the sin” is just not good enough. That means that when there are conflicts and questions between choosing your child and anything else, your child takes precedent. Those other things could be parents, siblings, extended family, church members, church leaders, or even current religious policies or doctrine. The foundation of a Safe Way for your child needs to be your unquestionable love.
Second, you need to free your child from your own expectations. Especially in Mormonism, the first 20 years of life are designed to follow a script. For boys, there is deacon, teacher, priest, various scouting achievements, and a mission. For girls there are divine virtues that prepare you to be a wife and a mother. All of these build up to a temple marriage complete with very traditional gender roles. Then, all the sudden, there is a large empty hole as all those expectations disappear. As a parent, you will feel the great loss of what “could have been”. It was the plan that was known and comfortable. In its place is a wide-open future that is unknown and uncomfortable.
The weight of your expectations needs to be lifted off your child through a very specific conversation. Trust me, they already know what your expectations are. They need to know that the future they discover and create for themselves will be one you are excited to be a part of and celebrate with them. Your fear needs to take a back seat to the wonder of who your child will become. Your discomfort needs to be replaced by curiosity and a hunger to learn right beside your child. By doing so, instead of pushing your child away, you will be part of their journey. You will be on the Safe Way with your child.
Third, you need to demonstrably fight for and choose your child. Tom Christofferson’s mother on multiple occasions fought for Tom’s place in the family. They were at moments when he wasn’t even there. They weren’t conditional on a return to Mormonism, even if that was ultimately what she hoped. She chose him over and over and over again, even when he brought a same-sex partner home to the family. As a parent, you can make the Safe Way for your child by talking the talk and walking the walk.
Sometimes you will have to battle to make the Safe Way safe. You may have to place boundaries around the Safe Way that protect your child from those that would disrespect or seek to harm them. Sometimes you can lead by example. Other times you will have to take the barbs that are aimed at your child. That is part of the price of making a Safe Way for your LGBTQ+ child.
You are the single most significant factor in creating a Safe Way for your LGBTQ+ child. Your choices can create, protect and celebrate a whole new future for your rainbow child. None of this is conditional on the choices your LGBTQ+ child makes. They may make good choices. They may make poor choices. They may make decisions that are 180 degrees from where you thought they should be. But they will be safe. And you will be able to experience a whole new future that is greater than anything you could have imagined.
There is truly nothing more exceptional than having an LGBTQ+ child. You will see the world through different eyes and a new heart. You will learn to be a better parent. Nothing will bring you closer to a truly Christlike, unconditional love. Your LGBTQ+ child will be safe; and ultimately, love will become your religion, in ways it never was before.
