When the team quizzed me for my absolute favourite ingredients, I had to be strict, because nature really does offer some great ingredients. I have picked these ones for their super-powers. Here’s why…

Magnesium
I’m all over magnesium – it’s a bit of a wonder mineral which is vital to your health and wellbeing (and actually a mineral most of us are thought to be deficient in). It’s also absolutely brilliant for helping to calm and catch better zzz’s too.

Safflower Oil
Super moisturising and hydrating, yet it’s not heavy or greasy. Leaves skin with a soft silky feel and healthy glow. It’s rich in beneficial linoleic acid which can help make the skin’s barrier stronger. All round winner!

Sweet Almond Oil
What I call… ‘skin care super power’. Rich in vitamins and minerals including vitamin E, vitamin A, fatty acids, protein, potassium, and zinc. It’s a powerful antioxidant thanks to the vitamin E content and the vitamin A that can help reduce acne (as the oil is easily absorbed by the skin), it cleans out dirt and oil which accumulates in pores.

Baobab Oil
Rich and powerful stuff for three reasons.
1 – Rich in antioxidants which protects skin from free radical damage.
2 – Has a super high vitamin C content (6 times more than an orange) which helps with skin elasticity.
3 – It also contains vitamin A, D, E & F and all three omega fatty acids, omega 3, 6 and 9 making it excellent for softening, healing and regenerating properties.

Lavender Essential Oil
Finally, I can’t really leave this one out as it’s the first oil we began with and we still blend up with hundreds of other essential oils today. It’s the one essential oil for everything… blended with the right other essential oils it helps calm, reduce stress and anxiety, eliminates nervous tension, relieves pain, it’s antiseptic, antibacterial, it disinfects, prevents acne, enhances blood circulation, promotes wound healing, induces sleep, treats respiratory problems and on and on and on. That saying about the gut being your second brain – it’s actually been proven to be true and anxiety and stress can cause your stomach to bloat just as much as a dodgy dinner. The good news is that you don’t have to have a lifestyle overhaul to make your gut happier – try these 3 simple switches that aren’t complicated, expensive or boring but are bloody good for your gut.

Take a probiotic
The one we have all heard of. Live bacteria that helps to balance the microflora in your gut so your body can break down food, produce vitamins and fight germs. Probiotics are found in fermented food like yoghurt, kimchi and sauerkraut but you can also take supplements. Hands down the best one we’ve tried is Symprove, which has the backing of King’s College Hospital in London, who have been researching the gut for decades. They discovered that when taking a shot of this every morning, 57% of patients with moderate to severe IBS had fewer symptoms. It doesn’t sound vast, but for those who suffer every day, this is huge. We haven’t found anyone who’s tried it and hasn’t been impressed. Recommended for 12 weeks, a four week supply costs £79 and is available from symprove.com

Breath deep
Belly breathing has been part of the yogi world forever, but people are now using it to control and temper their tummies. By breathing deep (past your lungs and chest and into your stomach) it relaxes your organs. This reduction in tension means that everything from toxins to gas can then begin moving through your intestines easier, which equals less pain and discomfort. Especially good if your IBS is linked to stress. Just five minutes of breathing in for 10 seconds (make sure your stomach expands fully), holding your breath for 10 and then breathing out for 10 and you’ll not only find it refocuses your brain, but it really will help to reset your stomach too. And you can do it anywhere, at any time – although sitting down is probably best, and also somewhere where you don’t mind billowing out your belly!

Eat smarter
So the science bit… Your body needs bacteria to function and because most of your body’s bacteria is found in the gut, if you’re not feeding it properly it will become off-balance and that’s when problems occur. The usual culprits like junk food don’t help but things like onions, garlic, apples and pulses can be a trigger too. We recently tried The Happy Pear’s Happy Gut course that cuts them out and then reintroduces them in a manageable manner. A six week online programme that’s full of tummy friendly recipes and quick two minute tutorials on how you can help your insides. It’s an education in and out of the kitchen. Helping you find your foodie triggers, they even have three cooking schedules to make things easy – once a week, three times a week or every day and there’s a Facebook group where you can share tips and experiences. While six weeks sounds like a long time, the recipes are delicious (hello Vietnamese Coconut Curry and Banana Bread) and because you don’t have to think about what you’re buying at the weekly food shop or cooking every night, it’s actually a lot less stressful and means more time to chill out in the evening. Plus, the two Irish twins who founded The Happy Pear (Dave and Steve) are pretty easy on the eye too! Watch them on YouTube or check out the course on thehappypear.ie. Did we mention they’re vegan too? It costs €149, but the wealth of information is worth it and it’s all been formulated with the help of a registered dietician and gastroenterologist, so it’s science-backed as well.

The one that stole the show and continues to get you all ooh-ing and ahh-ing AND saying things like.. “I’m just obsessed”.
Did you know it’s a bespoke design by our founder Nicola? Hand drawn with gravure ceramic texture and hand craft finish. It took over a year for our team to develop, as Nicola was so passionate about making sure every detail was just right. It had to not only be super effective and powerful, and kick out those all important natural essential oil blends, it also had to have ALL THE AMAZING DESIGN details so it would fit into any home and look incredible too – our Product Development girls still dream about getting the perfect shade of rose gold today (check out Andrea from our product in our IGTV in our office tour – it’s about 5 minutes in).

It’s actually really hard to create a bath foam (with naturals) that actually, well, foams and not forgetting being free from SLS too (cue even trickier). SLS (which is added to so many products) gives the bubbles but boy it can be pretty drying and not to mention irritating to the skin too.
Oh and then start adding in a serious complex blend of 19 essential oils to this recipe (because what really is a bath foam with some serious oils to help you truly relax and unwind?) and you come under a whole load of other problems – too runny, to thick, no bubbles. But hey we got there in the end. Result? softening marshmallow and coconut oil. Soothing aloe and sweet almond oil. And utter relaxing with our essential oils blend too.

April 1st and it’s Stress Awareness Month. Meaning our social committee (yep we have a gang who book and make the NEOM team do cool stuff and feel good) got us doing three, easy little moments of wellbeing for us at HQ to make sure we all stress a little LESS (even Ivan in the Ops team, who you met in our office tour on IGTV).

1 – We never forgot when the Huffington Post reported that dark chocolate can reduce stress by lowering cortisol – so first up, what better way to treat the team than a table full of the good stuff on a Monday morning. The email sent to all said… “Happy Monday gang – get stuck in and feel less stressed!”. Nothing easier.

2 – Second on the agenda was feeling good with Turmeric. We got hooked on a mug of the warming spicy Turmeric Latte from Wunder Workshop (anyone see it in our January Wellbeing Edit?). Turmeric is said to have a tonne load of wellbeing benefits like anti inflammatory, anti bacterial and supposedly good for mood and stress too. We’ll take that. With a bit of honey, whipped up with oatly as an afternoon coffee switch with it’s creamy taste and comforting vibes.

3 – Book club. Reading is good for the soul right? Whether like our founder Nicola and like a bit of fiction to help your mind on a night or looking for wellbeing inspo. We all shared our favourite stress-relieving reads and challenged each other to read a little over the course of the month. Picks were ‘The Anxiety Solution’ by Chloe Brotheridge, ‘Mindfulness A Practical Guide to Finding Peace in A Frantic World’ by Mark Williams and ‘Calm the F**k Down’ by Sarah Knight – to keep it real.

When the NEOM team asked me to write something about how I feel energised, I thought if energy equals natural power, when do you feel your most powerful self?

I feel powerful when I get the balance of life right and top up my energy bank (to use a phrase from our fab Psychologist Suzy Reading). Which means… a good night’s sleep, a body full of the right nutrients, in a regular pattern with my exercise (I like to run outdoors when the weather gets better), working enough to stimulate me but not too much I feel frazzled (mmm, sometimes I don’t get that balance quite right!) and my home life happy. It’s a bit of a list, but that’s good. It means I don’t just rely on one thing, but a cocktail of elements to make it up.

Top 3 things I rate which work on top of that are:

1 – Move. The thing is, exercise can really help our body release and create more energy into our cells, and so even though it can feel counter-intuitive, exercise can actually help us feel more energised.

2 – Saying No. My favourite quote I put on Instagram is ‘Listen, I still want to be invited but I am not coming.’ Doing all the things, all of the time zaps our energy.

3 – Calling in the big guns (and probably a wellbeing cliche) BUT it’s a bit of a smoothie. Ok it’s green but it’s easy and not righteous. AND it has heaps of health boosting ingredients and powerful antioxidants to naturally boost your energy – Just place all the ingredients in a blender until smooth. Drink straight away. Job done.
½ avocado
4 leaves kale
½ apple
2 slices of cucumber
1 handful spinach
1 cup of coconut water
4-5 fresh mint leaves

Of course, we all have the times you drank too much at the weekend, didn’t sleep, the kids are fighting in clumps and work dumps something unexpected in your lap… I could go on… but just stop, try and make your way back to the ‘good zone’. Cook something healthy, take a bath, wake up early and go for a walk. It’s all about small steps, that make a big difference.

Sometimes self-care and downtime can seem like a distant dream. One of those things we promised we’d do but that slides down the priority list when schedules (aka real life) get too demanding. It’s why we’ve become partial to the odd app. A bit like the breadcrumb effect, they can be great for pointers and guidance when we’ve lost our way. Whether that’s going to the gym, improving our bedtime habits or boosting our motivation, read on for the three hot apps we rate that are keeping us on the straight and narrow right now:

FIKA
Takes no longer than five minutes, it’s like a HIIT version of Headspace!
There’s nothing worse than doing a cardio class when you’re knackered or weights when you want to be anywhere else but, in a crowded sweaty gym, right? BUT then there’s the guilt thing and the frustration that we haven’t moved our bodies (which we know is good for us). It’s a mental minefield. That’s where Fika steps in. With an aim to improve your ‘emotional fitness’ its mission is to leave you feeling upbeat and ready to take on whichever form of exercise your mind and body needs at that moment in time. Drawing on research from sports psychology to help improve confidence and mindset the idea is that to optimise your performance, you need your brain and your body to be in synch. Log on and choose your desired result (eg achieving your goals) and after answering a series of questions such as ‘what’s zapping your energy this week?’ it will prescribe some timed ‘emotional’ exercises that will help you with your physical exercise habits.

We’re all about easy, no BS apps that understand that we can’t always just close our eyes to meditate or truly get that we only have a limited amount of time and it’s not first thing in the morning or last thing at night. FREEMIND
Hands up who’s guilty of wanting to fast track EVERYTHING? Shopping, work, workouts, the entire week just so we can get to the weekend… well now you can fast-track your meditation too. Using MetaMusic (story-telling tunes with specific frequencies that speed up your journey into deep relaxation), the Freemind app then gets to work focusing on what it believes to be the three pillars of happiness – Peace, Power and Purpose. Promising listeners years’ worth of meditation in a matter of months. While we can’t confirm or deny this (yet); topics such as managing stress, changing habits and being healthier make it relevant to everyday life. Plus, the meditation options come with or without guidance so if you just want a quickfire relaxation session minus a voiceover, the choice is yours.

Define good wellbeing for you?

Nadia – When I do all the things I need to do to look after myself, mentally, emotionally and physically.
Katia – Giving myself time on my own to recognise my feelings rather than everything happening in a rush, and I realise it’s 4pm and I haven’t eaten yet.

Describe a day of good wellbeing?

Nadia – That’s dependent on whether I’m working or have a day off. On either day, I make sure I spend some time meditating, eat well and get some movement in my body.
Katia – Waking up early so I’m not rushing, and can get the kids organised so they are not rushing. Walking for an hour to declutter my mind, eating a healthy lunch ( I’m not a breakfast person), then having a little time before picking up the kids to switch from work mode back to mum mode… and limiting my time on my phone.

What’s the one REAL WELLBEING or ritual you do each day – the failsafe thing that is in your toolkit?

Nadia – Mediate.
Katia – A walk in the woods and time on my own.

Who inspires you the most? And why?

Nadia – Katia does. When we were writing the books and I saw how much she had to juggle to run her home, the kids, and her business, it kind of blew me away. I had no idea how much she has to manage and do in a day.
Katia – Hahaha Nadia (not just saying that because she said me!), she is even my husband’s go-to. He calls her his ‘moral compass’… she always has good advice and helps me see things in a different light.

Tell us about your new book?

Katia – Self Care for the Real World is about why you should take of yourself and Rituals is how you can do that. Rituals for every day gives you recipes to help you pause, pay attention and give intention. It’s not woo-woo, or religious; just lovely rituals we can all do to bring a bit more spark into our everyday lives whilst deepening our relationship with ourselves.

What other books do you recommend to feel good?

Nadia – I read a lot, so there are lots of books that make me feel good, depending on what is going on for me in the moment. I’m on holiday right now and refuse to succumb to a Kindle so I was a little overweight with books!
Katia – Right now I’m reading How to Own a Room, by Viv Groskop and it’s so inspiring. I’m quite shy and just her simple posture techniques make a difference.

Tech rules?

Nadia – We both run our own businesses so we are unfortunately on the phone more than we would like to be, but try and keep it off in the morning and in the evening – and definitely no phones in the bedroom.
Katia – I have to try and be super disciplined – to not be scrolling and zoning out on the phone, because I have to lead by example with the kids.

What’s your wellbeing challenge?

Nadia – I can get stressed and over emotional unnecessarily so I need to check that I eat well and sleep well, especially when going through busy or emotionally challenging times.
Katia – Being snappy with the kids and low energy… I really try to make sure I get space in the day where I’m not working or with the kids. That helps me stay calm, and I always try to get to bed by 10.30pm.

NEOM favourite?

1. Go to mood lifting indulgence and why?
Movement. I love to move! So whether it’s walking, running or stretching, I know that moving my body will always lift my mood instantly.

2. Best feel good book, movie or song?
You’re All I Need To Get By – Marvin Gaye

3. Top mood lifting tip?
Try something new. Doing new things is always fun! You’ll have zero expectations because you’ve never done it before. You might discover a new place / person / recipe / experience. Mix it up and stay open to chance.

Three small steps to FEEL GOOD with @mutha.hood

1. Best indulgence to feel good?
A little treat here and there is good for the soul and shouldn’t be held against ourselves as a failing. I treat myself to fresh fruit – cherries, redcurrants, strawberries that I used to view as far too pricey to allow myself to have. This stops me from feeling deprived in some way, which helps limit them amount of times I feel the need to binge on high sugar items.

2. Best feel good tip?
I make sure I have a bath, if not every day then at least every other day. I play a few of my favourite songs and I allow myself to be calm. I’m a total completer finisher. I hate leaving a to do list for the next day and so I will always busy myself. A bath ensures I stop and nurture myself.

3. Favourite NEOM products to feel good?
I have been very fortunate to enjoy NEOM Body Scrubs and the Candles. The scents of which have really helped my mood. I am also in love with the Reed Diffusers.

Three small steps to FEEL CALM with @mind.body.bowl

1. Top book to feel calm?
My journal! Okay, so it’s not a book as such, but it’s the best tool for getting things out of my head.

2. Top tip to relax before and after work?
I try to stay off my phone in my room, and switch off my laptop in the evening. It’s still a work in progress, but I always notice a massive difference when I do. Also, staying off my phone for the first few hours of the day is a game-changer. I try to keep early mornings to myself before letting the world in.

3. Favourite NEOM product?
