It has been a while since I've published a blog post. Since December, I decided to take quite a long blog and social media break. Many of you are familiar with Shiner, as she's been the face of Pawsitively Pets since the beginning. Shiner would have had her 16th birthday in March, but unfortunately her body could not quite last that long. She passed away on December 21, 2018.

Shiner tried her very best up until the end to be a good doggy. Before her passing, I noticed she began to have some trouble walking around and getting up on my bed like she usually does. She was falling down more than usual. I gave her a check-up and noticed her gums were a little pale. The next day, things were exponentially worse and I knew that this was not something she could recover from. Having seen other elderly dogs with the same sort of condition as her, I knew this was not good for her.

For the cat that loves to hunt, toys offer an abundance of fun, exercise, and interactive stimulation. Recently, Petmate sent us one of their Jackson Galaxy Ground Prey Wands to try out. I knew Roadside would probably like this toy because he's a big hunter. We also have one to give away to our readers so keep reading for the details.

The Jackson Galaxy Ground Prey Wand comes with a detachable cat nip toy attachment. You can purchase other attachments for the wand to try out too. The adjustable telescoping wand reaches 32 inches. When you're done playing, just push it down to save space. The string that connects the toy attachment to the wand is thick and durable.

To play with the wand, simply extend it and drag the attached toy across the floor. The toy mimics the movements of ground-based prey.

Thanksgiving is coming soon and that means food, food, and more food. Many people want to include their pets in the festivities, but because Thanksgiving is centered around mostly food it's not always healthy to include pets in the celebration.

Thankfully, Merrick has a line of Thanksgiving Day Dinner pet food available that is perfect for the occasion. This month, Callie has been eager to give Merrick's Purrfect Bistro Thanksgiving Day Dinner a try. Thanks to Chewy.com for sending some over.

The National Dog Show presented by Purina® will broadcast on NBC this Thanksgiving, November 22nd, at noon in all time zones after Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The National Dog Show will be hosted by award-winning TV personality, author, and Broadway star, John O'Hurley.

Returning to offer expert analysis is American Kennel Club-licensed judge David Frei, who has officiated at dog shows worldwide and, alongside O’Hurley, has co-hosted the competition since its inception in 2002. NBC Sports correspondent Mary Carillo will report from inside the show ring, and former U.S. Olympic figure skaters Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir will offer behind-the-scenes access as digital contributors.

This year, two new American Kennel Club sanctioned breeds will be included in the competition. The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje from the sporting group and the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen from the hound group, bringing the total recognized number of breeds to 192. While the two breeds may be new to The National Dog Show this year, they have been around for much longer.

For October, Chewy.com sent us an OurPets Cat Scratcher to try out. The cats have one scratcher, but it's starting to look a bit worn out and I thought they'd enjoy a fresh one to dig their claws into. There are many different OurPets Cat Scratchers available at Chewy.com. I ultimately decided on the OurPets The Wave Curved Cat Scratcher.

Scratching is great for cats as it helps to support healthy claws by helping cats shed the outer layer of their nails. If your cat is scratching things you don't want them to, like furniture, having a few scratchers around the house can help deter the behavior.

The OurPets Cat Scratcher is made with corrugated cardboard and has plenty of small nooks and crannies to help support your cat's claw health. This scratcher does come with a package of catnip that you can sprinkle on top to encourage your cat to use it. Aside from scratching, the design of the OurPets The Wave Curved Cat Scratcher makes it a great place for cats to lounge and nap.

If you follow any of our channels on social media, you may have heard that my beloved Roadside, aka my "Prince" is sick right now. The situation is extremely difficult, and I will probably write more on this topic at a later time. But for now, I just want to write and share what him and I are going through because it helps to write it out.

I have been a nervous wreck, stricken with dread, anxiety, and sadness. In early to mid-September, Roadside began to show signs of urinary issues. Spending a lot of time in the litter box, peeing outside the litter box, etc. I took him to the vet and he of course had struvite crystals in his urine. In order to prevent a urethral obstruction, he was prescribed medication and a prescription diet to help dissolve the crystals. It's a fairly common illness for male cats, although terrible.

Are you looking for the purr-fect way to indulge your feline's taste buds? You can pamper your kitty with Purina Fancy Feast Appetizers! This month, our friends at Chewy.com sent over some of these delectable treats for Callie to try. Callie has always loved her occasional Fancy Feast treats and we haven't tried these yet, so I thought we'd give them a go.

There are five delicious flavors of Fancy Feast Appetizers for cats, but we decided to try the Oceanfish with a Shrimp Topper flavor. This flavor is made with real, flaked oceanfish and shrimp in a savory fish broth.

As families prepare for Hurricane Florence along the East Coast, people are doing everything they can to get ready for the worst. It's never too early to prepare for natural disasters such as hurricanes and in fact it's actually a smart idea to have a plan in advance.

If you have pets, it's critical to have a plan for them as well in the event of a hurricane or other natural disaster. While we hope that nobody ever becomes separated from their beloved pets during a hurricane, it's certainly possible. Preparation can help families reunite with their pets in situations where they may become separated.
