As ecommerce sales continue to rise, beauty industry manufacturers have to find ways to get their sample products in the hands of consumers. This allows the consumers to try before they invest in that full-size products or upscale brands.

Distributing sample size products is the most powerful way to entice new consumers into your brand and products.

Why Are Beauty Sample Size Products Important?

Sampling is, and always has been, a persuasive tactic to introduce consumers to your brand. It’s important for consumers to test out beauty products for a number of reasons, including texture, fragrances, color, and individual skin sensitivities.

With sales excelling, ecommerce limits the opportunity to interact with the product yet luxury brands are often quite pricey. Therefore, it’s imperative that consumers have opportunities to test products. Popular beauty products widely provided as sample sizes are:

  • Perfumes
  • Lip Colors
  • Foundation
  • Moisturizers
  • Hair Care
  • And more!

Manufacturers should consider sampling when launching a new product, repositioning an existing product to a new consumer base, or enhancing the consumers’ experience with your product. The sample size products can also mimic the look of the full-size option.

4 Sample Size Packaging Options

MJS Packaging is happy to help manufacturers with custom sample size packaging or find the right stock solution. We’ve even stated why we think small packaging makes a huge impact.

Here are some examples of stock solutions:

Sampling beauty products, like fragrances, in smaller packaging saves consumers money and increases the brand’s exposure.
  1. Small Vials: This packaging option is commonly used for fragrance samples, but can be good for any liquid product. Vials are easily stored in purses and bag compartments for women and men on-the-go. With closures like rollers or screw caps, this sample size product can provide the right option for what you need.
  2. Small Bottles: A small bottle, such as a 1/4 oz. HDPE cylinder can be paired with various dispensing closures. For example, the hair industry uses small bottles to provide sample and travel size options for consumers with either high curiosity or on-the-go lifestyles. Due to airport travel restrictions, manufacturers have a great way of allowing consumers to use their products as they travel.
Ampoules are perfect to introduce potential consumers to your product by giving them a single use sample.
  3. Ampoules: This packaging item comes in plastic and glass. Ampoules have been very popular within the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and skin care industries. Offering a one-time use for liquids, lotions, creams, and serums, this packaging option provides the perfect solution for those who are particular about the expiration date of beauty products.
Creams, like lotion or gels, are easily portable and perfect for sampling before the consumer purchases a full-size product.
  4. Mini Jars: The 1/4 oz. PS jar is a packaging gem. It is an upscale way to sample a product that comes in a larger size. This jar gives the consumer the opportunity to try the product more than once. Products, like lotions, gels, and creams, are perfect options for filling and distributing to the interested consumers.

Car care products improve many aspects of your car, including its shine, gloss, and overall durability. Most car care products consist of chemicals so manufacturers have to pay special attention to their product packaging.

The Car Care Industry

The average American drives about 25 miles and spends an average of one hour each day behind the wheel. This amount varies by region and the days of the week but consumes a decent percentage of our waking hours. Americans are also holding onto their cars longer. Since cars are now built better and last longer, the average car on the road is only about 12 years.

Not every American is equipped to handle their own oil changes, but the average consumer can either wax their car or refill the washer fluid on their own. Consumers use car care products for the upkeep of their cars outside of scheduled maintenances.

Packaging Ideas: 4 Common Car Care Products

MJS Packaging wants to shine a light on common packaging ideas for car care products. With tons of options on the market, we are sharing packaging ideas for products essential for all cars.

Consumers oftentimes need to add motor oil to their cars themselves. Manufacturers offer durable packaging options for safe storing.
  1. Motor Oil: With some variations, motor oil is typically packaged in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles. Most packaging offers an offset neck for easy reach and pouring. Quart-size bottles often are handleless and have ridges or ribbing for a better grip, while gallon and liter bottles have wide handles.
The F-Style bottles hold plenty of products to last for a long time.
  2. Coolant & Windshield Washer Fluid: MJS Packaging loves the versatility of the F-style bottle. These HDPE bottles are used for coolant and windshield washer fluid in the car care market. Ranging in sizes from 8 ounces to 2.5 gallons, these bottles are equipped for effortless pouring.
  3. Car Wax: Applying a car wax regularly helps extend the life and beauty of your car’s paint. This product comes in many forms, such as pastes, creams, and sprays. MJS Packaging provides packaging options such as low-profile HDPE jars, HDPE cylinders or ovals with dispensing closures, and HDPE bottles/carafes with trigger sprayers.
Cleaning the inside of your car doesn’t have to be difficult. Manufacturers often utilize easy-to-store packaging for products, such as wipes and creams.
  4. Leather Cleaners & Conditioners: Let's not forget about the inside of the car, too! While we do see this product in spray form, MJS Packaging also sees a lot of creams, lotions, and wipes to clean the inside of the car. We supply tubes and wipe canisters for all interior materials in addition to the packaging options mentioned in car wax.

Recently, MJS Packaging examined the importance of color in packaging. Now, we want to highlight products that come packaged in interesting shapes and sizes. Shapes and size matter – both intriguing the consumer and influencing their purchasing decision.

Packaging Shapes

When it boils down to the consumer’s purchasing decision, one of the primary factors is the package’s shape. Its shape communicates various meanings. For instance, angular shapes lean toward masculinity, while bottles with curves speak to femininity.

According to Industrial Packaging, three factors play a major part in a package’s shape and size. In regard to shape, the International Journal of Scientific Research and Management Studies published a study stating consumers are looking for products that are easy to:

  • Carry
  • Use
  • Store

Package sizes can also be perceived as containing a higher quality product. Consumers sometimes believe small packages are of a higher quality if its label reflects the same message. Larger packages can also communicate high value if consumers believe they’re receiving more bang for their buck.

4 Examples of Packaging Shapes

While size, color, and shape matter, the package’s functionality and form are equally as important. MJS Packaging provides a few examples of many packaging options with interesting shapes.

The Scala (left) bottle curved shape offers an interesting look for spirits, like tequila. While the height and bold lines of the Quartz bottle portray a strong presence for your spirits.
  1. Spirits: Spirits bottles speak volumes and can be the difference between consumers repurposing or tossing it into the recycling bin. These bottles communicate care with their meticulous embossing or imbedded crest designed onto the packaging. There are so many interesting shape options for this popular industry, including figured flasks, cylinder, square, and rectangular styles.
This container offers easy scooping features for powder products for the on-the-go lifestyle.

  2. Nutraceutical: MJS Packaging loves this versatile high-density polyethylene (HDPE) oblong container. The wide neck creates a perfect option to pair with protein powders or drink flavorings. It’s also lightweight, so the container is great for on-the-go consumers.
This jar is the perfect storage option for personal needs, such as candies and cotton balls.

  3. Small PET squared jar: Featured in a case study, custom PET squared jars have great uses for personal care, automotive, household chemicals, and food products. This jar has an aesthetically pleasing shape and solves customer’s problems that need a more stackable package. It increases productivity with its consistent jar quality, optimizes the labeling process, maximizes retail presence and generates consumer awareness.
Separating powerful chemicals in the same bottle packaging is ideal for manufacturers and their consumers.

  4. Dual-chamber: A dual-chamber, better known as dual dispensing, bottle provides manufacturers the opportunity to enclose two products within the same package. It’s a great product differentiator that allows consumers to customize their product experience. It’s also widely used within the household chemical and automotive industries.

After successfully launching their first batch of premium whiskey, Old Baldy co-founders Ed Bley and Jeff Mattingly were excited to release the second batch. Unexpectedly, they ran into a delay with the shipment of their glass bottles.

The Situation

In order to keep the launch date on track, it was necessary for Ed and Jeff to quickly find a vendor with technical expertise and the ability to react immediately. Due to the high proof of this whiskey, bottles need adequate headspace to prevent the bar top closures from popping off. As a result, Ed reached out to Riekes Container for an immediate solution.

Solution: Finding a Supplier and Technical Expertise

Due to our experience and relationships in different facets of the spirits industry, Riekes Container, an MJS Packaging Company, was able to tap into our vast network of suppliers and glass experts. Our network provided prompt ideas to meet the aesthetic and functional demands. Within two days, new glass bottles were sourced, ordered, delivered, tested, and flawlessly worked with plenty of headspace.

“I’m more than impressed with the team at Riekes and won’t hesitate to use them again! They saved me and did it professionally!” said Ed Bley.

About Old Baldy 2 Whiskey
Old Baldy 2 Whiskey is an 11-year, 8-year and 4-year whiskey with vanilla bean, stone fruit, and other prominent flavors.

Old Baldy 2 Whiskey is a blended whiskey released in very limited quantities. Since 2016, their Old Baldy collection has been an instant hit among whiskey connoisseurs.

Old Baldy came into existence when Ed began tasting and trading as much bourbon as possible. He even began helping out confused customers in stores’ bourbon sections. A few years later, the success of Old Baldy has given Ed the confidence and credibility to launch his own distillery, Rising Tide Spirits.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with Ed Bley at Rising Tide Spirits and Jeff Mattingly at Bourbon 30.

Need a Rapid Solution?

Riekes Container works to provide quick solutions for our customers. It was not only a matter of finding the bottles swiftly but also providing a great deal of knowledge and expertise to exceed our customer’s needs.

While we’ve discussed packaging trends in many industries, MJS Packaging has yet to cover trends within the candy and snack industry! Candy and snack packaging has to stand out amongst competitors and communicate its sweet value to consumers.

The candy and snack industry offers various packaging trends and options for manufacturers.
The Candy & Snack Industry

This luscious industry, standing approximately at $35 billion in U.S. annual sales, offers endless options from sweet and sour candies to health-conscious and guilty pleasure snacks. Packaging provides great opportunities for manufacturers and its consumers:

  • Approximately 80% of brand owners claim packaging has a positive effect on brand value.
  • Shoppers are willing to pay more for certain characteristics when a product’s packaging enhances these traits.
4 Packaging Trends

MJS Packaging wants to share several trends, which emerged from the 2018 National Confectioners Association’s Sweets & Snacks Expo.

A consumer makes an at-shelf purchasing decision on which brand to choose.
  1. Single-Serve Packaging: Americans love to snack. They snack an average of 2.5 times per day, or more if they are younger, and typically alone. This is why the candy and snack industry offers single-serve options because they are portable, easy to carry, open and reseal.
On-the-go snacking provides peace of mind and no spills with its resealable packaging.
  2. Convenience Packaging: Consumers of all ages enjoy when these products are offered in packaging that is lightweight, easy to open, and resealable, complementing their on-the-go lifestyle. Many manufacturers in this industry use plastic stand-up pouches as the perfect packaging options for both candy and snacks.
  3. Bulk Packaging: Purchasing candy and snacks in bulk is essential to big families and households. Consumers like the economics of large, resealable packages because it saves money and time. It allows fewer trips to the store while keeping the products consumers love fresh. Statistics show consumers, who earn less than $50,000 annually, are willing to spend almost twice the premium for packaging that keeps a product fresh longer.
  4. Switching the Packaging Up: To connect with new consumers, manufacturers should consider switching products’ packaging format, material, and style; or bring a new element to enhance the full packaging look. Sticking to the basics or incorporating creative effects on packaging entices consumers to purchase.

Color plays a vital role in product packaging. Whether you’re incorporating primary or complementary colors, all colors assist brands in distinguishing product packaging and help it stand out.

Consumers pay close attention to the colors of a brand’s packaging before making their purchasing decisions.
Color is Essential to Packaging

According to Packaging Digest, colors in product labels and packaging play a huge role in the consumer’s purchasing decisions. Studies show:

  • Almost 85% of shoppers say color is the primary reason they’ve purchased a certain product.
  • 80% of shoppers say color increased brand recognition.
5 Most Popular Colors Brands Use to Convey Emotion

Colors have been known to evoke emotions. It also has a massive impact on consumers’ perception when it comes to product packaging. In fact, there are six colors, which have been identified as being critical in purchase decisions, according to an article by Inc.

Colors evoke various emotions and moods that affect consumers’ purchase decisions when shopping.
  1. Blue represents sincerity, cheer, and honesty.
  2. Red represents new, daring, exciting, and contemporary.
  3. Green represents fresh, imaginative, and communicates eco-friendly or organic as well.
  4. Purple represents unique, out of the box, edgy, yet dependable, and high-end.
  5. Orange & Yellow represents rugged, strong, cheerful, and optimistic.
4 Color Trends in Packaging

While other factors, such as brand recognition and product quality, play a part in purchasing decisions, color is still one of the most important aesthetic features to consider.

Here are four popular color trends in the product packaging industry.

  1. Pastels gained significant popularity in 2018. These colors are soothing and create a sense of calmness in consumers.
  2. Color Gradients are very popular. Everywhere you turn, you’ll be able to find color gradients – even when you’re watching a sunrise or sunset. The color transition of color gradients stimulates moods like calm, peace, or even excitement.
  3. Green – the word and the color – takes on multiple meanings. While the word represents environmental friendliness, the actual color is the indicator of its impact on the environment and the sourcing of the packaging materials. The market for environmentally friendly products is constantly growing and usually incorporates green in the packaging.
  4. Colors Are Linked to Flavors, which might not be a huge surprise. Linking colors and flavors have been a common association for quite some time. For example, linking yellow to lemon flavor and red to cherry flavor creates a quick recognition of foods. Manufacturers use this method to influence split-second purchasing decisions and to drive sales.
Consumers can already tell a juice and carbonated beverages’ flavor by its color.
Upcoming Color Trends

The Global Cosmetic Industry predicts the top colors for the 2020 Spring and Summer seasons. Colors are beginning to reflect what attracts millennial and Gen Z consumers, who are steadily gaining more purchasing power. These consumers are interested in self-expression, quirky influences, and bold visual aspects. The forecasted trends are:

  • Muted tones
  • Bright citrus hues
  • Earthy reds
  • Clinical influences

MJS Packaging has partnered with Michigan State University (MSU) as a sponsor for MSU’s new processing facility, the Food Processing & Innovation Center.

MJS Packaging is proud to sponsor MSU’s Food Processing and Innovation Center, while also providing complete packaging solutions to the center’s customers.
What Is the Food Processing and Innovation Center?

The Food Processing and Innovation Center (FPIC) is a new commercial-scale pilot plant where local Michigan food, beverage, and agriculture manufacturers can experiment and test new products and ideas. Located in Okemos, this center serves as Michigan’s leading independent commercial food research facility with the capabilities to develop, process, and package products in-house.

The FPIC aims to create a ‘real-time’ production environment that accelerates the development and creation of new product lines and processes while creating results that are long-term sustainable, profitable and generates employment.

How Local Manufacturers Can Get Involved
Manufacturers can research and develop new products in collaboration with MSU’s FPIC.

The FPIC is specifically dedicated to serving the needs of small and large-scale Michigan-based food businesses as well as large-scale startups throughout the Great Lakes region. As a fully licensed USDA/FDA certified food-processing facility, the FPIC can produce full-scale production runs for the retail marketplace.

Manufacturers can develop and process products by renting the entire center for up to three weeks, which includes 24-hour access and production use. The production center is easily adjustable to suit each manufacturer’s needs for development and specific processes. Manufacturers can even bring in their own equipment for specialty production, as well.

2 Ways Local Manufacturers Can Use FPIC For Business
  1. Manufacturers can begin research and development for new products, new processes, and new packaging ideas. The FPIC offers support for many facets of the beginning development stages.
  2. Manufacturers can produce test batches of new products to see if they will "fly" in the marketplace with consumers. The FPIC offers processing possibilities, such as heat processing, mixing and blending, and liquid filling for products. Such products include low acid foods, meat and seafood, fruits and vegetables, beverages, refrigerated products, and more.
Filling products, like beverages, is easy to do at MSU’s new processing center.

Why PET Plastic Kegs Will Be the Newest Industry Trend

Over the years there has been an ongoing debate between which is better – steel kegs or plastic. Well, we’re here to tell you there’s a new important factor being thrown into the mix: plastic kegs that are made from PET.

Now, if you don’t know what PET is, it stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate, which is a popular resin used in packaging. What’s great is that products made from PET are 100% recyclable, completely safe and meet international food contact regulations. They’re also strong, lightweight, and a dream to transport.

Environmentally friendly, completely recyclable, and lightweight. It's the next big thing!

In addition to being perfect for beer, wine, and coffee, there are many more key advantages of choosing PET plastic kegs! In fact, PET plastic kegs are so popular that they’re being called “the most competitive on the market” today.

Key Advantages of PET Plastic Kegs

100% Recyclable & One-Way

  • No cleaning
  • No loss
  • No waste
  • No return trip
  • Completely sustainable

Being able to recycle packaging and being properly informed on which products are recyclable is an extremely important consumer trend. In fact, we wrote about in our blog, The Top 5 Packaging Trends of 2018. This is one of the top key advantages that really elevate PET plastic kegs over the others.

PET plastic kegs are also one-way. This means that there’s no need to return them, unlike metal kegs. You can just empty the keg and recycle it when you’re finished! This ease of one-way recyclability completely eliminates the need to clean and repair kegs. Plus, with PET plastic kegs there’s no need worry about tracking down a lost keg ever again!

Completely Safe & Meet International Regulations

Many consumer complaints centering on plastic products is that they are unhealthy due to the types of chemical components that make up each packaging. However, PET is completely compliant with international food contact regulations, which not only ensures that the products contained within their packaging are completely safe, but that they taste great, as well. The FDA has also certified PET plastic kegs.

In addition to housing a pressure relief valve, PET plastic kegs have various barriers - all of which aids in the safety of the product.

  • O2 active barrier
  • C02 passive barrier
  • UV light-protecting barrier
They’re Logistically Logical!

Throughout the years, kegs have traditionally been made from stainless steel, which we all know is a very strong metal. However, in addition to having the same shelf life as stainless steel kegs, these alternative PET kegs enjoy some of those exact same strength advantages without the weight sacrifice.

Since PET plastic kegs are so lightweight and strong, they’re also easily stackable. It’s no wonder that these kegs are a shipping dream. The huge freight cost advantages that come from such a lightweight product make PET plastic kegs the ideal option for shipments traveling long distances.

20L Slim PET Plastic Keg

Our 20L slim keg is the perfect option for every need. Weighing in at a whopping 1.25kg (2.75lbs), these kegs are easy to handle, stack and transport. Its four different connector options all have a fitting that’s compatible to existing draft and filling systems, which makes it even more versatile.

To learn more about the other advantages of PET products, read our blog: Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) 101.

Transitioning to PET Plastic Kegs is Easy!

Transitioning to a PET keg is an easy change with no headaches or production inefficiencies. Our PET kegs are completely compatible with existing filing lines and they fill at the same speed as plastic kegs.

To learn more about how PET plastic kegs are the best option for you, contact us! We’re ready to be your complete packaging partner.

Have you seen increases in shipping rates? With a shortage of drivers, new regulations, and ever-increasing demand, the trucking industry is taking a hit in more ways than one.

From high trucking rates and driver shortages to bottlenecks and inventory concerns, it’s time to consider all the options for your freight needs. MJS Packaging is here to help.
Trucking Industry Updates

MJS Packaging has outlined the five important industry updates that you can’t afford to miss.

  1. Higher trucking rates won’t subside anytime soon. According to a June 2018 issue of the Kiplinger Letter, surging shipping demand has driven spot market rates anywhere from 25% to 30% above 2017 levels. Contract rates are also 10% to 12% higher. While it’s predicted that rate hikes will moderate by year-end, rates are not predicted to decline until sometime in 2019. Due to a pickup in manufacturing, the prices of flatbed trucks have jumped the most since they often haul raw materials and heavy equipment.
  2. Trucking firms are continuing to battle a severe driver shortage. In conjunction with an overall rough lifestyle, this shortage is made worse by high turnover of long-haul truckers and compounded regulations that limit drivers’ on-duty hours.
  3. Carriers are scrambling to improve efficiency and cut down on wasted time, requiring earlier notice from customers and trailer drop-off instead of unloading.
  4. Shipping bottlenecks are sparking changes at manufacturers and retailers. For years, manufacturers have reduced inventory costs using just-in-time deliveries to fit their production process. Big retailers have required a narrow delivery window.
Sending and receiving shipments shouldn’t have to be stressful. Our packaging solutions specialists are ready to assist you with a smile.
  5. Firms will likely end up having to hold more inventory than was normal in the past. Carriers will increasingly turn down business that’s not cost-effective and require a range of dock times, or they’ll charge more for tight delivery guarantees.
The MJS Packaging Promise

Sending and receiving shipments doesn’t have to be stressful. MJS Packaging has preferred rates in many lanes that can help ease the cost of these changing industry rates.

Give us a call today to see how we can help alleviate your shipping concerns. Our knowledgeable packaging solutions specialists are ready to assist you with a smile.
