There’s no doubt about it, the main shoe trend of SS19 is the ugly shoe. First, there were the hiking sandals, enabled by Chanel and Prada to name just a couple. Now, it’s all about flip flops. Yep, another 90s throwback, but with a cool contemporary twist of course.
In 2019, we wear flip flops with a kitten heel, and we call it the kit-flop. It comes in minimal shades of black, white or tan, perhaps elevated with a moc croc finish.
Uber-cool brands such as STAUD and Reformation are leading the way, with high-street heroes Zara and Mango following suit.
They are essentially what the stylish California girl would wear, and I’m very into that. I would in fact team it with a little floral dress, perhaps by Faithfull the Brand or other such influencer-approved brand. Because might as well go the whole hog, right?
I’ve already spotted the trend all over Instagram, on some of my favourite fashionistas such as Monikh and Ropes of Holland.
Here are a few of my favourite styles to shop now.
Maxi dresses are this season's go-to dress length for parties, weekends and work. Shop our favourite styles...
Not one for mini or midi dresses this summer? You’ll be pleased to hear maxi dresses are still on the agenda for the 2019 summer trends. But make no mistake, there’s nothing classic about this season’s take on the wardrobe essential. With luxurious textures clashes, 70s bohemian and minimal 90s styles hitting the rails, there’s never been a better time to update your dress collection.
Maxi dress trends
Are you feeling this season’s minimalist mood? Then references the 90s with silk and velvet slip dresses, strapless column dresses and everyday-ready jumper dresses. H&M maxi dresses are suitably paired back and the perfect holiday essential.
Alternatively, are you into all things boho and feminine? We’ve got a feeling you’ll love a floaty printed floor-sweeper. Complete your throwback look with an oh-so-chic fringed bag and denim jacket. There are some amazing Ganni dresses in the sale right now.
If you like a pop of colour, then you’re in luck. We’ve got everything from bright florals to bright checks, with a splash of neon. See Tory Burch maxi dresses and Max Mara dresses for some serious colour blocking. Wallflowers, abstain.
Wedding guest outfit ideas
If the invites are racking up for this summer’s weddings, bag yourself a versatile floor-skimmer that can be reworked throughout the season. Maxi dresses are a great choice for formal occasions when complemented with a statement clutch and strappy heels – Zimmermann, Kitri and Rixo are among our go-to brands when it comes to choosing something special.
If you want to try your hand at one of this season’s more daring trends, consider shopping for maxi dresses with a lace insert or cut-out detail. Team with statement sandals for a striking new season look. We love high street brands Zara, & Other Stories and Mango for trendier pieces.
From cosy weekend knitted staples to workwear-appropriate long shirts, or even a summer-holiday ready off-the-shoulder chambray number, there’s a dress for all shapes, styles and budgets right here.

When it comes to chic tailoring with luxe sport refinement and clothes that women ACTUALLY want to wear Sportmax have been nailing it season after season. Which is why, when we heard that for pre fall 2019 they were adding eyewear and sneakers into the mix, we knew it would be love at first sight.
A fine example of Italian craftsmanship and expertise, graphic elements are fused with exquisite and contemporary detailing. And with contrasting materials, colours and silhouette, these are the perfect go-to accessories from any discerning stylish woman. Full of energy, dynamism and movement, the addition of sneakers and eyewear sees the heritage of Sportmax being re-interpreted in a futuristic way.
Injecting personality into your style has never been easier, thanks to the Eyewear Collection. From wire frames to flat metallic numbers, there really is something for everyone.
We’re championing the strikingly beautiful red full glass frame and modern clear acetate pair which are confidently chic in their simplicity. And, for those that prefer to play things slightly safer, you’ll be pleased to know that they also come in black, but with a contemporary silhouette this is a pair of sunglasses that still manages to offer that certain je ne sais quoi.
The sock shoe trend isn’t going away anytime soon, they just seem to be getting better and better in our humble opinion, so a collection with varying colour ways is just what we have been looking for. We’re particularly enamoured by these beauties with their considered design elements like overlapping layers and stand out 3D concentric circles on the sole, which really sets them apart from the pack. The sneakers drop in July and will be available at all Sportmax shopping destinations.
Toughen up a floaty feminine dress or team with leather shorts and a ribbed jersey top to really elevate your look. Quite frankly, this is the perfect way to step in the sneaker trend.
Feeling fed up looking at the same old summer wardrobe? Then it might be time to invest in one of the new dress trends of 2019. Like most years there are so many styles to choose from – including old classics like the floral maxi and silky slip – so to make things easy we’ve rounded up the top twelve frocks you’ll want to wear all summer long. All that’s left to do is name the occasion and pick your price…
Yes it’s true what they say; the wrap dress is one of the most figure flattering frocks whatever your shape and size. It nips in at the waist and effortlessly skims over hips and thighs. To ensure your wrap dress ticks multiple SS19 trend boxes why not opt for one in a gingham check or picnic blanket plaid?
Thanks to brands such as De La Vali and Cult Gaia the slinky silky maxi has become one of the key dress trends of 2019. Although typically this style of dress is reserved for formal occasions and events, this summer we’ve spotted some of our favourite Instagram stars styling theirs with casual flat sandals and beach bags creating the perfect dressed-up daytime look.
If you don’t already own a polka dot printed dress then it’s time to invest pronto. Not only were the SS’19 catwalks packed full of statement spots, it’s also quickly become the go-to print amongst the A-list style set, having been spotted lately on everyone from Kate Middleton to Priyanka Chopra.
Beach breaks, weddings, festivals and staycations are all ideal for the classic silky slip… In fact we can’t think of an occasion that this trusty dress doesn’t suit! Yep, this single garment offers plenty of style mileage and can even work in winter too; just layer over a fine roll-neck or style with an oversized chunky knit.
Whether shopping high end or on the high street you can’t hide from floral frocks this summer. And why you want to? From pretty petal prints to bold botanical blooms there’s a flower power pattern whatever your vibe and style.
Now we all know the shirt-dress is nothing new but there’s many good reasons why this trend makes a return season after season and is high up on our list of 2019 dress trends. Most notably is the fact that it’s guaranteed to go with pretty much anything and everything in your existing wardrobe. Dress it down for day-time with sneakers and a denim jacket or add a pair of strappy barely-there sandals and statement earrings for those long summer nights.
Ever since Rixo arrived on the scene a few years ago we’ve been crushing on their clever combination of different prints. And now with other brands following suit it’s no surprise the clashing print has become a fully-fledged dress trend of 2019. Forget a shy and subtle approach; a dress this loud and proud deserves to be styled with an equally as bold bag and some statement accessories.
Thanks to the likes of Chloe and Fendi neutral shades, such as sand, oat and camel, have quickly become this season’s hottest colour palette. And, despite what you think, these beige tones are anything but bland; in fact an understated beige dress can help fast track your look to the next level of effortless chic. Keep the rest of your outfit paired back with minimal accessories and simple shoes and you’ve got the ‘Oh, I just threw it on’ look nailed!
Ruffles are back in a big way this summer. And whilst the may feel frilly, delicate and dainty Henry Holland has no problem in showing us how to make them fun and fearsome with this bold and bright number.
Lace, crochet and Broderie Anglaise will always be synonymous with bohemian beach get-aways or romantic city breaks however that doesn’t mean you can’t wear them back at home as well as on holiday. This throw-on-and-go midi by Ganni is perfect for both work and play.
Tight microscopic pleats may be small but this new trend is anything but. As featured on the SS’19 runways at Valentino and Givenchy, the plissé pleat is the detail to don this summer! Pick a pleated mini in a candyfloss pink for an extra feminine feel – an ideal look for weddings and summer garden soirees.
Before she was the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle was paving the way for kick-ass female paralegals everywhere for 7 seasons of the hit TV show Suits. The show is known for giving viewers a peek into the lives of high-powered New York City attorneys… but it is also a goldmine of formal and classic work-attire inspiration.
Markle’s on-screen character, Rachel Zane, mastered office chic and the art of power dressing – often seen in monochromatic colour palettes, form-fitting silhouettes and sky-high court shoes. She may have traded in the courthouse for Frogmore Cottage, but Markle, who admitted to being in awe of Rachel’s wardrobe, has left a capsule of memorable outfits to drool over.
Here are our top picks to inspire your workwear wardrobe:

Rachel is almost always seen in a fitted shirt or knit when on the job, her shirts are slightly unbuttoned adding a sexy, feminine touch to the uniformed look.

To brave the New York City breeze, you’ve got to be classic, tailored and comfy… and Rachel frequently rocked a tailored knit, tucked into a matching pencil skirt – the epitome of practical and chic.

Rarely venturing into statement pieces, this violet ruffled look is a subtle nod to the spring season and complemented the paralegal’s everyday aesthetic perfectly.

Rachel seems to have a soft spot for pencil skirts, and is more often than not seen in a neutral-toned skirt paired with a white shirt. Here, she wears the shirt buttoned down and cuffed which gives a perfect off-duty look.

Grey and blue is a staple work combo, and Rachel, who always defies the norm, gives it a little tweak with a slouchy turtleneck.
Although we miss seeing the “legal superhero” and new mum on our screens, she sure as hell left a mark on our wardrobe…
I don’t mean to brag, but I think I’ve found the perfect summer dress, and my friends all agree with me.
It all started when I visited the Zara showroom to take a peek at their summer collection. Amongst the many racks of pastel and neon goodies, this white number stood out to me immediately in its simplicity.
The spaghetti straps, slightly curved bodice and full skirt all gave it that classic-in-the-making potential.
It hadn’t launched yet, so I waited and waited, refreshing the Zara website everyday until finally, it appeared, for the very friendly price of £39.99.
I tried it on yesterday when it arrived, and what can I say? It’s even better than I remembered, and quite possibly the most flattering thing I’ve worn in a while. So excited was I that I immediately shared it on my stories, and got so many compliments.
In fact, at least 10 people I know have now either bought it or are about to, testament to the dress’ power.
So my advice to you: get it before it sells out, you won’t regret it.
Its one of our favourite High Street stores, if you're not shopping in Lindex with its collections full of on trend but wearable pieces, hello comfy denim, dreamy dresses and their sustainable line. Where have you been ?
AJ Odudu in Lindex x By Malina
So Lindex x By Malina what do we need to know? Its the newest drop on the High Street and we are obsessed. Their first collaboration with the Swedish fashion brand By Malina. With its bright colours and gorgeous unique prints, think seashells and palm trees. Modelled by three influencers, one peak at the campaign images of Nina Sandbech from Norway, AJ Odudu from the UK or Margaux Dietz from Sweden make us want to be on holiday, like NOW, wearing it all head to toe right?
Nina Sandbech in Lindex x By Malina
Founder of By Malina, Malin Ek Andren told us ‘The collections was inspired by the heat of the Mediterranean, with thin, lightweight fabrics designed for the effortless woman. Over the years, Ive often felt that packing for vacation is a struggle and I wanted to change that with this selection of garments. They’re simply the perfect items to take on a Summer getaway!’’ We couldn’t agree more! There is something about packing for a trip that brings team Marie Claire out in a rash so we are all over anything that delivers on the fashion front. Not just for holidays, the collection is full of pieces you can wear at home too, just add a slouchy knit over the tiered maxi dress and Stan Smiths for a easy weekend look.
Our favourite pieces would have to be, anything in the broderie anglaise, the high waisted bikini, with its flattering tie detail and the printed tiered maxi dress which is the perfect piece in your suitcase to accommodate all those long holiday lunches.
If you’ve been following Manu Atelier‘s journey, you’ll know that the brand has slowly but surely achieved cult status thanks to handbag styles that hit the sweet spot between classic and modern. Its celebrity fans include Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Middleton and Bella Hadid.
Now the designer duo, Beste and Merve Manastir have launched a shoe collection, and they’re a hit already. The nine styles include everything from the naked sandal (the shoe of the summer) to the Victorian lace-up boot (the shoe of the winter), so you’re bound to find one that sparks joy for you.
Here, the sisters talk through their inspiration and how far they’ve come.
You started off with bags, were you planning shoes all along or was it just a natural progression?
As the designers of Manu Atelier, me and my sister/partner had a woman in our minds when we created the brand. For us, bags have always been special since we grew up in the work-shop watching our father designing and crafting them. And we wanted to complement them with shoes that have Manu aesthetics and brand values such as quality, design and craftsmanship for the modern people of the new age to enjoy fullest. After a precise process for footwear line, we thought it is the perfect time to present wearable, strong and playful shoes with our new bag collection.
How long did it take from the idea to the production?
We spent almost two years before launching Manu footwear. It’s really important for us to create the right shape with the perfect last and quality. And while doing that, we also wanted to keep our price range affordable. Gathering all those aspects together, finding the right craftsmen and to create the right pair of shoes- at the same time and at the right time- took a while but here we are now with our first footwear collection.
What was the inspiration behind the shoes?
We wanted the designs to be compatible with today’s world and we also wanted them to be distinctive. They all have common points; design, quality and craftsmanship. We aimed to give the feeling of confidence and joy with playful patterns, colours, cutting details and most importantly the lasting power and the shoes being really light on the feet. Cause our main inspiration is the modern woman of the new age.
Did/do you ever worry about working together as sisters?
We work together in every single stage of both creative and business side. Of course it causes some conflicts but we believe these disagreements are bringing us to the right point eventually. We are lucky to have the same taste with different perspectives. So these differences and similarities give us to get the right point with a strong family relation. Because at the end of the day, to be able to create something with your family is a unique feeling. And no, we never worry about working together, on the contrary we always worry about if we had to work separately.
You’ve worked a lot with influencers, and now become influencers yourselves, do you think there is a big link between social media and fashion today?
Right now, there is. Social media links people, from all around the world. And fashion is social, it’s cultural, it’s political, it’s historical. The link is inevitable between them. For us, social media is a way of telling our story, our values and the influencers who are part of our community, are our friends, they are real people that we admire in our non-social media lives as well.
If you had to pick one shoe from the collection, which one would it be?
The duck boots, followed by the mules and the sandals.
The Harry Potter films might have wrapped eight years ago (yes, it really has been that long), but our obsession with the magical world is stronger than ever. Daniel Radcliffe recently spoke about the movies getting a reboot in the not so distant future, and we’re forever being spoilt with all things HP – from magical pop-up bars to beautiful and delicate themed jewellery.
So many Potterheads were thrilled to find out that something was on its way to fill that Harry Potter footwear-shaped void in our lives.
Vans teased a magical collaboration back in April, and we finally have the official pictures of the shoes. A word of warning: you’ll love and want them all.
Each Hogwarts house has been transformed into footwear form. The Gryffindor-inspired Sk8-Hi has red and gold stripes against black suede with an embroidered lion crest on the side.
Slytherin is a green and black Era trainer with a snake of the tongue, while Ravenclaw is an Authentic checkerboard in blue and white.
Finally, Hufflepuff is a sensible black Classic Slip-On in with the yellow crest stitched onto the front.
‘Whether goofy foot or regular stance, Gryffindor or Slytherin, the Vans x Harry Potter footwear and apparel collection will appeal to all enthusiasts of Vans and the Wizarding World,’ the brand has said in a statement.
And rumour has it there will be even more styles as part of the collection but there’s no official launch date just yet – so we’ll keep you posted as soon as we get any more info.
