Last May, your Manila Millennial shared a DIY trick on how to get temporary pink hair color via Instagram. However, if you check out our IG Feed and Stories, you’ll notice how we still have traces of pink even until the first week of June – something that should’ve already been completely washed away by now. That’s the main reason why we ended up at La Provence in BGC: To get our hair color back in ship-shape. Is the outcome a yeah or meh? Verdict can be found below.

We’ve heard of La Provence before, but little did we know that it’s closer than what we’ve expected. It’s just a few steps away from Shangri-La, The Fort; The Fort Strip, and High Street! This first ever French café and salon (for both men and women) in Manila offers not just food and hair services, but also facial & massage, semi-permanent makeup, and waxing, to name a few.

CONSULTATION

Each visit to La Provence starts with a consultation to know your preferred cut and/or color, your budget, how long it will take, and what suits you best. Friendly staff will be greeting you from the entrance and will be referring you to their stylist. Ask all your questions here so you won’t end up with regrets! Their Senior Stylist, George, was the one who assisted me during my visit. We ended up with an agreement to add ash blonde highlights since I only have around three hours left before my next event.

GETTING ASH BLONDE HIGHLIGHTS

Adding highlights to long strands of hair is a meticulous process. It’s amazing how George and his assistant, Cindy, managed to color everything without excess dye dripping elsewhere. My hair had to be clipped and foiled into parts so the color will only seep through specific strands.

Sitting in front of their Wella Color Bar, I was able to watch how they mixed different dyes and treatments that will be applied onto my hair. It’s like watching a bartender, only with different tools and within a relaxing atmosphere.

After 20 minutes of bleaching, it took an additional 15+ minutes to recoat each partition with ash blonde hues, and more time to blend the color through my pink-infused hair. To strengthen hair fibers, Wellaflex was applied as a finishing coat.

As a finishing touch, my hair was curled so I can appreciate the ash blonde highlights more as the strands added multidimensional effects to my hair which now has an ombre touch of well-blended pink. Their Creative Director, Mehdi, also dropped by to chat with us. A+ for customer engagement!

PRICE AND DISCOUNTS

Thumbs up! (Right) La Provence Senior Stylist George and (Left) his assistant, Cindy, with your Manila Millennial.

Getting highlights from a Senior Stylist would originally cost you P5,000 but since La Provence has a lot of discounts until July 15, you can get this service for 20% off. Your Manila Millennial still has a couple of coupons that can get you 10-50% off on waxing, hair perming, haircut, treatments, facial, and foot spa so just get in touch with us ASAP and we can give it to you when you drop by BGC.

On a personal note, the place is quite pricey but with the quality of pampering and various services that La Provence and their staff provide, we’d say they deserve to be paid with that amount. That, on top of being a French Salon with well-trained staff who participates in exhibitions within the industry. No worries because you’ll get your money’s worth!

INTERIORS

Here’s a peek at the interiors of the place. It’s very fancy, bright, and worthy of landing a spot in your Instagram feed:

A private space for those who want to hideaway while getting their hair fixed.

Indoor plants and nice lights add a relaxing vibe to the area.

The place is well lit, perfect for mirror shots while you’re there.

THE VERDICT

Getting plain highlights for the first time (minus the ombre balayage effect), I ended up wishing that I knew how good it looked like sooner. I would’ve skipped numerous full hair colors then! The ash bonde highlights are more prominent on the top and back of the head and the outcome looks way better when curled or tied up in a bun or ponytail. With this result, getting highlights would definitely be a YEAH from Manila Millennial.

Thinking of getting highlights or a hair color soon? Visit La Provence at the 3rd floor of Central Square, 5th Avenue, Taguig City. For instant updates on our whereabouts and new style finds, follow Manila Millennial on FacebookTwitterand Instagram.

Let the food hunt begin! We heard that there are restaurants within Bonifacio Global City that will be offering new dip-and-dish creations this June, and each has been created by top names in the culinary industry – Chef Fernando Aracama, Chef Sau del Rosario, Chef Rob Pengson, and Chef Kalel Chan. The four chefs teamed up with Unilever Food Solutions (UFS) to launch their limited-edition dip-and-dish creations made with Lady’s Choice Real Mayonnaise, which will be made exclusively available at their restaurants for only two weeks, starting June 1.

Here’s a roundup of their creations, and where you can find them for your next dinner or night-cap:

Garlic Parmesan Fries with special Bull’s Eye dip (left) and Sweet Potato Chips with Smoked Bangus Dip (right)

Chef Fern offers a creative take on the classic Bangus tinapa with Smoked Bangus Dip — a smooth & flavorful dip with umami rich premium smoked milk fish enriched with Lady’s Choice Mayonnaise, a touch of tart Greek yogurt, fresh lemon juice & zest, green onions and togarashi spice. The delicious dip pairs perfectly with a bowl of crispy taro & sweet potato chips, perfect for the adventurous palate, available at Aracama Manila.

For the perfect night-cap at Early Night?, Chef Fern will be serving his Garlic Parmesan Fries with a special Bull’s Eye dip. This is a creamy savory dip with mayonnaise, flavored with sweet roasted garlic in extra virgin olive oil. A punchy tomato jam with smoked chipotle peppers give the fun dip a warm contrast that works wonderfully when dipped with parmesan-tossed fries.

He shares, “On its own these two dips are great but when you combine them together it just becomes fantastic! It’s an updated version of my childhood comfort food. With Lady’s Choice at the delicious core of the dishes, it instantly gives dips its full, rich flavor with a smooth and creamy finish.”

Aracama Manila and Early Night? is located at The Fort Strip, 5th Avenue, Corner 26th Street, BGC.

Thai Soft Shell Crab with Asian Aioli

A potential crowd-favorite to be served at the hip and trendy James and Daughters restaurant, Chef Rob Pengson’s creation — the Thai Soft Shell Crab with Asian Aioli is infused with Thai herbs, tamarind glaze and a miso mayonnaise with Lady’s Choice. The fresh and aromatic blend of Asian spices gives the dish just the right balance of earthy flavors with a crunchy and tangy kick.

When asked what the inspiration was behind his concept dish, Chef Rob shared, “I’ve always loved Asian flavors because it’s so easy to play around with, you can put together a variety of dishes depending on what flavor you want to come out. The crunch of the Soft-Shell Crab and the mayo go so well with each other, it’s comforting and unintimidating. Thai flavors infused with the crab compliment the dip, plus the miso ads umami flavor that gives it the extra oomph.”

Order this exclusive Thai Soft Shell Crab at James and Daughters Restaurant, G/F The Westin Residences, Manila Sonata, 21st Drive, BGC.

Kang Kong Moringa Tinapa Melt Dip with Mushroom Chicharon Chips (left) and Fried Sinigang na Bangus with Salted Egg Mayonesa (right)

Guaranteed to intrigue with its powerful and creative use of flavors, Raintree Restaurants’ Corporate Chef, Kalel Chan, has whipped up a Kang Kong Moringa Tinapa Melt Dip with Mushroom Chicharon Chips. The Kang Kong Moringa puree blend with cream cheese and Lady’s Choice Mayonnaise, gratinated with cheddar cheese and served with a fried lightly-coated oyster mushroom, is perfect for the health-conscious snacker. Chef Kalel’s Fried Sinigang na Bangus with Salted Egg Mayonesa is a colorful masterpiece and fresh creation made with egg dressing topped with tomato, red onions, spring onions, egg yolk and egg whites. It’s too pretty to even take a bite!

“Compared to the traditional mayonesa, I made it a little bit creative by adding salted egg dressing instead of plain mayo and a hint of sinigang flavor into the daing na bangus. I envisioned to offer something a group of friends and family would enjoy, such as the mayonesa since it’s usually served in gatherings. Balancing it off with a healthier dish alternative makes the dining experience a bit guilt-free,” shared Chef Kalel.

Hurry to Friends & Family and Coconut Club for these limited-edition dishes located at G/F Bonifacio Central Square, 7th Street, BGC.

Crab Cake with Spicy Sriracha Dip (left) and Salted Egg yolk Prawn Rebosado with Calamansi Aligue Aioli (right)

In case you’re heading to Pampanga this weekend, look for the dish that completes this list: A savory and refreshing dish to end the summer season, a mouthwatering Crab Cake with Spicy Sriracha Dip and Salted Egg yolk Prawn Rebosado with Calamansi Aligue Aioli. Pampanga-native Chef Sau del Rosario took inspiration from the abundance of seafood the Philippines is blessed with.

“There is a surplus of sustainable seafood readily available in almost all markets around the country. Matched with the familiar favorite taste of Lady’s Choice, the dish is already complete without having to over-complicate it and add too much. It has the full, savory flavor diners will love,” said Chef Sau.

You can find these tangy must-haves at Café Fleur Restaurant, L-463B Miranda Street, Barangay Sto. Rosario, Angeles City, Pampanga and at 2F Dycaico Ancestral House, Barangay Sto. Rosario, Angeles City, Pampanga.

Full of fresh ingredients, flavors and love, these culinary mavericks have created these dishes to inspire other chefs and cooks to create their own new dip-and-dish masterpieces with the use of the ever-versatile Lady’s Choice Real Mayonnaise, and to excite consumers to watch out for more flavorful creations coming from the first-ever Choice of the Nation competition.

If you can also create a dip that’s worthy of the title Choice of the Nation, submit your full dip recipe using Lady’s Choice® Real Mayonnaise! Just upload 1-3 photos and the name of the dip on www.ladyschoiceofthenation.com. Submission of recipes will run up until June 30, 2018. All qualified entries will be part of the online voting period for diners to determine the top ten chefs and cooks who will be showcasing their dishes at the Choice of the Nation cook-off on August 2018. The first Choice of the Nation grand winner will get to take home a cash prize of P100,000 while our first and second runners-up will take home P80,000 and P50,000, respectively, plus special gifts pack from UFS.

(Note: My alien-mystery-loving self is currently shaking as I write this update.)

After skipping last year’s HISTORY CON, Ancient AliensGiorgio A. Tsuokalos (the same guy you’ll see in alien-related memes) will be returning to Manila this August for HISTORY CON 2018!  If you can remember our Instagram and Facebook updates from 2016, you’ll know that we were close to tears as staff informed us that his session was already full, so if you share the same sentiments, keep reading so you’ll know where to buy tickets way ahead of his live session.

Remember him from the “aliens” meme? (Photo taken from… it’s all over the Internet!)

Like previous conventions, this year’s activities are still slated to happen at the World Trade Center in Pasay City from August 10 to 12, 2018. To add, your Manila Millennial has been part of this world-class entertainment convention’s record-breaking attendance of 68,800 people in 2017 and 50,000 people in 2016 so we’re stoked for this year’s event! HISTORY fans, me included, have been raving about Tsoukalos’ return to the Philippines since his first appearance at HISTORY CON in 2016.

Tsoukalos, leading contributor and co-executive producer of the show Ancient Aliens (one of our favorites!), will headline this year’s powerhouse roster of international and local celebrities to ignite fun and excitement in the third edition of a highly anticipated event. Produced by Prometheus Entertainment, Ancient Aliens is a top-rating sci-fi series which explores the theory that extra-terrestrials have been visiting the Earth for millions of years.

“I am incredibly excited to be returning to Manila for HISTORY CON 2018. The Philippines is home to some of Ancient Aliens’ most passionate fans, and I look forward to delving into some of the most enduring questions surrounding Ancient Astronaut Theory and engaging in the age-old debate: did extra-terrestrial beings really help shape human history?” said Tsoukalos.

This year, Tsoukalos headlines the exclusive live session, “Mysteries of the Past with Giorgio A. Tsoukalos.”  Like Ancient Aliens, the special talk with limited slots available brings together truth-seekers and HISTORY fans in a discussion, debate, and exploration with the leading expert himself.

Take note: Only those who avail of the HISTORY MAKER VIP Pass or HISTORY Maker Pass can request for slots when they attend Tsoukalos’ live session.

Interested HISTORY CON fans may choose from three different ticketing categories, each with exclusive privileges: the HISTORY MAKER VIP Pass (P10,000) has only 100 limited tickets available; the HISTORY MAKER Pass (P2,500) is good for a three-day admission; and GENERAL ADMISSION Pass (P350) entitles bearers to a one-day access to the star-studded convention. Tickets are available for sale exclusively on SM Tickets.

For a peek at last year’s HISTORY CON, visit our previous stories:

Fingers crossed, we’ll get the chance to share photos during the day of the event so don’t forget to follow Manila Millennial on FacebookTwitterand Instagram! For more details about the upcoming sessions, visit:

Yup, that’s right! A Japanese multinational corporation is celebrating Independence Day with us by supporting locally-made products. Not all foreign-led businesses give this much importance to local products but it’s as good as it seems because Sharp Philippines Corporation (SPC), one of the leading electronics manufacturer in the country, is joining the festivities for the 120th year of Philippine Independence on Tuesday (June 12, 2018) by launching the We Love Philippines campaign for 120 days.

For the past 36 years, SPC has been manufacturing colored televisions, washing machines, electric fans, and karaoke machines while consistently remaining strong in the market. I’ve been exposed to their products ever since I’ve been born in this world – no joke. These products have already been part of the Filipino life and have undoubtedly contributed to the country’s economy despite being headed by a multinational corporation. Since 1982, Sharp has already produced 3.9 million units of color TV, 8.2 million units of washing machine and 2.1 million units of karaoke machines.

As announced by its President and General Manager, Mr. Kazuo Kito, during the press launch last May, SPC will start its We Love Philippines campaign in July of this year. This campaign is one of the strategies of Sharp to promote the importance of supporting Philippine-made products.

Through this, SPC will show their appreciation to its loyal Filipino customers by giving away exciting prizes and offering special promotions that will run for 120 days from July 1 to end of October in commemoration of the nation’s 120th year of independence.

With its strong manufacturing operations that are backed by Japanese technology, SPC commits to continuously provide new and exciting locally-made products which give back to the Philippines through the economy. Fingers crossed, let’s see how this goes for the betterment of our country!

Getting invited to witness L’Oreal and UNESCO award this year’s For Women in Science (FWIS) National Fellow, we can’t help but think of inspiring stories like mathematician Dorothy Vaughan’s in the movie Hidden Figures or the challenges faced by women in NASA in plays like Silent Sky as we listened to speakers at the Century City Mall last Tuesday (June 5, 2018). Standing in front of professionals, students, and the media, distinguished guests gave everyone a feel of what’s it like to work in a field that is being dominated by men and what foundations are doing to further empower women and encourage young scientists to pursue their dreams. Truly, these stories are as real as movies may portray.

(L-R) Ms. Rina Jimenez-David, Dr. Didith Rodrigo, Dr. Marieta Sumagaysay, Dr. Laura David, and Dr. Aletta Yñiguez.

Truth be told, women account for only 30% of the world’s researchers, and with even lower percentages at higher decision-making levels. In response, L’Oréal and UNESCO founded the FWIS program in 1998 with the mission to empower more women in the field of sciences by increasing the number of women in scientific research, promoting more young women to enter the profession, and to assist them once their careers are in progress.  Since its launch, the program has supported more than 3,100 women scientists from 117 countries and celebrated 102 renowned scientists at the peak of their careers including three who have won a Nobel Prize. The Philippines has had the privilege of seeing Dr. Lourdes Cruz win as a Global Laureate (2010) for her work with snail toxins and has had four Filipina scientists awarded as National Fellows (2011 and 2012).

WOMEN WHO WOW

This year, we are honored to be part of the country’s new milestone. We share Dr. Charissa Ferrera’s success as the FWIS Philippines National Fellow 2018 with her study in chemical oceanography. With a relevant and timely research on the water quality in coastal areas and fishing localities particularly Bolinao and Anda, Dr. Ferrera pushes for sustainable mariculture by advocating to help communities recover from effects of pollution through effective science communication.

The world’s oceans are heavily affected by human activities, including overfishing, posing major threats to marine biodiversity and coastal habitats. An advocate for sustainable fisheries management, L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science 2018 Philippine National Fellow, Dr. Charissa Ferrera’s work is focused on educating and advocating for more sustainable practices among fishermen and local government units, specifically in Anda and Bolinao.

“I see my win as an opportunity to create a ripple effect that will allow for more individuals to be inspired to pursue careers in science,” shares Dr. Ferrera on winning the fellowship. As a woman who dared to ask, she hopes to encourage women who want to become researchers to stay motivated. “Look for opportunities because they are there and do not be afraid to ask. Always go for what you want and keep going no matter the circumstances,” advised Dr. Ferrera.

(L-R) Columnist Ms. Rina Jimenez-David moderates a panel discussion with distinguished scientists: Dr. Didith Rodrigo, Dr. Marieta Sumagaysay, Dr. Laura David, and Dr. Aletta Yñiguez, as they shared their experiences as women scientists and provided guidance to aspiring scientists.

We also had the chance to hear firsthand how it was rampant for women to shift to a different field just because of gender roles that seem to fit in other caring professions such as being a doctor. Included in the forum were Dr. Didith Rodrigo, Scientist and Author of Women in Science Children’s Books; Dr. Marieta Sumagaysay, Executive Director, National Research Council of the Philippines; Dr. Laura David, FWIS Philippines National Fellow 2011; and Dr. Aletta Yñiguez, FWIS Philippines National Fellow 2012, to name a few. Each shared on their experiences as Filipina scientists and the opportunities that they see to develop more thought leadership in the community.

More than just an awarding ceremony, the forum tackled the multifaceted challenges of gender inequality in the field of science, recognized women’s contributions across various fields, and underscored the critical need for their full participation in driving the sustainable development agenda.

THE SIX-POINT MANIFESTO

A commitment to empowering women in science: Representatives from L’Oréal, UNESCO, NAST, and the scientific community come together to sign the manifesto pushing for increased women participation and success in the field of science.

To end the program, a six-point manifesto was signed by representatives from L’Oréal, UNESCO, National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), and the community to pledge support for the following:

  • Break down the barriers that prevent women scientists from pursuing long-term careers in research.
  • Celebrate with the public the contribution that women scientists make to scientific progress and to society.
  • Promote mentoring and networking for young scientists to enable them to plan and develop careers that meet their expectations.
  • Encourage girls to explore scientific career paths.
  • Prioritize women’s access to senior positions and leadership positions in the sciences.
  • Ensure gender equality through participation and leadership in symposiums and scientific commissions such as conferences, committees, and board meetings.

Knowing that such programs are in place, we’re hopeful that the Philippines (and the world) will give more importance to women’s roles in society, especially in a time like this when misogyny is starting to creep up the system once again.

Here’s a lovely flower for the strong women who are making a name for themselves out there!

“Kilay is life,” they say, but getting late for work just for those eyebrows on fleek would be a no-no for any millennial who is working towards his/her life goals. To save time in getting prepped up in the morning, your Manila Millennial tried a famous beauty aesthetic procedure called Eyebrow Microblading – a form of eyebrow embroidery or semi-permanent tattoo – from a Korean beauty aesthetics clinic called Hallyu Secret. If ever you’re curious about it and this beauty essential that is also part of the Korean wave (english translation of “hallyu”), keep reading because we’ll take you through the procedure, maintenance, and the challenges we faced within the first seven days.

Last Saturday (June 2, 2018), we gave you a peek at the highlights of our microblading experience at Hallyu Secret Aesthetics and Training Center in Greenhills, but we didn’t get the chance to share what it’s like to get poked by super small chisel-like needles. It may sound scary but believe me when I say that I did not feel a thing because my pain tolerance is really really low.

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE

Where all the magic happens.

Unlike traditional cosmetic tattoos, Eyebrow Microblading is less invasive and looks more natural with its effects that can last for over a year, depending on a person’s skin type and skincare routine. It uses techniques such as feathering and shadowing for natural-looking brows.

The small blade is used to deposit pigments made out of herbs and natural ingredients into the skin and create shadows that resemble real hair. You may liken it to an artsy tattoo, but microblading only reaches the superficial layers of the skin which tends to shed out through time. Although it’s semi-permanent, retouches from time to time can help you maintain your look.

After the consultation, the consultants will determine if you can or cannot push through with the procedure. Customers who are allergic to needles, metals, and specific food that are part of the pigments’ ingredients (mostly herbs) may be recommended to try a different service instead.

STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS AT HALLYU SECRET
  1. Assessment and Consultation

I wasn’t 100% prepared when I visited the clinic so I quickly searched for nice brows on Google after the keywords “eyebrows on fleek”. (Left photo courtesy of Ms. Kris Candyd of Hallyu Secret, right photo from Google Search)

After being greeted by Hallyu Secret’s friendly staff, Korean Beauty Consultant LK Park will be asking you questions before proceeding with the next steps. She speaks in Korean so Raphael Jung, co-owner, assists by translating her words into English. During the consultation, LK will be explaining the procedure to make sure that you know what you’re getting yourself into! You’ll also be asked to sign waivers and indicate all your allergies on a piece of paper.

Tip: Bring a photo of the eyebrow shape that you prefer so you can show it to LK. She’ll be giving her own recommendations whether or not that shape will look good on you as well.

  1. Topical Anesthesia

All good!

A 20-minute window time for you to calm your mind while waiting for your turn! Here, a Hallyu Secret staff will be applying a topical anesthesia on your brows and wrap it in a cling wrap. Your eyebrows will start to numb after a few minutes, but you won’t feel anything weird.

  1. Drawing/Shaping

Look at all that space to be filled out.

You’ll be asked to transfer to their microblading room where LK will be removing the cling wrap and excess anesthesia from your eyebrows. She’ll start to draw the shape that you want and ask if they’re too thick or thin for your liking. Everything will be for your approval, of course.

  1. Microblading

Doesn’t sting even a bit.

Once the shape has been set, LK will start filling in the shape using a mix of pigments that you’ve requested for. Colors range from dark brown to a lighter shade of brown. At this point, you won’t feel that there are small blades slicing through your eyebrows. All is well!

  1. Shading/ Feathering

Extra touches for that “combo” effect – feathering and shadowing.

As finishing touches, a mix of Korean-style shading and feathering will be added to create a more natural look.

  1. Adding Tint

Don’t worry, all that mess will be removed later on.

This is the only part of the process where you’ll feel a bit of stinging sensation on your brows. LK will be warning you that it will hurt a bit before she applies the final tint. She’ll proceed to apply a layer of tint on both brows and cover it with a cling wrap for around 5 minutes. The pain disappears after a few seconds, though.

  1. Finishing Touch: Care Cream

After removing the tint, LK will be removing the residue from your eyebrows and apply a care cream that you’ll need to apply over and over again for the next few days.

MAINTENANCE
  • Care cream must be applied every time that your brows feel dry
  • Do not scrub the brow area within the first 2 weeks
  • If possible, do not wet the brow area during the first 3 days
  • Do not scratch or pick scabs, if there are any
  • Do not apply brow products within the first month
  • Do not touch your brows with your bare hands, use cotton buds instead
  • Use blade when removing excess hair. Do not undergo threading!
PRICE

L-R: Raphael Jung (Hallyu Secret co-owner), me, and LK Park (Korean Beauty Consultant and Trainer). Thank you to co-owner Ms. Kris Candyd for taking this photo!

Regular price would be at P30,000 but since Hallyu Secret is on soft opening, this can be availed for only P15,000 until July 30, 2018. Honestly, this is already a fair price given that the person behind the microblade is already a Korean instructor. When you check other clinics that offer the same service, prices usually range from P20,000 – P30,000 from an expert level.

In case you won’t be able to drop by soon, you can show our discount code CESKNWSCRT in order to get 10% off ANY regular service from Hallyu Secret.

OTHER SERVICES AT HALLYU SECRET

Hallyu Secret is a treasure trove of Korean-inspired services that any Filipino, provided that they’re willing to spend, will love. They have nail care and nail art, Korean facial treatments, semi-permanent makeup services like mascara, eyelash extensions, lips pigmentation, and BB Glow, acne treatment programs, anti-aging treatments, slimming services, and warts removal, to name a few.

THE VERDICT

I really loved how a 2-hour eyebrow microblading session can save me a lot of time when getting ready for work or an event. The procedure has no downtime and I was even able to attend another event right after my visit at Hallyu Secret.

It may seem weird at first because the pigments appear so dark during the first 3 days. It’s a challenge to keep your brows away from chemicals especially for someone like me whose day isn’t complete without facial wash and cleansers. I’ve also made it a habit to apply the topical care cream that has been provided every time my brows felt dry. On the 4th and 5th day, I observed that there are small peelings on my brows but they’re not that obvious so I didn’t really mind. On the 6th and 7th day, the tattooed strands appeared so light, it seems like I was born with full brows. I’m expecting the tint to reappear in the next few days.

Over-all, I’d still love to come back for a retouch and try more services at Hallyu Secret. For now, I can only trust the process and “brow fairy” LK Park’s words! If you’re interested to try their services, make sure to reserve a slot first to ensure that the experts can accommodate you.

Bringing together arts, culture, and fashion in diverse ways, fashion designers from the Philippine Fashion Gala 2018 brought their A-game to the runways at Green Sun Hotel in Makati City last Saturday (June 2, 2018). Aside from the unique creations, ‘Lokal’ paved the way for models of different races, gender, nationality, and sizes to come together for an epic collection that proves that fashion doesn’t have limitations.

Jennica Castro’s Collection

There were three shows – 4 PM, 6 PM, and 8 PM. Manila Millennial went to the final show to show support for our dear friend Jihan who invited us to the said event. Both young and professional fashion designers were given an avenue to showcase their creations before an ecstatic audience who want to see the grandeur of local culture translated into outfits.

We’re letting the photos speak for the event, but we still hope that more fashion shows will be as open as the Philippine Fashion Gala in terms of how they choose their models. After all, a masterpiece will still look like a masterpiece no matter what the color, gender, size, or appearance of the wearer may be.

C’mon, it’s already 2018! We are already free to decide what we want to aesthetically change in our bodies in order to make us feel more comfortable living in it. So before proceeding in reading this feature, make sure that your mind is open to aesthetic procedures (invasive ones included) that aim to alter the natural course of aging.

Manila Millennial attended the launch of Menarini Group’s Relife, a new worldwide company that specializes in dermatology and aesthetic medicine. Menarini is from Italy’s largest bio-pharmaceutical company with more than 130 years of medical experience. They have developed a revolutionary new approach which brings life to the confidence movement.

Dr. Jaime Arzadon, Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, talks about his experience in using Happy Lift in patients outside the Philippines.

With its global headquarters in Florence, Italy (the cradle of the Renaissance), Relife draws on its dual scientific and artistic heritage to create beauty. Its science-based products and treatment protocols reflect its scientific heritage while the company’s concept of conscious innovation embodies its artistic heritage.

“Gone are the days when women are ashamed or afraid to try new products and even cosmetic procedures. Filipinas are very particular about how they look, and they want to be sure that they go for the best especially when it comes to their body,” says Menarini Group’s Medical Affairs Doctor, Dr. Grace Nilo. “Now that the Menarini Group has arrived in the Philippines, we’re here to provide revolutionary aesthetic medicine that will empower people to be the most beautiful and confident versions of themselves.”

They also offer healthcare practitioners (HCPs) a holistic approach to aesthetic medicine which gives a natural-looking and youthful appearance. This is achieved with a combination of unique products and treatment techniques developed in collaboration with leading HCPs/ specialists and the global scientific community. Their aesthetic range consist of two core products:

1. HAPPY LIFT SUSPENSION THREADS

Happy Lift is a patented line of absorbable, monofilament, suspension barbed threads designed to lift and hold soft and/or sagging facial tissues for a refreshed look and more defined facial contours. Happy Lift is made of unique materials poly-L-lactic acid and caprolactone. Unlike some conventional sutures which are smooth, Happy Lift threads have tiny barbs. Once inserted into the skin, these tiny barbs stimulate the fibroblasts to synthesize the extracellular matrix and collagen in the skin that act as scaffolding to lift and hold soft facial tissues in place, giving longer-lasting results than most other kinds of sutures. Short recovery time and a scarless operation has been assured by Menarini representatives.

Happy Lift is already available in both public and private hospitals in the Philippines at around P49,000, depending on the procedure done and the doctor’s fee. If the patient is qualified to be admitted in a public hospital like the Philippine General Hospital, they will only be required to pay for the fillers. This is set to offer at least 18 months of face lifting.

2. SKINFILL HYALURONIC ACID FILLERS

SKINFILL is developed based on the patented COESIX® Plus technology, an effective cross-linking technology that allows the filler to be optimally balanced between duration and moldability. SKINFILL is made of hyaluronic acid, which is naturally occurring in the human body and cross-linked with butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE) for increased stability. Together with collagen and elastin, hyaluronic acid is responsible for the skin’s youthful appearance. SKINFILL is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, restore lost volume, and reshape facial features without bruising and complications. This will reach the Philippine shores around mid-June and will only be available in select clinics and doctors that have been accredited.

Both procedures are recommended for ages 30-60 years old. Before undergoing these invasive treatments, doctors make sure to explain the process and prepare their patients since it may take a while for the bruising to heal and for the actual “finished product” to be evident.

SMILE TRAIN PARTNERSHIP

Kimmy Flaviano, Smile Train Philippines Country Director, explains how the partnership has helped kids with cleft palates on a global scale.

Relife not only passes on the smile to their patients, but also to kids who have untreated clefts. They have commissioned a series of seven paintings called the Masterpieces of Beauty by a rising star in the Asian art world – Monica Hapsari. At the end of each launch event in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, all the paintings from the Monica Hapsari’s series will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to Smile Train, a global alliance of charities working together to share beauty and happiness by giving children with cleft lip and cleft palate back their smiles and confidence.

All the paintings will incorporate Asian perceptions of beauty tastefully, combined with the Renaissance concepts of science and art. You can also help out! To find out more about Smile Train in the Philippines, visit www.smiletrain.ph/.
