This week, I have had several new clients asking us about hair loss and how to prevent it. I can remember a few stressful periods in my life when my hair was everywhere. You know… when it’s in your shower, in your brush, your pillow, all over the bathroom counter. So on those evenings when I couldn’t sleep. I dove into researching why my hair was falling out.
Nope, I wasn’t pregnant
Nope, I wasn’t on any medications
So for those of us who are just going about trying to do our best, day in and day out. Trying to keep up with work, family, kids, aging parents, grand kids, friends, coworkers, the house, eating healthy, fitting in exercise where we can. This is for you.
Vitamin B Complex – B-vitamins help carry oxygen and nutrients to your scalp, which aids in hair growth. Whole grains, meat, seafood and dark, leafy greens are all good sources of B-vitamins.
Vitamin C – Vitamin C is needed to make collagen and can help prevent hair from aging. Good sources include peppers, citrus fruits and strawberries.
Vitamin D – One form of hair loss is linked to deficiencies. You can increase vitamin D levels through sun exposure or by eating certain foods.
Iron – A major cause of hair loss, especially in women. This was a key finding for me. Have your ferritin levels checked. The best sources of iron include clams, oysters, eggs, red meat, spinach and lentils.
Zinc – Can improve hair growth in people who are deficient in it. Good sources include oysters, beef and pumpkin seeds.
My research also brought me to new findings on “cones,” including silicone, dimethicone, and more. We’ll talk more on that in my next blog post. For now you can read up on previous blog posts:
We had to go really deep to get to the bottom of which “cones” were safe for use and which ones were not.
Here is the scoop, many of us who used products with silicone to smooth our hair along with sulfate free shampoos caused a build up that suffocated the hair shaft and we experienced hair loss. It wasn’t anyone’s fault. Just a perfect storm in which we thought we were being good to our hair, that caused the hair loss.
To combat this, I recommend two things.
Scalp massage using the inversion method with a product from Neuma called ReNeu Scalp Therapy.
Plus a weekly detox with a color safe shampoo from Colorproof called ClearItUp.
(You can get both of these at Make Me Fab of course, plus we always ship for free)
reNeu Scalp Therapy features a proprietary blend of plant extracts and essential oils to maximize color hue, vibrancy and longevity while an exclusive blend of plant nutrients protect color from UVA & UVB oxidation. Can be used weekly, or as needed, to help maintain and promote healthy scalp and hair. Aroma provided by pure essential oils of Corn Mint, Vanilla & Peppermint. main
To do the method properly, you can research it more on YouTube. Flip your head over and massage the scalp for 4 minutes 7 days in a row each month. That’s it! This product is a clean product and we also recommend it once a week in the shower. You can use this alone or mix with any shampoo. It is also color safe. We love Neuma products because, they use ZERO synthetic fragrance, phthalates, isothiazolinones, sulfates, sodium chloride, parabens, bromides, 1,4-dioxane, glutens, soy, neurotoxins, aluminum compounds, glycols*, formaldehyde donors, ureas, methylisothiazolinone, FD&C Colorant**, carcinogens or environmental pollutants***.
Also use a clarifying shampoo once a week. We like Colorproof Detox ClearItUp shampoo .
ClearItUp is a super-charged clarifier for color-treated hair. Gently cleanses and deodorizes while removing build up. Leaves hair amazingly clean, soft, and weightless. It detoxifies, clarifies, and removes build-up, extremely gentle and non-stripping, unlike other clarifiers, Revives hair leaving it clean, deodorized, soft, and touchable, provides unsurpassed color and heat protection.

We have been in deep discussions with all of our product distributors about our quest to become fully non toxic, and have also applied for our new logo trademark. Let’s talk this week a little more about the chemicals we are eliminating from our product lineup.
DEA or diethanolamine, MEA or Monoethanolamine and TEA or triethanolamine are added to shampoos to provide lather and as a “wetting agent” in lotions. But did you know they can also be found in brake fluid, degreasers and antifreeze? Not something you want to put on your skin everyday, right? In some studies these compounds have been shown to inhibit fetal brain development. There is also a strong link to liver and kidney cancer. But they more commonly cause skin reactions and endocrine disruption.
Phthalates are commonly found in deodorant, nail polish and lip balm. They were also found in many childrens’ care products. Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) was used as a plasticizer in nail polish, which keeps the polish from cracking and becoming brittle. Dimethyphthalate (DMP) was used in hair sprays so that they would form a flexible film on the hair. Diethylphthalates (DEP) is used as a solvent and fixative in fragrance. In women this chemical can cause endometriosis and premature deliveries. In males they decrease testosterone production and decrease their fertility.
We are going non-toxic and shortening our name to show our commitment to our new philosophy and purpose.
Cosmetics and hair care products are used daily by you and everyone in your household. In the United States less than 20% of the cosmetics sold have been tested for safety. In 2009 the European Union, the group that is responsible for ensuring the safety of the cosmetics sold in Europe banned 1328 chemicals found in cosmetics. The United States has only banned 30 since 2018. At Make Me Fabulous, we care about what you and our staff are exposed to on a daily basis and have started to move to a non-toxic salon. You will notice that we will be eliminating some product lines and bringing in new ones that are EU certified, including Alayne Curtiss Bridal Beauty. As we are transitioning, we also hope you will stop back here as we educate you on our findings and our journey to eliminate toxic ingredients from all the products we carry. We may not be perfect yet, but we plan to be as non- toxic as possible and still bring fabulous lasting results in all the services we provide.
Let’s start the discussion and talk about some of the chemicals we are eliminating and why:
Carcinogens cause cancer, disrupt your endocrine system which is responsible for producing hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things. Women who wear makeup regularly absorb about five pounds of makeup chemicals every year. Skin is your largest organ.
Parabens are used to stop microbial growth in everything from shampoo, conditioner, perfume, toothpaste, soaps and other hygiene products. Parabens that have been banned by the EU include isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben, phenyl paraben and benzylparaben. These have been found to be estrogenic, meaning they can compete with estrogen in a woman’s body and affecting hormonal balance. This can lead to breast cancer in women and interfere with reproductive function in men. Methylparaben has been found to be safe by the EU and is still used to keep bacteria from growing in your products.

We’ve put together the top 8 ways to get a great cut, color and at home results for your hair! The more detailed the consultation is, the happier you will likely be at the end of the service!
Here are a our tips for helping your stylist understand just what you want!
Be on time. To get the most out of your session with your stylist. Being late even 5-10 minutes it the time allotted for the consultation portion of your appointment.
Be honest and don’t be afraid to hurt our feelings. We want you to be happy!
When you’re styling your hair at home, what do you struggle with most frizz, flatness, styling, product selection, color fading, time? Let your stylist know any challenges you have with it at home, there could be a solution (Graduations, removal of weight, layering, a different color formula, etc.)
Are you someone that washes and goes or do you have a styling regimen? This is important information for your stylist so that when you style it at home, the cut or color works with your lifestyle.
Bring photos! Be specific as to what part of the cut or color in the photo you like the best. Sometimes it’s good to bring multiple photos, to make your inspiration more clear. You may like the bangs in one photo and the layers in another, the options are endless!
Realistically, how much time do you have for at home styling, maintenance, time between appointments, time spent at the salon during your appointment. That perfectly balayaged platinum wavy styled hair you see in photos may have taken 5 hours in the salon and 1.5 hours styling each day, plus a moisturizing mask once a week. Do you realistically have that kind of time daily, weekly, monthly?
Ask your stylist about at home care. The truth is more often than not you’re styling your own hair more than we are, so your at home care plays an important role. Have her show you what she used to get that great finished result in the salon, Figure out what your budget is for this appointment. Then have you and your stylist keep track of what you plan on adding to your at home care line up next time.
Lastly, if in between your scheduled appointments you have questions about your hair, call your stylist. Also feel free to let us know how things are going for you! We are here to help, and genuinely care about your relationship with your hair!
1. It is Relaxing – When the body is tense and under stress, it produces unhealthy levels of the well-known stress hormone, cortisol, which can contribute to weight gain, sleeplessness, digestive problems and headaches. Massage enables the body to enter a recovery mode. More importantly, this form of therapy also triggers lasting feelings of relaxation, improved mood, and reduced stress levels. Not only can massage therapy help with stress relief, but regular massage sessions over a prolonged period of time can boost energy levels, reduce pain, and stimulate individuals on physical as well as emotional levels.
2. It Can Help Lower Blood Pressure – Regular massage therapy sessions have been found to reduce blood pressure levels. In fact, some long-term studies have shown that a consistent massage program can reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Consistent massage sessions can also reduce trigger sources for anxiety, hostility, tension, and depression.
3. It Promotes Muscle Relaxation – The purpose of massage therapy is to target the source of the body’s pain via eliminating tension, increasing flexibility, and providing relaxation to the affected muscles as well as the body as a whole. Massage also promotes circulation to the affected or injured muscles, which increases nutrients and oxygen to the damaged tissues. In turn, this increased activity to the affected sites reduces stiffness and edema in the muscles and joints, as well as increases flexibility to help reduce pain. Massage also releases endorphins (pain-killing hormones), which boost dopamine and serotonin levels in the body. These hormones assist the body in many ways by promoting healing, pain management, and feelings of euphoria, as well as help to calm the nerves.
4. It Can Help Improve Circulation – The long-term benefits of massage therapy are not to be underestimated. Improved circulation is part of a snowball effect that occurs in the body as a result of receiving regular massage therapy on a consistent basis. This is because proper circulation brings damaged, stiff, and tense muscles the rich blood supply they need to promote healing. Massage also promotes improved circulation via the use of hands-on pressure, which moves the blood through the damaged and congested areas of the body. In turn, the release of this same pressure causes new blood to flow into tissues. The squeezing, twisting and pulling action of the massage technique also removes lactic acid from the muscle tissues resulting in improved lymph circulation, which carries metabolic waste products away from internal organs and muscles in turn lowering blood pressure levels and improved overall body function.
5. It Can Help Strengthen the Body’s Immune System – It is a well-known fact that individuals who experience high levels of stress are more vulnerable to illness and injury. Studies have indicated that regular massage sessions not only help reduce stress, but can also boost the immune system’s cytotoxic capacity (activity level of the body’s natural “killer cells”) and enhances the body’s ability to deliver nourishment. Regular massage can help keep the immune system strong and resilient.
