Valid

We all know that there are 4 macro nutrients; carbohydrates, proteins and fat. But there are also micronutrients which consist of several trace minerals that the body requires in minute amounts. Deficiency of any such trace mineral can lead to innumerable health problems. Lets learn about one such trace mineral, what health issues they can potentially cause and how can we replenish it in out body.

Magnesium
Magnesium controls and is required for over 300 different biochemical reactions and functions in the human body. In fact the human body has over 3,500 magnesium binding sites. Binding sites in the body show how much of magnesium is required in the human body in different areas. They are present in the brain, in your body, into your central nervous system, into your organs like kidney and the heart, into your cells, into the nucleus of your cells. This shows how important Magnesium is. Today we have diets deficient in magnesium and just adding magnesium rich foods or supplements to our diet is not enough.

In holistic alternative medicine we aim at the following points

1.) Why are you deficient in magnesium?

2.) What are those lifestyles or medicines that are depleting your body of magnesium?

Magnesium plays an important role in ailments related to hormonal issues like PCOS, the inability to conceive, struggle through menopause, falling hair, quality of skin, the inability to lose weight or the reason why you’re putting on so much of weight, cardiovascular problems, heart attacks, repair of your cells, diabetes, immunity and many more.

Depletion & Replenishment
Let’s understand why we are depleting magnesium. I see cramps in marathon runners every single year. They get these cramps in their calf muscles and in their stomach and it’s not only because of lack of training. It’s because of a simple deficiency of magnesium and eighty percent of the runners who come to me for consulting and training throughout the year, we just correct their magnesium deficiency and the cramps disappear. The over consumption of sugar, phosphates, synthetic calcium, vitamin d3, coffee, alcohol, aerated makes us deficient in magnesium. When you have a diet that’s rich in junk food or your kids are eating too much of junk food, the saturated and Trans fats in junk food does not allow absorption of magnesium in your intestines. Sugar basically accelerates excretion of magnesium from your kidneys. So the more sugar you have your kidneys actually start excreting more magnesium. Phosphates are found in almost all aerated drinks. They basically bind with magnesium making it unsuitable and unusable by the body and then it’s excreted out of the system. Then of course there’s a direct correlation between cortisol which is your stress hormone. When you have elevated levels of cortisol, it depletes magnesium from your body. So again it’s your lifestyle that is making you deficient in magnesium.

Calcium
Today people just supplement calcium because the doctor say calcium is good for you, Calcium prevents osteoporosis you need for your bones. India and the US are the highest consumers of calcium and vitamin d3 supplements. And India and the US have the highest amount of cases when it comes to osteoporosis and poor bone health. There is no direct correlation between calcium and osteoporosis. We need calcium for good bone health but we need the right quality of calcium and we need the right amount of d3 and magnesium to absorb calcium from the foods that you eat. So just taking more and more calcium actually depletes you of magnesium because calcium requires magnesium for absorption. We actually look at getting calcium naturally from food sources like sesame or til seeds, green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains. If you have a balanced diet you get sufficient calcium. We do supplement with calcium when you’re going through pregnancy or you’re starting menopause at certain stages in your life if you’re deficient in calcium but it’s a myth thinking that you need more calcium in order to prevent osteoporosis and bone diseases

Why Magnesium
In India if a patient has oedema or water retention he is advised to take elastics. It’s required for some time but if you take elastics without replenishing magnesium your kidneys are basically flushing out all your magnesium from the body and then you have more issues because of the magnesium deficiency.

If you need to take a diuretic, you should also be supplementing with magnesium or eating foods which are rich in magnesium.

If you’re on a pill or an oral contraceptive, high oestrogen levels deplete magnesium from your system. Be sure that you take the right amount of magnesium in your diet.

Most anti-cancer drugs, chemo, radiation, surgeries, burns, liver diseases, hormonal disorders deplete you of magnesium. So if you’re going through any of these treatments it is absolutely critical to replenish magnesium. Every patient of mine who goes through either surgery, radiation or chemo or heavy drug prescriptions have to be on magnesium because if they’re not a magnesium, even the best diet plan in the world is not going to work and then your medicine is going to create side effects and the patient is going to suffer from the collateral damage of the primary medication taken.

Magnesium also plays an important role in protein synthesis. if you don’t have the right amount of magnesium, the amino acids that actually contributes towards the building of lean mass and muscles it doesn’t get transported. Magnesium acts as a transporter for amino acids to your muscles. All these protein powders have a high protein diet but being deficient in magnesium actually causes more harm in your body right from nerve function. So sometimes that constant fatigue or brain fog that you feel in your head could be a magnesium deficiency. You suffer from migraines or headaches. So make sure you don’t have a magnesium deficiency.

Your central nervous system requires magnesium for all of its functions, so if you have a deficiency of magnesium you are impacting the efficiency of your central nervous system. So all those constant pains that you have and you keep taking a painkiller which basically depletes you of magnesium can be fixed or possibly made better by looking at your magnesium intake in your diet. The deficiency of magnesium also causes issues with your blood pressure.

Magnesium plays a role in energy metabolism. Everything is about energy. You could be eating carbohydrates, proteins and fats but if you don’t have the right micronutrients in your system to metabolise or break down those carbs, proteins and fats, the energy is useless.

You need magnesium in the right amounts to produce the antioxidant glutathione. Glutathione is required for cellular health. Right from DNA repair, cell division, cell repair and cell growth everything that someone going through cancer is looking for because we all know cancer and most diseases originate from a cell which makes cellular health the most important part of healing, recovery and prevention.

Magnesium is needed for enzymatic functions. Everything in your body requires an enzyme to break it down right from your saliva, right from digestion in your stomach right from assimilation of the food that you eat into nutrients and making it absorbed into your cells and reaching your cells require enzymes and the production of enzymes, the health of enzymes and the generation of enzymes require magnesium. So sometimes you have indigestion problems and you do everything to fix it but all you need to do sometimes make sure that your body has the right micronutrient or a trace mineral which is magnesium in order to produce the right amount of digestive enzymes which if your body has you don’t have indigestion. This one trace mineral could be possible solution to multiple ailments that you may be facing in your body, right now.

Sources of Magnesium
The foods rich in magnesium are spinach, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, entire green leafy vegetables, avocado and bananas. Most doctors tell diabetic patients not to eat banana. But banana contains magnesium and magnesium is required in the healing of diabetes. Most diabetic patients are deficient in magnesium. You need magnesium if you have osteoporosis, cardiovascular issues, triglycerides, cholesterol issues, type1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, cancer, liver problem. You need magnesium for every single function in the human body. So when we cut out good foods like fruits and bananas thinking that my levels look better on paper you are not healing, you are only suppressing your symptom and you will suffer from the side effects of suppressing your symptom. Dark chocolate contains high amounts of magnesium. Black beans, yogurt, caffeine, contains magnesium.

So if you have the right amount of calcium, magnesium and d3 you ensure a hundred percent bioavailability. Make sure that you are getting these little sources of magnesium rich food every single day and listen to bio feedback from your body. Supplement it with the right food, the right supplement and then you help your body get the nutrition it needs to keep you healthy.

There are a lot of myths around fermented foods like dosas, idlis, dhoklas on whether they are good or bad for you. A lot of people complain of bloating and flatulence, indigestion and acidity post eating fermented foods. I know south Indians whose staple diet used to be fermented foods or comprised mainly of fermented foods moving away from that diet and adopting something which is not even staple to their geography and their region where they live. That’s because there are a lot of myths that come along with these foods.

Fermented is Healthy
The dosa, the idli, the dhoklas, fermented foods are extremely healthy for you. If you suffer from indigestion, acidity, bloating and flatulence you can’t blame your food or your staple diet, you blame your weak digestive system and you work on strengthening your digestive system you don’t strengthen a system by taking away those foods and not making lifestyle changes. In grains and beans, phytic acid is what produces most of the bloating and the indigestion. During the fermentation process phytic acid gets broken down and that’s why you’re able to digest the food much easier without any gas or acidity. It’s a good idea to ferment and break down the phytic acid as well because phytic acid blocks the absorption of minerals from the food that you eat into your body into your blood. So basically when you have fermented food phytic acid is broken down which actually allows for the bioavailability of vitamins and minerals and the absorption of minerals and vitamins into your blood and then on onwards to your billions of cells that your made-up of.

Fermentation also produces lactobacilli which produces an array of vitamins especially of B vitamins, including the synthesis of vitamin b12, something that most people have a deficiency of . So right from vitamin B like folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, thymidine, even vitamin K, vitamin b12 and certain antibiotic and anti-carcinogenic properties all this is produced by lactobacilli which happens during the fermentation process or when you eat fermented food.

Easy to Digest & Gut Health
Fermented food is already pre-digested by bacteria which means once it gets into your system it’s actually easy for you to digest it because it’s pre-digested. During the fermentation process there is a production of enzymes and lactic acid which actually helps with the breakdown and absorption of protein and amino acids.
Fermented food also protects the life of the food for a longer period of time and it also helps you develop your healthy gut bacteria in your intestines. Almost everyone has an incorrect ratio of good and bad bacteria which is why we have indigestion, bloating, acidity, flatulence, IBS, leaky gut syndrome, malnourishment because most of the minerals and vitamins from the food that we eat don’t get absorbed in our body. When you have the correct and the right ratio of good bacteria and bad bacteria you have proper assimilation of food, proper digestion, good bowel movement, good colon health and you get all of that again from fermented food.

How to Cook Fermented Food
Removing fermented foods from your diet thinking that it’s going to make you healthier is a mistake most of you make. There’s a healthy way to cook these fermented foods. Choosing the oils, choosing the quantity of oil, the amount of salt and of course how much you eat. If you’re eating six to eight to ten idlis at one time that’s a little too much for anyone; it’s bad for your GI levels and over consumption of anything that’s even good for you is a problem to the human body because the human body only uses what it needs for its energy and its bodily functions.
What goes into a dosa; for example there are black lentils also known as urad dal and rice and that’s ground with a little bit of fenugreek. Now just look at the beauty in the combination of these ingredients; rice and lentils together make a complete protein food, it has all 22 essential amino acids but yet most will label it as a carb and say that it is bad for me, I’m going to put on weight but it’s an essential amino acid. You have all the essential amino acids making it a complete protein that the body uses to actually help you build lean mass or lose body fat. The fenugreek has a warming impact on food, it also helps you digest better, it helps you break down phytic acid better and it helps with your blood sugar balance, which is the beauty of the combination of these ingredients in making a dosa. Idli again is fermented, dhoklas fermented, it has tremendous health value and it comes to your health and your nutrition.

So do not stray away from your staple foods. There is a good way to have it and a bad way.  When you have all the roadside fermented foods which are covered with butter and oil and oil which is usually reused over and over again, those are the things that cause you to lose your health, those are the things that cause you to put on weight. You do your homemade dosa or your idlis or dhoklas or any fermented food. Stick to that. The problem is never with your staple foods. It is with your lifestyle so enjoy all of the fermented foods.

Carrot is one of the most nutritious vegetable available on this planet. We use carrot or carrot juice in the treatment of almost every disease ranging from cancer to even obesity. Carrots are rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene. It is one of the simplest juices to make.

Simple Carrot Juice
When you juice it you make it a little easier to digest in the human body. So how do you make a simple carrot juice? You select fresh carrots you may peel them if they’re organic you can use the peel, you juice them with a little bit of freshly cracked black pepper and maybe even a whole tablespoon of coconut oil or a really good extra virgin olive oil, because you see the vitamins in carrots are fat-soluble which means they require fat to be digested and carried to all the cells of the human body. Sometimes for breakfast you can start off your day with a carrot juice.

Liver Health & Constipation
Now the nutrition from a carrot juice has the ability to reach your liver and even repair and regenerate liver enzymes, which is why it’s one of the most used juices in cases of liver cancer or liver cirrhosis or any liver condition. Almost all of us have toxic livers today because of lifestyle pollution contamination and food and water and depleted minerals and vitamins and the food that we eat. So keeping our livers healthy is of prime importance because the cleaner your liver the fewer toxins you have the less toxins you have the more ability liver has to do its function of burning fat. Sometimes when you’re struggling to lose weight the only thing you need to do is clean your liver so that your liver can perform its function of fat burn. The liver has over 500 different functions in the body so keep your liver clean. Over and above that, carrot juice that you have is rich in fibre which will also take care of even the most severe cases of constipation.

Benefits for Skin & Hair
You want that glowing skin and that glowing hair, I mean that strong hair and tight skin. Carrot juice again! You can build up on this base juice that I’ve given you. You can add beetroot to it, you can add carrot to it, you can add your chia seeds or flax seeds to it, you can add a tablespoon of organic raw honey to it as well.

So make it a habit to add carrot juice to your diet every single day. I do it at morning sometimes, I do it at night as well it fills you up, it’s refreshing and it’s one of the most nutritious drinks that you could ever make for yourself.

Protein as a subject as been discussed over the last ten years and its become a billion dollar industry. There are so many myths around protein. Its not only prevents us from reaching our health goals but it also causes more disease and health related problems. Today I want to discuss about this protein.

How does protein work in the human body?
The human body breaks down the protein in your food into amino acids which then generates the right amount of protein needed for your muscles and your cells. The common misconception is that you take a scoop of whey protein and eat a high protein meal and that protein goes directly into the muscles. It doesn’t work that way.  Your body first breaks down protein into amino acids. It’s the amino acids that contribute towards proper lean mass that gives muscle fuel and gives power to your cells. There are 23 amino acids. 15 of them your body can make every single day. The balance 8 amino acids also called essential amino acids must come from other sources like beans, green peas, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumber, carrot, kale, spinach, nuts, seeds, sprouts.

To Meat or not to Meat
Vegetarian foods contain the 8 amino acids your body needs to make complete quality protein. Eggs, red meat too have fantastic protein in along with fats and other hormones but you can get complete amino acid profiles from vegetarian foods. You will find Olympians, vegan body builders, pure vegetarians who run marathons and triathlons eating vegetarian protein. You can get sufficient protein even if you are a Jain or all your food is plant based or even if you do not have a dairy.

How much Protein?
We have been confused by the media and many people over the years about the quantity of protein one must consume. Excess protein comes with its own problems because it not quantity. Its quality. I could get 30gms of protein in a scoop of whey protein which is not qualitative and does not have a complete amino acid profile. I could get just 7 to 8 grams of protein in two to three tablespoons of pumpkin seeds that has all the amino acids and will give my body what it exactly needs. So its not about quantity. Its about quality. The human body can absorb 9 to 12 grams of proteins at each sitting. So taking 30grams of protein per meal is too much protein for some people. Body cannot absorb that much of protein. Excess proteins get stored as glucose which gets converted to fats. Hence people who keep taking excess protein for better muscle build end up getting abdominal fat because excess protein does not get absorbed at one time.

Bodybuilders & Protein
When it comes to muscle building you need a little bit of protein but more of the Human Growth Hormone and hormone called Testosterone and that’s what we never look at. We just calculate how much protein we can get. But if you have low growth hormone levels and low testosterone levels in your body, it doesn’t matter how much protein you have. In fact excess protein causes a reduction in the serum testosterone. Testosterone is what builds muscle mass and lean mass both in men and women. Women also have testosterone and human growth hormone in their bodies. Every time you generate more human growth hormone you have more muscle mass and lean mass. Consuming processed foods, sugar, alcohol, smoking, sitting in active for a long time depletes the human growth hormone. What stimulates the human growth hormone is an active lifestyle like skipping, jumping and basically any activity that has your contact of foot to the ground multiple times. This in turn stimulates immunity. High human growth hormone means high testosterone. Right hormonal balance is needed because hormonal imbalance does not break the protein the right way. As a result you cannot build muscle nor have a lean body. So the idea is balance your hormones by taking a balanced nutrition. One needs to eat the right kind of fats to generate right hormones in human body. So when you get right source of fats from the right olive oil or the right coconut oil, nuts, seeds they all have essential fatty acid, you help body generate hormones like testosterone and human growth hormone. Excess protein is stored as fat and you will put more pressure on your kidneys to flush out the excess protein.

Vitamins & Proteins
If you are consuming a protein rich diet and you are not putting on muscle and you are not losing weight, it is also because of a vitamin deficiency. Because one of the main functions of many vitamins is to convert the protein we eat into amino acids that our body can absorb. So if you have a vitamin deficiency your body is not synthesizing protein the right way. A balanced diet will give anyone the right amount of protein the body needs. So instead of adding more protein to our diet we need to look at why isn’t our body breaking protein the right way and why isn’t it absorbing the right way. A handful of nuts, a tablespoon of sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, a bowl of peas, raw fruits, vegetables and seeds all this is good protein.

Small Frequent Meals
People eat every two hours thinking that the metabolic rate may increase which is wrong. Proteins take roughly three and a half to four hours to digest in our system. If you eating every two hours, you making your digestive system work constantly. Digestive system uses most amount of energy in your body. And if it is constantly using this energy to breakdown the amount of food you eat, your metabolic rate is actually slower, because metabolism is a function of energy. Also if you eat every two hours, this makes stomach produce stomach acid every two hours which means at some point you have more acid in your system. And when you are acidic, you are destroying amino acids, you cannot lose weight, you cannot build muscle. Eating every two hours is a myth. It will not boost your metabolism. Your body is not looking out for nutrition so frequently. Give body what it needs during its meal times and in between let it rest in between. Let it digest and absorb nutrition. Let it build cell health and immunity. Let it build your muscles. That’s exactly how human body works.

Being healthy is easy. It’s just become too complicated today. Proteins are building blocks of cells, muscle, immunity and everything else. You can build that lean mass by looking after your hormonal health. Testosterone and Human Growth Hormone is that all you need when it comes to proteins, everything else is available in nature.

At this very moment tens and thousands of studies around obesity and weight loss happen in labs across the world searching for that one weight loss pill or that one treatment or that one product that one food that can help millions of people all over the world loses weight, the most sought-after goal weight loss. When you want to study obesity you need to study a fat mouse and you’ve got to make a mouse fat because mice aren’t fat so the quickest way to make a mouse fat is injecting them with this one ingredient which is found in almost eighty percent of processed foods around the world which is found in almost seventy-five percent of most restaurant food, MSG or Monosodium Glutamate.

Brain Cell Damage
In the 1960s the phrase called Chinese restaurant syndrome was coined by the New England journal of medicine and this was to categorize a group of people or many people who would eat Chinese food and within 20 minutes of eating Chinese food they would feel tingling sensations, immense hunger, brain fog, chest pain and pressure. A few years later the pharmaceutical industry mentioned that msg killed brain cells and in 1970 it was even proven that commercially used msg kills brain cells and causes a host of problems right from infants to teenagers to middle-aged people and elderly people. Monosodium glutamate fires up your nervous system, neurons, it creates neurotoxicity in the body which is detrimental to your brain health. A lot of us who consume msg right now may feel the consequences 15 to 20 years later in life and we’re seeing it sprout up all over the world right from Alzheimer’s to dementia to Parkinson’s. These are brain cells that are dying because of ingredients like msg.

Stress on Liver
Glutamate is an amino acid and the body needs amino acids. When you and I consume protein it gets broken down into amino acids by the liver without a problem. The liver can efficiently breakdown amino acids but glutamate is an amino acid and monosodium is an addition of one molecule of sodium to this amino acid glutamate. So it becomes monosodium glutamate a very unstable amino acid which puts a lot of oxidative stress on your liver to break it down and in most cases your body is unable to flush msg out of your system.

Effects on Insulin & Diabetes
Msg excites the brain and tricks the brain into making us hungrier. If you’ve ever had a Chinese meal you notice an hour two hours later you still feel hungrier and you want to eat more and more and so msg is commercially added to most foods and processed foods to make you feel hungry to make you eat more. Msg has a direct impact on your pancreas. They force your pancreas to produce more insulin and when your body produces more insulin two things happen; you feel hungrier and you start taking away the life of pancreas and insulin insensitivity is one of the biggest problems that people all around the world face. Diabetes; diabetes type 2 diabetes type 1 are caused by msg.

ADD & Hormonal Imbalance
In children, giving children processed foods msg can create attention deficient disorders in children and you look around today one of the most common problems that parents have children are hyperactive children. You can blame it on sugar. But the actual cause is msg. If it excites the brain of an adult, imagine what it does to the brain of a child and msg is made to be addictive. The brain mapping of MSG is similar to the brain mapping of heroin and cocaine. So msg wreaks havoc with our hormones as well, creating a hormonal imbalance then you have PCOD, you have ovarian issues, you have testosterone issues, you have low libido in men and women.

Hidden MSG
It’s incredible and eighty percent of the foods around the world even your favourite restaurant they will tell you there is no msg because they don’t know that there’s something called hidden msg. Vegetable protein, hydrolysed vegetable, textured vegetable protein, vegetable gum, yeast extract is nothing but msg. That’s why we have so many issues in regards to our health, our brain, fatigue.

Fatigue
Fatigue is a problem that plagues everyone and we think it’s less sleep, we think we should eat more food. Msg rob’s your cells of energy, its sodium. Every extra gram of sodium in your body requires 23 grams of water to neutralize it. Where does it get water from? It robs it from your surrounding cells; even a one-percent drop of water in your cells creates fatigue, dehydration and immense problems in the human body.

The solution is eat less processed foods and eat more home cook foods and if you really want to eat out and restaurants try to avoid anything that has msg or Chinese food because you have to understand that food can be made very tasty with only the addition of msg because msg changes the way our taste buds taste food. Always read the labels of every process food if you buy and be very careful about the kinds of restaurants that you choose because msg makes the food taste better. Msg makes you want to eat more and that’s money that’s business to everyone.

Immunity is the first and last line of defence in the human body. No matter what medication you take or what medication you need to be on, we can never forget that human body is built with an intelligent and brilliant system called immunity and that is the system which will protect you, will prevent and will help heal diseases.

Virals
We first need to understand why we are having so many kinds of virals. Virals are no longer the same. Today people are experiencing virals in many different ways. Their recovery time has become so much more that people have to resort to medication to heal from a viral. A few years ago or even months ago people could just take some rest, have hot liquids, change their diet a little bit and they would recover over time with virals. But today people have virals accompanied by so much of body pain, knee pain, joint pain, back pain, pain in their ribs and they take even a month to recover after taking antibiotics and heavy medication. As you can see the problem of antibiotic resistance is becoming more dangerous and the whole superbug syndrome is plaguing the entire planet.

Star Anise
Now if you are a fan of Thai food and you eat a Thai curry which is made the authentic way you’ll see a little spice which is shaped like a flower. It’s called a star anise and in Hindi it’s called a chakra fool. You may have heard of the common drug called Tamiflu which is used for colds, coughs, virals, influenza and it is also used in the treatment of swine flu. It contains one particular very powerful ingredient called Shikimic acid and pharmaceuticals get the Shikimic acid from the star anise spice. So technically if we start including the star anise in our diet in the right way it boosts our immunity almost immediately. It’s one of the richest sources when it comes to spices and vitamin A, vitamin C and the B vitamins which are all the vitamins which contribute to great immunity when it comes to prevention and healing. We also need to understand that vitamin C and antioxidants that the star anise contains helps you with the repair and recovery of your body.

Antioxidant
When we eat toxic food and when we breathe toxic air and have the wrong oils in our diet we produce something called free radicals. When we have too many free radicals in our body and less antioxidants these free radicals create inflammation which is the root cause of heart disease and most cancers as well because cancer is an inflammatory disease. So we need to eat foods which are rich in antioxidants.

Anti fungal
The next important benefit of star anise is its antifungal property. We all have candida in us but the moment our immunity drops the candida overgrowth happens. This is a bacteria that exists in all of us but the moment immunity drops you have a candida overgrowth and that’s one of the main reasons that contributes to the inability of women to lose weight or to bloating, flatulence and acidity. Now star anise is antifungal and has the ability to break down excessive Candida growth in the human body which makes it extremely important for men and women to include the spice in their diet.

Anti-Inflammatory
Star anise contains an ingredient called thymol which is highly anti-inflammatory. So when it comes to joint pain and rheumatoid arthritis we need to have an anti-inflammatory diet that reduces inflammation and reduces our pain.

Other Benefits
Digesting star anise is extremely calming on the digestive system. It reduces acidity, indigestion, flatulence and bloating. Also because of its high estrogenic properties star anise is great for women who are hitting menopause and are going through menopause because in menopause your oestrogen goes down and your progesterone goes up. So eating foods rich in healthy and the right oestrogen which come from wholesome foods will actually take away many of the side effects and symptoms that menopausal women go through.

 Magic Tea Recipe
If your child has a cough and cold or if you have a cough and cold, make the simple tea that I shall explain to ease the cough and cold. Star anise is antiviral, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory.

– To prepare this tea you take hot water and boil it.

– Add two star anise’s in a medium-sized mug about 250 ml mug and add the hot water to the star anise’s in the mug and then you cover it.

– Let it seep for about 15 minutes and then you drink that.

There are many liquids like jeera water, ajwain water and lemon water that you can also drink. So the simple thing that you can do is when you make your jeera and ajwain water and it’s all boiled you can add that to a mug which has one or two star anise in it. So now you have your jeera, ajwain and you have the health benefits of star anise. This is how you enhance your health by constantly adding, building and improving the variety of nature into your diet. It is extremely important that you use the Chinese star anise or the star anise that grows in India and not the Japanese one.

So use star anise for prevention and cure. It is extremely important that women who have an ER positive cancer or ovarian cancer or anything to do with high oestrogen where oestrogen should be minimized in your body this is not for you. But for everyone else do it in moderation. Add it to your system. You can’t go wrong with nature. You can’t go wrong when you have the right immunity. Children can have these as well in small quantities. So they can have a tablespoon or two of the star anise water. It is extremely great for their gas and colic if they’re going through it. Make sure you get seven or eight hours or even six hours of good deep quality sleep because sleep is the most important ingredient when it comes to building immunity.

When it comes to rice there is white and there is brown and there’s this whole debate about which is healthier for you which is better for weight loss. There isn’t a problem with white rice. A lot of people think that diabetes is related to white rice, weight gain is related to white rice.

Phytic Acid in Brown Rice

Brown rice has the bran and fibre and it’s got nutrients as well like manganese, vitamins, minerals like phosphorus and iron. But let us also understand that brown rice has the bran which also contains phytates. Now phytic acid or phytates blocks mineral absorption in the human body. So the brown rice that you are eating is rich in phytic acid which can actually prevent the absorption of nutrients from the food you eat into your cells. The nutrition found in brown rice; is it really worth it if most of the other minerals from the food that you eat will not be absorbed into the human body.

Arsenic Poisoning in Brown Rice
Over the last few years there have been loads of traces of arsenic which is a heavy metal found in brown rice and it holds onto the bran of brown rice and it can be very toxic to the human body. So for many patients who have extreme cases of cancer they are advised not to actually eat brown rice but to move to white rice. Although if it’s organic brown rice or ethically grown brown rice which is devoid of arsenic then brown rice is definitely a good choice for them as well. Today soils are contaminated and your rice grows out of contaminated soils which are rich in heavy metals so it may be good to actually have white rice because the little nutrition that you find in brown rice cannot outweigh the arsenic which is a heavy metal which is toxic to your liver and the human body.

White Rice Tradition
If you look at Asian countries like China, Japan, Philippines and Thailand, white rice is consumed every single day and in some of these countries at every single meal; breakfast, lunch and dinner. These countries also have the lowest rate of diabetes because there is no connection with diabetes and white rice. But white rice when mixed with vegetables or lentils like in India white rice is served with lentils and vegetables it’s a great combination, there’s fibre and it’s a perfect carbohydrate. When you wash off the starch it actually makes it a light carbohydrate. Again you go back to traditional Indian wisdom, rice was always polished. Even the rice found in South India, its part boiled and slightly polish so it retains some of the white and some of the red.

Don’t Overeat White Rice
The thing is people struggling with weight tend to over eat rice. They tend to have more than their bodies require and they eat it at the wrong time like one hour before bed at night. Your dinner isn’t supposed to be the heaviest meal of the day and if you’re going to have that plate full of rice you’re definitely going to have weight problems. You don’t eat white rice and get diabetes you have metabolic syndrome, your poor lifestyle habit is what brings on diabetes and then over consumption of white rice will make your sugar levels go up and will make you eat more and you will have insulin issues.

Diversify Grain Choice
Also don’t get stuck with rice alone. There are other grains which are available which are extremely healthy like millets which are completely alkaline grains with a lot of fibre, protein, iron, phosphorus and other trace minerals. So explore different grains and make sure that you have about a variety of different grains in your diet because grains are required for you. Carbohydrates which are good are required for the human body.

So that’s how you decide between white rice and brown rice. So please don’t think that the white rice you’re eating is the reason that you’re not losing weight. We don’t lose weight because we have unbalanced nutrition and diet, inadequate and wrong kind of exercise, wrong amount of sleep, wrong quality of sleep and stress. We need to emotionally detoxify all the time. You get all of these working together and you have weight-loss. Don’t blame it on the white rice.

There are a number of benefits of Raw Potato Juice. I advise you to try it. It’s really simple to prepare. We peel off the potato skin because it holds a lot of pesticides and dirt and then cut the potatoes and juice it with water. It’s as simple as that. You may not like the taste. You can mix it with carrot juice, beetroot juice, some people add a little bit of ginger, some people add honey to the potato juice, I like it plain, it tastes like the potato, and it’s great. I usually add it to my morning vegetable juice and I’ve gotten into a habit of having about 200ml potato juice at night as well. Try adding that to your lifestyle. These are the benefits of raw potato juice

Anti-Inflammatory
Raw potato juice has anti-inflammatory impact which means right from arthritis to those pains in your knees, in your elbows, in your neck, in your shoulders, in your joints, in your back; it has an anti-inflammatory effect and it can reduce that pain. A lot of my clients in Canada and the cold countries with extreme winters where arthritis and the pains to do with arthritis flare up during the cold season have found remarkable relief when they’ve started introducing raw potato juice into their diet. It helps the body reduce chronic inflammation.  Now inflammation is good for us as it’s the body’s natural defence mechanism to protect us. It becomes bad for us when it stays chronic, when the inflammation doesn’t come down. So raw potato juice has the ability to direct circulation of blood to all the areas of your body.

Improves Circulation
A lot of us suffer from many issues due to poor circulation. Proper circulation is important because circulation carries blood to all the cells of your body, billions of cells in your body and blood carries oxygen which is the vital life force and nutrients from the food that you eat to all those parts of the body. It’s not about what you eat it’s about how your body digest what you eat. It’s important that all the nutrients from the food you eat reach all these billions of cells and that happens when you have a good digestive system which comes with your proper blood circulation and potato juice helps increase circulation to all those cells in the human body.

Alkaline
Potato juice is also highly alkaline and we all know the whole acidic alkaline ratio of the body. Most diseases breed in an acidic environment and although the body has a natural pH balance to balance out acidic and alkaline levels with lifestyle and a constant exposure to junk food, stress, antibiotics and medicines, we tend to be more acidic and sometimes we have to help the body become alkaline. Raw potato juice does that fantastically which is why most of my cancer patient’s wake up to some amount of raw potato juice in the mornings and at night or in between the day to help keep their bodies alkaline.

Skin Health
When it comes to skin; applying raw potato juice to your skin is absolutely beneficial especially in terms of eczema. I have a lot of clients from the Middle East, Saudi Arabia Dubai, and Abu Dhabi where because of the kind of climate eczema gets you know enhanced and no amount of application of oils and steroidal creams really work. But we found out that raw potato juice when applied to the areas that have eczema constantly for about 10 to 15 days brings about immediate relief and we’ve also got feedback from children and adults who have been using it for their children that the eczema is totally disappearing.

Uric Acid
When it comes to gout, uric acid is something that many people suffer from every single day and you get that pain in your toes and uric acid is not really a good sign for you anyway because it shows and it tells you it’s a bio feedback from your body telling you that your kidney isn’t working right, your kidney is unable to remove uric acid from your body. Raw potato juice has the ability to break down and flush out uric acid from your body. So if you suffer from that uric acid it’s a great option for you to try and get on to a raw potato juice one glass in the morning, one glass at night.

Gastritis
This is something that so many people suffer from extreme acidity, extreme stomach disorders in digestion, flatulence and bloating. For this i recommend one to two tablespoons of raw potato juice mixed with a little bit of water before your lunch, before your dinner and before your breakfast. Do this for about one to two weeks and you will find that you get some amount of relief using raw potato juice to treat this.

Cholesterol
Potatoes are rich in fibre which helps clean out excess cholesterol from your system and also potatoes do not contain cholesterol at all which means that makes it low cholesterol or zero cholesterol food for use.

Kidney Detox
Raw potato juice is excellent for detoxifying the kidney, the liver, the gallbladder and in general your entire body because these are the key organs which need to be detoxified all the time. It helps you build immunity; it helps you detoxify the body right from cholesterol to cancer to arthritis to your general well-being.

Good Hair
Clients have been using raw potato juice in their hair and they all come back with feedback that hair has becomes softer. There are a lot of scientific write-ups about how it has the ability to even change pigmentation. So people say that the greying of their hair actually slow down. Now you can use raw potato juice directly on your hair, you can wash it off after 20 minutes or you can wash it off after an hour and it makes your hair soft and black and it’s absolutely fantastic for dandruff or any eczema in the head as well it keeps your hair clean as well. You make raw potato juice and soak in cotton and you apply it to the bottom of your eyes where you usually have the puffiness before you sleep and you keep it on for a while and it’s great when it comes to reducing these black circles that’s if your black circles are not caused by lack of sleep.

Now remember there’s always a disclaimer, you need to speak to your doctor before doing this if you have high potassium problems, especially high potassium in your blood because raw potatoes and potatoes are rich in potassium. So if you have been advice to be on a low potassium diet by your doctor’s or by your nutritionist, potato is something that you should be very careful of because it’s rich in potassium.

Human body is made up of billions of cells. Good health and immunity is about the health of your cells. When there is correct communication between all these cells, your hormones communicate the right way and you’re able to lose weight. Wrong communication between these cells because of imbalances of energy causes sickness, disease and inability to lose weight.

Role of Carbs
Carbohydrates are a macronutrient which means its job is to provide energy. The cells of your entire nervous system need a source of energy from carbohydrates and not from fats or proteins to survive.  So when you go on these low carb diets you actually create imbalances in the energy between the cells in your nervous system. Fats and proteins cannot give your nervous cells the energy it needs, that energy has to come only from carbohydrates. There are good carbs and there are bad carbs. There is good protein and there is bad protein and there are good fats and bad fats. You need to select the right quality of protein carbs and fats and then it works for your body.

Vitamins
There are a lot of vitamins especially the b-complex vitamins and all the B vitamins which are responsible for almost everything ranging from the quality of your skin, the quality of your hair, weight loss, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, the formation of new cells, your immunity; all of these vitamins play a crucial role and they also play a role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fat. When you have an imbalance of carbohydrates and fat in your diet you don’t allow certain vitamins to be synthesized in the human body and usually in most cases diseases are created. Also vitamin A is not just good for your eyes but it is also very powerful vitamin A for your immunity, skin and hair.

So you see that one drug is made for one disease but one vitamin can handle multiple ailments in the body because they’re designed to work with one another. So don’t deprive yourself of carbohydrates. Take the right kind of carbohydrates. The wrong carbohydrates will make you fat and will create disease but the good carbohydrates will actually help you synthesize vitamins correctly in your body and will allow so many other reactions to happen the right way. In fact when you eat the right amount of good carbohydrates you provide energy in your body that can be used to actually burn fat.

No to Fad Diets
Fad diets which tell you to reduce your portion of carbohydrates and deprives you of all these calories may be effective in the short term, the ketogenic diet may be great while people lose weight but they lose their health in the long run. No one tells you what happens post losing the weight. The quality of life post losing all that weight is, people lose their hair, energy levels, their sex drive, the quality of their skin because it’s a diet that’s deficient in vitamins. Did you know, fat is not only meant to be a source of energy for all your cells, it is also used to generate hormones in your body.

So aim for a balanced and smart diet and more of lifestyle changes. We don’t get fat because of carbohydrates, we get fat because we don’t move enough to burn the carbohydrates that we’re eating which is necessary for the human body. So we need to look at these finer details and make lifestyle changes.

Cumin has a number of health benefits, the ability to fight off diseases to burning fat. It has the ability to lower blood sugar levels, detoxify your liver, lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, fight off colds and virals and it is highly anti-inflammatory antiseptic anti-microbial and antibiotic.

Trace Minerals & Vitamins
Cumin seeds are an excellent source of iron, manganese, magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin b1. Now most Indian meals and most Indian curries consist of ‘jeera’ added to them. You can have it raw, sprinkle it over vegetables, or you can make a tea out of it. It has the ability to lower blood sugar levels when you consume a teaspoon or half a teaspoon with water or with your meals or just before your meal. It is also used to improve digestion because cumin has the ability to stimulate appetite when taken before your meal and when cumin is consumed post a meal or consumed with your meal it has the ability of stimulating digestive enzymes to break the food that we eat thus preventing indigestion, bloating, flatulence and acidity.

Better Digestion
Cumin seeds also stimulate pancreatic enzymes in the pancreas and this is extremely important to help break down carbohydrates proteins and fat from the food that you eat into useable form by the body. So it basically helps you with the assimilation of the nutrients that you get from your food and again in most diseases and most normal people our digestive enzymes are depleted because of environmental pollutants and contamination in foods. So cumin can stimulate these digestive enzymes which are extremely important.

Antibiotic & Antibacterial
Cumin contains an ingredient called thymol which is highly antibiotic and antimicrobial which means it has the ability to chase viruses’ bacteria and fungi in the human body. So the next time you’re down with a flu or you’re falling sick or whatever ailment you have try to get cumin into your diet because it has the ability to fight viruses and bacteria and fungi which means it clearly boosts immunity.

So how can you get cumin into your diet?
So making something as simple as cumin tea where you take cumin and you boil it in water and you consume that water it aids digestion it boosts your immunity and it has the ability to detoxify your liver which is why researchers research is strongly showing that cumin has the ability to prevent certain kinds of cancers like liver and stomach because it has the ability to clean out the liver especially from excessive alcohol intake, medication, chemotherapy, radiation, everything that toxifies or slows down the liver. For all nursing mothers I suggest adding cumin to your diet as it also helps in lactation which is why we usually have a habit of mixing cumin or jeera with fenugreek or methi to increase breast milk production which is simply lactation in a nursing mother.

You have it before your meals, you sprinkle it onto your dals, and you can roast the jeera and grind it into a powder. Now a lot of people prefer to chew it. You know chewing is great but a lot of it will just pass out of your system if it doesn’t digest too well. So roast it or don’t roast it; make a powder of it but keep a jar full of cumin powder at home you can sprinkle it in your chaas, lassies, dals and your lentils and just have it with plain water before your meal or after your meal depending on how you want to use cumin for your body.
