Simple Cake Smash, I know that seems an odd blog title.

But quite honestly this is the best way I can sum up my style of 1st birthday sessions.

Simplicity is absolutely key. No themes, jazzy decorations, bright outfits.

Just your baby being adorable, playing with beautiful natural wood toys, enjoying a little white cake & splashing in a little white bath tub.

A simple cake smash.

Years ago I wanted to plan a session to celebrate my sons first birthday, but couldn’t find a style that I liked.

They were all a bit much & I wanted something more classic, where the focus was just on my baby.

So that’s when I devised my sessions.

The main part of the session I decided should be just letting your baby have fun playing with toys.

The studio is full of beautiful organic wooden toys & adorable teddies.

Then we capture some natural, honest family photos.

Out comes the cake. It’s a little tiered white cake that is just adorable & perfect for little hands.

Finally we bring out the little white bath tub to clean up any mess & have a splash about.

You see, a simple cake smash.

Best Christmas photo gifts, there are so many cheesy photo gifts out there.

A face plastered on a mug, or a mouse pad no one will ever use.

That I decided enough was enough & I was going to go on the hunt for stylish, beautiful photo gifts that both you and your family would treasure.

So here’s my run down of the best gifts out there, enjoy & happy shopping!

Sophia Victoria Joy – https://www.sophiavictoriajoy.com

This is the best site for Christmas gifts, everything is so beautiful! These are a few of my favourite photo gifts that they offer, but if you’ve got a new baby in the family make sure you have a look at their Baby’s first Christmas gifts, they’re so perfect!

Inkifi – https://inkifi.com

I adore their print products, they’re incredibly good quality and fantastic value. All of their products and prints are wonderfully simple and timeless. These are a few of my favourite bits, the calendar would be particularly fabulous as a Christmas gift.

Arfifact Uprising – https://www.artifactuprising.com

They’re based in America, but do ship internationally and I had to mention them as I adore everything that they do. They’re prints and products are stylish and an incredible quality.

Sarah & Bendrix – https://www.sarahandbendrix.com

Although they don’t have that many photo gifts I still had to include the incredible Sarah & Bendrix as everything they have is amazing. So if you’re stuck for ideas on what to get the little ones in your life then look no further.

If I spot anymore I will keep adding and if there are any sites that you’ve seen that should be on this list please do comment below and I’ll add them in.

Suzi xx

New born baby, or new born babies if you’ve been blessed with twins, triplets or even quads!

They don’t like to be fussed with & quite frankly hate being naked.

All a new born baby wants is to be warm, comfy, full and near mummy and daddy.

And it’s these facts that form the basis of my new born photography sessions.

In my photography you’ll notice that the baby is almost always dressed and I don’t pose them.

It’s hugely different from the norm in new born photography and because of that I thought it would be worth explaining why I chose to break from the norm.

New Born Babies Hate Being Naked

I’ve never met a new born baby that likes it.

Some will tolerate it if there room is warm enough, they’re very asleep, or are wrapped up.

But the crux is that it often makes them very sad.

The reason is that new borns lose heat from their bodies 4x faster than adults*.

So as soon as they are undressed their temperature plummets.

Plus, because they can’t regulate their own body temperature.

It takes them longer to warm up again after being redressed.

Remembering Your New Born as they Truly are

New borns are so incredibly individual and I’m a firm believer that you can see our personalities from that very first day.

Some new babies like to sleep on their backs with arms outstretched, some prefer their sides, some just want to be on their fronts and despite laying them on their backs you’ll return every time to find them snuggled up on their tummies.

I feel it’s important to capture all of these unique details and incredible memories in your photos.

To photograph how your new born baby moves, from their legs, to their arms and their beautiful expressions.

If your baby was asleep for the whole session, or in set poses then I wouldn’t be able to capture all of these details that show your new babies personality.

So that’s why for my new born photography I chose to have babies dressed, usually in a simple white vest that will never go out of fashion and is what you’ll remember seeing them in everyday. And why I chose to photograph new babies naturally.

Simple, natural, beautiful new born photography.

Cake smash London, you’re probably thinking it’s a bit of a random title for a blog.

But with the number of people from London that book a cake smash session with me, then I just had to write a little something for you.

I think it’s my natural, simple style that appeals.

Most other photographers opt for a more bright, themed approach to cake smash photoshoots, which is beautiful.

But I prefer for my cake smashes to be more pure and organic.

It means the focus of the cake smash is entirely on your baby. No distractions.

So for those looking for a cake smash London, who want images that are timeless and show your baby as they truly are, then fingers crossed I’m the photographer for you.

In my cake smash photography I keep the colour pallet totally neutral.

By sticking to whites, beiges and soft pastels then the images will remain timeless. Classic and avoiding the ties of fashions.

All of the toys in the studio are made of natural wood, again so that they’ll never date and still allow your baby to take centre stage.

A local baker makes the cakes for the sessions. They’re mini tiered naked cakes.

The size means that they’re easy for little hands to hold and the white icing in the lovely naked cake style looks beautiful in photos.

Then we finish with a splash and bubbles in the mini bath tub.

I’d love to see you and your little one and if you’d like some more information please CLICK HERE.

Cake Smash Hemel is an odd title for a blog when you first think about it.

But I’m not bonkers I promise.

I’m simply a Hemel Hempstead based photographer who specialises in 1st birthday cake smashes, so the title just seemed to fit.

I adore how well received my style of cake smash is, not just with those in Hemel Hempstead (although I’m just around the corner for you guys), but by everyone across the country.

I do things a bit differently and although that was a risk, going against the norm always is, I’m so incredibly happy that there are so many other people who like this style too.

You see cake smashes are normally themed, or very bright and colourful.

Which is beautiful, but it just didn’t work for me.

I wanted the baby to be the focus and all of the other excitement I found distracted me.

So in my cake smash photos we keep things super simple.

Every session is held at my home photography studio in Hemel Hempstead, which is a lovely natural light filled room and perfect for little ones.

I keep everything very neutral and timeless.

From the room which is all white, to the clothing which I source from all around the world, the cake which is a mini tiered white naked cake, right through to the toys which are all natural wood and look beautiful in images.

We let your little one have the best time, playing with whatever toys they like, then we bring in the cake and finish it all with a little splash in the mini bath tub.

I also don’t pose, I’d rather capture your baby as they are, how they move, everything about them.

The result is photos of your little one with genuine smiles and true laughs.

Photos that capture every detail of them and a memory of the fun way you celebrated their 1st birthday.

If your little one is turning 1 soon then please do get in touch and I have some more information on my cake smash sessions HERE.

Child Modelling – A Simple How to Guide

Child modelling isn’t something I’d ever thought about before starting Little White Photography.

But I see so many adorable little ones, who I know would be amazing for commercial photoshoots.

So I’ve been doing as much research as I can to help anyone thinking about getting their little one into baby or child modelling.

First let’s have a look at which agencies there are.

The agencies generally fall into 2 categories.

  • Sole agencies are the ones that you can only be represented by them.
  • Non sole agencies are the ones that allow you to be represented by other agencies as well.

Sole Agencies

Non Sole Agencies

Then comes social media

There’s a Facebook group called “Parents of Child Models UK” that is fantastic, it has so much advice & information. So if you’re serious about child modelling then definitely go and have a look.

Then I’d advise following the agencies that catch your eye on either Instagram or Facebook.

This means you can get a real feel for the agency, the types of jobs their clients book & the way they look after their clients.

For instance Zebedee management seem to have a really personal approach with their clients & write really kind, insightful posts.

I’ve also heard wonderful things about Tiny Angels model agency & know of a few people that would highly recommend them.

Time to think about the Pro’s & Con’s

Child modelling can be an amazing experience:

  • You’ll have so many awesome photos of your little one to treasure as keep sakes.
  • You’ll meet lots of new people & there’s a real community spirit.
  • It can be really fun and exciting for your child. Different places, fun things to do, new people.
  • & of course the money, which can build up your little ones savings.

But there are cons that should be considered before applying to an agency:

  • Lots of jobs only give very short notice for shoots & castings.
  • Children often get ‘pencilled’ (shortlisted) so you’ll sort childcare etc. but then your child could get dropped on the day.
  • It can be disappointing when you travel for a casting and then not get booked.
What do you need to apply?

So you’ve taken all of the pro’s & con’s into consideration & decided on which agency/agencies you prefer, what’s next?

  • At first you’ll just need to send a couple of colour snaps of your child, these can be ones you’ve taken or professional photos. The agency would then decide whether they’ll use these images for your Childs profile, or if a professional photoshoot is needed.
  • Ask the agency their terms – is there a charge to join? (sometimes there’s not a joining charge, but they ask you to pay £50-£100 for the required professional headshots/profile images that they book for you. What are their payment terms? (some only pay out twice a year, some pay out via cheque once the funds from the company/brand clear. What % commission do they take from each booking (this is usually between 10-20%)?

If your child doesn’t get accepted please never get upset or disheartened. If an agency has a child with a similar look to your own then they’re unlikely to accept your child simply on this basis.

& finally just a quick thank you to Danielle for all your help, you’ve been an absolute and complete star xx

Baby photoshoots, they’re a funny thing really aren’t they.

When I used to think of photoshoots I always imagined big flashing lights, lots of outfit changes and more props than I’ve ever seen before.

And all of that doesn’t really work with a baby.

The big flashing lights are frankly scary and no baby likes getting changed.

Yet this seems to still be the fashion for baby photoshoots.

Odd huh.

But when I started out I knew I wanted to do things differently.

I wanted my baby photoshoots to be stripped back and the focus put back onto the baby.

Because lets be frank, the whole point of a baby photoshoot is to capture images and memories of your baby.

So I kicked out all the big flashing lights and decided instead to keep things simple.

A beautiful white room filled with natural light.

And I ditched all the jazzy props in favour of some simple organic wooden toys from Sarah & Bendrix.

I decided that my baby photos wouldn’t be about what baby was wearing and that keeping clothing natural, neutral and simple would mean that not only would the images be classic and timeless, but that we wouldn’t be annoying your baby with a million fiddly wardrobe changes.

My baby photoshoots focus on your baby and I capture images of your baby just as they are.

Every detail from their little dimpled hands, to the adorable ways they sit, roll, play or crawl.

Do you know what, it can sometimes be a bit of a dog eat dog world.

& that’s certainly true of photography.

Luckily I’ve met some of the nicest people you could imagine through photography.

But I do sometimes hear sad stories where a strange sense of competition, or perhaps jealousy has driven people to do strange things.

Well I say to heck with that!

If I can help a fellow photographer in anyway then yippee!

One thing I thought could be helpful is if I finally pull my finger out and create a list of all the vendors and suppliers that I’ve sourced my super cute bits for sessions from.

I’ve found some amazing bits while up all hours with my boys and regularly get asked where bits are from.

So here you are, a full list of all the lovelies that I have discovered.

Cake Stand:

  • I found the cutest little cake stand in 2016 & have adored it ever since. It’s super dinky and holds a 4inch cake perfectly. It’s by an American seller on Etsy called Pinkrosecottage and to see the listing CLICK HERE.

ONE Letters:

  • I found these letters via Instagram and immediately fell in love, they are so beautiful and amazingly well made. The seller (Love Letters by Tillie) is based in Australia and for her website CLICK HERE

Mini bath tub:

  • I use this in every 1st birthday cake smash and absolutely love it. It’s really sturdy which is very important from a safety point of view and is made of a resilient plastic so will last forever. The seller is Lux S and for their website CLICK HERE

Toys:

  • It’s absolutely no secret that I adore everything Sarah & Bendrix sells. Almost all of the gorgeous wooden toys in the studio are from them & I honestly couldn’t recommend them more. To have a gander at all of the beautiful things they sell CLICK HERE

Cakes:

  • In Hertfordshire we are ridiculously spoilt with not 1 but 2 INCREDIBLE cake makers. They are honestly superb and I can’t recommend them more. So The Curson Cake House and Lotti & Lu, you guys really well and truly rule!

Fingers crossed this little list will be helpful and to all the awesome vendors I’ve mentioned, you guys RULE!

So you’ve been searching “family photographer St Albans” and trawling through no end of websites.

I bet you didn’t realise how many options there were and how confusing it can all be.

Plus when you have a family you don’t have the time to spend hours looking through all of the websites that appear under ‘family photographer St Albans”.

And that is exactly why I thought I’d pull together this mini how to guide on picking the right family photographer for you.

First we’ll start with the style of family photography you may be after.

Family Photography Style

Studio –

This is as it says on the tin, you visit the photographers studio. For younger children it can be best to find someone with a home studio (which is what I have) as it’s a more relaxed environment and is less likely to scare them.

Studio photography has a more simplistic look that means your family is the focus and studio photographers tend to either specialise in posed family photography, or natural family photography.

Lifestyle –

This is when the photographer comes to your house / a place of your choosing and photographs your family there.

I love the fact that they capture your life as it is and in a place your while family is most at ease.

But this style may not be for everyone for example I’d worry about cleaning the house before the shoot and wanting everything to be spotless, plus you may prefer a more simplistic look.

There’s also the fact that not every house is lucky enough to have lots of lovely light and a lack of light can make family lifestyle photoshoots tricky.

Outdoor –

I 100000% recommend outdoor family photoshoots when you have older children. It’s where you’ll truly be able to capture their personalities.

Letting them run free and have fun is awesome to see and even better to photograph.

My boys are 2 and 4 years old and I only ever photograph them outside.

The only challenge is the weather, however I’m of the opinion that if it’s windy fly a kit, if it’s cold wrap up and snuggle and if it’s rainy jump in puddles. Whatever the weather gives you on the day can create stunning family photos.

So those are the 3 main styles of family photography and once you know which you prefer it will make finding your “family photographer St Albans” so much easier.

I’ve included some examples below of the style of family photography that I specialise in.

I call it natural studio photography and it’s basically capturing your family in a totally natural, authentic way, but in the comfort of a studio.

Cake smash Harpenden, you may think that’s an odd title for a blog article and you’d be right.

But I’m lucky to have so many families from Harpenden book me for their little ones cake smash photos that I thought you all deserved a blog article dedicated just to you.

I have a home studio in Hemel Hempstead, which is a short 30-40 minute drive from Harpenden.

Plus that short drive from Harpenden to Hemel Hempstead is often the perfect time for your little one to have a power snooze before all the fun begins in their cake smash.

Why do so many people from Harpenden book their cake smash with me?

It’s my unique photography style that seems to attract to many lovely families from Harpenden.

You’ll have seen so many of the big, bright, prop filled cake smash photoshoots around and as lovely as they are, that’s not for me.

Instead my cake smash sessions are much simpler and more natural.

I have a beautiful natural light filled studio and I keep everything perfectly minimal, meaning your baby is the total focus of the photos.

My images have a timeless quality, so you won’t look back in 15 years time and cringe at the colours, or fashions.

Simple, natural, authentic and beautiful photography.

From the organic wooden toys, to the stunning tiered white cake and the little mini white roll top bath tub.

Every part of the session is perfectly planned to ensure your baby has the best time and you walk away with the most amazing photographs and memories.

So if you’re a family in Harpenden looking for the right cake smash photographer for you, then I hope you won’t need to search any further.

Below is a little sneak peek at a recent cake smash photoshoot I did for the loveliest family from Harpenden and for more information on my cake smash sessions please CLICK HERE.
