Today’s post is going to be short but informative. I get this question all the time, on social media, from friends, family and people I meet on the street. Everyone wants to know what products to use and how to start a skin-care routine. So let’s get right into how to start a skin-care routine for beginners.
If you have skin problems such as discoloration, hyperpigmentation, acne, dull skin, lack of glow, dark spots, black heads and sensitive skin keep reading.
What is your skin type
The first information you need to know before you start buying products and building a skin-care routine is you need to know your skin type. My skin type is combination/oily. My T-zone is oily, my cheeks are normal and around my mouth is dry.
Next what are your skin concerns, my concerns are dark spots and skin brightening. Those are what I want to treat on my skin. Once you know these 2 information, then you can buy the products according to your skin type and skin concerns.
These are the basic skin-care products that I would recommend and what has helped me to get my skin the way I prefer it to look on a daily basis.
You need an exfoliating face wash. There are 2 types of exfoliating face wash physical and chemical. I rotate between both but I prefer the physical scrub. You can remove build up and dead skin faster with a physical scrub, for my skin type I use it 3-4 times a week.
Here are 2 exfoliating face wash that I’ve been using and loving the past few months.
Both of these products exfoliates and smooth the skin texture. The Ambi is a chemical scrub and the Burt’s bee is a physical scrub. Currently I alternate between them weekly.
A face mask is essential in everyones skin care routine. A face mask is a skin treatment that can help you with your skin problems, like the ones I described above. Get a face mask that caters to your skin needs. Honestly my skin needs changes every month. So I usually have about 4 – 5 face mask on hand. However, for a beginner 1 to 2 face mask is good enough to start. Find one that caters to your biggest skin problem. Here are a few face mask I use and would recommend.
Everyone needs a moisturizer for their skin. Moisturizers lubricates the skin. While fighting dryness and dehydration. It also acts as a barrier to shield from environmental pollution. Here are my recommendations

Okay! Let’s get into the 3 easy ways to pamper yourself for free:
Decrease puffy eyes:
Do you have any cucumbers near you? If so I think you should grab them and use them as a beauty treatment for the skin around your eyes. Why cucumbers? Because it is rich in vitamin C. Cucumbers can help reduce swollen and puffy eyes, it also aids in brightening the eye area. Plus cucumbers increase the skin elasticity. How to: 1.Make sure the cucumber is cold or chilled 2.Peel the cucumber 3.Cut the cucumber into medium size circles 4. Place piece of the cucumber on each eye for 15 – 20 minutes
Reduce hair loss:
Next you want to reach into your pantry or cabinets and grab a tea bag. Black tea or green tea bag works great. The tea bag helps to stop hair shedding and promotes shiny hair. Black and green tea reduces hair loss while treating scalp conditions.
Shampoo your hair first. Boil water and pour the water on the tea bag as you would when you are making tea. Let the tea cool. Pour the tea into a spray bottle or directly pour the tea on the hair. Let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse and condition your hair after. Organic green or black tea works best because it’s in the purist form but regular tea works too.
Milk face mask:
Everyone has some type of milk in their refrigerator, hopefully. You can use any milk for this face treatment. Organic, raw, natural, cows milk, lactose free milk and dairy free milk is perfectly fine to use.
Milk has so many amazing benefits for the skin! Milk can be used as a face cleanser, remove excess oil from the skin and prevent black heads. Milk is also a great moisturizer. Milk helps with hyperpigmentation, the lactic acid properties aids to naturally lighten discoloration on the skin.
Cleanse your face before applying the milk mask. Pour the milk in a small bowl. You can use a cotton pad or a clean makeup brush to apply the milk to your face and neck. Let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Your skin will feel soft, clean and look brighter.
Let me know in the comments below, if you have any free or easy pamper tips?
Let’s be real, some of us barely exfoliate the skin below the neck. Since I was a kid I’ve been exfoliating the skin below my neck. Maybe not with fancy products but with a regular wash cloth.
Fast forward to modern day skin-care. The skin-care industry has evolved into selling high tech skin-care gadgets. One step below that are awesome products that exfoliate your skin without the extra scrubbing and the need of a wash cloth.
Now I use an exfoliating wash cloth almost everyday. When I have busy days and no time to spend scrubbing my body like a mad woman, I reach for a physical exfoliating body scrub. It works just the same as a wash cloth, if not better! I’m always pleasantly happy with my results every time.
Sharing my best skin-care finds with you is something I love to do! Today I’ll share with you what body scrub I have been using to get glowy and healthy skin below your neck.
Glowy and healthy looking skin:
The past 2 months I’ve been using Rituals rejuvenating pink salt scrub in the shower. It smells amazing and its super moisturizing. Whenever I step out of the shower my skin is glowing. Mainly because of the natural oils that are packed within the scrub. I promise you that I did not have to add any lotion to my body after using this product!
The salt in the Rituals rejuvenating pink salt scrub helps to break down dirt, build up and oils from the skin. The combination of the oils and pink salt gave my skin a brighter and vibrant look.
Even thou I did not use the Rituals rejuvenating pink salt scrub everyday, I looked forward to it every-time I had the chance to use it. On my first used I saw my legs went from dull, rough and dry to glowy, moisturized, and healthy looking. I used this product about 2-3 times a week.
Rituals rejuvenating pink salt scrub is oil base with whitish-pink salt. The salt was gentle on my skin but still did a wonderful job of removing dead skin from my body. When left alone the oil settles above the salt. I usually mix it around so the oil and salt become one before I use it.
On the second week of using Rituals rejuvenating pink salt scrub the blotchiness on my skin was slowly disappearing. After a month my skin started feeling firm and looking healthy.
The most important result for me using the Rituals rejuvenating pink salt scrub was I did not have to use a body lotion or moisturizer after the shower. My skin was moisturized to the fullest! Which means that I skipped the moisturizing step in my skin-care routine and had a little more time to get dress in the mornings!
Honestly I was blown away because I have one of the dries skin in the world, haha at least I think I do. Rituals rejuvenating pink salt scrub definitely got my skin prep and ready to show off my legs, arms and back for the summer.

If you are reading this, then you want to know why it’s important to get rid of toxic people from your life.
Practicing self-care has become a daily ritual in my lifestyle. I use to be the person who would allow people to control what I do. The way I felt and base on what they thought about me, sometimes that would influence the way I react to certain situations. I thought I needed to change. Become more harsh and tough so I could continue to have those toxic people in my life.
Fortunately I realized that I am not the problem but I needed to remove them from my life. The moment I removed toxic people from my life new doors opened for me. I felt confident with my point of views and I met new folks that were positive, friendly and honestly wanted the best for me.
Here are 3 reasons why it’s important to get rid of toxic people from your life:
Toxic people can corrupt your attitude. Have you been around someone who was negative and you started acting, talking and being negative about a lot of things around you. Your mood may have changed in a negative way towards the people who actually cares about you. Now you have become a downer about everything whether it’s small or big. After a while you find yourself in a hole so deep you forgot how you got there. It’s not worth it in the end!
Your confidence will boost significantly. Because you do not have someone constantly telling you that you need to do this and that on their terms and only their way. The negative talk and the blaming will be in the pass. You will feel happy about yourself again.
You will meet new people that actually cares about your self-worth. It’s hard to let go of old friendships and someone who you love. If it’s a family member maybe the door can be left open. When they are ready to be kind and positive towards you maybe you can slowly let them in but for now it makes no sense to be loyal to someone who treats you less than. Setting boundaries with toxic people will only make you live a peaceful, happy, uplifting and positive life. This is you truly knowing yourself worth and respecting yourself enough to take action.
In 2016 I ran my first 5k. If you are following me on social media then you already know that this pass Saturday I ran my second 5k. It was surprisingly easy, fun and more than what I expected it to be! The main reason why it was such a great experience because I prepared myself mentally to take it easy and enjoy it as much as possible. I told myself that this race was only for fun, burn calories, get free stuff, haha and get my heart rate up. Basically I created positive thoughts for myself about this race so I would enjoy it. Exercise is better when it’s fun!
Three things you didn’t know exercise can do for your body:
Weight loss is not the number 1 goal:
Most people including myself associate exercise with weight loss. In fact weight loss is probably not the most important benefit that our bodies experience with exercise. However, it is one of the first benefits you can physically see.
Exercise has plenty of positive benefits for the body. It can improve your mood, brain activity, increase energy, decrease your risk from diabetes and improve your heart. Of course in time weight loss will happen and that’s great but it should not be the main focus. You can be skinny and feel like crap. You can be skinny and experience low energy often. Focus on the long term health goals of exercising.
The runners high:
What is the runner’s high?! It’s feeling so good to the point that you may not experience pain and tiredness, you can have increase energy, and increase endurance. Studies have shown that a lot of runners experience these feelings. I have felt the runner’s high many times!
Some people do not like running and not everyone may have experience the runners high. Those who have knows it’s an amazing experience and we keep going back for more. It’s like a drug but one that is good for your brain, muscles, heart and overall health.
Lower chance of bad knees and messed up joints:
I’ve read articles that states running messes up the knees and I agree to a certain extent. People who are over weight would probably have more knee problems in the long run than someone who exercises often. I am not saying runners won’t have bad knees but someone who is over weight has a higher chance to have bad knees. A runners body or someone that exercises often has less fat and leaner muscles which puts less pressure on the knees and joints over time.
Invest in a quality workout or runners sneakers. Eat a balance diet and don’t over exert your muscles which can help prevent injury.
This blog post is based on my overall experience and my research over the years. What are some benefits that you experience from exercising?
Last year my skin went through a rough patch and the after affects was even worse! I was left with dark spots on the side of both cheeks and forehead.
These are the steps that helped me get rid of dark spots on my face and body.
Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar have been used for centuries for the body both inside and out.
The vitamins that apple cider vinegar contains:
Apple cider vinegar is 94% fermented apples.
Apples contains vitamin C which helps to brighten the skin.
Apples contains vitamin A which has the ability to treat skin discoloration.
Last but not least the vitamin K reduce stubborn dark circles under the eyes. These are only a few of the vitamins in apple cider vinegar that can help get rid of dark spots.
How to use apple cider vinegar:
Half apple cider vinegar and half water. Always dilute apple cider vinegar with water.
My favorite spice turned beauty product. I definitely know that Turmeric got rid of my dark spots the fastest. The overall benefits that turmeric has on the skin is revolutionary. Such as calm skin conditions, fight off acne, reduce dark circles and protect against sun damage.
How to: Use a small bowl with 3 – 4 teaspoon of turmeric, few drops of water and mix until it becomes a paste. First cleanse your face and then apply the turmeric paste or mask. Use the turmeric mask 3 times a week for 15- 20 minutes each time for one month.
If you follow me on Instagram you already know that the month of February I named Ponds dark spot correcting cream the product of the month. After the first bottle I saw results. Ponds dark spot correcting cream, was assisting me with fading the dark spots that had not completely disappeared from using the natural remedies that I mentioned above. The ponds dark spot corrector polished and finished what was left of the fading dark spots.
Regardless of what you have planned for the holidays, you deserve to take some time out for yourself. Tomorrow you are probably back to your normal schedule and you may have less time to include the list below in your weekly routine. Here are a few tips that you can practice on Memorial Day or any holiday.
1.Get extra sleep! Did you know that lack of sleep prevents you from accurately solving problems and creates a negative mood.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), lack of sleep affects stress hormones, blood pressure and can cause healthy individuals to have diabetic-like conditions. The average sleep cycle ranges from 7-9 hours for adults. So catch up on your sleep friends!
Keep work off your mind
2. Sometimes when we are physically away from work our minds are still there. That is no way to spend the holiday or a day off. Use the holiday to have fun, relax and find something to keep your mind off work. Remember you will not get this day back so enjoy it while it last.
3. Eating healthy goes out the window on holidays. It’s that time to let down our hair and eat whatever we want. A mental note to myself do not end up in a food coma haha, maybe you are not as bad as I am but sometimes holidays can make me forget that I should eat healthy.
To prevent myself from falling into a food coma, I sometimes fast before the party or barbecue and during the fast I have a coffee and plenty of water. Another tip that works well is I add more vegetables to my plate. The truth is I get disappointed when I’ve ate healthy consistently for a few weeks and on one weekend it’s all out the window. Be mindful of what you eat and still enjoy yourself.
4. Prior to the holiday if you have a exercise routine you should stick with it. Especially, if you do not want to follow tip number three. Continue to do what works for you and if exercise works then do it on the holidays too.
On the days that I wear no makeup, my skin care routine is very simple.
Since I wore absolutely no make-up today, only skin-care products and a chapstick with SPF. Here are the steps that I take to get my face ready for bed in five minutes.
Usually I alternate between 3 cleansers. Tonight I used the deep cleanser without the exfoliating beads from Kiehls, the deep cleanse foam face wash. Next massage the cleanser on my face and neck for 30 seconds. Then I rinse and dry my face with a clean face towel.
Apply a toner. My DIY toner:
Half organic apple cider vinegar and half filtered water.
Five drops of rosemary essential oils.
1 tea spoon of grape seed oil. A toner acts like water but its packed with nutrients and oils for the skin, depends on the toner and the brand. My DIY toner is very simple and 100% natural.
A face essence hydrates the skin. Sometimes I use it in place of a moisturizer because I like to go to bed with less on my face. The feeling of my face being free helps me to sleep better. Jurlique is one of my favorite face essence, it balances the skin and maintain the hydration over night. The next morning my skin feels soft and supple.Read more here
Last but not least is one of my all time favorite eye cream from Charlotte Tilbury and its their Magic Eye Rescue Cream. The moment I apply the Magic Eye Rescue cream above and under my eyes it’s instantly hydrated. It has a soothing formula made with shea butter and anti-aging ingredients. I always get a beautiful glow after using this stuff!
Do you have a simple or extensive night time skin-care routine?
Self-care is the act of taking care of your physical, mental and emotional state. There are so many ways that you can practice self-care!
How do I practice self care, it could be anything from yoga, running, eating healthy, daily positive reinforcements to myself, journaling and of course a face mask.
Here are three self-care tips you may have not notice you can start doing today:
1. Give yourself a pat on the back! Sometimes we forget that we work hard and have accomplish things in our lives. No matter how small it is every accomplishment is a win!! Don’t be afraid to say I did something and I am proud of myself today.
2. Accept who you are! We sometimes compare ourselves to others and that is not good for our mental health. Stand tall and be proud of who you are becoming, as long as you are working to better yourself that is all that matters. It’s not about your status in life, if you are happy that’s all that matters in the end. 3. Life is a journey! Eating healthy is a journey, working on yourself is a journey, becoming the person you want to be is a journey. Sometimes what happens in our life is out of our control, don’t beat up yourself if you are in your 30s or 40s and you are still figuring life out. Once you are working towards the life you want that is the most important thing.
What do you do to improve self care on a daily basis? I would love to know your thoughts.
What is a face essence A face essence is an important part that you are probably missing out in your skin care routine. First, what is a face essence? It’s a product and solution that balances the skin after using a cleanser and toner. It acts similar to a make-up primer instead, it’s a skin-care primer. Make-up primers sets up your skin for a flawless finish, an essence is the perfect base to use to set up for your serums, moisturizers and so forth.
A face essence is important but are they needed Some of us only use a moisturizer on the face while some of us, like myself use much more, especially in my morning skin-care routine. Moisturizers and serums does not do the same job as an essence. The active ingredients in a face essence is lighter than a moisturizer so its great for sensitive skin. An essence provides nutrients deep within the skin. The main purpose of an essence is to hydrate and keep the skin healthy. Once you have healthy skin your serums and moisturizers works affectively. It is very beneficial to use an essence as your skin-care base before applying the rest of your products. At the end of the day you do not have to run out and buy a face essence but it is helpful to have one in your skin-care routine so your skin can have balance after cleansing and to set the base for the rest of your products.
How to apply a face essence Step 1. Cleanse your face
Step 2. Apply toner
Step 3. Apply face essence. You can skip the toner and go straight to the essence.
Always pour the essence into your hands and pat the essence into your face. Jurlique water essence is one of my favorite. Their essence is made from high performing plant extracts and botanicals which leaves the skin hydrated, smoother and re-energizes healthy looking skin. Their water essence is suitable for all skin types.
My experience using Jurlique activating water essence I’ve used Jurlique water essence for 8 months and I love it so much. It’s very light, non- greasy, non-sticky, and the instant difference after I apply it to my skin is worth every penny. My skin feels less dry it glows and feels firm. I use it on my face, neck and hands. Most of the times I prefer to have a very light skin-care routine at nights, less is more. I do not do this every night but sometimes I use the essence in-place of a moisturizer right before I go to sleep because it is very hydrating, lighter than a moisturizer and filled with natural oils. The next morning my skin is soft and hydrated. A little goes a long way and it last a very long time. However, I wouldn’t recommend using this in place of a moisturizer during the day time or for your daily skin-care routine. Overall I really appreciate the amazing formula in this Jurlique water essence and I would definitely repurchase it.
What are your thoughts and do you use a face essence in your skin-care routine?
