Anyone who owns a business understands that the success of the business starts with the employees. While taking a day away from the office for a corporate team building event may seem like something that could detract from the overall productivity of your company, there are quite a few benefits to investing in your employees. Learn about the benefits of corporate team building at Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center below!
Encourages Connections with Employees
Although your employees may see each other every day, the office atmosphere can make it difficult for camaraderie and relationships to develop. With corporate team building at Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center, your employees will have a chance to interact outside of the typical work day. Our corporate team building events allow your employees to talk and hang out together while also working toward a common goal. In the years Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center has hosted corporate team building events, we’ve had countless company managers tell us how the relationships between their employees were better than ever before after a trip to our adventure park.
Gets Everyone Out of the Office
Going to the same place day in and day out can become monotonous after a while. Break up that monotony by planning a corporate team building adventure! A day trip to Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center will get your employees out and moving in the fresh air and away from computers and phones for the day. This break from the usual day-to-day activities is a welcome respite that can leave your employees energized and refreshed for the continuing work week.
Shows Employees that the Company is Invested in Them
If employee morale is down, chances are high that your employees are greatly aware of the dissatisfaction at their job. When you take the initiative to plan corporate team building events to better employee morale, you show your employees that they are a priority of the business. Your company starts with your employees, and improving relationships and building your team shows your investment in the people who keep your business up and running.

At Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center in Middletown, Connecticut, we offer leadership development programs that build strong, confident leaders. By ziplining through the Connecticut wildness and maneuvering through our survival courses, we provide scenarios that challenge participants, increase their self-confidence, and teach self-reliance. Leadership can only be taught through real experiences, so at Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center, our leadership development programs fulfill a much-needed role. Here are some of the positive impacts strong, confident leaders can have on others.
Leaders Boost Morale
In professional organizations, strong and encouraging leaders have a huge impact on employee satisfaction. Organizations with strong leadership have more productive work environments and less turnover than organizations lacking leadership. Confident leaders do not merely delegate tasks and demand results. Instead, they create an environment where people are excited to work and feel rewarded for their efforts.
Leadership development teaches participants how to identify goals and work with others to make those goals a reality. Participants learn that many goals need the help of others and it’s their job, as leaders, to motivate and encourage those around them.
Leaders Engage Others
One of the biggest reasons why people feel dissatisfied with their lives is because they feel disconnected with their work. Oftentimes, people don’t quite understand the importance of their work assignments or how their efforts accomplish an overarching goal. Strong leaders clearly communicate their vision with others so people better understand the value of their own work. By setting up a communicative environment, people are more likely to work hard and reach their full potential.
In leadership development programs at Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center, participants are taught how to clearly communicate their ideas to others. To accomplish goals, you must learn how to motivate those around you.
Leaders Handle Adversity
Effective leaders must be confident and courageous. During hardships, leaders stay calm and face their problems head-on. Through their confidence, leaders demand respect and receive trust. In our leadership development programs at Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center, participants learn self-coaching skills they can use in difficult situations. Through our adventurous, yet challenging leadership development experiences, participants build confidence that can be translated into real-life results.

A strong leadership is a vital element to the success of any business or organization. Your leadership sets the precedent for the productivity of your employees and, in turn, affects the productivity of your business overall. At Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center in Connecticut, we understand the importance of continuous leadership development both in and out of the office. To build a strong leadership team, you must create shared experiences for the members of your team to bond over. Learn more about the importance of shared experiences in leadership development below.
Shared Experiences Bring Camaraderie
The best way to create better connections and communication between people is to create a shared experience for them to bond over. This is definitely the case for leadership groups as well. When you get out of the office and have a day of leadership development activities and excitement at Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center in Connecticut, you provide your leadership teams with an experience that is truly unique to just your team. This shared experience bonds your leaders together and creates a point for jokes that can carry over for years to come.
Shared Experiences Show How People Work Together
The primary focus of the leadership development programs at Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center is to create situations where your team will learn how to work together. With any leadership team, you want to know how everyone works together in a variety of situations. Certain personalities and traits work better together than others, and a leadership development retreat is a great way to analyze the personalities of your leaders and see how they work together in a safe environment that won’t have a potentially negative impact on your business. If any issues between members arise during our program, we will work with the members of the team to address the problems and create a plan to fix them.
Shared Experiences Build Community
The leadership of a business or organization is the backbone to the success of the employees and the business in general. While you want your workers focused on the business, productivity actually increases when employees feel like they are part of a community. This sense of community starts with your leaders. Through leader development, your core leadership team will develop relationships and strengthen bonds that already existed. Through the training, our staff teaches the team how to carry that strengthened sense of community to the rest of your employees.

Corporate team building events at Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center are meant to help your team work together more cohesively, communicate across departments, respect one another, and foster relationships. You can’t just expect to show up at a corporate team building event and have everything fall perfectly into place. Sure, the Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Centers team will create team building exercises based on your needs and catered to your unique situation, but your team must be prepared and in the right place to absorb and grow from this learning process.
Set Clear Goals
If you are planning a corporate team building event, you probably see some areas of your team that need improvement. Don’t try to tackle every issue at once—you will only confuse team members and get very little accomplished. Choose one or two key issues that the office struggles with, and clearly define your goal of having the team improve in these areas. If you clearly set and define your goals with the team, they can better take advantage of these team building activities for work.
Be Considerate of Their Time
You want your team building activities to reduce the stress of your employees and coworkers. Team building becomes a burden and often gets a bad rap simply because it is not scheduled in an effective and considerate way. Get a feel for when people would be most open to going to an event. Some employees don’t mind going on a weekend, but this timing might add more stress than relief for others. Find a time that won’t interfere too much with your team’s valuable personal time, or increase their workload.
Communicate Expectations Clearly
You want each and every person in the team to participate and get the most out of all team building exercises for work. In order to do this, you must communicate exactly what you want the team to work on, that you want them to enjoy themselves, and any other factors in play. Team members will want to know whether they get paid for the event, if the time spent away from work will add more stress to the week, and what corporate team building activities they will be participating in.

In the last Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center blog, we discussed the different skills needed to become a great leader. We follow up that blog here by rounding out the most important skills for leadership development.
Leadership is about getting the most out of yourself, getting the most out of your team, and instilling confidence in your company. Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center helps you hone a few unique skills in our leadership development program. Learned skills, more than anything inherent in you, will help you lead your team and increase your chances of success in all you do.
Leadership Development Skills
In our last blog, we talked about learning self-awareness, staying honest, and developing the ability to properly delegate. Today, we will round out the blog with a few more skills you should learn during leadership development.
Communication skills form the foundation for almost everything that goes on in your office. You cannot delegate without effective communication. You cannot teach skills, set expectations, give advice, and settle complaints without the ability properly communicate. When you communicate well with your team, you set a standard of communication that they can then follow. This will allow everything to run more smoothly when tasks get passed from one team member to another, or when issues arise in the office.
The most commonly known trait of leaders, confidence, is an easy trait to spot in most CEO’s, presidents, and other people in leadership roles. Though maybe not exactly a skill, you can do different things to keep your confidence and the confidence of your team, up. Keeping a positive and can-do attitude in the workplace will keep your team believing in your leadership, believing in their own skills, and believing in the direction of your company.
Most complex real-world problems have more than just one solution. Often times it takes different perspectives and types of people to solve a complex problem in the best way for your team. Team problem solving takes a lot of other skills, namely communication, confidence, and delegation skills, but it is the ultimate goal of your team. When you finish your leadership development training, you should be more adept at helping your team solve problems by using all the other skills you have gained.

At Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center in Connecticut, we believe in training today’s and tomorrow’s leaders with our leadership development program. Many people believe that leaders are born, not made, but this is a common misconception. Some individuals might grasp leadership skills quicker or more naturally than others, but with the right leadership development program, anyone can learn the skills necessary to become a great leader.
Leadership Is About Building Skills
At Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center, we take into consideration the skills you or your team need to develop most, and we build a leadership development program emphasizing the improvement of those skills. At the end of the day, becoming a great leader is more about learning what it takes to lead others. It is not about any inherent values of the individual. If you can learn the following skills, you can become a great manager, teammate, or all around leader.
Crucial to our leadership development plan, we try to instill a sense of self-awareness into all of our participants. If you do not know your own shortcomings and weaknesses, then you will have a difficult time finding a way to work around them. You will also find it difficult to accurately assess your team. They can help you where you fall short if you can see both your and their strengths clearly.
This leads from self-awareness. Once you determine the strengths and weaknesses of yourself, your team members, and your team as a whole, you can delegate tasks properly. Some people save too much work for themselves and some people fail to see their own failures, but a great leader will understand when and to whom to delegate a task, and when to take care of something themselves. Leadership development allows you to hone your ability to discover what types of people will do best with what tasks.
Perhaps the most important virtue for the workplace as a whole, you want your staff, employees, and team members to be at their best, is honesty. An honest team catches each other’s mistakes and calls out its members when quality is not up to desired standards. Honest team members also take ownership of their mistakes and work to improve next time. This healthy work environment must start with the leader. A trusted leader instills faith in the entire project or the entire company.

I once spoke to a group of veterans about becoming business owners and entrepreneurs at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. This opportunity came to me from The 100 Entrepreneurs Project http://100entproject.org who helps transition veterans to entrepreneurs. These warriors have sacrificed throughout their Army careers and now as they get ready for the next chapter in their lives I could see the excitement and anticipation in their eyes. I felt like I was in familiar territory, not because of the uniforms and unique feel of an Army base but because I was in the same position as these warriors just 8 years ago. I was excited about my transition to a new life but worried about the reality of needing to make it “on my own” without the support and structure of the Army lifestyle.
I spoke at this event for about 30 minutes and felt good about the way my presentation was received. I remember seeing a lot of head nods and fielded several questions at the end but what I enjoyed the most was talking to the audience one-on-one following the event and hearing what they took away from my remarks. Veteran after veteran came up to me and said “thank you” and mentioned how these three points of advice energized them:
Don’t limit yourself. Have an unshakeable confidence in yourself to “figure it out.” This means trusting that even though you don’t know where the finish line is, that you will figure out how to get there. By putting in the work, dedicating yourself to your cause and becoming an expert, you will reach your goals. There are no other options and no excuses.
As introduced to us by Interation Associates, there must be balance across all 3 dimensions of success to achieve your goals: results, process, relationships. As business owners and team leaders, we must not just focus on results. Results are generally the focus of organizational goals but in order to achieve success over a sustained period of time, we as individuals and teams must create successful processes and have strong, reliable relationships. The three dimensions are intertwined and must be considered when creating culture in the workplace.
Sell yourself and your product with passion and heart. People gravitate to positive energy and feed off authentic, heart felt enthusiasm. Showing people your heart and passion will earn you loyal clients and customers.
I am so grateful to The 100 Entrepreneurs Project for inviting me to speak and feel so uplifted by the veterans I got to speak with. I know they will be successful in the next phase of their lives and I can’t wait to see the great innovations they come up with.

The best leaders recognize that trust impacts us 24/7, 365 days a year. It affects every relationship, every communication, every work project, every business venture, every effort in which we are engaged. As noted leadership expert and author Stephen Covey said, “It changes the quality of every present moment and alters the trajectory and outcome of every future moment of our lives — both personally and professionally.”
These days, it seems trust is on the decline. Trust in our culture, in our institutions, and in our companies is significantly lower than a generation ago. Covey states, “Research shows that only 49% of employees trust senior management, and only 28% believe CEOs are a credible source of information.” We are in the midst of a trust crisis and if we don’t find leaders who are willing to build and engender trust among their organizations and communities then we may find ourselves stuck in a culture of distrust. This will lead to organizations and companies that lose out to the competition overseas, stray from the ideals that make America great and become completely inhuman and robotic.
The best leaders focus on building trust within their organizations – it becomes a specific goal just like any other goal. This goal must be communicated, measured and discussed constantly and when it is a priority for the leadership, it will become a priority for entire organization.
The transformation starts with building credibility at the personal level. Covey writes, “The foundation of trust is your own credibility, and it can be a real differentiator for any leader. A person’s reputation is a direct reflection of their credibility, and it precedes them in any interactions or negotiations they might have.” When a person’s credibility and reputation are high, it enables them to create trust fast. Trust equals productivity and efficiency. When your organization is productive and efficient, you can consider yourself on the road to victory.
When was the last time you read a great article or book related to teamwork or team development? Most managers and leaders we talk with cannot think of a book they would recommend on this topic. That’s because teamwork and team effectiveness involve a wide range of human interaction, goal setting, problem solving, leadership, and project or work specific factors that must be addressed in a dynamic environment.
Extraordinary Teams (ETs) Win more often than others and they achieve ground breaking results. How? There are 4 major factors:
Purpose- Extraordinary teams have a clear sense of purpose that goes beyond productivity and includes customer satisfaction or social impact objectives.
Goals- ETs also have clearly defined goals that are measured on a weekly and monthly basis to prevent slippage in pace to year-end goals.
Roles – Next ETs clearly define individual team member roles and responsibilities to drive accountability and the opportunity to celebrate individual contributions.
Process Innovation – ET’s also innovate process to improve effectiveness and they achieve this through open dialogue and a culture of communication that encourages and creates engagement. Sound complicated? It can be. Getting here or maintaining the highest levels of teamwork is an on-going effort and this requires investment in teamwork.
Think about it, professional work teams are the only competitive teams that do not take time to practice. Sports and military teams spend more time practicing and preparing than they do executing the game or the mission. Individually and when the stakes are high, most of us practice and prepare in a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio. We do this when we are going to give an important presentation; we take 2 to 3 hours or more to prepare a 1 hour presentation.
As a former coach and Army Veteran, I know the importance of practice. That’s why my partners and I developed the Empower Educational process. We develop highly effective teams through a proven system of team assessment. This process assesses current levels of teamwork in a number of critical areas.
Next we design and put teams through real-time simulations and challenges that test a teams current ability and also highlight areas for improvement.
Then we equip teams with tools, models, and skills that transform ordinary teams into Extraordinary Teams by:
Building commitment to team culture.
Introducing outcome-driven approaches for communication and feedback
We use our canopy tour and zip lines, and other exciting team challenges to help teams discover that they can have fun achieving seemingly impossible objectives.
