It snowed in New York on the last day of NYFW, so naturally I decided to dress like Little Red Riding Hood in my red swing coat. But in all seriousness, whenever there is a big snowstorm, I feel the need to dress in a happy color. I just love the way a bright color pops against the white snow. For this outfit, since it was also close to Valentine’s Day, I decided to wear my red swing coat from Unique Vintage, paired with a pink bow blouse and red skirt. I’ve been waiting for a chance to wear my cute snow boots from Cole Haan, so was actually very excited it snowed as it was the perfect day to wear them. These boots are the best shoes I’ve acquired all Winter! They are super comfortable, waterproof, and chic. I love the color and slightly elevated platform, and they are now 40% off!
I just couldn’t resist getting this bow shot, I can never have enough bows and I just love that there is a bow on my jacket, 3 bows on my blouse, AND a bow on my skirt. Some people might think it’s overkill, but I think it’s just right!
Asides from a colorful coat and cute snow boots, the key to a stylish snow outfit is in the accessories. To complete this look, I went with a pink pearl beanie that match my pink blouse (which also has pearl buttons on it), and red suede gloves to match the coat. I also recommend a cute umbrella which is essential to any stylish snow outfit. Lastly, I went with a burgundy shoulder bag to match the color of my snow boots. I also like how the pink sleeves of the blouse peek out from under the coat, giving this look an extra feminine touch.
Mornings in Brooklyn are my favorite. I love the peaceful feeling of walking through the tree-lined streets of Brooklyn Heights, admiring the quaint townhouses and taking in the fresh morning air. Joe Coffee is one of my go-to coffee spots for strong coffee and yummy pastries. This outfit is something I would wear on a typical weekend coffee run. I found this windowpane check coat from REISS on sale for way off it’s original price (from $725 to $220), and it’s one of my favorite purchases this season. I’m not usually a minimalist when it comes to coats, but there was something so effortlessly elegant about this coat. I think it’s the combination of the gorgeous cream color, wide check design, and oversized fit.
Another one of my favorite pieces this season are these grey cropped flare jeans from L’Agence. I didn’t have a pair of grey jeans nor flared jeans in my closet, so these really were a great addition to my closet. Since I’m on the shorter side at 5’3, it can be hard to style cropped flared jeans as they hit right at the ankle, which can make me look short. So my styling trick is to pair them with heeled ankle boots. The ones I chose have an especially high ankle portion, creating the illusion of longer ankles and legs. These jeans seriously fit me so well, Aimee Song from @songofstyle has the same pair!
To make this outfit more feminine and less minimalist, I chose a floral headband and gold heart earrings. The addition of these two accessories instantly add a girly vibe to this look. I also added a pop of color with my red colorblock handbag. You guys know I can’t have an outfit without color!
This NYFW was much quieter for me than past seasons for a couple of reasons: I returned from China the day before February NYFW 2019 started, this is now my 5th season and I’ve repeatedly seen the same designers every year, and to be honest NYFW has lost some of its appeal for me. Part of this is just due to the whole “scene” of NYFW, from waiting in line to be seated, to shows starting late, to rushing in between venues. I am not saying I’m not grateful to be invited to NYFW, because I am so 100% grateful and it’s still a dream come to me to be able to go. But I guess I’ve lost the desire to show that I’m at NYFW and be seen. So I’ve been more selective with the shows I went to this season, choosing only ones that align with my style and which I’m interested in seeing. I loved this more chill season, it gave me a chance to actually enjoy the shows I did attend, as well as genuinely catch up with some blogger friends.
For my NYFW 2019 Day 1 outfit, I had to go with my favorite new fuzzy pink cardigan that I picked up this year in China. I fell in love with this cardigan the moment I saw it – have you ever seen anything like it?! From the fuzzy pink material to the gorgeous silver detailing, this pink cardigan is the epitome of cozy glam. To style my new favorite piece, I paired it with a tulle star skirt that I also found in China. Since this cardigan has a glam vibe to it, I layered a sequin blazer underneath for an element of contrast. This outfit is all about playing with layering and textures.
For my accessories, I kept with the boho glam vibe and chose a thick burgundy velvet headband. This headband is a dupe of the Jennifer Behr one but at a fraction of the price. I actually bought and returned the Jennifer Behr headband because it ended up being too big for my head. So I was ecstatic to find this dupe on Etsy that also fit my head better. Since there are so many elements to this outfit already, I chose clean colors for my shoes and handbag, going with white booties and a sharp green bag.
This casual Winter outfit is perfect for a day of exploring in Central Park. These photos were taken at Shakespeare Garden, one of my favorite spots in the park. During the Winter it is super quiet and can feel a little desolate, but I quite like the peaceful atmosphere, it feels like I’m not in Manhattan at all! I love the cozy vibe of this outfit, I’ve been wearing this pink fur faux aviator coat from Missguided non-stop. It is surprisingly warm and a great piece for casual outfits. I paired it with a mustard sweater, plaid skirt, and burgundy knit tights.
I decided to be a bit matchy-matchy with my accessories. I chose a burgundy knit beanie to match my burgundy tights. How fun and accurate is the slogan on this hat?! I also went with plaid booties that match my plaid skirt. For a pop of color, I chose a yellow Bill Blass circle bag.
For my jewelry, I went with layered gold necklaces that are so cute against the mustard yellow sweater. I also chose my evil eye rings for a fun touch.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Carrie Bradshaw inspired outfit. I used to do these all the time and actually had a Carrie Bradshaw series which you can see here. A Carrie outfit always has a mix of different prints/textures with a sophisticated edge, and this silk beaded bag is what really reminded me of Carrie’s style. This hand embroidered bag from Jamin Puech with semi-precious stones and braided pearl details is a true gem. It is seriously the most beautiful handbag I’ve ever owned. I love the vibrant color and the sequin details that line the bottom of the bag. There is so much to see at every angle of this bag, making it a true work of art.
Since I’m wearing such a fancy beaded bag, I didn’t want the outfit to be too dressed up, but rather be more street style with a luxe vibe. So my grey fur bolero from Jocelyn was the perfect choice. This fur bolero is the softest coat ever, it feels like a shaggy pillow! I usually gravitate towards pink or purple colors (which this bolero also comes in), but I thought this wintery grey would be a nice change and go with more outfits. I sized up on the bolero and went with a Medium so that I can wear it with chunky sweaters. I paired the coat with a wide sleeve mauve sweater and midi polka dot skirt for a trendy touch.
I completed the outfit with white ankle booties that are my shoe of choice this Winter. There is something so effortlessly chic about white boots, they instantly streamline and elevate a look. Lastly, I added a pair of white vintage cuff earrings. This is one of my favorite outfits to date, everything just works together, even the building in the background. I hope you guys like this look as much as I do!
Happy New Year everyone! I originally was going to just do a regular outfit post and avoid the cheesy “2019 goals and resolutions post”, but I figured this would be a good chance to get a bit more personal and also update you guys on my plans for 2019. The big news is that I am hiring a part-time assistant for Layers of Chic! This is a huge deal for me as it’s just been me working on everything thus far, and it is both nerve-wracking and exciting to bring someone else onto the blog. My main goal for 2019 is to grow my Youtube channel and do more styling videos, so this assistant will primarily be helping me with filming and editing my videos. I am currently in the process of interviewing candidates and am astounded by the response and number of applicants I’ve received!
In addition to growing my Youtube channel, I really want to focus more on the strategy and long-term goals for Layers of Chic. While Instagram has been my primary medium for the past 2 and half years and has served me well, it is no longer what it used to be. The market has become extremely saturated and the Instagram algorithm is constantly in flux, so I’m looking to establish a more long-term strategy for growing my platform. While 2018 has been about proving to myself that I can work with brands and make a full-time income as a fashion blogger, 2019 is going to focus more on further refining the aesthetic and branding for Layers of Chic, and developing a sustainable business strategy.
From a personal standpoint, my 2019 goal is to achieve more balance in my life. The idea of a “work-life” balance doesn’t really exist when my blog is about my life and such a personal part of me. But I do think I need to set one day a week to just relax and do non-blog related things. I find this extremely hard to do because I love working on my blog and sharing my outfits everyday, and oftentimes I’d rather be doing that than something “fun”. But I’ve come to realize that I need some time away from my work each week so that I can see the bigger picture and not get caught up in my daily tasks and nitty gritty. I believe this will with my creativity and keep me inspired.
Now a little bit about this outfit: I fell in love with this pink flapper style beaded dress from ASOS the moment I saw it! I love the vintage vibe and delicate embellishments, and there’s something to elegant and effortlessly chic about a slip dress. It is now also on sale for 40% off! I paired it with a pink faux fur coat from Cabi to give this look a luxe vibe. I completed the outfit with lace-up booties and a triangle cage bag, both from ASOS.

Who’s ready for NYE?! I usually do something low-key and stay in with a bottle of champagne, but this year I’m switching it up and going to the Dos Caminos Signature NYE Party in the heart of Times Square. I haven’t gone out for NYE in forever, so I’m excited to eat and drink the night away! For a sophisticated NYE outfit, I chose a black velvet suit from Cabi. I love the luxurious and elevated vibe of this set for NYE as it is so much more unexpected than your typical sequin dress, plus much more comfortable. The fabric on this suit is super soft and the pants have a stretchy waistband, perfect for all the food and champagne that will be consumed.
I paired the velvet suit with a simple silk blouse, and added a pop of print with chic plaid ankle boots. The kitten heel on these boots means you can dance the night away to your heart’s content. I completed the outfit with a statement pearl bracelet and red leather belt bag that leaves you hands-free and worry-free!

If you’re based in New York or visiting over the holidays, I highly recommend visiting the Standard Hotel NYC near the Highline for a real Christmas wonderland experience. This colorful Christmas wonderland is right at the entrance of the hotel and is free and open to the public. I went early on a weekday and had a blast taking photos – every corner I turned was Instagram worthy and I just couldn’t get enough of the colorful trees and magical decorations. They even have heat lamps, so even though it’s outside, it’s not cold at all. I’m not sure how long the decorations will be up for, but definitely go check it out if you’re in the NYC over Christmas!
For my outfit, I wanted to wear something that was just as whimsical as this spot, but not super colorful that I would blend in with the decorations. So I went with a starry skirt from Chicwish that is one of my favorites of all time. It has great twirling action and the sheer layer on top gives the photos amazing movement and a magical quality. For the rest of my outfit, I went with Winter staples including a gray cashmere sweater, rust colored coat, and rust colored suede boots, all from H&M. I further dressed up the outfit with a gold and blue handbag and layered gold star necklaces. This outfit would be very fitting for Christmas Eve with the starry night theme and blue and gold colors.
Who’s excited for Christmas?! Going up, I actually never celebrated Christmas as my Mom is very Asian and the rest of my family is in China. But after meeting my boyfriend Adrian and going to his family for Christmas last year, I’ve been super into Christmas and have been looking forward to it for months now. I’ve even had my Christmas tree up since October! So today’s look is a dressy Christmas outfit that is a bit more fashion forward than your typical Christmas outfit. The most Christmasy part of this look is the fuzzy pink reindeer sweater from Missguided with amazing sequin detailing for $30. Such a good deal! I wanted to pair it with something a bit more edgy for contrast, so I went with my favorite new sheer skirt from & Other Stories. Sheer skirts can be so fun for Winter as it’s a great opportunity to pair them colored tights underneath. I chose red tights to pair with the skirt as they really pop and add an additional Christmas element.
For a super glam vibe, I went with the most fabulous long purple fur coat also from Missguided. I’ve seriously been so impressed with the quality of all the pieces I’ve received from Missguided – this faux fur coat looks a lot more expensive than it is, and I’ve received so many compliments and questions about it. It is also surprisingly warm for faux fur as it’s lined on the inside. To match the purple fur coat, I chose shiny purple ankle boots. I completed the look with sparkly earrings and an envelope clutch from Rebecca Minkoff that also has a touch of purple to it. I love that this outfit is festive enough to be a Christmas outfit, but still cool enough to be a fashion outfit.
I stumbled upon the most charming location to shoot this outfit while walking in the East Village. The front of this restaurant has a vintage vibe with the frame on the door and chandelier, and it proved to be the perfect backdrop for this glam look. My photographer’s camera battery actually died half way through the shoot from the cold, but luckily she had her charger with her and we were able to fuel up at a barber shop across the street. So it all worked out, and this it one of my favorite outfit and location combinations to date!
This outfit is what I like to call a feminine edgy outfit, aka wearing a black leather jacket with girly touches. I’m not typically this edgy, but I was really drawn to this leather Simpsons jacket by Anuar Layon that is so fun and quirky. I love the pop fashion vibe of this jacket and the attention to detail, like the yellow buttons and inside yellow lining. I also just got in this sequin turtleneck from & Other Stories, so I thought it would be perfect with the jacket to add a pop of holiday sparkle.
To make this Simpsons jacket better match my feminine style, I added girly touches. I went with a pearl-studded miniskirt that is a lot shorter than I remember. I haven’t worn this skirt in over 2 years, and I definitely had my doubts when I put it on…not sure how I managed to wear this skirt to work all the time! I also chose my purple bow heels that make any outfit look feminine, and paired them with red Christmas socks since ’tis the season.
I completed the outfit with a Le Parmentier red and brown color block bag. I think these colors are absolutely perfect for the holiday season and go great with any holiday outfit. Since it is now December, I also added a beanie for warmth and for a hipster cool-girl touch. I stumbled upon this colorful graffiti wall in SoHo and it turned out to a very fitting backdrop for this edgy look. The offbeat vibe of the graffiti matches the quirkiness of the Simpsons jacket and mix of different textures in this outfit.
